You're welcome. Glad I could help and I love the Guardian. Also just type theguardian.com. On the right Next to the newspaper title you'll see whatever edition it's defaulted to with a down arrow. Click on that and your other edition options with show up. They will ask you to donate but they will never harass you about it. The Guardian has no stockholders, it's held in trust and its profits are reinvested in to the newspaper to maintain it's independent integrity. It is a [newspaper of record](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newspaper_of_record).

FiftyShadesOfGregg Apr 30, 2026 +73
Just a warning that this source names the deceased, against the family’s wishes. Her family has asked she be referred to as Kumanjayi Little Baby. And it also is contradictory to their culture to have posted her photograph, now that she is deceased. The BBC article is much more respectful of giving a warning at the beginning that the article speaks of a deceased person, and naming her only as Kumanjayi Little Baby, respecting her culture.

He kidnapped, raped, and killed a little girl, less than a week after getting out of prison for repeatedly assaulting someone in domestic violence cases. In other words, he assaulted his ex, more than once, after being so abusive that he was not permitted around the person. He spent half of the last decade in prison and spent time in prison for 5 other aggravated assault charges. At a certain point, the safety of the public must supersede his right to potentially assault and now r*** and kill someone. If he is mentally ill, he should be remanded to a forensic psychiatric hospital, possibly permanently. He has shown that he is not capable of stopping the violent behavior, and because he was released, a little girl is dead. Should he be released to kill someone else? The degree of violence is clearly escalating.

Yes. Domestic violence almost always escalates. Take it seriously the first times and keep them in prison and you’ll have a lot less dead women and children. These people get slaps on the wrist. The law is extremely behind on properly dealing with domestic violence.

No, put them in a psychiatric institution until they're able to not be violent, or indefinitely.

I agree the world is better off with him locked away. I'll disagree to the hard "NO treatment". Every one of these super "broken" offenders can be a fascinating case study in both prevention and - yes, rehabilitation.  Now a best-case "rehabilitated" outcome might be a state run, secure psychiatric hospital for a guy like this... or some other secure setting where he can perform menial labor but still give something, anything back to society.

I can say as an Australian it's an incredibly touchy subject with Aboriginal people being disproportionately represented in the prison system, and people disagreeing on how to deal with this. I don't know what the solution is and people are afraid to suggest harsher penalties or measures because of past failures

The disproportionate part is where you can have a mile long rap sheet and people let you out to harm innocent members of society again because “Aboriginal people are disproportionately represented in the prison system.” Society needs to be protected from violent criminals regardless of race.
46
hyper_espace Apr 30, 2026 +32
> and people disagreeing on how to deal with this there is no "dealing with this" when the victims are also aboriginal, other than making sure the rest of the aboriginal community is safe from people like that guy. > people being disproportionately represented in the prison system Never understood why that mattered. We're not talking about drug dealing here. This guy is a violent offender that beat & r*** (and now murder) people , specifically women of his own community. this "fear of being called racist" is racism against the victims in its own community. Same thing in US with natives, where native women are raped and killed by native males, but the "fear of being called racist" is deemed more important that fighting against feminicides... so native men often get away with the most horrific crimes in their own community...

If someone is convicted of murder in the Northern Territory, the court must impose life imprisonment (this is mandatory). NT has non parole of 20, a legislated minimum non-parole period of 25 years for multiple murder convictions New South Wales have a “standard non-parole period” of 20 years for murder, used as a benchmark. Victoria life imprisonment is common, with non-parole periods often 25–30 years

