Ready for a new series. Here’s my last four- what should be my fifth?

Posted by CeilingUnlimited

1. West Wing 2. Frasier 3. Severance 4. Homeland I love smart, well-written, dramatic, premier television that will still be discussed five years from now. I’ve seen all the regulars - Sopranos through BB through The Wire, Shrinking and The Americans and 24. I need another one. What should been my #5 ? #EDIT: Thanks everyone. Halfway through this exercise last night, my wife reminded me we were two seasons behind on The Handmaid’s Tale. So, off we go to finish it. (Interesting it wasn’t recommended even once below.) Thanks for your help! #The two recommendations that peaked my interest the most from the thread were Hulu’s Paradise and the new Battlestar Galactica. We’ll head that way after finishing Handmaids. 👍

OMG I was literally going to write "It's hard to see a throughline between those four, but instinctively I want to say Barry."

Just finished season 1 of MR Robot and I'm kinda stunned at its quality. Just an amazing show. Not sure how I missed it when it aired, but if the rest of the show is as good as season 1, I'll rank it among the best shows ever made. Highly recommend it.

The modern BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. Yeah, know, the 1978 one conjures images of bad cheese sci fi. The modern one (2002-2009) is the polar opposite. Make sure if you stream it you watch the mini series first!! Streamers often don't include it with the series, stupidly. So you start on "episode 1: 33" and you're absolutely lost because you missed the 2 part movie that shows the attack and fall of mankind. The show won a Peabody award and was recognized by the U.N. it's very mid 2000s but in a good way.
2
CeilingUnlimited Mar 29, 2026 +1
What streaming service?
1
SineQuaNon001 Mar 29, 2026 +3
I want to say Amazon? It's rarely available to stream, which is weird. They have the mini to rent for $4 and then seasons 1 2 3 4 are free at the moment I think. You might need to pursue other means to get it. Physical media etc. You can carefully (avoid spoilers) ask for help finding it in r/BSG if Amazon doesn't have it. I think you can buy/rent it from a lot of places too. Apple, vudu, etc.

You watched West Wing, now you have to see how politics are REALLY done: Veep

Streaming on Disney+/Hulu. It’s best to go in as blind as possible. Seems like you enjoy political thrillers, so this is in that vein. Without spoilers, it’s about the head of the secret service (played by Sterling K. Brown) safeguarding the former U.S. President (James Marsden) and the high stakes involved with that job. Incredible performances, political intrigue, and some high concept twists that again I won’t spoil because they’re great. Give the first episode/pilot a shot. Has a cool hook and will get you invested.

CeilingUnlimited Mar 29, 2026 +1
Newsroom - done it. Not into Vampires.
1
woodford86 Mar 29, 2026 +1
I think calling it a vampire show isn’t totally fair, it’s more a historical/biographical thing where the characters just happen to be vampires. It’s some incredible story telling, a sure there is “hunting” in it but it’s never the point is what I’m saying.

6

Nobody can be objective about TV shows lol. I like to put a few tiny barbs in my comments sometimes
1
Driveshaft48 Mar 29, 2026 +2
There can be objectively in TV. There are statistics my guy The NFL dominates ratings, viewership, prices paid for ads, etc The NFL is the most popular thing on TV. Its an objective statement
2

Based off your comments, you've hit all the good ones. There is nothing left but to hate-watch: Yellowstone, Tracker, Landman, High Potential, Marshals. These are the highest viewed shows of our current era. Watch them, then return to your prestige with gratitude. Or try: Everybody Hates Chris, Fleabag, Detroiters, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Crashing (HBO), The Chair Company, Sharp Objects, Freaks & Geeks, The Golden Girls, Hacks, Always Sunny, Party Down, PEN15, Girls, The Curse, Abbott Elementary, Friday Night Lights, Twin Peaks.
