Wild timeline where the Pope is basically saying I’ll keep talking about peace no matter what and Trump responds like it’s a personal attack. One is talking about ending war, the other is arguing about who’s right. That contrast says everything.

I don't know in what world the pope is expected to be tough on crime and which criminals he is expected to be tough on. Sometimes they are so stupid I struggle to even understand the rationale

I grew up Lutheran, which is a great way to learn about the horrors of the Catholic Church and its history, and while I haven’t been a Christian for a long time I still vehemently dislike the Catholic Church and the papacy. Pope Leo goes hard as f***.

> I grew up Lutheran, which is a great way to learn about the horrors of the Catholic Church and its history, and while I haven’t been a Christian for a long time I still vehemently dislike the Catholic Church and the papacy. > > Pope Leo goes hard as f***. Honestly, you don’t even have to like the Catholic Church to admit this goes hard. Pope Leo basically getting attacked and still sticking to ‘yeah I’m gonna keep talking about peace’ is just rare energy.

It's really not unusual for a pope. 'Stop killing each other, help the poor' is pretty standard.

pepperino132 Apr 14, 2026 +9
True but I wonder if other popes would be too nervous about being accused of interfering in politics. I don't know if they would or not, but either way, Leo saying no peace is not political I'll keep talking is very commendable IMO.
9
subnautus Apr 14, 2026 +13
Francis was critical of Trump's rhetoric, Jean-Paul promoted peace pretty much at every turn, and if Benedict wasn't up to his t*** mismanaging sexual abuse scandals all the time, I'm confident he would have, too. The pope's main job is to try to keep faith relevant in modern life. Jesus preached peace and taking care of one another, so it shouldn't be surprising to see popes constantly trying to push that theme back to the forefront. That said, it's not surprising that Leo would have things to say about American politics. He's an American himself, after all.

Pope Leo is a leader of an organization that defends rapists.
-50
BaitmasterG Apr 14, 2026 +40
And trump is a convicted rapist, so why's the pope not defending him?
40
redyellowblue5031 Apr 14, 2026 +9
If Trump hadn’t made it clear, he’s barely a fair weather kind of religious person.
9
Galaghan Apr 14, 2026 +15
And Trump isn't a real leader but he is a real rapist. Sorry, what was your point?
15
vaporwaverhere Apr 14, 2026 -29
Can you prove that on court? If not, you’re full of shit
-29
Galaghan Apr 14, 2026 +14
E. Jean Carroll is the first example I can think of. And yes that has been to court. If that doesn't count, give it a bit of time. There will be more convictions soon, don't worry about it.

eypandabear Apr 14, 2026 +62
> I grew up Lutheran, which is a great way to learn about the horrors of the Catholic Church and its history [..] To be fair, most of the horrors the Catholic Church is known for were perpetrated in at least equal measure by Protestants. Witch hunts, for example, are wrongly associated with the Middle Ages but they only really took off in the early modern era after the Reformation (then by both Catholics and Protestants).
62
Reddvox Apr 14, 2026 +35
And the actual church hated that c*** and usually you were better off if the Vatican sent experts as you could expect a more serious and professional trial...in contrast to just some local dudes WANTING to find witches... Spanish inqiusition was a bit different though...as one might ... expect...haha...uh...
35
ffsudjat Apr 14, 2026 +13
I did not expect the last. Nobody did.
13
lebennaia Apr 14, 2026 +13
Though the Spanish Inquistion did not believe in witches. They investigated, and decided it was all just superstition. It was heretics, Jews and Muslims that they were interested in.
13
GrandRub Apr 14, 2026 +13
yeah people get it wrong all the time - for most of the middle ages the church was like "god doesnt care about witches.. its just a minor thing some crazy people do in the woods.
13
CharcoalGreyWolf Apr 14, 2026 +9
“For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” is probably the most accurate passage of Scripture I know. Because it’s not about a denomination, it’s about everyone. The first step towards genuine faith is understanding that it doesn’t make one better than others; rather, it’s acknowledging one’s sinfulness as a human being.
9
ankokudaishogun Apr 14, 2026 +57
> I grew up Lutheran, which is a great way to learn about the horrors of the Catholic Church and its history Catholic Church history is full of horrible shit, but if your source is growing *protestant* then you might be a *bit* biased. But I'm sure you already took that in consideration and went learning about the history from more neutral sources.

