Pope rebukes Hegseth’s prayers, labeling them as bloodlust
Pope Leo II launched the beginning of the holiest week on the Christian calendar with what is seen worldwide as a sharp attack on U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and the right-wing Christian nationalist movement he is pushing.

Meanwhile Trump’s spiritual advisor says MAGA must donate 10% of their income to Israel as a tithe America First baby

AdFlaky9983 Mar 31, 2026 +91
Just read a story where his spiritual board or something another just pardoned some mega church pastor of pedophilia after 6 months. Gotta love “Christians”.

The worldwide elected leader of the catholic church versus Trump’s TV evangelist. Hmm, I wonder who MAGA will listen to?

Worldwide? So you voted for Pope? My ballot must've gotten lost in the mail.

diverareyouokay Mar 31, 2026 +17
Technically Trump’s spiritual advisor didn’t say that the money should be donated to Israel, she said that it should be donated to *her ministry*, and that *she* would then donate to Israel. How much of that 10% would get donated is anybody’s guess, but something tells me that just like her spiritual advisee, she would be skimming a substantial portion off the top… probably along the lines of 9.9999999999999%, give or take a few digits.

gorginhanson Mar 31, 2026 +20
Hegseth isn't catholic. Can the Pope really slam down a rejection
20
Ninevehenian Mar 31, 2026 +38
The pope has a stick and a hat and can go quite far before his boss rebukes him.
38
primeweevil Mar 31, 2026 +6
> before his boss rebukes him. Do I want to know?

yarash Mar 31, 2026 +9
God doesnt really do that anymore. Now he just works in mysterious ways. Like a magician.
9
CPDawareness Mar 31, 2026 +5
I was at a Chili's once as a child and this magician made a coin appear in my hand but it fell into my awesome blossom sauce. Never forgive, never forget.
5
yarash Mar 31, 2026 +5
Did you get to keep the coin? And did they bring you new sauce?
5
CPDawareness Mar 31, 2026 +3
Did not keep the coin, they had to bring new sauce, by the time the sauce arrived the awesome blossom had begun to get soggy and cold.
3

He can certainly be vocal about it. I do believe that there are non-Catholics out there who do care what the Pope says. However, this brand of Christianity has been bat shit insane for a while now and has completely lost the plot. They don't give a f***.
11
coconutpiecrust Mar 31, 2026 +5
After seeing some regular dude donating 60k to Trump, who doesn’t need a salary or money from  anyone, I believe that they will donate to Israel.
5
snowdrone Mar 31, 2026 +3
Who would Jesus bomb?
3
gonko_86 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Anyone on less than 60k a year is a valid target, god despises the poor, it’s the major theme of Jesus
2
ManyAreMyNames Apr 1, 2026 +2
Ambrose Bierce: 'Ours is a Christian Army'; so he said A regiment of bangomen who led. 'And ours a Christian Navy,' added he Who sailed a thunder-junk upon the sea. Better they know than men unwarlike do What is an army and a navy, too. Pray God there may be sent them by-and-by The knowledge what a Christian is, and why. For somewhat lamely the conception runs Of a brass-buttoned Jesus firing guns.
2
NewSauerKraus Apr 1, 2026 +1
Jesus would not bomb anyone because collateral damage reduces the number of women and children who can be enslaved after waging war as the Christian scriptures demand.
1
Bicwidus Apr 1, 2026 +2
This is how you know Isreal has Trump by the balls or she would have told christians to send money to Donald instead.
2
Prior_Coyote_4376 Apr 1, 2026 +2
It really is f****** crazy that the MAGA cult would send money to anyone other than Trump and his current orbit of leeches I fully expected them to have some kind of MIGA fund where the donations are siphoned through Trump’s cons away from real donations to Israel, which is way more in character for these guys

