I'm not sure he knows how to handle the Pope. We finally have an American who is also in a position of power who is not afraid of Donald Trump, who will not bend the knee, and who is standing up to him. We have an American with a large platform who is pushing back on Trump's message of violence and destruction, and Trump can't stand that. I hope Pope Leo continues what he is doing, as this is what is needed.

I'm not a fan of the Catholic church at all, but I *really* like this pope so far. And Trump doesn't understand that he is not powerful enough to shut him down. He also has no idea how to handle anyone who has strong principles.

As a Catholic, he makes me proud to be Catholic. I think part of the reason why the Cardinals elected Pope Leo is because he is from the United States, and he would be a foil for Trump in the positive sense on the global stage. Obviously, Pope Francis spoke out against Trump, but it seems more powerful coming from an American.
266

This pope is also more outspoken and direct, which I think is exactly what the Catholic church needs right now. I'm a lifelong atheist, but it's really nice having a pope who doesn't appear to be problematic. He's a breath of fresh air.

Basically the Church has been getting more progressive with each successive Pope, but it's a process which while it lags behind society as a whole it is still in fact moving forward nonetheless.

If you really look at the core themes of the Gospels, it actually has a lot of parallels to some mental health guides - look for the positive, don’t be an ass that takes advantage of others, in the end the entire community is better off if we take care of each other… there were some others, but it’s been 20 years since I read the Gospels - it was the same time I was starting to get treatment for my depression.
Ridiculous theist cosplay aside, the best Christians should be the kind of folks anyone with an empathetic bone in their body could side with.
Just like how the “don’t eat shellfish” (red tide toxic algae, plus poor water quality around humans) and “don’t eat pork” (trichinosis) were rules founded in science they didn’t know about, the Gospels I think are a solid observation of humans and how to be happier.
I just found it neat to see mental health therapy themes in the bible. I left the church years ago, though I’m more agnostic than anything.

It’s so cathartic having a prominent leader just speaking up. Even if he’s powerless to do much directly about it.
One of the most disheartening things of recent years is hearing and seeing so many leaders praise, compliment, coddle and bend the knee to Trump et al in the interests of diplomacy. Which he always sees as validation, and weakness in their part.

It was one of my biggest fears when Francis died. I wouldn't exactly call myself a religious man but there's a clear divide in moden Christianity. Real Christians and self-centered ego focused maniacs in Christian masks. Thankfully the pontiff has remained a real Christian.
1265
NYCinPGH3 days ago
+522
Nah, there was nothing to worry about when Francis died, he had a long-term plan for his succession and carried it out. By the time he died, a supermajority of the College of Cardinals who were eligible to vote in papal elections were appointed by him, and he made sure that they were on board with his progressive agenda.
I think Leo was a great choice, but I also think that whoever else they might have chosen would also have been comparably great.
522
Equivalent-Stand16743 days ago

It's more significant though that an American religious leader is making statements opposing an American politician than if a European or South American had done it.
If a European speaks up, an American politician can appeal to his voterbase and brush that person off as anti-American. It's not so easy if an American, who's spent his life watching the Bears and White Sox just as many other Americans have, speaks up. In villianizing another relatable American, the politician comes dangerously close to villianizing his voterbase.

Add to the fact, over the years I kept hearing American Catholics at work and other places saying "That's not my Pope" when it came to the Pope, but it's much harder for them to say that when it comes to the Pope himself being American.

To be fair, the College of Cardinals tend to elect popes based on the current state of the world and selecting an American with a legacy of work in South America, is as much a statement they could make about the state of affairs.

I'm not religious, either. I was your stereotypical 2010s teenage listnook atheist. After living some more life, I've realized that God didn't create us in his image so much as we created him in ours, and that's it's a choice if you decide to use your faith for good or for ill. I'm very thankful that Leo has turned out to be a pope that wants to use the Church to speak to our better angels instead of our lesser demons.

