Quentin Tarantino says TV is forgettable, unlike movies. Vince Gilligan and Rhea Seehorn strongly disagree.

Tarantino movies often reference old TV shows he watched growing up, which only further makes this feel old manny.

f0gax Mar 20, 2026 +31
I always thought he was Gen X, but it turns out he was born at the end of the Boomer generation. Which explains a lot.
31
EchoesofIllyria Mar 20, 2026 +81
Does it? What difference would it make if he was born two years later? People are too obsessed with these somewhat arbitrary generational divides.
81
kahner Mar 20, 2026 +2
it's not a year by year thing, but there's definitely generational differences that influence people's thinking about lots of things. the names and years are just shorthand, not hard divides.
2
Karl_with_a_C Mar 20, 2026 +4
It's become so common to just hate every generation that's not yours and I'm pretty tired of it. It's just another prejudice. It's bigotry. Social media has sown such divide between generations when we should be coming together instead. Comments like that are so common and it's sad to see.

Even for a known pretentious a******, he really is on a pretentious a****** streak lmao.

He’s always been like this.
35
anatomized Mar 20, 2026 +15
exactly. back in the 90's he was an enfant terrible and got a lot of attention for them and it seemed refreshing. but now he's just some old man bitching.
15
mauri9998 Mar 20, 2026 +7
Was he liquid solid or solidus?
7
Massive_Weiner Mar 20, 2026 +3
Also helps that he was at the peak of his career in the late 90s/early 00s. I don’t hate any of his movies, but his early string was untouchable.
3
2Braincell2Furious Mar 20, 2026 +3
He should like, shut up and film.
3
mephistophe_SLEAZE Mar 20, 2026 +39
So desperate to be relevant in this moment, he'll say or do anything (except make that final film).
39
alyosha_pls Mar 20, 2026 +21
The whole "ten films" thing is just such a stupid corner to paint himself into.
21
MrPotatoButt Mar 20, 2026 +2
I don't think so. Its just a "Jedi Mind Trick" artistes like to use to make them realize the mortality of their careers. Then they fight for or agonize each movie like its their last. Bowie used to do it in his early career (before his Heroes album).
2
CrissBliss Mar 20, 2026 +44
Like his random dislike of Matthew Lillard
44
Federico216 Mar 20, 2026 +10
And Paul Dano, and Denis Villeneuves Dune. It kinda feels like he says some of this stuff just to make headlines.
10
thesaddestpanda Mar 20, 2026 +8
Or he’s a misanthrope and terrible person. He was one of weinsteins best friends too.
8
Dry_Departure_7813 Mar 20, 2026 +45
Yeah, remember that time he said those 13 year olds wanted to be drugged unconcious and assaulted by polanski.
45
Responsible-Eye6788 Mar 20, 2026 +16
He also said he directly knew what Harvy Weinstein was doing to those girls and stayed silent.  More like he was an active participant and didn’t want to be grouped in with his old best friends
16
JinSakai619 Mar 20, 2026 +45
Yeah, I don't care about a guy who says 13 year old r*** victim of Roman Polanski wanted it because she was a party girl. All of his movies are basically remixes of good stuff anyway. The way the dude goes out of his way to write himself a character that says n word and the most racist shit in almost every film is also really f****** weird.
45
r3volver_Oshawott Mar 20, 2026 +11
It took me forever to realize that he is the pretentious cinephile that would work at a Blockbuster and belittle people for their rental choices I mean, literally - he used to brag about growing up working in movie rentals, but it wasn't until recent years that I started putting two and two together and realized that QT working at a rental outlet would basically be this exact cliche
11
tfhermobwoayway Mar 20, 2026 +3
I mean it does kinda suck that there are no rental stores any more. Growing up I would have loved to work the counter at a video game shop and spend hours lecturing unwilling grandparents on what game is best for their child. Instead I had to be a waiter.
3
r3volver_Oshawott Mar 20, 2026 +3
It does, it just also sucks that a lot of them also had Quentin Tarantino types that just plain sucked lol, I couldn't imagine just wanting to rent Toy Story in 1996 and having this retractable chin of a man tell me my children are 'fucked' and that they 'need to watch some real cinema' idc how many Oscars he's gonna win in the future, just lemme rent my Pixar right now, champ😮 *and tbf, a lot of those judgmental rental store employees were also comic store employees, or GameStop employees, but more commonly they're customers, and they're the retail hell ones that you expect, a store clerk like Tarantino would be another store clerk's worst nightmare, and a TON of women I know who used to work at GameStop had to deal with these kinds of nerdy shitheads. I shudder to think how straight up sexist a dude like Tarantino would be if a woman he was attracted to came into a store asking for a suggestion; he'd be insufferable, I just know it lol

