Principal Skinner makes 'steamed hams' for Superintendent Chalmers - The Simpsons, "22 Short Films About Springfield" (which first aired 30 years ago on April 14, 1996)

One time I worked as a cook at a university. I remember one time, chef needed some frozen hams ready for the line in a hurry, and made me put them in the steamer. I'm like "Let me get this straight. We are going to be serving steamed hams?" No one else thought there was anything funny about that, other than it's a great way to ruin a ham. Bunch of philistines.

I know it’s not from this episode but the best Chalmers line to me remains: “Why is it when I heard the word ‘school’ and the word ‘exploded’ I immediately thought of the word ‘SKINNER!’”
17
crabtabulousApr 14, 2026
+11
I feel like he mostly functions as a vehicle for other characters to say or do funny things around him (Skinner mostly), but Chalmers has some underrated banger lines. His line in the episode where he fires Skinner gets me every time.
"Oh, I have had it, I have had it with this school, Skinner. The low test scores, class after class of ugly, *ugly* children!"
It comes so quickly and unexpectedly with the gratuitous double emphasis on "ugly", I always end up with my ribs hurting laughing at it.

I moved to Albany having missed this meme (I’d seen the episode when it first aired, but had forgotten it).
Everyone in r/Albany kept talking about “steamed hams” and I was furiously looking on Google for Albany restaurants to get steamed hamburgers.
I had moved from Connecticut where [steamed cheeseburgers are a thing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steamed_cheeseburger) and I was looking to get my fix.
When I realized that Albany doesn’t actually have steamed hamburgers, and it was all a 20 year old joke from the Simpsons, I was pretty annoyed. Steamed, even.

It was pretty amusing watching the internet rediscover this in the mid 2010s and turning it into the 'Steamed Hams' meme. This was always cult favorite segment of the Simpsons among fans, though in the 20 years prior to the internet propagation the focus was a lot more on 'AURORA BOREALIS!?' than the steam hams.

This just makes me miss unlimited steam.
It was a twitch channel that would show AI generated variations on the steamed hams bit that were clearly just a madlib prompt for each scene, but there was something about it that was fantastic as background listening.
Nothing Forever, the seinfeld themed one, was also pretty good. None of the other ones have really hit the same way for me, including newer iterations of nothing forever and newer iterations of something mocking steamed hams.

Nothing Forever was fascinating to watch as the developers worked on it, but it lost its magic after they changed all of the characters. They went from having a few thousand viewers to almost none in such a short period of time.

If you're serious then I strongly recommend watching it. The early seasons are widely considered some of the best TV ever made.
I would say just go and check out any episode from Season 3 to Season 8 (generally considered the golden age) and see if you enjoy it. Then, if you do, just go wild. The first two seasons are great but the show hadn't really settled into itself so they don't give you the best idea of what to expect.
Willing to take the /r/woosh on this since it's not totally impossible that some younger people genuinely haven't heard of The Simpsons. I know I'd love to be able to experience it for the first time so I urge you to do so.
