No, no. He'll take a large tithe for the privilege of his protection, but if he's seen to execute people who stooge for him then flee to him when the jig is up, people will be less inclined to stooge for him. The cons of killing them for their assets outweigh the pros.

And even then, the moment it is plausibly denial-able: "Oops, Assad had a stroke, old age coupled with stress effects of having led a country as gloriously as he did."
26
kaisadilla_0x1 1 day ago +7
Also, defenestration is a message. You are not supposed to believe they actually fell of a window - quite the opposite: you are supposed to understand it wasn't an accident or a suicide. The choice isn't coincidential either: how many people do you know that have died like that? It's picked precisely because it's obvious it's not an accidental death. If you just want to get rid of some guy who's no longer useful, there's a million different ways that will go unnoticed.
7
TheSaxGandalf 2 days ago +10
True. The defenestration happens when one is giving off vibes that they want to escape his control or his paranoia gets the better of him.

I was wondering what assad has been up to. >Assad and his brother Maher, the former commander of the Syrian military's 4th Armored Divison, were charged in absentia. Opposition activists accuse that military division of killings, torture, extortion, drug trafficking and running its own detention centers. https://www.dw.com/en/syria-first-trial-of-assad-era-officials-opens-in-damascus/a-76944735

Yeah, I'm assuming the article is correct in mentioning the US, UAE, and Uruguay. UAE is a typical hideout of Hungarian criminals these days, but I assume in the current situation the US might be easier for Butcher & co. (Mészáros, the family name of one of the biggest thieves means Butcher in English.)
56
wrosecrans 1 day ago +8
A country like Uruguay is small enough that part of me imagines there's a dedicated office in the tourism bureau in those places trying to attract billionaire criminal oligarchs, just to get into the conversation and be on the radar. Making little mailer pamphlets, "We know you have a lot of options for where to hide you dirty money, consider sunny Uruguay! We promise top level services, amazing food, and very few extradition treaties." Getting even a single billionaire oligarch to move to Uruguay is probably a noticeably little bump in the national economy. Construction crews hired to make mysterious villas, security forces hired to scare off the locals, import/export services to move drugs and smuggled luxury goods. It adds up to a lot of jobs. And for some of them, it's not just a job -- it's a lifelong career. (Especially the body guards. A lifetime career guarding an evil oligarch billionaire might not last two weeks...)
8
ClubsBabySeal 1 day ago +15
Uruguay is a developed country with a gdp per cap on par with many European countries. It's actually a little wealthier than Hungary. So no, none of that. Maybe if they moved to Belize or something.

This is the plan for all corrupt leaders when they are voted out. I hope now something is in place to freeze all assets of corrupt leaders until all trials are complete, and hopefully all the money accumulated while they, family members, cabinet members, and enablers in office can be confiscated by the government as part of a sentence. It will be a great way to pay down the debt they caused.
925
Prestigious_Health_2 2 days ago +200
Would be almost impossible. These oligarchs made most of their wealth "lawfully" because Orban shaped those laws accordingly. Meszaros is a chilhood friend of Orban who was running a failed construction firm in 2007. He's now a billionaire. Orban personally gave him all the big government contracts via some legal loopholes. You'd be seizing assets that were obtained trough legitimate business activity which is hard to build a case around. The EU hasn't managed to legally seize the frozen assets of Russian oligarchs either. We're even paying the maintenance on those yachts because not doing so would result in a lawsuit for destroying property.

Looking at the Panama Papers and similar, we cant even track this wealth well enough to know how much they have, let alone stop them from moving it. The Panama Papers found 11.5 trillion hidden away FROM A SINGLE FIRM. Edit: For reference, the total budget for the entire US government for a year is 7 trillion.

The allied forces created an entire international legal body and drafted new categories of crimes as a foundation for the Nuremberg trials. They couldn't legitimately prosecute Nazi's without codifying those crimes into some kind of legal framework that could be applied internationally. Magyar will have to overhaul Hungary's legal system to have a realistic chance at seizing billionaire's assets. Of course they deserve to have their wealth confiscated. But it's not realistically achievable.