Trump is drooling on a King Henry the Viii scenario
74
sylva748 Apr 14, 2026 +46
The difference is the UK was predominantly Catholic abd cared about what the Pope said. The Church of England happened because the King wanted a divorce during the time when Catholicism didn't allow it. The US is predominantly Christian but it is not Catholic. It is mostly various shades of Protestantism. They dont care about the Papacy to begin with. Its not the same situation. This isnt some predominantly Catholic nation like Ireland, Spain, or Italy pulling a Church of England. All it would do is reinforce the lunacy of the Evangelicals in the US. A hypothetical "Church of Trump" or "Church of Truth" should be treated as a religious extremist group. Much like ISIS is to Islam as an example. Because that's all it would be. Its a group of Protestants saying "f*** the pope" and going more extreme. When saying "f*** the pope" was the core issue of the Protestant Reforms started by Martin Luther to begin with.

jovin49 Apr 14, 2026 +8
Weren't a lot of Amerucan Catholics vocally unhappy with this pope and the last one because they viewed them as too progressive? I wouldn't put it past them to do an Anglican style split.
8
Cabbages24ADollar Apr 14, 2026 +6

There's been several American Antipopes already. EG [Francis Schuckardt ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Schuckardt) who was part of the Sedevacantism movement after a bunch of people got butt hurt over the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s.
1
Dauntless_Idiot Apr 15, 2026 +1
Interesting, I thought there hadn't been any Antipopes since the 15th century. Perhaps its because they considered minor ones.

I remember people saying that he could be the Antichrist during his first term, and blew it off because how much could he do? Now looking back on this second term, f*** me. If I was religious, he'd definitely be a good candidate for it, and it becomes more and more apparent by the day. Especially with how he's expandedd the cult, plastering his name everywhere, etc.

Luckily the Vatican is connected by a causeway to the Castel Sant'Angelo, a fortress created out of the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian. Of course, the Pope would have to clear out the museum staff that now run the place. But Leo could run across the little causeway and bring some supplies to endure a siege against US attack. Hasn’t happened since the Holy Roman Empire attacked in the 1500s, but who knows how things will go in these times.
17
Appropriate-Joke-806 Apr 14, 2026 +3
It’s a nice brisk walk to get to the fortress, not sure he’d need to run.
3

He could just pop down to the catacombs and hide around tombs. The Swiss Guard could go all Vietcong and set up spider traps. Leo would have miles of shelf space to hide.

Utegenthal Apr 14, 2026 +41
I saw a few months ago a documentary about Vance where among others they interviewed the guy who helped him convert to catholicism. They spoke about that infamous meeting with the late Pope Franciscus where Vance and the pope apparently had a quite heated discussion (and the Franciscus died right after lol). That catholic friend of Vance proceeded to explain that he had discussed this debate Vance and the pope had with mutliple theologians and they all agreed Vance was right. These people think they know and understand the catholic religion better than the freaking pope. That's how nuts they are.
41
Lyciana Apr 14, 2026 +27
I'm not catholic, so correct me if I'm wrong. But isn't the pope by definition the final arbiter on interpretation of the catholic faith? As in, what he says about catholic religion is correct because he said it.
27
SomeGalNamedAshley Apr 14, 2026 +27
He is literally the leader and envoy caretaker in place of Jesus. The Pope is considered the "Vicar of Christ," acting as the visible leader, representative of Christ, and earthly shepherd of the Catholic Church in place of Jesus. He is regarded as St. Peter's successor, charged with leading the Church on earth, though Jesus remains the supreme head over the entire apparatus. The biggest contention between Catholics and Protestants or Catholics and Eastern Orthodox or Catholics and other Catholics (Catholics, they ruined Catholicism!!!) is over if the Pope can be in that position and effectively speak on Jesus' behalf. Over the centuries there have been very different interpretations of how to perform that role running the range of straight up power-hungry God complex down to Pope Francis being asked about gay people and responding with "who am I to judge?"
27
ankokudaishogun Apr 14, 2026 +13
Yes except no. He *can act* as Final Arbiter and when he does it all Catholic are bound to believe his word in matters of faith and morals. That normally applies to parts of Ecumenical Councils and the extremely rare cases where he speaks ex-cathedra. He usually *does not*. Which means he's still the highest religious authority of Catholicism. You are supposed to follow his lead on matters of faith and morals. You are free to have doubts, mind you, but not to deny the Pope's words outside the proper channels. Read: if you aren't an ultra-accredited theologian who can actually write a 300 pages thesis on why the Pope might be wrong about using a slash instead of a backslash(and back it up with as many pages of references) then shut up.
13
Utegenthal Apr 14, 2026 +6

That can be said of both Catholics and evangelicals, although evangelicals have been practicing it much longer. At least the Catholic Church has tried to be consistent, whereas evangelicals are built on a foundation of hate.

Italy would have quite a lot to say about it, as would the EU and the rest of NATO. The traditional policy for popes in such circumstances is to leg it down the secret passage to the fortress of Castel Sant'Angelo (formerly the Mausoleum of Hadrian) with their troops. The castle is now a museum, but it's still very defensible.
7
kai229 Apr 14, 2026 +3
It's a fun scenario to entertain because it would probably be one of the biggest shitshows in modern history. Not only would the US lose support of 99% of every Catholic ever but it would automatically canonize the Pope if he died during it, would very likely strengthen Catholicism's "soft power" (I don't like the IR concept but it gets the semantic job done) and honestly it would probably galvanize the vast majority of the Catholic West + Orthodox East against the US. While the Slavs don't follow the Pope, the Patriarch system that each one of them follows would likely feel threatened to all hell by the operation.