26
PresentationSad3115 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Jesus was Jew, and looked like every other Jew. Spaniards are darker skin than Irishmen, but both are Caucasian, as are the inhabitants of the Middle East. Grab a map and tell me where the Caucasus Mountains are located.
1
ilevelconcrete Mar 31, 2026 +12
It’s not really MAGA, it’s Protestantism. This is what happens when you don’t have an overarching church telling you what you believe and don’t believe, that god you have that private, personal relationship with in your head starts telling you exactly what you want to hear!
12
Ninevehenian Mar 31, 2026 +9
Christianity is not famous for being sane when the dictator dictates what to believe.
9
ilevelconcrete Mar 31, 2026 +6
I don’t think it was particularly “sane”, but the belief system is much more consistent when that church is also responsible for deciding the biblical canon that describes the life and teachings of its supposed savior.
6
bb_kelly77 Mar 31, 2026 +2
It should be Orthodox style where priests don't have authority, they're just guides and teachers (and also have a council instead of a single leader)
2
ilevelconcrete Mar 31, 2026 +2
That’s already how large swathes of Protestantism operate.
2
bb_kelly77 Mar 31, 2026 +3
Yeah but also there's like a million types of Protestantism with absolutely no organizational structure, so whenever someone doesn't like what those in charge decide they just pull a King Henry and start their own church which is how Mormonism happened
3
escof Mar 31, 2026 +2
Their own personal Jesus.
2
Semour9 Apr 1, 2026 +1
It goes much deeper than that. It’s the late stage result of the reformation denying the popes authority. It’s why we have 100’s of different denominations now. It’s really no surprise one of them (the evangelicals) could be hijacked and used for political gain.

Remember: this is a holy war and Trump and his cronies are on the side of evil.
8
DissatisfiedGamer Mar 31, 2026 +25
Oh look, the holiest of people in the religion they supposedly follow has told them their evil, is anyone surprised? What are the betting odds that Kegsbreath or Trump come out with some disparaging remarks about the Pope in a day or two?
25
justtakeapill Mar 31, 2026 +40
Actually, Christian Dominionists like Hegseth believe the Pope is evil because he prays to the Virgin Mary. They believe all Catholics are going to burn in Hell...
40
vulture_house Mar 31, 2026 +23
Yep! People on the outside of wider Christ worship don't fully grasp the complete hatred that Christian evangelicals have for Catholicism. Not only is there theological 'reasoning' for it, but a heavy dose of anti-latino bigotry 🤫
23
ImperialRedditer Mar 31, 2026 +10
Which used to be anti-Irish and anti-Italian
10
OxLarson Apr 1, 2026 +2
Can confirm. I recall many Sunday school and youth group discussions about the Pope being the possible Anti-Christ in the End Times.
2
DissatisfiedGamer Mar 31, 2026 +9
That makes sense. The entire administration uses religion as an excuse for any and all horrible shit. Just the term "Christian Dominionists" is paradoxical and antithetical to what Jesus preached. Do they care, or even realize how hypocritical they are? No, of course not.
9
oGsMustachio Mar 31, 2026 +3
Yeah Hegseth's spiritual advisor or whatever he is wants to ban Catholic parades. One of the many problems with Christian nationalism is theres not a lot of agreement on what brand of Christianity is the one that controls. Just how white nationalists inevitably get into fights about what Europeans are actually white or not.
3
terremoto25 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Heretical along with hypocritical…
1
GuerreroUltimo Mar 31, 2026 +3
So many cults. And the world suffers for them. At least locally it is hard for me to fathom all these "Do as Jesus would" who support killing, support the c*** ICE did to many people, support the hate. Trump is GODs chosen and this war, well not a war, is him protecting us from those evil sinful people. Like cult members they always fall in line with the leader.
3
Bawstahn123 Mar 31, 2026 +9
\>Oh look, the holiest of people in the religion they supposedly follow has told them their evil, is anyone surprised? I wish people would learn the barest of minimums about the different denominations of Christianity before they made comments like these. The Pope is the "holiest of people" **in Roman Catholicism***, not in overall Christianity*. And Hegseth ***isn't a Catholic***. Doctrinally, he doesn't give a single wet shit about what the Pope thinks, and likely thinks the Pope is a heretic doomed to Hell. Not that I want people to think I agree with/defend Hegseth

