Why does she even have to defend herself?

Illustrious-Job-6390 Mar 30, 2026 +541
Because Mexico needs the US. Hopefully she's smart enough to do what Canada is doing and divest itself as much as possible. Reliance on Americans is a fools game

Mexico - “too far from God and too close to the United States”
189
Spidero0w0o Mar 30, 2026 +63
México is extremely religious. Arguably it's too close to both
63
arturosevilla Mar 30, 2026 +75
That's what a former Mexican president (Porfirio Díaz) used to say. In fact, the full phrase was "Poor Mexico, so far from God and too close to the United States."

Brandfarlig Mar 30, 2026 +36
President in name, semi-dictator in practice. He got some things right but fucked over regular people and set Mexico up for revolution with his rigid system.
36
kaleidoscope_paradox Mar 31, 2026 +9
It wasn’t him in reality, it was Nemesio García Naranjo a Nuevo León politician from the same time period The quote is wrongly attributed to Porfirio

Canada and Mexico need to work together a middle powers and with other middle powers. We need to divest ourselves of the unreliable and abusive United States.

Canada tried that with the original CUSMA negotiations and Mexico went behind Canada's back (not that I necessarily blame Mexico). Trudeau again attempted to forge an alliance with the Mexican government, this time Sheinbaum and she again went behind Canada's back. Canada's lesson: Don't rely on Mexico.

Interesting - I remember reading at the time that looking for a new treaty without Mexico was being pushed by some premiers In Ontario Edit: s/governors/premiers

I think you have it the other way around https://subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2024/11/trudeau-suggests-canada-could-sacrifice-mexico-to-save-trade-with-us-00191007
12
[deleted] Mar 31, 2026 -2
And yet, how did things actually proceed with Mexico and Canada in 2025?
-2
Cheeky_bstrd Mar 31, 2026 +3
Look, both sides are looking for their own benefit given the over reliance on trade with the US so I don’t blame either party but let’s not pretend Canada is the victim in here.
3
[deleted] Mar 31, 2026 +1
I'm not suggesting Canada *is* the victim. What I am saying is: Canada and Mexico are not as close as they portend and Canada cannot rely on Mexico.
1
Cheeky_bstrd Mar 31, 2026 +2
Nor Mexico on Canada so whats the point?
2
[deleted] Mar 31, 2026
This entire sublistnook wants Canada and Mexico to align on some sort of ersatz trade war with the United States by allying themselves in opposition of the United States. I pointed out to the people above that this was tried and in both instances, it was Mexico who took steps to undermine to alliance. If, after two attempts, someone repeats the same behavior, it's clear that it should not be attempted again.

Mexico and the US need each other. Important note You know how many US companies produce goods in Mexico? How many farms are now in Mexico that everything to the US. Or the amount of trade that flows both ways daily. The 1 million Americas living in Mexico. The sadly c**** labor tjat has been flowing into the US for decades. Doing some fucked up low paying jobs that you dont see anyone else doing. Example picking fruit Trump is bullying other countries and threatening hurtful and cruel sanctions and tariffs. Mexico is doing its best avoid more unnecessary hurt from the current United Staes Regime.

I doubt it. Not exactly sure what she is doing, maybe waiting it out, hope it's the best decision for her people. She has caved so many times. It could be the smart play. I am just doubtful.

The lesson America seems to be failing to internalize is that it needs its allies and trade partners as much or more than they need America.

divest from us, lol. that's like saying that bosch should divest from VW.

He threatened to kill our president. The guy just wants to put the world ablaze and loot all the gold.

Numerous-Process2981 Mar 31, 2026 +60
Yeah just because America wants to run their country like reality tv set in a lunatic asylum doesn’t mean the rest of the world needs to start drooling over themselves and messing their diapers

US has placed a naval blockade around Cuba blocking all their energy supply to coerce them to do what US wants When Iran did the same thing with strait of hormuz , Trump threatened to obliterate their power generation plants , desalination plants, oil wells etc .

Blockade? Mexico, and most other states, are completely free to send whatever amount of oil they want to Cuba and always have been. They might get sanctioned in response, but that's something entirely different from a naval blockade.
4
fragbot2 Mar 31, 2026 -10
> US has placed a naval blockade around Cuba No we haven't. What we have done is made it clear that ships docking in Cuba won't be allowed to dock in the US. As most people who own the ships are rational actors not ideological ones, they stay away from Cuba because it's vastly more important for them to trade with the US than it is to politically support Cuba.
-10
cooljacob204sfw Mar 31, 2026 +8
I'm fairly sure we escorted a tanker approaching away already.

takeda64 Mar 30, 2026 +47
Mexico is wrong here, only putin is allowed to provide oil to Cuba /s But seriously, how much evidence we need for people that this guy is working for Russia? Sure, he invaded Venezuela and Iran, but was Russia actually hurt by those actions?

