Recommend an American 80s (or 80s styling) movie. I love movies that are or look like they’re are from the American 1980s. I’ve seen most of the classic popular/blockbuster 80s films but not a lot more than those.
Open to any genres really but a mystery / thriller would be preferred. Thanks in advance!
Honest Trailers just did a video on that- [link](https://youtu.be/jKS3yKwa7n4?si=1lTuigT0gy3P46-Z).

Not a fan of the guy himself, but I have a huge soft spot for John Landis’ 80s movies. What I find interesting is that he’s not afraid to show the uglier side of Reagan-era America, and its a side you rarely see presented in big studio films.
Trading Places and Coming to America are good examples of this (as well as showing an astoundingly charismatic and hilarious young Eddie Murphy in his prime). An American Werewolf in London similarly is a wonderful time capsule of early 80s London, as well as being a showcase for the absolute peak of the practical vfx era.
You can’t really go wrong with Rob Reiner’s 80s films. His run of films from This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, The Sure Thing, Stand By Me and When Harry Met Sally are all timeless classics of their respective genres that all hold up amazingly well.
Ditto John Hughes. I’m personally more of a fan of his more adult-oriented comedies vs his teen movies but anything he touched in the 80s is well worth seeking out. Uncle Buck, Planes Trains and Automobiles and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off are personal favourites and are all perfect movies in my mind.
I had a chance to see John Carpenter’s They Live at my local cinema recently, and I was amazed at how relevant and fresh that film still feels despite very much being a product of its time. A biting satire of post-industrial America disguised as a pulpy, goofy action comedy.
I also very recently watched Johnathon Demme’s 1986 film Something Wild for the first time and really enjoyed it. Another time capsule of mid 80s NYC alternative cool. It kinda feels like a precursor to the wave of manic pixie dream girl indie romance movies of the 2000s, and its fascinating seeing baby-faced Jeff Daniels, Ray Liotta (pre-Goodfellas!) and Melanie Griffiths doing their thing.

It's technically 1990, but Total Recall feels like the last of the great 80s-style action films of the era. If you haven't seen it, it's a f****** blast.
It's funny that it feels like a quintessential 80s American action movie, despite being 1. Released in 1990 2. Starring an Austrian and 3. From a Dutch Director. But they all understand the assignment, so it fits.

Can't believe this only got 1 mention. I've shown this movie to several people in the last ten years, it's gone great every time.
