Question about internal diegetic sound vs. sound perspective

Posted by bucketchildx

Not sure if this is the right spot for this so I apologize if not but here goes I'm in an intro film studies class and I have to say I've been really enjoying it. Throughout the term we have to write papers on certain movies in relation to a film topic. I got my grade back on my paper on A Quiet Place in relation to sound (not including music). One of my paragraphs and key points had to do with Reagan, and how at certain points in the film we hear from her perspective as someone who is deaf/hard of hearing. I characterized this and described it in relation to sound perspective, which my professor is saying is wrong and is rather internal diegetic sound. My understanding of these concepts was that internal diegetic exists within a character's head, and sound perspective is external diegetic sound from the auditory perspective of a character. Do I have any argument here? Or am I misunderstanding the concepts at hand? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I would say it is a bit of a grey area. Internal diegetic sound refers to sound that comes from within the character, as you said, but it also refers to any distortions in audio for that character. For instance, if a character was having auditory halucinations where they hear music or other people's voices that don't exist in the world, that would be internal diegetic sound, since they are the only ones experiencing it. I can see why this would then be extrapolated to the distortions that come from being hard of hearing although I think its a bit harsh to treat it as a binary situation when I think they could easily fit in both categories.

Thanks for the response. I agree, like it could to an extent fit in both, but he took 10% off my paper because I used the term sound perspective instead of internal diegetic sound. Might email him.