Maximum_joy Mar 21, 2026 +2
I think there's a Portlandia episode where a film dude makes a girl he won't admit he likes watch The Cabinet of Dr Caligari

Quentin has a lot of weird.
9
TheGiftOf_Jericho Mar 20, 2026 +2
Objectively wrong on this one too haha, why would a TV series be less memorable than movie, it's just about quality and intrigue, and that goes for both.
2
BlackPresident Mar 19, 2026 +63
Sometimes I wonder if his movies actually suck and I’m too dumb to realise.
63
LeCafeClopeCaca Mar 19, 2026 +109

I personally think this has lead to a lot of are current day problems, not because a director thinks this but because so many people in many different levels of power do.
4
TebbaMcPebba Mar 19, 2026 +87
Nah he makes good stuff he’s just a weirdo like most directors
87
bravetailor Mar 19, 2026 +54
The actual biggest myth in the movie fandom is that he wasn't always annoying. I remember watching Pulp Fiction in the 90s, and then seeing interviews with him, and yes he was an annoying t*** back then too. It still didn't make me think any less of the movie, nor my enthusiasm for his later movies. (Though I will throw it out there that there is a noticeable drop in quality in how his movies are paced after Sally Menke died)
54
JuzoItami Mar 20, 2026 +39
He *used* to be a brash, young annoying t***. Which people could kinda forgive. But these days he’s just another middle-aged annoying t***. Which isn’t as forgivable.
39
gdshaffe Mar 20, 2026 +26
Fiona Apple used to date Paul Thomas Anderson, and has a story about how she was in a room for some time with Paul and Quentin Tarantino, who were doing cocaine and talking about movies. She described it as a circle of Hell.
26
Cipherpunkblue Mar 20, 2026 +15
Even better, she brought up this as the thing that made her quit cocaine.

Tarantino is an excellent filmmaker and may be one of the best of his time. He’s also a f****** idiot.
13
riptaway Mar 20, 2026 +13
Honestly, I think most are overrated. Everyone praises his dialogue but I think it's often cringey and overdone
13
connor42 Mar 20, 2026 +3
I think he is overrated But he still makes better films than the majority of currently working directors I saw 85 films in cinema last year, 200 new (to me) watches overall
3
Disastrous-Special30 Mar 20, 2026 +6
100% agree. The dialogue always seems like it’s written by someone who likes the smell of their own farts. And it probably was.
6
Responsible-Eye6788 Mar 20, 2026 +6
They really do suck for the most part, but it’s not because you are dumb. His films constantly break established film rules and he gets called brilliant for it; not because he is, but because people have labeled him that for so long they don’t want to change.  It’s about social signaling. People were TOLD his movies were good for so long that disagreeing meant going against group think. Which creates the same signals in the brain as flight or fight responses and ego death becomes a threat.  Eventually it got to where if you didn’t like his movies, people would actively find things wrong with you. The most common thing to bring up was how his moves are anti racism or anti nazi, so if you say you don’t like them, people have an easy way to attack you. Once you start defending yourself as not a racist or nazi, you can no longer defend yourself about not liking his films. He has been, and always will be, a shitty movie maker and a horrible human being who has gotten away with a lot of really dark shit behind the scenes.  The worst part is younger people have no clue because he worked HARD to have his past erased during the #metoo movement
6
Danominator Mar 20, 2026 +1
His movies are all an hour too long.
1
Charrbard Mar 19, 2026 +8
Some genuinely do suck imo.
8
HenroTee Mar 19, 2026 +6
He is genuinely a great director, but to me a mid writer. He just doesn't know how to end his films anymore in any other way than just a bloodbath. And that is me speaking as a big fan of his earlier work. Reservoir Dogs, pulp fiction, jackie brown, kill bill are classics.
6
bravetailor Mar 20, 2026 +10
Funny enough I think the opposite: he's a better writer than a director. I wouldn't say there is a signature visual style or an unusual level of technical obsession in his movies. His works don't display the degree of formal rigor that characterizes someone like a Mann, Malick or Scorsese. He's functional but he doesn't play with film language to the same extent. But his movies tend to have pretty great dialogue (or at least his better ones do), and he's great at creating moments of tension through dialogue. When you think of QT you remember the scenes of who said what, but you don't necessarily remember beautifully composed singular shots, or scenes where the editing or camera tell the story. He does have a great ear for music, though.
10
TVCasualtydotorg Mar 20, 2026 +3
He's like Stephen King, where everything in his writing is great right up to the finale.
3
SudoDarkKnight Mar 20, 2026 +2
No they are legitimately great . Many assholes and shitheads make fantastic art. Hollywood and the music industry is sure proof of this lol
2
The_Erlenmeyer_Flask Mar 20, 2026 +12
If he thinks TV is forgettable, I wonder why he did a 2 part season finale on CSI.

