She was fantastic in Anatomy of a Fall (and also Zone of Interest from the same year but perhaps a less broadly appealing movie).

The book calls for an intense eastern german boss lady which isn't a movie stereotype called on often, but damn did she show up with it.

She was a beast in 2023. Zone of interest and especially anatomy of a fall were both nominated for best picture and she was the main actress in both of em.
9
WhoKilledZekeIddon Mar 22, 2026 +120
She was perfectly cast, but I think her portrayal (or the script at least) was a little on the warm side? I also don’t think they properly conveyed that Strat had complete and utter carte blanche to do anything, but to be fair they did have a runtime to contend with.
120
Coal_Morgan Mar 22, 2026 +93
Yeah, I was a smidge disappointed they didn't go into all the stuff she ends up doing...particularly in Antarctica and the acknowledgement that she believed the world would hold her accountable in her lifetime for the things she did to save the world. At the same time, it was a good length already and things definitely needed to be shrunk to fit.

The book was clearly written to be adapted into a movie.
158
NoNefariousness2144 Mar 22, 2026 +112
Yeah after *Artemis* wasn’t a *The Martain*-level hit, it feels like Weir wanted a guaranteed hit novel and movie. It worked.
112
Don_Pickleball Mar 22, 2026 +43
I actually want to see Artemis adapted. I think there were some big ideas in that book that were pretty cool, the miss was his writing for the main character who was a woman. It would work if they brought in a woman to write the screenplay to fix that piece.
43
buzziebee Mar 22, 2026 +46
I think part of the problem with adapting Weirs books is how the plot drives around scientific problem solving. Both the Martian and Project Hail Mary had to massively cut out the "science stuff" and instead focus on the spectacle. >! "Man shipwrecked on Mars"!< or >! "Man shipwrecked around foreign star" !<, is a lot bigger and can skip over way more details than >! Woman on moon investigates corporate takeover and patent issues for chemical process !<. PHM did a better job than the Martian IMO, but it still had to gloss over or ignore most of the fascinating bits of the book to have room to fit the buddy comedy and action set pieces. I think Artemis would work better as a series tbh because it won't have that pressure to deliver big blockbuster moments and would have room for the story and explanations to breathe.
46
cassydd Mar 23, 2026 +5
I found with The Martian that having read the book made the movie a lot more immersive and enjoyable. Hoping that PHM is the same.

OobaDooba72 Mar 22, 2026 +69
Sure, but having an actual puppet of Rocky on set for every scene, and having the entire ship be physical sets and not just green screens, does a *lot*. It gives the CGI something to build off of, instead of just being a fully CGI-creation. Makes everything feel way more real and less cartoony.
69
NoobFreakT Mar 22, 2026 +32
Nah, practical effects = CGI when both are done well. This film utilizes both very well
32
Tricky-Ad7897 Mar 22, 2026 +9
Exactly, there are practical effects which are really bad and tacky compared to even mediocre CGI too. A film should be allowed to use both when appropriate, and good displays of either should be celebrated.

I was super disappointed they didn't do my favorite lines from the escape from Planet Adrian. Grace can see the hull starting to glow and remarks that they have to get out of there quickly, in a panic. Rocky: you can see heat? (Said like it is a superpower) Grace: (still panicked) Sometimes! We'll talk about that later!

199
Slurm11 Mar 22, 2026 +139
Agreed! I totally get why they show him in the marketing - you dont spend $200+ million on a movie and hide a critical character who is in like 70% of the movie. But reading the book for the first time without any context was one of my favorite reading experiences ever.
139
Consistent-Peace2770 Mar 22, 2026 +31
I totally get it marketing wise, but I don't think you'd be able to convince me that narratively it's a much better experience to know Rocky is in it
31
mistcrawler Mar 23, 2026 +12
Pre-movie I would have agreed with you. However, post-movie, the group I was with (who went in blind) would not stop talking about how cute and awesome Rocky was. It was almost like the rest of the movie was just an excuse to have more cute and intimate time with Rocky. Which... I suppose is true, from a certain point of view...

