F*** that. He needs to lean into it.
Instead of a ballroom, replace the East Wing with a cathedral and declare himself Pope Impious I. Get a quadruple crown so he's got an even bigglier hat than that other Pope. The stained glass window behind the altar can be Trump raising his fist with that scratch on his ear and a MAGA hat. They can alter the crucifix so Jesus is staring admiringly up at the window.
Let's go. A hundred years from now I want there to be Doctor Who episodes where the Doctor is explaining that the TARDIS won't go back in time to the 21st century United States because there are safety interlocks preventing time travelers from exposure to the madness.

Id rather him live to face consequences. Him dying wont be the solution to our problems that you think it would be. JD Vance would just carry the torch and continue on the same path. Things would be very different if he was actually held accountable.
Im tired of people hoping he will die, as if thats some sort of solution to this whole situation. Seems Trump himself hopes he will die peacefully without avoiding consequences also. So, do you really want to hope for the same thing he is?

It's immaterial. FDR had congressional majorities that any president now could only dream of. The closest we've come to it this century was Obama with a thin 60-seat majority, but that meant everything had to be approved by conservative Joe Lieberman.
7
godisanelectricolive3 days ago
+10
So you need to not just win but have a landslide win to such an extent that a few rogue operators wouldn’t be able to sabotage things. A bigger Senate supermajority than what Obama had is not impossible and that should be what the target is.
10
Melodic_Crow_34093 days ago
+2
That is correct. Barring that, Democrats would need to eliminate the filibuster. It would allow them to enact their wishlist of legislation going back decades, but it is a double-edged sword. When the Republicans regain a government trifecta, they could enact their wishlist. Wonder why the SAVE Act is dead despite Republicans having a government trifecta? Democrats procedurally filibuster it. If they could pass it by straight majority, they would.
The problem is that Republicans, without the filibuster, would pass voter suppression legislation so draconian that they could keep Democrats out of power for generations.

Bloomberg tried that and failed. Most of these billionaires give off sociopathic vibes, have very little charisma and wouldn't win a primary. I remember far back during Obama's first run in 2008. I read some people toss about Mark Zuckerberg's name as a potential successor to Obama in the Democratic Party. Back then, the alt-right had not yet weaponized Facebook. Obama's social media team was great at utilizing Facebook to nip misinformation about him in the bud.
Zuck was seen as young, "with it" and was friendly with Obama. People thought he would be some kind of enlightened, benevolent, young billionaire. They did not see the pure evil he would become.

Tbh, Vatican has a few big issues (most notably protecting priests involved in scandals), but overall it has been moving in a pretty reasonable direction for a while now, even from atheist pov.
It was ok with evolution not contradicting the teachings for a while now, and the move towards inclusion of LGBT folk and same-sex unions (if not yet marriages) is very much ongoing. There's also constant talk about ordaining female priests (even if that one is a bit stuck for now).
It's the independent nutjob priests that fan most of the flames when it comes to the atheist/religious divide...
6
drleondarkholer3 days ago
+4
I doubt that the Vatican will move to allow same sex unions for a looong time from now, but it is certainly preaching tolerance towards LGBTQ folks, while not denying evolutionary theory or other "heretic" scientific ideas. Which I think can be considered moving in the right direction. At the very least, this is much more progressive than the Orthodox Church or various Protestant Churches.
4
ArchusKanzaki3 days ago
+4
Vatican is still very conservative. They will not treat marriage as anything other than "a Union between Man and Woman under God" anytime soon. Same as ordaining female priests (there are other denominations that do that already, but Catholic will be the last).
The thing Pope Francis did can be summed-up to "hey, maybe don't treat LGBT people (or any other undesired people) as spawn of hell or scourge of civiliazation, but rather fellow human being that still deserves compassion, even though you may not agree with their life choice?" In a way, extension on how Jesus does not reject prostitutes. But that's too woke apparently.
4
Dt2_03 days ago
+3
I think the second half is very important. So a religious institution does not want to recognize your marriage? Cool, they don't need to! You can get married in a completely non-religious ceremony.
What Francis said (and Leo continues to live by) is that we don't condemn people for their way of life, and we accept them as they are. Which is one hell of a better response than most other American Christian denominations (and exceptionally better than almost all non-denominationals).
3
pittaxx18 hr ago
+2
Also, you have to take baby steps when dealing with conservative institutions. By allowing the blessing of same-sex couples (even if it's not "marriage"), he took steps towards normalising the practice, which in turn will make "marriage" more palatable down the road.