>One of the most disheartening things of recent years is hearing and seeing so many leaders praise, compliment, coddle and bend the knee to Trump
This has been so f****** rage indusing for me. Media included, in every country (sorry if your country is an exception, mine definitely isn't).
Talking heads speaking in TV about what might be Trumps strategy, or what is he thinking is something that makes me want to trash my TV. He does not think, he has no strategy, he is a malignant narcissist and a demented one, there literally isn't going anything in his turnip of a head.
Not a SINGLE politican or world leader has guts to say out loud the truth: That Trump is insane, in it's most literal sense. That his place is a home for demented people. That he shits in a diaper and can't keep a coherent thought for five seconds so that his speech would make at least some sense.
Media does not report his most outrageous ramblings because that would be too much like acknowledging that the man is a vegetable that someone dragged on a stage. Media has to keep on pretending that there is some sense in this all, when there is none. And I'm not talking about USA here, I'm talking about my own countries media and politics, all equally pussyfooting around and afraid of making some American angry.

***The Telegraph reports:***
The Pope has said the world is “being ravaged by a handful of tyrants” after an escalating war of words with Donald Trump.
On a visit to Camaroon on Thursday, Pope Leo said: “The masters of war pretend not to know that it takes only a moment to destroy, yet often a lifetime is not enough to rebuild.
“They turn a blind eye to the fact that billions of dollars are spent on killing and devastation, yet the resources needed for healing, education and restoration are nowhere to be found.”
The first American Pope has been an outspoken critic of the war in Iran, drawing anger from the Trump administration.
Earlier this week, the US president attacked the pontiff for his stance on the Middle East, claiming he was “WEAK on crime and terrible for foreign policy”.

If I believed in the christian end times, I'd say Donald trump is the most serious of anti-christ contenders that has ever existed.
He has fooled 'christians' that he is a great leader amongst them.
He has 'miraculously healed' from a head wound.
He blasphemes against god on the daily, and even pictured himself as christ.
He quite literally controls the world's economy at his whim.
He and his followers wear the mark of the beast upon their foreheads.
And my favourite:

Whenever Americans say stuff like this I always ask them to explain what it means. Ask them to define "Marxist" it's usually really funny. I guess not really funny because they're your parents but still

OP didn't even post the best part from the article , imo:
Thursday, the Pope added: “Woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic and political gain, dragging that which is sacred into darkness and filth. It is a world turned upside down, an exploitation of God’s creation that must be denounced and rejected by every honest conscience.”

"Not my pope!" Which they think is the same energy as "not my president!"
Saying you know more about the bible than the man who has been confirmed to know more about the Bible than any other living Catholic, with the exception of maybe a handful of cardinals--his peers--shows a vast ignorance of your own religion. Denying your own religion because a man painted in orange says he's Jesus is jumping into a cult.

Both Vance and Rubio are Catholic, and Vance has a book ABOUT his relationship with Catholicism being published very soon.
I take much pleasure knowing how painful that promo tour will be for him. I doubt he’s happy or in agreement with Trump on his matter, alongside a good majority of his Catholic voters.

Vance and plenty of the voters don't consider this Pope to be a good Catholic. Yes, that's as dumb as it sounds.

“Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing. He is not a good man who, without a protest, allows wrong to be committed in his name, and with the means which he helps to supply, because he will not trouble himself to use his mind on the subject.”
John Stuart Mill
The man is good, probably. I'm not a catholic. But the whole point is that - instead of sitting and doing nothing ( or a bare minimum of what needs to be done) - evil people should be stopped. If a punishment for evil is a pretty much none existing - evil people have no point in stopping.

100%. What was the point of all these international institutions if international laws are mere suggestions for certain countries? International law is dead, U.S. rule of law is dead. Donald Trump has laid bare that Americans connected enough can do anything with impunity- even r*** children. What happened to the Epstein files?
56

Yeah. Or the fact that Russia literally broke a treaty in 2008 - and no one did anything about it. It's started a all-out war - and everyone was concerned with not insulting them too much out of fear of escalation. It's literally struck Poland several times - and it had no reaction at all. Only in effective slaps on the wrist.

But with each passing day, Leo has been making me proud

Never would I have imagined a world where I, someone who is agnostic, would see the (first American!) Pope in opposition to a sitting American President, and I side with the Pope. Finally a public figure using their publicity to call out blatant hypocrisy.
This may genuinely move the MAGA needle away from Trump, something that is desperately needed. But you know what they say about someone backed into a corner with nothing to lose..