The book is one of my all-time favourites and I loved the movie. I don't care that they dumbed down the science and rushed through a lot of things. I am just so happy we even got a movie adaptation. And I love the reception it's gotten. Just a fantastic film.
933
I_Am_The_Mole Mar 22, 2026 +344
I haven't read the book but damn it's 2.5 hours long I can't imagine if they *hadn't* rushed some stuff. To be fair, none of the *movie* felt rushed.
344
TheJoshider10 Mar 22, 2026 +199
It's the same situation as the recent Dune movies where they had no choice but to condense or rework certain things to fit. Some parts of the lore happen without expanding on it to the same degree e.g. Rocky leaving a burn mark on Grace because of how hot Eridians are is a nice visual way of showing a key difference in their biology.
199
nbunkerpunk Mar 22, 2026 +66
It's never a bad thing for directors to shift, alter or omit things from books as long as the source material is respected and the overall story and theme don't change. Books and movies are far too different types of media for it to always be exact.
66
MelonOfFury Mar 22, 2026 +33
That whole scene traumatised me and as a fan of the book I already knew what was coming.
33

32
jaxmagicman Mar 22, 2026 +74
A lot of the science was rushed, dir it is understandable. Nobody needed an hour of Grace trying to evolve the Taumeba.
74
eekamuse Mar 23, 2026 +58
Grace waking up so quickly was necessary, but disappointing. The struggle in the book is very powerful.
58
Jean-LucBacardi Mar 23, 2026 +13
Hell he didn't even ever answer the math problem 2+2 iirc. He had zero access to the ship in the book without doing that and remembering his name.
13
buzziebee Mar 22, 2026 +99
This is how I felt too. I get why they edited out some of the more complex topics or interesting little conversations to focus on the big stuff which is already awesome. The good news with this film is it was all there if you knew what was happening but it was never really explained. Very show don't tell. I'm hoping with the success there might be a directors edition out there. I imagine they filmed a bunch of the scenes that contain some of the densest but most interesting tidbits one day. Things that I missed that were either hinted at in the film, condensed, or omitted (book spoilers ahead): - >! ~~Rocky being a non water based lifeform.~~ (Edit: he WAS water based but Grace thought he wasn't until he found out he also was). They MUST have filmed this as they filmed the set up (astrophage being water based and Grace being "wrong") but not the payoff (Rocky being ~~non~~ (edit: also) water based). !< - >! Eridian physiology and Eridanians alternative evolution (no daylight/radiation) and how that affected their scientific understanding and tech etc. Harder to show don't tell but it's fascinating and would be/was of great interest to the character. !< - >! the whole "why are our two species here but not others" conversation. It was a really cool, interesting, and nice moment in the book and wouldn't have taken long to do. Also probably filmed.!< - >! way too nerdy for the big screen but the matter<>photon conversion thing that makes the astrophage work was really cool. It's the thing that made AW write the book and it's really cool. !< - >! astrophage farming! They paved over 25% of the Sahara or something like that to harvest enough. Plus the whole "if we survive this, this is the most useful thing humans have ever discovered" topic. That bit of hope for the future if this problem is solved really sparks the imagination.!< - >! how big Eva's mandate was. I wish we'd seen the whole "we're nuking Antarctica to release greenhouse gases in the hope that it will buy us a few more years whilst we wait for your mission". The stakes weren't really made anywhere near as clear in the movie as they were in the book. Just a few hints about death numbers. !< - >! The whole "explaining relativity to Rocky" thing which is why he has so much spare fuel was skipped (just a throw away line that he had to explain it to him) in favor of a simpler "I'll take longer to get home" thing. The hard sci fi parts of AW's work always sparks the imagination and having a teacher explain it to Rocky would be really cool to see (and educational for audiences), plus the "that's crazy, no way is that real" reaction from Rocky would be funny. But it's too much "nerd shit" for execs/audiences which is a shame. !< - >! Xenonite was mentioned in the film but understandably they didn't go into any detail about its incredible material properties or how good Rocky is at using it. Another boon for humanity once they recover from the astrophage. !< I think including most of these would only add another few minutes to the film, would make it more educational for non science-y audiences, and would give us even more time for Rocky and Ryland to bond which is the emotional core of the film. Based on the hints that are there in the film that all these topics were considered when writing the scripts and filming I have this sneaking suspicion that such scenes were indeed filmed but ended up on the cutting room floor. Hopefully one day we get a directors edition which includes all this stuff. It would make it the best hard sci film of all time IMO. I probably missed a few scenes or moments that were hinted at but not mentioned. It's been a while since I last read the book. There are also a few scenes I'm fine with not including such as >! Grace man handling Rocky back into his cage and then mistakenly blowing out his "heatsink" !< or the >! "taking Software companies to court"!< thing. What else would you like to have seen more of?