3

Isn't Quentin like a big Star Trek fan? Like TOS? I'm sure he meant specifically modern TV but like he can't even be **consistently** pretentious lol
3
Divine_fashionva Mar 20, 2026 +3
Yes and he’s also previously said he’s a Friends and HIMYM fan lol Sometimes I think he’s deliberately trying to be edgy, because he contradicts himself so much
3
tobylaek Mar 20, 2026 +3
Always has…he’ll go on for like five minutes about how some 70s director is like a plumber in how they approach cinematography and everyone acts like it’s the most insightful thing ever said about film when it’s actually like some drunk film student at a bar.

1
tirohtar Mar 20, 2026 +1
He has some obviously bad and uneducated takes basically all the time. It's really annoying because at least some of his movies are really good/entertaining so one can't just disregard him as a dilletant. One take of his that made me shake my head was that he refuses to watch Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies because he already saw the "original" by David Lynch. Anyone who knows anything about literature and film knows that the original is the *book* by Frank Herbert, and that Lynch's version *completely* butchered the themes and main messages of the story. With his opinion, Tarantino basically outed himself as not having even basic knowledge about one of the most influential entries of scifi literature and film making.
1
SwagginsYolo420 Mar 20, 2026 +1
He really talks a lot of stupid shit sometimes, and has for decades.

160
EmekaEgbukaPukaNacua Mar 19, 2026 +62
He’s been saying this for years. He’ll bring up some good tv show, give it props then say but then 2 weeks later he can’t remember anything about it so thus TV shows are pointless.
62
Mentoman72 Mar 20, 2026 +32
I think there is a slight plague (currently) of mini series kind of taking over what movies used to do. I just watched Mad Men for the first time and reminded myself why tv used to work. Yearly checks in on characters where you could believably develop them. I feel like creators are having a hard time with whatever is causing the 2-3 year delays and they face more pressure. Mad Men did 13 episodes a year every year and it left them a lot of room for experimentation and, more importantly, room to fail (in my opinion, some episodes of mad men are better than others. Now shows are basically long movies with sequels that come out 2.5-3 years later and rarely go past three seasons. It just isn’t comforting like it used to be. People just want to hang out with their characters, but when you only get 8 episodes every couple of years, anything that doesn’t advance the plot feels like filler.

He's getting old an opinionated. Which happens. But people keep interviewing him thinking its 2002 and he's going to drop some obscure film knowledge instead of grumpy old man stuff. And Yeah I'd disagree. 21st century has belonged to tv more than movies imo. Mostly HBO. Even setting aside all of the super hero & comic book genre, feels like they keep making the same movies with the same people doing slightly different variations of the same thing.