I mean, Vatican has been reforming steadily since Vatican II ecumenical council of which most decisions were practically implemented under Pope John Paul II, despite the Opus Dei connection, the opposition to contraception and views on LGBTQ, who was also the first one to not refer to animist religions as pagans and actually praised some forms of it, started the process with repairing relations with not only other denominations, but also with abrahamic and non-abrahamic religions, mostly Buddhism and Jainism . I actually get surprised when those chuds calling themselves “Tradcaths” praise him as one of their own against islam, when the John Paul had prayed together with Muslim clerics in a mosque and actually supported building one in Rome as well as kissing the quran. He also recognised evolution and big bang as not in conflict with church (at least catholic) dogma and in the same context started the apologies (mostly about Galilleo, the involvement in slave trade, the women’s rights and the witch hunts during XVII c. religious wars), albeit in small scale and not for everything, he also started the travels and visits, particularly into non-catholic and even non-christian countries.
The current Catholic Church is now mostly thanks to late pope Francis, who was the biggest reformer and move the church into direction that was much needed before, even during John Paul’s II time, which he didn’t take. Honestly, Francis did so much, that my only gripe with him is that he didn’t react more strongly to Ukraine war.

People believed Nero was, and Im sure many felt the same about dictators who seemed invincible. Hitler? No doubt people thought that. This time around, it just feels off. Seeing more than just Trump do unspeakable things, and then nothing happens? Life is unfair, but there was a time where people like Trump, Bibi, Putin, were stopped. Weve been told at a young age that God hates ugly, that people who do bad things, eventually have to answer to them.
3

In non religious contexts, an anti-something usually referres to an opposite, or opposition. In this context, an anti-Christ is anyone whose world view or actions are the opposite of what Christ is supposed to represent, especially when said person claims to follow Jesus.

The most chilling is how he laughed and said "I dont think I'll be making it to Heaven" anyone Christian or not, if they believe in something after this, they would not laugh at the thought of going to Hell. It reminded me so much of Al Pacino when he played as Satan. Many people literally repent on deaths door even if theyre big atheists like LaVay who ran the Church of Satan. The fear of being wrong makes people think differently. To actually think you wont get into Heaven when you claim youre a Christian is telling. Hes acknowledging hes evil and although he escaped justice on Earth, he knows someone beyond this realm has the final say.
I think Hell is full of the most evil people, and in Dante's Inferno it mentions a special section of Hell for people like Trump who deceive the people and create division. Theres a laundry list of sins hes committed, and he certainly is aware of the crimes he committed against children.

Growing up Episcopalian, I learned that a central theme tied to Antichrist-type figures is an arrogance that encroaches upon sacred space. These figures elevate themselves, distort the truth, and invite a level of devotion that belongs to the Divine alone.
An Antichrist figure is rarely someone who simply shouts 'I hate Jesus.' Instead, they offer a replacement version of salvation: Not 'repent and follow the truth,' but 'trust me and I will rescue you.' Not 'love your neighbor,' but 'fear them and cling to me.' Not 'the truth will set you free,' but 'truth is whatever serves the cause.' It is a false gospel built entirely on the pursuit of power.
Interesting huh?

Since Pope Benedict XVI, the Catholic Church has been expediting the trial and conviction of clergy involved in the practice and cover-up of pedophilia.

And his message of patient coexisting.
Trump campaigned on the opposite approach. So his entire administration is opposed to what the Pope said. And his response is that hes a 'loser' and 'weak on crime'. Hes delirious.

Just had this crazy thought that *the pope* should put out a hit on Trump. Weird world we live in that I should imagine that one.

Renaissance popes used to do that kind of thing. For instance, Pope Sixtus IV put out a hit on Lorenzo and Giuliano de' Medici, the rulers of Florence in 1478. The attack occurred during mass in the cathedral of Florence: Giuilano died, but Lorenzo survived.

I would think that a 'message of peace' should originate with the person currently abusing his military might.

Brother, become Catholic, don't abandon Christ. Never support Trump, he is an enemy of the Catholic Church. If possible, try to make your family aware of the evils committed by Trump.

I might actually believe there's a God if the pope comes out and says what people need is quality healthcare, living wages and affordable housing

I actually thought the US had a pretty significant h******* Christian population. Apparently not considering they don't mind the potus attacking the head of the Catholic church or pretending to be Jesus himself...Can only imagine the carnage if our president in my Balkan country would try to do such stuff.

US Christianity is so steeped in its own brand of evangelism that many don't consider Catholics to be real Christians.

I'm honestly glad that he keeps attacking the pope cause it's the one way that will convince my dumbass government to drop their support for this clown.