Armano-Avalus Mar 31, 2026 +5
So is Mexico actually sending oil to Cuba or is Sheinbaum not and just saying she has the right to?
5
look4jesper Mar 31, 2026 +5
No, Mexico has stopped oil exports to Cuba. Just a straight up PR statement
5
Horrible_Curses Mar 31, 2026 +3
It stopped, but even before then she had to defend it to their base, because they're gifting the oil

The USS Gerald R. Ford is in the Caribbean right now…. Off of our own coast? We can be there at any time. Edit: whoops i was wrong, it is in croatia. Either way, we have warships in the Caribbean as well.

WTF are you talking about, it is in Croatia.

can't fight if they don't have clean underwear!
1
VioletGardens-left Mar 30, 2026 -2
How much did that cost though? I mean, everytime that moves, it's the equivalent of millions of dollars that could've allocated for better living standards
-2
Segull Mar 31, 2026 +1
It costs a f*** ton, no debate there. The costs of owning and operating a super carrier is worth it though. And we own 11
1
Forward-Cat6083 Mar 31, 2026 +3
It is hard to say, because carriers have operating costs whether they’re deployed or not, and op-tempo of a carrier is typically deployed six months out of every 2 years, with about six months of work ups, during which they could deploy early, and maybe a couple months after the scheduled end of deployment where you could extend. So realistically a 50% uptime. And they’re nuclear so basically they don’t really “burn fuel”
3
Gavin1453 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Is it worth it though if you the USN is wary about the costs of even entering the Strait of Hormuz? Carriers and their e****** can hold a significant amount of interceptor missiles but require ports to resupply no longer available to them in the Middle East.  And that's not even accounting for how the US doesn't have close to the neccesary manufacturing capabilities to restore its current stocks except over a multiple years long span.  "Might is Right" can be a dangerous motto to live by if you venture up to a meat grinder. Especially if you then try to pursue other ventures while in the grinder

If the U.S. is allowing Russia to do it, they shouldn’t give Mexico a hard time.

So our narco presidenta wants to keep giving away our Oil to the leftist regime that helped her and AMLO raise to power? What a surprise Edit: Getting downvoted because I don't fit the narrative of this article I guess. Yet Sheinbaum has openly defended narco cartels and most Mexicans are against her sending oil to Cuba while Pemex is such a money sink
-26
GarnetOblivion1 Mar 30, 2026 -43
Is that what the cartels told her to do?
-43
Digitalion_ Mar 30, 2026 +26
The cartels that she launched an operation to arrest (and accidentally kill) the leader of the biggest one? Are those the cartels you're talking about? I'm so glad we can say the r-word again so we can call a s**** a s****...

Cheeky_bstrd Mar 31, 2026 -1
“Accidentally”
-1
ClearlyNotBiased Mar 30, 2026 -21
An operation that happened thanks to American intelligence.
-21
Digitalion_ Mar 31, 2026 +5
American intelligence on a drug cartel that has been propped up for decades by American interest and American government intervention. You don't get to claim to be the good guys here for f****** up an entire country now that they're finally pulling themselves out of the hole you dug for them.
5
ClearlyNotBiased Mar 31, 2026 -1
Evidence that the American government has been propping him knowingly and with intent?

Digitalion_ Mar 31, 2026 +1
https://web.archive.org/web/20001019081058/https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/drugs/special/cia.html Along with multiple allegations of the CIA being involved with the assassinations of DEA agents anytime they get close to uncovering a firm link to the US government and Mexican drug cartels. Look up the murder of DEA agent Kiki Camarena and the slew of evidence pointing toward a CIA agent named Felix Rodriguez. As someone who knows someone who was in the upper echelon of a Mexican cartel, I also, personally, know that a lot of politicians and law enforcement are paid to look away from the weapons and drug trade between the US and Mexico. I know you won't believe me, and honestly I don't care if you do because I have no way of proving evidence of conversations I've had, but it is 100% true.

You’re thinking of Trump and the Russian cartels.