RGJ587 Mar 19, 2026 +16
Tarantino is a moron. over the past two-three decades, TV has had a far greater effect on the public zeitgeist than movies have, which is truly the mark for what could be considered "forgettable" or not. Seinfeld, Friends, Big Bang, HIMYM, Sopranos, Breaking Bad, GOT, Lost, Walking Dead, The Office, Modern Family, Always Sunny, 24, Homeland, Ozark, True Detective, White Lotus, Mad Men, i mean i could go on and on and on. You would be hard-pressed to find someone in the western world who hasn't been affected at least one way or another from one of these shows.
16
Toby_O_Notoby Mar 20, 2026 +7
And that's probably why he said it. Tarantino is a huge fan of going the theatre experience and watching movies. And on top of that, for a long time movies were also the monoculture, starting from Jaws and Star Wars and going all the way up to everyone having a Pulp Fiction poster in their dorm. But now the thing he loves is being replaced by something else. And he's not one to go "well, I guess TV is the new Movies now" so he has to come up with some moronic reason why what he did as a kid is the only way things should be.
7
tfhermobwoayway Mar 20, 2026 +3
TV is the great artform of the 21st century. This entire era of history will be defined by the TV shows that come out of it. Movies were the 20th and theatre was the 19th. Right now TV is in vogue.
3
ShagPrince Mar 20, 2026 +4
Surely the Simpsons sits comfortably atop that list re: public zeitgeist.
4

foureyedinabox Mar 20, 2026 +2
Quentin Tarantino obviously remembered the TV show the high chaparral where he blatantly ripped off elements from an episode to put in Django unchained. A bounty hunter posing as a Dentist riding around with a buggie with a giant tooth on the top lifted directly from an episode of the high chaparral.
2
judocobra Mar 20, 2026 +2
Quentin is sort of right though, atleast for Vince since he needs like two years to cone out with a second season of his new show.

I heard Quentin bat around the idea of doing a TV show as a work around to his "10 movie rule" he set for himself. I wonder if he has run into road blocks and this is his way of protecting his ego.

The only thing I know about once upon a time in Hollywood is that one meme of DiCaprio pointing at the TV, but I cant forget the finales of shows I watched decades ago, and the audience reactions to them, and the staying power they've had over the years.

I'll never forget the suffocated chicken episode of MASH. hint it wasn't a chicken.

Says someone who makes movies by literally stealing everything from other filmmakers
1
zerked77 Mar 20, 2026 +1
I like Tarantino movies but I'd rather not hear him speak or his opinions on nearly anything outside of film.
1
ich_bin_alkoholiker Mar 20, 2026 +1
Sounds like copium.
1
work4work4work4work4 Mar 20, 2026 +1
I'd guess that's right for Quentin, considering most of TV is shot from the waist up.
1
marccoogs Mar 20, 2026 +1
The older I get, the cornier he is in my opinion.
1
f0gax Mar 20, 2026 +1
I’m well past giving a shit what QT thinks about anything.
1
ZERV4N Mar 20, 2026 +1
Don't TV show influence a vast majority of his artistic inputs? His last movie was about how great a movie star can be in a TV show, likely based on the westerns he grew up with. This m*********** just needs to make his 10th movie instead of jibber jabbering all over the place.
1
OkStrategy685 Mar 20, 2026 +1
I disagree too, and really only like a couple of his movies. I never understood all the hype.
1
raelianautopsy Mar 20, 2026 +1
Wtf is with Tarantino lately
1
MobileNerd Mar 20, 2026 +1
Yeah watch Lost and tell me it’s forgettable
1
Roakana Mar 20, 2026 +1
Right now TV is way more dynamic and memorable. Also WTF does Quentin matter. He is quitting directing. If film were so awesome why is he scurrying away. I have enjoyed many of his movies but this new bitchy phase… f*** him.
1
AngryGames Mar 20, 2026 +1
Dude's movies are forgettable outside of Pulp Fiction (to me, anyway).  Television isn't forgettable at all. I grew up seeing Star Wars in theaters as a young kid. Watched the original Battlestar Galactica and the Buck Rogers with Gil Gerard and Erin Grey. V (the alien invasion TV show). Knight Rider. Dukes of Hazzard (which is problematic now, but as a kid... I still want a Charger but without the Confederate flag). ER. NYPD Blue. Sopranos. The Wire. Six Feet Under. Chernobyl. Dallas, Dynasty, Knot's Landing & Falcon Crest (grandma watched those so I did too).  I mean, I could go on for days. Some of my most memorable moments were tv shows. Movies too, but this child is yakking about tv.  Also, X-Files.