Madame_Arcati Apr 1, 2026 +1
I'm hoping this will open a rift with the magop, it has among those I know who are pro-orange, but divided on God.
1
Stupoxi Apr 1, 2026 +2
Evangelical Protestants are not the same as Catholics. There are massive massive differences between the two and thank god for it, the Church may have its issues but Evangelicals seem to actually hate Jesus.
2
Standard-Constant653 Apr 1, 2026 +3
Not believing in "once saved always saved" is a huge important one, of course Catholicism can have jerks inside, but jerks tend to flock more to somewhere when they think they have a blank check after saying a magic prayer once in their lives.
3
Sminahin Mar 31, 2026 +15
I appreciate the bold talk, but it don't mean all that much until Vance is excommunicated.
15
UFOsBeforeBros Mar 31, 2026 +11
I hope Leo’s just waiting for the right opportunity. I suggest right when Couch F*****’s memoir of converting to Catholicism drops.
11
PlayerAssumption77 Mar 31, 2026 +7
I'm not sure this is the line of reasoning, but I could see how one might think this is more effective because they don't get to claim "the woke Pope is targeting us" when he's saying pretty simple and unsurprising things that only offend them because they offended Jesus.
7
Sminahin Mar 31, 2026 +4
I understand the strategic maneuvering and all that. But I've also grown to completely despise that mentality over the last few years--probably after a quadrillion hours of dealing with Netanyahu defenders framing things in hypotheticals and indirect angles. After a certain point, you have to start drawing lines. They're rounding up people in concentration camps with totally unknown death tolls. There comes a point where it's offensive and telling to not just call a s**** a s****. That said, I haven't gone Catholic history/protocol book diving in like 12 years. If there are logistical/feasibility issues preventing something like this, totally get it.
4
bb_kelly77 Mar 31, 2026 +3
Excommunication isn't a thing anymore, if Pope Leo excommunicated anyone it would be performative empty words
3
Zomunieo Apr 1, 2026 +1
So, it would be religion?
1
bb_kelly77 Apr 1, 2026 +1
At least TRY to see things from the point of view of someone who believes
1
Zomunieo Apr 1, 2026 +1
As a former believer well into adulthood, I’ve have lived experience for both perspectives, in ways that few do, thank you kindly.
1
bb_kelly77 Apr 1, 2026 +1
As a semi believer (since I don't follow any single denomination) and former nonbeliever I can tell you that it's your being a nonbeliever causing the perspective issue... maybe the words of the Pope are meaningless and maybe they aren't, what matters is those that believe hold value in them, and regardless he's a man with authority so everything he says holds weight
1
vulture_house Mar 31, 2026 +2
Excommunication is kind of out of vogue. In the past it has served in some cases to galvanize someone's wicked perspective and shut them out of a path towards correcting their view.
2
Sminahin Mar 31, 2026 +6
Yea...but we also thought 1st world Western countries rounding up people by ethnicity and throwing them in concentration camps was out of vogue too, no?
6
vulture_house Mar 31, 2026 +4
I definitely agree Vance and MAGA cronies are acting contrary to the teachings of Christ.
4
I_who_have_no_need Apr 1, 2026 +1
The Catholic Church operates under canon law, and Vance is free to run his mouth. When the Pope rebuked him last year, Vance was contrite and described himself as a "baby Catholic" and I doubt Vance is going to pull a Vigano and dispute the Pope's authority.
1
baka-tari Mar 31, 2026 +5
Well, the Pope isn’t a true Christian since he’s Catholic, so Kegsbreath doesn’t have to give a shit what he thinks. /s

I don’t think it’s sarcasm when it’s really what Kegsbreath believes.

He is the real son of the soil. I'm gonna talk to the pope after the war to knock sense into him"

1
BeautifulBand4831 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Last time I read the bible , the imaginary character yahew is literally a war/ storm god desperate for blood . So if he were real then he would like bloodlust prayers
1
bb_kelly77 Mar 31, 2026 +2
He wasn't that kind of war god... Athena is a war god and she's not bloodthirsty, not even Ares is bloodthirsty because he's a man of honor, in fact bloodthirsty war gods are quite rare
2
BeautifulBand4831 Mar 31, 2026 -1
Maybe read the bible for once bud because yahew is a deity that loves war and promotes the slaughter of innocents. So he can be considered a " war god "
-1
bb_kelly77 Mar 31, 2026 +3
Other war gods love war but not a single one goes "yes go start pointless wars and feed me blood"... he's Yahweh not Khorne... you'll notice that the wars in the Old Testament are against other Canaanites who were trying to take over Israel to expand their own power, this was like 5,000 years ago, morals were different because humanity had barely crawled out of its caves
3
BeautifulBand4831 Mar 31, 2026 -2
It's very clear you have never read the bible as their are a bunch of war stories that yahew instructs in the isrealites mythology , including pointless wars and commiting genocide . 5000 years makes no difference because these stories are proven to be fictional . It's disturbing that you're trying to defend a mythological character that's the equivalent of Hitler

5
julia_fns Mar 31, 2026 +2
Isn’t that the Old Testament, which was deprecated wherever it conflicts with the new one, according to traditional Catholic theology?
2
accurateboffer Mar 31, 2026 -7
Let me put it another way, had Christians not stood up to Muslim invasions over the centuries, there’d likely be no church. While the pope preaches about non violence, Christians are being slaughtered by Muslims on a daily basis across Africa.
-7
bb_kelly77 Mar 31, 2026 +3
It's not nonviolence it's just not warmongering, a Christian doesn't seek out violence but defends himself when violence comes to him