99
bedroompurgatory Mar 22, 2026 +94
I would have liked the opening bits, where Grace doesn't realise he's on a ship, and conducts experiments to determine apparent gravity is higher than earth standard, instead of just looking out the window. Lost that sort of escape room vibe the book had in the beginning.
94
buzziebee Mar 22, 2026 +24
It definitely hooks you in and I really enjoyed the "escape room vibe" as you do brilliantly described it. That whole problem solving cycle is what makes AW's books shine and it's usually glossed over in these kinds of sci fi adaptations due to low expectations of the audiences ability to understand. Some of the examples I listed were ones that I thought could have been easily adapted to the screen. I imagine the writers considered it really hard to make explaining why pendulums swinging at different heights means you're in a centrifuge or not engaging so they shied away from it. The book also heavily relies on his inner monologue which is a lot harder to portray on screen but I would have loved to have seen it. Maybe he could have held onto the "lava" and almost rubber ducked it as he worked through the problem. Any kind of challenge for him to overcome that was more of an obstacle than "stumbles around making a mess then looks out of the window and then looks at a map" would have been an improvement but I get why they decided to keep that bit short so they could keep up the pace and get to the point quicker.
24
MSixteenI6 Mar 23, 2026 +54
But rocky IS water based. This is mentioned in the books, Rocky is essentially steam powered, and his planet has oceans. And also Grace comes to the conclusion that the three of them (humans, Eridians, and Astrophage) all evolved from the same thing, meaning Eridians are water based.
54
Kleptos18 Mar 22, 2026 +34
I don't think they explained enough/very well that Rocky is a mechanic, not a scientist. That was a huge part in the book that was important to how they worked together.
34
buzziebee Mar 23, 2026 +33
Yeah that whole "Grace does the science, Rocky makes it real" thing was hinted at but not really explored. A lot more time was spent on the interpersonal relationship rather than the working relationship. To be fair that's also where the heart of the movie is so I get why they did it.
33
SewSewBlue Mar 23, 2026 +9
My favorite book bit was Grace mentioning he could see the ship's hull heating up around Adrian. Rocky: you can see heat?!?!?!? Grace: Sometimes! Just loved that little bit of discovery about the pros and cons of different visual methods. Of course Rocky couldn't see something getting red hot.
9
h4x_x_x0r Mar 22, 2026 +11
Just seen the movie and I agree, not only did they make a movie, it's a damn good one at that from a casting, soundtrack and technical perspective, the whole movie looks so well produced, every set and prop has character and looks real. But (at least for me) they also made a beautiful movie, using practical stuff where possible and CGI to enhance on that and they simply delivered; the petrovascope scene or exploring Rocky's ship (which was a welcome addition to the book IMHO) gave me goosebumps because they had such a great combination of visuals and sound design.

I'm almost done with the book, but I was enjoying it so much, I didn't want to wait to finish it before seeing the movie, so I went last night. The book is a far better medium to convey the science behind AstroPhage and Taumoeba, so I get why those aspects took more of a backseat in the movie. But I felt the movie perfectly captured all the important plot-beats of the story's progression from the book, and not only is it generally an amazing sci-fi movie, it's also an equally amazing adaptation of the book. Getting to watch the progression of Grace and Rocky's friendship start, and then progress, on the big screen was such a huge, huge treat for me. And there were parts in there that literally had me in tears because of how endearing their friendship had become. I won't be able to see it again in theaters, but, as soon as it's on streaming services, I know for a fact it's going on my list of "comfort movie watches". 10/10 sci-fi movie, 10/10 book-to-movie adaptation.