"Television is Chewing gum for your brain"
1
ImaginaryNerve Mar 20, 2026 +1
Maybe QT isn't watching the right kind of television shows for him if he's finding that so much of what he watches is just full of filler? I like both mediums and they're, at least to me, both very different and serve different purposes. But if you find that you forget most of what you watch, you may need to find something different to watch.
1
silentwhim Mar 20, 2026 +1
I mean, if that's how he feels, fine, but is Tarantino really saying he has never had a show that has stuck with him? Not even one?
1
homogenic- Mar 20, 2026 +1
He always has some odd takes lol
1
Dyslexic_Devil Mar 20, 2026 +1
Well I'd say you forget what's going on between seasons of TV shows they take so long at this point.
1
ComfortableExotic646 Mar 20, 2026 +1
I personally find movies to be more forgettable. I remember innumerable moments from LOST, Fringe, Person of Interest, Battlestar Galactica, FMAB, Mob Psycho 100, Frieren, New Girl, Community, Parks and Rec., and more. Even shows that I only *kinda* like end up with me remembering a lot of great moments. If you include shows like Tales from the Crypt, Twilight Zone, and The Outer Limits, then there's endless stories I can remember. But, movies are still good, even if I prefer television. I guess that's too hard for QT to say.
1
TVCasualtydotorg Mar 20, 2026 +1
The run up to his West End play is going to be even more cluttered with obnoxious takes, isn't it?
1
talligan Mar 20, 2026 +1
Man who makes movies says movies are more important. Figures
1
404NameOfUser Mar 20, 2026 +1
Don't get me wrong, I still love Quentin's work. However ever since he picked a fight with Paul Dano I lost a lot of respect for his opinions or views. And this is another one. I don't know what type of self medication Quentin is doing but maybe he should stop...
1
Jackielegs43 Mar 20, 2026 +1
Shame QT is such a fuckhead because man he makes good flicks
1
Jaded_Hyena_3522 Mar 20, 2026 +1
He's right. By the time they announce the next season of Pluribus, everybody's reaction is going to be "oh yeah, Pluribus"
1
Bobbi_fettucini Mar 20, 2026 +1
What a brain dead take, some of the biggest pop culture moments have happened on tv, the term jump the shark is literally a result of a popular tv show
1
Pleasant_Mail2483 Mar 20, 2026 +1
most of tarantinos films are forgettable,he just rips other peoples work off and claims its original
1
AnyDamnThingWillDo Mar 20, 2026 +1
The man talks a lot of shite.
1
steveguy13 Mar 20, 2026 +1
Why is Tarantino being such a raving prick lately? Is he gearing up for a presidential run?
1
No_Arugula_6548 Mar 20, 2026 +1
I remember shows more than movies.
1
danleon950410 Mar 20, 2026 +1
I haven't forgotten his N word drops and hi foot f*****, so he's right to some extent
1
GauchoWink Mar 20, 2026 +1
All of Tarantino’s movies are the same.
1
LayneCobain95 Mar 20, 2026 +1
Tarantino thinks he’s some kind of genius, when I feel he’s not
1
hazza987 Mar 20, 2026 +1
Hasn't he literally just said he's making a TV show set in the 1930s.
1
kain459 Mar 20, 2026 +1
We give Quentin too much air time for being so toxic.
1
DefinitelyIncorrect Mar 20, 2026 +1
Because no one still talks about breaking bad or game of thrones or the walking dead... Dumbest thing I've ever heard from him maybe.
1
KaiTheFilmGuy Mar 20, 2026 +1
Quentin Tarantino is a great director who has the shittiest opinions on almost literally everything.
1
TwoTalentedBastidz Mar 20, 2026 +1
What was forgettable was that trash ass Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Put out a good film you fking hater
1
Emergent_Phen0men0n Mar 20, 2026 +1
I love Tarantino movies but some of his opinions are laughably dumb.
1
esach88 Mar 20, 2026 +1
In my anecdotal experience, tv shows are quoted and talked about years later, far more than movies are. People are still talking about and quoting The Office. People still talk about Breaking Bad', The Wire and Sopranos? Still brought up and quoted by people i known or even online. It's pretty rare I hear discussions on a movie just months after release.
