brace yourself for the coastal Catholics to come out and say how weird it is that fellow American Catholics act like this.... The vast majority of Catholics I know are huge conservatives, and varies on the level of personal issue they take with Trump.
American Catholics anywhere not located 60mi from the sea is about as conservative Christian as Baptists. I went to a Catholic school that cut up Harry Potter's face on a cake to celebrate my home room teacher's birthday during the Harry Potter crazy because he was a warlock/witch. I remember when the diocese tried to implement updates to the mass that included singing and changing words - a huge sect of the church simply refused to cooperate. A few Catholics I know still recognize Benedict the XVI as he wasn't liberal. It's madness in the flyover country for American Catholics.
Best way to not be Catholic in the US is to be raised as one.

The idea of somebody converting to catholicism is absurd. Either you are indoctrinated as a child and you stop after your confirmation payday at 11 years of age, or you grow out of it at the same time as Santa.

I mean, American catholics are still weird as f with their current level of anti-papism, which does not make them any different from glorified protestants. Catholics elsewhere that I know of are deeply conservative to all the meaning of this, with a high level of ultramontanism still in effect, too, aka total submission to the pope and the church hierarchy.

I’m happy to say that we New England Irish Catholics are still holding it down for the most part. You can still find some backward shit about birth control, abortion, and LGBTQ+. I can’t deny that.
But the vibe compared to Protestants, Baptists, and other Catholics is night and day.
That having been said… we’re mostly lapsed Papists at this point. Like you said, best way out of Catholicism is to best raised in it. So it’s mostly adopting secular what should be secular but keeping some positive teachings of Christ around.

It's YouTube mostly, imo. Before that it was conservative-washing magazines like First Things.
The MAGAfied Catholics in my family all spend a lot of time watching 'Catholic' or Catholic-adjacent influencer-types spout off about how the Pope is wrong, possibly German or Gay (both equally bad in their eyes), that sort of thing. Before YouTube they were reading First Things and learning how to properly interpret the things JP2 or B16 said.

My former best friend came to the U.S. as a refugee from Iraq. He voted for Bernie in the 2016 primary before going to medical school in the South, where he “rediscovered” his conservative Christian values.
This same guy, who doesn’t read the Bible and dodges questions about whether he actually believes in God, had the gall to tell me the bloody Pope isn’t a real Catholic because he’s too “woke.” The literal figurehead for his entire religion is the wrong kind of Christian because he’s isn’t a right-wing nutjob.
I’m a lifelong atheist but I love Medieval history, which means I know a lot more about the Church’s history than somebody like my friend. Dude literally believes that Christianity and the Catholic Church haven’t changed at all in hundreds of years and that any deviation from _evangelical_ American conservatism may as well be heresy, lol.
Bro also stopped being able to answer questions about whether dinosaurs were real, even though the Catholic position doesn’t explicitly condone strict creationism…

I turned out gay so you can imagine how that went. Plenty of awful stories but I prefer to not be a downer but since you asked lol. Physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse you name it. I ran away at 16 after they had already sent me to Africa for 6 months (right near the Congo border) because I "needed to live out in the bush for an attitude adjustment" I was accused of being gay while there ( because of a misunderstanding but it is also fairly obvious to anyone not sheltered ) and the US embassy got involved and I was sent home early and called a sodomite in front of the entire church congregation. My family decided to send me to conversion therapy and my mothers own friends helped me run away... I never looked back and we have a very difficult relationship these days, if you can even call it that. I don't even pick up the phone for them. I don't think I would have survived some conversion therapy thing in the deep south honestly.

32
takeda643 days ago
+6
Yeah, that's what I said that he isn't. Few years ago he was interviewed by conservatives, claimed Bible is his favorite book and Art of the Deal is his 2nd favorite.
Despite that he still was unable to recall a favorite passage, and was even afraid to say if he preferred old or new testament (he was afraid the followup questions that he wouldn't be able to answer.)
Anyway my original point is that there are multiple sects of Christianity, and Catholic one is the biggest and oldest one, but he is not even claiming to be a Catholic so a Catholic pope excommunicating him wouldn't mean much. And that assuming he is Christian, which he isn't.
His spiritual advisor is Paula White which created a Christian sect, that believes that the richer you are the better person you are (reasoning that if you're rich it is because Jesus loves you).