It’s a good and fun movie. Yes - they cut out some details and background from the book, but the spirit and main themes are still captured and done well. I read the book, and I think I might be in the smaller group that likes the movie more than the book.

Agreed! I feel like that was a big reason why they chose Grace to go on the mission. Things I noticed left out: >!tense parts of needing to manufacture enough astrophage and using the Sahara desert. The arctic nuclear bombing.!< Things I noticed they changed >! Stratt was so much more up tight in the movie, her singing felt weird to me . Rocky being so willing to show how he eats and the fact that it was not even that gross compared to how it is in the book. Also when Grace was asking what he wanted as a going away gift from Rocky he wanted to see inside the ship instead of Xenonite, takes some of the science nerdyness out. The whole discovery of how Rocky cannot see visible light and also how they figured out together how all of his crew wwre killed by radiation as a direct link to that was just glossed over as compared to the book it was more nuanced. In the beginning how Grace is doing all the science together with the bodyguard dude. !< I liked the book better in the end but the movie was good.

letsmakeart Mar 22, 2026 +61
Wow I totally do not remember anything about >!the Sahara desert!< lol. But yeah >!making enough astrophage was a big thing, and was the whole reason why they couldn't put enough on board to get the astronauts back home, too. It just would have taken too long.!< I really liked both!!
61
Dazzling-Slide8288 Mar 22, 2026 +67
Yeah some prick was in jail and got released because he was the one guy who knew how to make enough of some black glass to manufacture astrophage. I think.

NotBillNyeScienceGuy Mar 22, 2026 +25
He was the leading expert in a solar mirror farm. Bond villain
25
blackmushh Mar 22, 2026 +76
My wife who hasn’t read the books was a little confused about it too. They also breezed through some of the science about why they were in comas and how long the trip was. The astronauts were selected because they had a gene that made it more likely they would survive a long coma. This also explained why the kidnapped Grace and sent him after the two science astronauts died. He also had the gene and was the best candidate instead of sending someone who didn’t have astrophage experience.