454
hyper_espace Apr 30, 2026 +173

hyper_espace Apr 30, 2026 +65
But here, the Australian justice system is to blame for falling to assess how dangerous this man was, and the community allegedly warned the authorities that this guy should be kept in prison. Of course we all know why the Australian authorities didn't listen to the Aboriginal community... racism.
65
cowman3456 Apr 30, 2026 +148
Because humans with broken psychology desire power, and nothing feels more powerful than complete domination of those that are weak. It's a failure of humanity that we don't have enough mental health awareness to realize what a godforsaken problem greed and power mongering can be, and we suffer it to exist, and even release it from custody when we oughtn't.
148
UniversalSoldi3r Apr 30, 2026 +48
It's psychopathy. It needs weeding out. It's our biggest public health issue. The problem is we aren't screening for it in childhood. It's not diagnosed in childhood and is called oppositional defiant disorder instead - note, this is a labelling issue, nothing more. We all recognized these little bastards when we were kids. Behavioural tests, genetic tests and brain scans can all pick it up, but we don't do it. Society has decided to defer to a label and kick the can down the road till the bodies pile up. I also need to say that not all psychopaths kill with their bare hands some are captains of industry. The condition is predominantly seen in males, which explains why so many leaders are men. It's not all sexism in the workplace. It's urgent. It's more urgent than wars, starvation and global warming because it is the CAUSE of all these. And yes, sometimes the mask off psychopaths kill sweet little girls. The reason why is not a mystery.
48
cowman3456 Apr 30, 2026 +25
We accept some of this psychopathy in our daily lives. Billionaires in general, exist, because we let them. It all comes down to mental health awareness, in general, across the board, combined with more education, in general, across the board. And the powerful will always try to stomp that down.
25
satinsateensaltine Apr 30, 2026 +17
Plenty of the most talented surgeons also exhibit these traits. More research is happening into what divides them from the murderers. Head injuries, childhood environment, genetic factors are all being explored.
17
Enhydra67 Apr 30, 2026 +20
No psychopathy and oppositional defiance disorder are different. Psychopathic behavior is a personality disorder and the human needs to grow up and have their brains develop before it can be diagnosed.
20
UniversalSoldi3r Apr 30, 2026 +8
You have just said what I was saying. It's called one thing in childhood and another by the time it is full blown. It is different in the same way a crysalid is different to a butterfly. If you don't want the butterfly, you intervene at the crysalid stage, don't you? You don't wait till there's a butterfly plague then wonder where all the butterflies came from. It's an empathy deficit. It was always there. When it has a genetic cause it can be identified, and distinguished from behavior that meets the same behavioral criteria but the child will likely grow out of. This is not done. It is also important to identify it genetically for another reason. Early intervention such as ensuring a low stress childhood can fend off the worst of the oncoming problems. You will end up with an adult who is merely cold, not proactively dangerous. They can perhaps be encouraged into careers where they can do least harm. Throwing your hands up in bewilderment when the data is already in is exactly how we got here.
8
Enhydra67 Apr 30, 2026 +2
With ODD there is usually empathy as well as psychopathy isn't even a diagnosis according to the DSM5. While what you say is partially true as well that proper care in early stages of personality traits can seriously deminish negative affects of said disorders. I have been in mental health care for over a decade and read both the DSM 4 and 5 cover to cover. People that are interested in learning about different psychological disorders should totally read the DSM. It's dry but I find it very enjoyable
2
Hesitation-Marx May 1, 2026 +2
I was wrongly diagnosed with ODD as a teen. I was actually being rather viciously abused. I think we’d need to be very, very careful with any sort of diagnostics like that.
2
UniversalSoldi3r May 1, 2026 +1
A genetic test would have ruled out incipient psychopathy, assuming you were negative. And that's what I mean. The way of diagnosing and categorizing are currently sub optimal. The instant you were genetically tested, proper questions could have been asked rather than your abuser's word taken as gospel, and you recieving the wrong label.

And rather than just accepting her family's request to refer to her with the name that they asked for, mouth breathing Neanderthals on fb are running round posting her legal name and saying "always was and always will be". Whether you understand the culture and heritage behind the request to call her Kumanjayi Little Baby or not, it literally doesn't affect you in the slightest to honour the bereaved family's wishes. For those of you unsure what I mean, Australian Aboriginal people don't show photos of the deceased as a mark or respect. TV shows in Australia (if they contain photos or footage of a deceased Aboriginal person) will warn viewers at the start so they can choose not to see it by turning the TV off. I learned today that in the first phase of mourning, they assign another name to the deceased as well, for much the same reasons. I'm 45 and white Australian, born here, lived here my entire life. Until today I didnt know about the name part. But unlike the absolute stench on humanity on fb, I honour the family's request because why wouldn't I?

obeytheturtles Apr 30, 2026 +44
This is precisely the same sort of dehumanization which allows someone to commit such a heinous act in the first place. Conservative culture is irredeemably broken and needs to be dealt with writ large. The sooner we come to terms with this, the sooner we can get past things like this.
44
AlamutJones Apr 30, 2026 +20
Not using her original name once she is dead is, in this context, an act of love for her. She hasn’t disappeared or been made to disappear, she hasn’t been dehumanised - she’s very visible, and the new name is one that specifically acknowledges her change in circumstances. She is loved and she is being mourned

Why does the beginning of the article say "***Warning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers: this article contains references to someone who has died."*** Is this a cultural thing?
36
LittleBunInaBigWorld Apr 30, 2026 +111
In many aboriginal communities, there's a mourning period called Sorry Business where they don't mention the person's name or show their image as it's believed doing so will disrupt the spirit's journey. It doesnt apply to all aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, but it's common. They often give the person a different name. In this case, family have requested she's referred to as Kumanjayi Little Baby. Unfortunately many media outlets have disregarded this

He never should have been released in the first place, but because Australia (and similar countries) basically allow you to be a violent criminals with their insanely lax laws, and little girl has now been sexually assaulted and murdered. There’s no at least here We need to find a balance between the US (locking people up for any reason we can possibly think of, among many other issues) and these f****** weak ass legal systems that refuse to do jack shit to punish violent offenders. ETA the USA also has a pedophile president rn to be clear. But speaking in general I support way harsher punishments for violent crime

If he is, the locals will make sure there’s payback. He better hope he doesn’t get let out.

So obviously prison isn't doing it for him, why are they still trying to do more of that? Or is death penalty on the table? It sure is for those who shoot a single CEO..

Australia abolished the death penalty in the 1980’s

What’s even more sad is that our prison systems are causing these people to become hardened criminals instead of rehabilitating them…
