Reminder that Exxon knew about climate change since the 70s

The greenhouse effect has been understood since the mid 1800s and the correlation with industrialization was established in the 1910s.

Sure, what they mean is that we have well documented evidence that Exxon *acknowledged* the damage they were doing in the 70's.
244
ThVosMar 24, 2026
+96
For sure. My point in mentioning the earlier stuff is twofold:
(1) To highlight that the changes were considered obvious enough to be studied in detail and quantified before the end of the 19th century.
(2) That even Exxon's cover up should be understood within the broader pattern of anti-environmental, anti-humanitarian decision making by industrial interests.

While this is true, it is misleading.
The Keeling Curve was (more or less) *proven* in the late 1950s. NOAA began their own tracking of CO2 levels in the 1970s.
This is all to say, the science community knew as of those points. But it really doesn’t become a completely unavoidable/undeniable phenomenon until James Hansen’s famous senate testimony in 1988. You can make reasonable claims about public deniability until the Hansen testimony which really put the concept of climate change as we understand it today firmly in the public consciousness.

They claimed they would raise rates 10% where I'm at after data centers opened up. Most people's bills literally doubled compared to last year. My girl moved out of her apartment last month and the last 2 weeks no one was living there her bill went up by 40%. There's radiator heat and.nothing plugged in.
We went the only people who noticed the insane electric bill increases. People are livid. There was no vote on these data centers but they were planned years ago so there was very little protest either. They dropped property values all around them significantly too.

I have good news and bad news. Depending on where you live, climate change might lead to stronger winter storms and larger single storm snow totals due to more water in the atmosphere and weird jet stream and polar vortex instability, while at the same time reducing overall snowfall.
So you'll get hot summers, warm winters, lots of rain, but also still get 20" of snow at once that you have to deal with.

It didn't snow in Colorado until the last week of November/first week of December, when it dropped 0.2 inches then didn't snow again until nearly January where I live. We've gotten 2 other snow storms, neither more than a few inches. And it's mostly been in the 50s-60s, without even frosting at night. There were a couple of weeks in Jan-Feb where it hit the 70s, and last week it got into the low 80s where I'm at.
Normally, it starts snowing late September into October here, and continues through March, which is our snowiest month, with occasional snows through April on the front range (June or so in the mountains). There are already water restrictions because it's been so dry that some people have been watering their yards since January. And the snowpack in the mountains is around 40%, the lowest on record so far.

The arctic jet stream historically had a steady wave effect to it. Now it's a more aggressive wave, with sudden dips & peaks that rapidly change the weather.
When I was in high school we had a mock debate for climate change. What changed my mind from "there's no man made global warming" was the fact the arctic et stream was growing increasing unstable. This was over a decade ago.

This is what I always think when I read those kinds of comments, and it always makes me feel a bit frustrated. I'm sure they're trying to come to terms with the devastation themselves, but it just feels soul-crushing to imagine the loss of all these species. From plants and little bugs of all kinds to the largest living creatures you can think of across the world, the idea that the planet itself will continue to exist long after that is gone is not at all comforting. To me, it's all that rich biodiversity that is the world.

But luckily, the US (Trump) government is paying a wind generator builder $1 billion to not build anything while he forces unprofitable coal power plants to remain online.
All hail Herr Fuhrer tRump

"Global warming is fake news because it snowed somewhere yesterday" is basically the entirety of right-wing understanding of climate change.

I’ve lived in Vegas for 4 years, and March is usually my favorite month. 70s, sunny, perfect. We’re nearing 100 already and I know Phoenix has already seen over 110. This sucks.

It’s march and in Oklahoma we’ve already had 3 90+ days. This summer is gonna be brutal. I just hope to get out of my rental before then because my a/c is old and can’t keep up.

6,800' in Wyoming where we have no snow and we've been in the mid 70s. That's late May to early June weather. We've also already been under fire watches.

Here in Raleigh we're on a weather roller coaster. Last week it was 90 during the day and had snow in the area that night. It's going to break records again tomorrow with highs near 90 and then drop into the 30s and 40s again then back up near 90 on Wednesday