Junethemuse Mar 22, 2026 +56
I do wish they’d talked about the relativity a bit in the movie. It was all inferred, but I felt like it could have had an extra line about it.
56
blackmushh Mar 22, 2026 +45
For sure. It was just a quick scene and sentence that Rocky and Eridians did not know about radiation or relativity. Those scenes could have been more impactful
45
quats555 Mar 22, 2026 +60
I don’t think they really were explained in the book since he doesn’t specifically know, himself. >!He had to explain to Rocky and basically said, It is a risky procedure and they were unlucky.!<
60
Minia15 Mar 22, 2026 +82
Fun fact from a recent video: Andy Weir said it isn’t explained and he doesn’t want to say anything since he might use it as a plot point in a sequel. Though he’s seemed pretty mixed on doing a sequel
82
silverlegend Mar 22, 2026 +75
>pretty mixed on doing a sequel This is the kind of problem a big dump truck full of Bezos bucks can solve
75
pawned79 Mar 22, 2026 +55
I just finished the book and it wasn’t a conclusive explanation. Ultimately >!Yao and Ilyukhina’s contribution to the story is an explanation as to why Grace would have extra food and supplies. At one point I thought maybe it would be revealed that Stratt planned them to die for reasons, but no such conspiracy.!<
55
Nedsama Mar 22, 2026 +32
unrelated but i dont remember grace going into rocky's ship in the book. am i wrong?
32
thelastwordbender Mar 22, 2026 +59
You are right. He doesn't go into Rocky's ship. The atmosphere and the temperature would be way too much for a human to survive
59
NoNefariousness2144 Mar 22, 2026 +51
That’s why I loved the scene of him asking to go into Rocky’s ship as a present. As a book reader, I couldn’t think or remember what Grace wanted as a present, so him saying one of the biggest desires of the book readers (to see inside the ship) was awesome.
51
jlonso Mar 22, 2026 +58
Seeing rocky's pov was great. My only quarrel is that they were rationing *jazz hands*, I WANTED MORE
58
cepster Mar 22, 2026 +23
They indeed added it for the movie but it gave us the funny sight gag of Grace in the Xenonite spacesuit
23
Alstreim Mar 22, 2026 +22
There was a possible explanation about an >!iffy nutrient pump a moment before the explosion that killed Shapiro and Dubois. Grace was making a report about it so that the crew knew to replace it before going into the coma but then the explosion happened and he had other things on his mind.!<
22
crshbndct Mar 22, 2026 +23
In the book, >!Grace is in his office busy doing paperwork to get one of the coma feeding pumps changed when the explosion happens. Because of the explosion he never gets this done and that is probably what killed the other two.!<
23
ZzzSleep Mar 22, 2026 +24
Leaving out the gene thing didn’t really bother me because that was the one thing in the book where it felt like too much of a coincidence.
24
Minia15 Mar 22, 2026 +9
It’s not truly explained in the books why they happened. Andy Weird said he doesn’t want to say anything about it since he might use it as a plot point in a sequel
9
Bynming Mar 22, 2026 +579
I read the book and went in expecting something very different from what we got but I was pleasantly surprised. They did a great job of adapting the material for the big screen.
579
DresdenPI Mar 22, 2026 +77
I thought the changes they made were pretty interesting. Grace is much more skittish in the movie than he is in the book, >!which foreshadows the twist a lot better!<. They dumbed down the science, which disappointed me, but they also added scenes talking more explicitly about how Grace has failed to build any meaningful attachments to Earth. It makes the whole emotional story being told about Grace, >!who wouldn't willingly give his life for all of humanity but who does do so for Rocky!<, more of the focus.
77
zaphodp3 Mar 22, 2026 +220
Really? It pretty much seemed like what I imagined when reading the book. Edit: I’m not saying everything in the book was covered. But the parts that were covered were pretty much what I imagined when reading
220
urstickur Mar 22, 2026 +225
It felt like the science aspects and the world-ending threat took a backseat so they could focus on the friendship dynamic and what they were facing head on in the new solar system, so that was a bit disappointing to me. But it was a great movie nonetheless.
225
FangornOthersCallMe Mar 22, 2026 +90
I feel like if they’d included all the science explanations from the book it would’ve felt like redoing The Martian, which was where that story shined. Project Hail Mary had the science but also a lot more heart and tenderness, so I’m glad they focused on what set this story apart - despite how fun all the science was in the book.
90
Krombopulos_Micheal Mar 22, 2026 +43
That's the only thing I missed, and why people seem to love Weir's writing, is the science. I really wish they'd have gone into >!Rockys biology more and talked about his metal tube insides and how Grace tried to blow all the soot out of him in an attempt to help, and almost killing him lol. IMO it didn't really seem like Rocky might actually die in the movie, where in the book there was a while there where you thought he was fully dead!<
43
Zohaas Mar 22, 2026 +94
Yeah, they missed out on a lot of the nuances from the book (go figure), but they managed to capture the heart, which is the most important part of making an adaptation. Them leaving out the "you are here, question" is disappointing, but everyone I went to see it with still felt a connection to Rocky, so it was a successful adaptation.
94
AegisCruiser Mar 22, 2026 +54
What was left out was fine, in my opinion. There was a big bit that was left out, won't mention here, that I absolutely hate every time I re-read, and I very much appreciated not having to see that. What was added, was incredible. I think they did a great job of bringing that friendship to the big screen. Small spoiler, doesn't ruin the movie by any means, but: >!Also, Army Guy Steve being portrayed by Carl was really well done. I loved how Steve was Grace's buddy in the book, but he didn't really have a lot of presence other than Grace liking the guy. Carl seemed like a real friend to Grace.!<
54
Defmork Mar 22, 2026 +13
What's the bit that you don't like in the book?
13
AegisCruiser Mar 22, 2026 +41
>!The part where Grace almost kills Rocky by trying to help blow out his 'vents'. It's a great depiction of how different biologies work, and how it's a 'learn by doing' sort of situation, it's just gut wrenching. I don't like it.!<
41
yoloswagrofl Mar 22, 2026 +30
I loved that part and I was disappointed that the movie erased it. It really showed how much Grace wanted Rocky to live whereas in the movie he's just passively hoping Rocky recovers.
30
Defmork Mar 22, 2026 +23
Ahh, I see. I can definitely empathise, although the movie didn't go into >!Rocky's anatomy in much detail in general!< which is sad but understandable given the runtime constraints.
23
Yaxim3 Mar 22, 2026 +29
Probably the weird sex stuff between the two science astronauts that get themselves blown up.