1
Reds_PR Mar 20, 2026 +1
I remember his scene in the Golden Girls more than I remember his scenes in his movies. Uh-huh!
1
easternhobo Mar 20, 2026 +1
It would be less forgettable if it didn't take 3 years to make 6 episodes.
1
ubiquitous-joe Mar 20, 2026 +1
Who could forget Peggy in her shades, walking through the hallway, toting a picture of a woman being pleasured by an octopus? I’m not really surprised movie guy prefers movies, QT just needs to be making movies to channel his energy somewhere, but he’s got in his own head with the 10 films thing. So now we have semi-retired, shit-talking QT, licking cool hwhip (TV joke!) off a slice of grandpa pie while his most unorthodox takes get inflated by modern media clickbait.
1
tfhermobwoayway Mar 20, 2026 +1
Honestly I think it’s the other way around. All the big cultural moments of the 21st century have been TV shows. Movies had their century in the 1900s. Now TV is the big thing.
1
vtastek Mar 20, 2026 +1
I mean I can fill a 500 unforgettable movies list easily where maybe 20 for tv, with half of them canceled or ruined at their finale/nth season.
1
photoguy423 Mar 20, 2026 +1
Seems like Tarantino has entered his "old man screaming at clouds" phase.
1
frankduxvandamme Mar 20, 2026 +1
Breaking Bad has stuck with me longer than 99% of the movies I've ever watched. The time commitment for most TVs shows by default makes them less forgettable than most movies.
1
self-conscious-Hat Mar 20, 2026 +1
Quentin's had a lot of L takes lately.
1
Silver-End9570 Mar 20, 2026 +2
This b**** is just saying the most controversial thing he can come up in the moment to stay relevant while we all wait for him to finish this last film and retire. He's so f****** salty it's pathetic.
2
bakeranders Mar 20, 2026 +1
I barely remember Once Upon a Time in Hollywood….fairly certain I fell asleep. Meanwhile I’m tuned in with baited breath every week for The Pitt and I can basically recite S1 of True Detective word for word
1
OhManOk Mar 20, 2026 +1
Is Quentin on some sort of tour to convince everyone he's a hot take dipshit? In the last six months, I've found out that he supports genocide and seemingly hates most art. Is Quentin a f****** republican?!
1
beargrimzly Mar 20, 2026 +1
I couldn't tell you most of the major plot beats of like any show from the last 20 years that isn't Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones. Not saying he's right to shit on tv, but like, come on now. Are we really going to try and pretend that on average you're not more likely to remember way more about a good movie than a good tv show?
1
Emotional_Signal7883 Mar 20, 2026 +1
So boring that he forgot to make the Bounty Law show he talked about.
1
NCC75567 Mar 20, 2026 +2
The more Tarantino talks about stuff the stupider and farther up his own ass he sounds.
2
UCanBdoWatWeWant2Do Mar 20, 2026 +2
Can't Tarantino just shut up
2
kahner Mar 20, 2026 +2
tarantino has really hit his old man yells at cloud phase hard.
2
MrPotatoButt Mar 20, 2026 +1
Quentin Tarantino may be a genius auteur, but he also has a lot of shitty takes. First, its how Paul Dano is a bad actor, and now this. There are so many TV shows I will remember (and episodes with iconic acting performances), from BtVS, to Angel, to Highlander, to BSG, to Mad Men (totally different genre), to Band of Brothers, to Legion (and I can't even include all the noteworthy TV performances here). Yet, even though I'll accept 10% of all movies as noteworthy, there's only a handful of them I'm really going to remember, by comparison.
1
PieRevolutionary9823 Mar 21, 2026 +1
If QT saw one of his movies, forgetting he made it, he would have some ‘hot takes’ on how contrived they are and that the director assumes too much. (I like his movies, btw. But not him)
1
Crasz Mar 21, 2026 +2
I've watched far more MASH in my lifetime than I have everything that Tarantino has made combined.
2
Kryceks-Revenge Mar 21, 2026 +2
Can someone tell Tarantino that it’s past his bedtime? He’s more boomer than the boomers now.
2
lyerhis Mar 21, 2026 +1
Is Tarantino becoming the Elon Musk of film or what.