> They couldn't legitimately prosecute Nazi's without codifying those crimes into some kind of legal framework that could be applied internationally. And retroactively, which is usually illegal.

Can't they pass the law to nationalize the property obtained by favoritism from the previous government? While only applying that to the most egregious cases?
2
Prestigious_Health_2 2 days ago +7
They would have to companesate the billionaires unless they can prove the properties are proceeds of crime. I can imagine it's hard to prove "favoritism by the previous government" in the court of law. Even then, you're prosecuting people for doing something that wasn't illegal at the time.

America is the zero sum game for corruption.  While America is corrupt. Oligarchs own the world.  If America ever scrubbed this corruption off, it would retaliate against the oligarchy on a global scale and that would be the end of them.  They know that and that's why they've gone all in on hijacking america. It's eat or be eaten for them after what they've done. They know the truth will come out sooner or later on the big scale and they need to have this country locked down and its history erased before that happens.
44
Zydian488 1 day ago +22
> If America ever scrubbed this corruption off, it would retaliate against the oligarchy on a global scale and that would be the end of them. We aren't some superhero who is having a bad time and will come save the world after we find ourselves or some shit. America can't save the world from oligarchy and it isn't our job to. True we need to stamp it out here, but we reeeeeally need to change this attitude of sticking our noses elsewhere so often. Lets just focus on making the USA stable again and then only help other countries when they f****** ask for it maybe. It's our responsibility to control our government, not anyone else's.
22
Plastic-Fox0293 1 day ago +5
America has mechanisms of global reach. If we put oligarchs on a manhunt list, where are they gonna run to?  The corporate oligarchy has hijacked the entire Western world order and hegemony and none of this ends until they're held accountable.

I don’t think the right Americans are truly absorbing the contents of your comment. I have preached this since his first administration … nothing. I will hear about Hunter Biden and $50 million though. Can’t hear enough about him … Jesus … missing the forest for the trees. This is what half my fellow Americans wanted though. A grifting yankee. We were told as kids about suited up Yankee grifters like the Mexican kids were warned about chupacabras. To watch my fellow brothers I was raised with sit there and bend knee to such a pathetic piece of shit. How f****** embarrassing. As they watch the rich get richer and the poorer get poorer. They celebrate their own misfortune cause some dipshit made them feel bigger than someone else. The kinship I once felt with my fellow statesmen has been dissolved. They took my home state that I love, regardless of its flaws, and turned it into a place that helps manufacture and churn out much of today’s hate that this administration needs to survive. I won’t name my state for anon purposes (might guess) but if you know … shame on us.

Everyone knew this would happen. This statement is just a confirmation, and a declaration that Tisza has evidence, or else the government would have already sued.

Why would they only sue if they had *no* evidence?
18
kilapitottpalacsinta 2 days ago +15
(Edit: sorry i just realised what i messed up, English is hard sometimes. By government in the previous answer i meant the acting Fidesz government, not the Tisza one that would form in two weeks from now.) Because if you are sued for slandering someone's name, it is up to you to provide evidence on what you said is true. So if Tisza had no evidence when saying this, the ones affected could sue freely and get compensation money from Tisza.

He can't do so until May 9th. Regardless, he has publicly called on law enforcement to not allow the expatriation of funds that are suspected stolen, emphasizing that refusing to do so goes against the law and will result in prosecution. He also added that even if the beneficiaries of Orbán's corruption fled to countries that do not have extradition treaties signed with Hungary, there are no guarantees that he can't arrange those treaties in the near future.
32
Falsus 2 days ago +4
And of course, just because there is no extradition treaties doesn't mean that extradition is impossible. Just that there is no standard process for the extradition. Though I doubt Russia or USA is going to play ball regardless.