> Yeah, they missed out on a lot of the nuances from the book (go figure), but they managed to capture the heart, which is the most important part of making an adaptation. Absolutely. They of course needed to compress the details and leave some stuff out to manage this as a film, and I think they nailed it. I would have loved to have seen more of the chain building, the nitrogen tolerance stuff, etc... but it was the right choice to simplify those things. Now for anyone who watches the film without having read the book, there's this wonderful way to delve into the story even further with a lot more technical detail by reading or listening to the audiobook (which I highly recommend). The two forms of the story will complement each other nicely.
17
BroughtBagLunchSmart Mar 22, 2026 +7
I am glad the last 45 minutes wasn't spent cleaning storage tanks and slowly making the taumoeba more and more nitrogen resistant. That was find to skip over.

Bynming Mar 22, 2026 +43
A big part of the experience of the book for me was the scientific process explained (sometimes ad nauseum) throughout every phase of the story. Even the process of figuring out he's on a ship going through space was drawn out, all stuff that isn't necessarily conducive to a good movie, but that I found really enjoyable to read. There are a lot of things that happen in the movie where having read the book gives you insight into why things are happening the way that they are, whereas in the movie you can kind of put it together to an extent but not completely. I just think it's great, I love both for different reasons. I can say that I didn't cry when reading the book, for instance.
43
Foodstamps4life Mar 22, 2026 +22
I mean, that’s kinda what weir does well that doesn’t translate to screen. The amount of stuff I enjoyed in the Martian that didn’t make it in, or that they altered oddly bummed me out, but also didn’t ruin the adaption. Some, which feels like a blast to read, would be so drawn out to show on screen.
22
Philosophile42 Mar 22, 2026 +42
I really enjoyed the movie but I thought it moved too fast through the stakes for Earth. It was mostly reduced to “your students are going to die as will you”. I was hoping for the Antarctica scene to show how desperate the people of Earth were getting. But I get it, it was already 15 minutes shy of a 3 hour movie.
42
Stinky_Eastwood Mar 22, 2026 +24
"The sun is dying and that will kill everyone" is very clear as far as stakes go.
24
jazzieberry Mar 22, 2026 +12
I actually enjoyed the movie more, I had trouble visualizing everything in the book. The movie was gorgeous. (also I listened to the audiobook and I'm bad about zoning out for a bit and getting confused, especially with flashbacks)
12
magicalme_1231 Mar 22, 2026 +42
It was a great film. When I read the book, I had a hard time picturing some of the scenes. Seeing it brought to life by Chris and Phil was wonderful. You can feel the respect for the source material and Im sure the fact that Andy Weir had a helping hand in the production helped a lot too!

A_Polite_Noise Mar 22, 2026 +46
It's tremendously saccharine; I loved it, but if that adjective is an immediate turn off or negative, it won't be your cup of tea. The other commenter saying it's like a live-action Pixar movie isn't far off. There's maturity to the performances and stakes but I would say it's family-friendly sci-fi spectacle. I left the theater feeling good vibes.

