Recommendations for disturbing, artful horror

Posted by ElectricMiau

Hey! I’m craving some horror movie recommendations similar to *Raw* and *Titane* by Julia Ducournau. I’m not looking for a specific theme, but more for films that really respect the horror genre and do it justice. Something bold, unique, and unsettling. I want movies that get under your skin in unusual ways, without leaning on c**** jump scares. Any suggestions?

Since you are ok with foreign language horror I'll throw out **When Evil Lurks**

Piggybacking to add "Aterrados" by the same director.

Yeah, I saw it. In my opinion, the first part with all the rural beliefs? was pretty interesting. But toward the end it got way too “Hollywood” with the whole witchcraft stuff?, and that’s where it lost me. Still, I think it had a lot of potential.

A Field in England messed me up for weeks - it's this trippy English Civil War thing that gets progressively more unhinged. Also throw Possessor on your list, Brandon Cronenberg does body horror that'll make you question reality for days

Posessor had a great theme, but poor execution in my opinion. Other than a couple of scenes, the movie fell flat to me. The poster is incredible, though.

The tent scene with all the screams in A Field in England is horrifying. One of my favorite films.

Aniara made me feel existentially horrible in 100 ways

Was the first one to come my mind as well. Unsettling in multiple ways and just happens to not be tagged as horror, but definitely is for an adult mind.

A Wounded Fawn Bliss Mandy Keeper …all very beautiful looking, varying degrees of disturbing or scary.

Suspiria

Yeah, I’ve seen all the Suspiria movies. But idk, none of them really win me over. Dario Argento’s visuals are absolutely unmatched, though.

I was going to say Suspiria too, to be fair. What you were asking for with the adjectives you used, is literally what the remake is. Now that you’ve mentioned you bounced if Suspiria, I’ll go the other way: the Korean film The Wailing. It’ll suck you in and won’t let you go.

*Bacurau*! *Men* (2022) just so many beautiful shots *Marianne* (miniseries, the best) *Watcher* (2022) with Maika Monroe is great, not the most disturbing ever but just fantastic art and suspense *Them* season 1 *Saint Maud*

For sure watch Marianne.

Caveat and Oddity are both great.

Oddity is fantastic. A couple of the most legitimately scary moments I’ve seen in a while. The sequence with the tent is just A++.

The Eyes of My Mother is a good one. Also Demons (1971) is tops for me as far as more art house stuff goes.

The Eyes of My Mother. Trust me, watch it.

All of the following are excellent pieces of Asian cinema with artful or arthouse quality: I Saw the Devil (2010) The Wailing (2016) Pulse (2001) Cure (1998) Perfect Blue (1997) Suicide Club (2001) Onibaba (1964) And then as a pick-me-up, House (1977)

The Cell is the most beautiful horror I've ever seen. Some have criticized it for poor acting and story but the visuals are amazing. Tarsem Singh also made The Fall which is generally considered better, but isn't horror. Edit: Starring Jennifer Lopez, Vince Vaughn, and Vincent D'onofrio. Agreed, but [this music video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wokbmH1iGtU) is a better trailer.

Climax would be perfect for you

Climax and the wolf house both are best
1
ElectricMiau Mar 24, 2026 +1
Yeah!! I watched both and they’re awesome. The stop motion in The Wolf House is insane, especially because they use the stop motion to tell the story in such a unique way that it really sticks with you. Honestly, it’s an amazing piece of work.

A few nights ago I decided to watch the first film from director Brandon Cronenberg (the son of David): **Antiviral**. It's not great, but it's a very impressive debut work. It showed remarkable assurance and intelligence; and it used its insinuating black-satire Body Horror and chilly sensuality to explore society's Obsession with Celebrity in a very creepy way. Here's an insightful review: https://www.avclub.com/antiviral-1798176420

Not quite a true horror, but Perfect Blue is an incredible psychological thriller with quite an ending. Let the Right One In is a fantastic vampire horror. Videodrome is a slow burn but one of the best body horror films ever made.