Excommunicate every Catholic in the Trump administration.
Take a page out of Trump’s playbook and give them a deadline. Say, 7:55pm eastern. If they have not invoked the 25th amendment and removed him from office by then (I don’t give a damn if that’s realistic or not; Something has to be done), then as God’s representative on Earth, excommunicate them from the church and condemn them to Hell.

Absolute cinema.
That's not how many of this works. Also, a priest of any level condemning someone to hell is a curse, which is, like, one of the worst sins they could commit.

The condeming wouldn't be "said" it'd be implicit in exiling them from the Church.
It wouldn't be "I condemn you to hell" it'd be "you are no longer allowed to be part of the church that saves you from hell for being in it".

Excommunication does not "condemn people to hell", nor has the Catholic Church *ever* taught such a thing, because Catholics believe that God is the ultimate arbiter of Salvation.
What excommunication actually is, is a declaration from the Catholic Church stating that as a consequence of someone's grave transgressions against the Rules of God, Man, or the Church itself, it can no longer recognize them as being in communion with the Body of the Church (hence the name),
The most immediate consequence of this is that Catholic priests will no longer be able perform any of the sacraments Church Doctrine prescribes as being an integral part of a Catholic's spiritual path towards salvation, because they believe what empowers the sacraments is the Holy Spirit working through the Body of the Church, not the individual priest.
However, being excommunicated doesn't mean that the Church deems a person to be "beyond redemption", but it *does* mean that the Catholic Church expects the person to recognize the error of their ways, to show genuine repentance for their transgression, to make amends and undo all of the damage they've caused, and do back all of these things not just with pretty words but also with actions.
So no: Being excommunicated is not even "a curse"... Quite the contrary, in fact.

“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don't want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”

F*** those tradcaths convert idiots. I left the church because of them (among other things). They turned every goddamned thing into a moral contest, and made what used to be a great community of people some poisoned pit of bullshit. I have no problem with people converting religions, but STOP trying to make your new faith some evangelical wet dream.

Papal infallibility is a dogma of the Catholic Church which states that, in virtue of the promise of Jesus to Peter, the pope when he speaks ‘ex cathedra’ is preserved from the possibility of error on doctrine "initially given to the apostolic Church and handed down in Scripture and tradition". It does NOT mean that the pope cannot sin or otherwise err. It designates the authority of the pope as the ruling agent as to what are accepted as formal beliefs in the Catholic Church. It’s not a license to wield wholesale power.

No, that would undo almost a century of progress of the Catholic Church in the US. It would all but confirm the old conspiracy theories that "The Pope politically controls all Catholics" that JFK worked so hard to dissipate when trying to become president.

24

+24
They're not conspiracy theories though, that's literally how the catholic church works. The pope is elected from the college of cardinals who work in influencial positions across each country with a catholic presence. If you have a country with a weaker separation of church and state, the catholic church will have stronger influence.
I wouldn't say /all/ catholic, but within the church as an institution the pope has the final say on a lot of things, formally or informally.

Why hasn't the Pope excommunicated Vance? More of the same, everyone is all talk and no bite when it comes holding the US regime accountable.

Because people don't understand what excommunication is. If Vance starts denying the holy trinity we can talk.

Because all the people suggesting it don’t understand cannon law, there isn’t valid grounds for excommunication. It needs to be things like heresy, apostasy, or schism.

Reasonably sure as the spiritual authority and voice of God on Earth, he’s the only person on earth who can damn trump to hell and it carry weight.
At least in the Christian faith.

Interestingly, the Catholic Church doesn’t actually give itself official damnation powers. Judas Iscariot has been implied to be damned sometimes but beyond that, Hell is a black box doctrinally.