Neat_On_The_Rocks Mar 22, 2026 +29
Big fan of the book and had big expectations. I’d say it met expectations. I don’t think it’s a history making career defining film of the decade sort of thing. I’d rate it an 8.5/10. But it’s also an instant classic. It’s an even more friendly to all ages, funny, endearing version of the Martian. It’s like if the Martian and ET movies had a baby movie made in 2025. Like, it’s gonna be tough to find people that don’t like this film, and it will 100% be rewatch able. Thst makes it a classic. Rocky is just perfectly done. 10/10 on the dynamic between the two main characters which is the heart and soul of the story. They hit a 10/10 on by far the most important aspect of the film. I could watch the two leads just hang out all day. Visuals and score are a 10/10 as well. F****** gorgeous movie and the score is great. The visuals and score work in harmony to make you really FEEL that sense of “space awe”. The juxtaposition of the realistic feeling practical effects inside his spaceship compared to some of the gorgeous “space awe” stuff we see is a 10/10 also. All these 10/10 and I’m still giving it an 8.5? Basically, I think this film was almost perfectly made to purpose. The directors had a vision and they executed on it to perfection. That said, the movie didn’t break any new ground. At its core it’s a simple story that’s been done hundreds of times. And I do feel like the run time was felt just a liiiiitle bit at times. Which is tough because I also felt the ending was just a bit too rushed. Could have had 10-15 more minutes added to the last 30 min or so of the movie. And that’s tough to say in a movie that was too long. And so, 8.5./10. Amazing movie, extremely enjoyable, no REAL complaints. But, like, I don’t feel changed as a person or feel like I just saw something I’ve never seen before or will never see again, ya know? I

He just needs to stop making movies with 'Man' or 'Guy' in the title. 'The Grey Man', is another one.

Watching in IMAX in a packed theatre and during the silent moments of the movie and all you can hear is the projector running its film due to the audience being so captivated, it is just spine tingling stuff, if you can watch this in IMAX, do so!! Don’t even get me started on the visuals…
37
pickleparty16 Mar 22, 2026 +42
The movie was short on the science-y part, at least compared the Martian adaptation, but i think it did a great job of capturing the spirit of the book. Importantly, the main plot points were kept intact.
42
GladIntroduction3585 Mar 22, 2026 +63
I really preferred Ryan's performance over the audio book narrator. In general Grace's character was much more snarky and sarcastic in the book, where the movie character was more lighthearted, humorous, but still had that sarcastic edge. Ryan gosling sold it with the expressive face acting as well.

This is one of the few times I will say amovie is too short. They needed another 20-30 minutes. They speed ran or glossed over some things that probably should have been included or expanded upon. But it’s enjoyable Edit: And to be clear I did really enjoy the movie To add to this though, I think it missed a few things that was needed. Stratt does not come off as all powerful as she is in the book. That hurts her and the story a bit. To that end They really need the courtroom scene. The climate scientist and Antarctica would have helped quite a bit. And then the nitrogen/breeding/ search. Those 3 or 4 scenes add about 20 minutes. Which is about what was cut from the run time as the original cut was 3h 5m apparently.
209
Applesburg14 Mar 22, 2026 +111
I believe that it’ll be given an extended cut a la The Martian but who knows
111
DasGanon Mar 22, 2026 +79
I hope so. There's a bit of the "You don't understand, this is the next mass extinction, including us, if we do nothing" that's removed from the book, including the biggest "holy shit" scene in Antarctica.
79
Kahzgul Mar 22, 2026 +43
They cut a bunch of the science, too, especially near the end, but overall I really liked it. My kid says it’s his favorite film of all time now (supplanting Flow) and he wants to read the book. All in all I really enjoyed it.
43
lovesdogsguy Mar 22, 2026 +11
That would be the only real small issue I have with it. I read the novel so I know what the story is, but for people who haven’t read it I don’t know if they stressed the urgency of the situation enough. They could have added a scene or two for that. Other than that I loved it.

I loved it. It felt like Pixar’s version of Arrival meets Interstellar. I kinda knew going in that the tone was going to be more “silly” with Lord and Miller directing, and honestly, with that caveat it became my favorite movie of the year so far.