Yeah, Magyar is not stupid. From the article >The leader of the Tisza party called on the National Tax and Customs Administration to immediately freeze assets he claims were illegally acquired. He also urged the Prosecutor General and National Police to arrest those responsible for “damaging the Hungarian people by many trillions of forints” before his government officially takes office in May.
19
kilapitottpalacsinta 2 days ago +38
Sadly the very same people who flee are those that can issue arrests and freeze assets. Best we can do is trying to save as much evidence as possible (for example people scan through the trash bins of ministries and collect all the shredded paper documents they can carry) and rush the formation of a new government as fast as possible. The first session of the parliament is on May 9, and for the first time a new government will form instead of waiting for a later session, eliminating days or even weeks from the last Orbán government. There are rumours that banks stopped many transfers lately on suspicion of money laundering, but many banks are, again, owned by the very same people who flee or their close friends.

AnotherCuppaTea 2 days ago +5
If true, that's classic grounds for an "odious debt" tort in the International Criminal Court against Orban, et al., as well as the corrupt banks or other parties who took advantage of the Hungarian people and the incoming administration. Such lawsuits are rare, hard to win, and costly and protracted in their litigation, but they are an option in such cases as Hungary's.
5
tlst9999 2 days ago +25
They're fleeing Hungary with billions, but here's the one thing billionaires don't want you to know. Their businesses, buildings and land are still in the country. The rich, when leaving any country, can only take liquid assets, while the actually important non-liquid assets which form a larger portion of their wealth cannot be moved so easily. We'll expand this to include "If we tax the rich, they'll leave." Yes, they'll leave, but their properties won't.

Oh, they are doing the Milošević-plan. For the people who don't know, Slobodan Milošević, our "beloved" leader, the leader of former Yugoslavia, wanted to do that but actually stayed in Yugoslavia for some reason, instead his family, his wife, son and daughter left for Russia with untold millions, if not billions. Then they created life of luxury and decadence for themselves in Moscow's richest district. To add insult to injury, his grandson and granddaughter returned to Serbia and even worse, his grandson is a politician. If you don't want their offsprings to come back and bite you in the ass in 20 or so years, please, arrest them and process them unless you want to listen to them spewing how Orban was good.

Serious discussion aside, it's wild to me that this dude is just straight up named Magyar. I don't know how common that is, but it's funny as hell imagining someone named American Smith becoming the president or something.
15
Formal-Apartment855 2 days ago +14
"Peter American" would be a more precise equivalent. Magyar is the family name, Péter is the given name. It's not a super common name in Hungary, but also not rare either. Tóth (Slovakian/Slavic), Németh (German), Oláh (Romanian), Horváth (Croatian) are all more common family names compared to Magyar. Tóth is like the 3rd most common family name in Hungary, Magyar is around the 40th or something. Around 20% of Hungarians have family names that refer to ethnic/national/etc origins, so 1 in 5 people have a family name that refers to some ethnicity or national origin or idk whatever this is called in English. As a Hungarian, his maternal grandpa's nickname is incomparably more funny to me. ("Paul is Legally Binding" lol) [https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Er%C5%91ss\_P%C3%A1l](https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Er%C5%91ss_P%C3%A1l) I love that finally more people start to learn the Hungarian word for Hungarian because of this... I know eg. Arabic, Turkish, Slovakian, Croatian, Slovenian and some other languages had it right since before 1000BC basically. But English didn't fully get the memo (outside of scientific texts). Maybe now English will get the memo?

it's a relatively common name, but a nice coincidence (especially given the "patriotic" stance of Orban's party) some more fun fact: The campaign manager of Péter Magyar was Péter Tóth, whose family name "Tóth" basically means "Slovak" (_and_ also Slovenian, which are two rather different countries, but that's history for you!); furthermore, he is a pretty much politically left-ish guy, while Magyar is center-right

Capital flight may be real but it isn’t really bad for a country. Those billionaires were never paying into the country anyway, so if they leave, Hungary doesn’t lose the money they “would have gotten” from tax, since they would get nothing either way. What they could do here is freeze assets, then they would actually get something.
