redd.it: 30% less typing!

Posted by raldi

As you may know, listnook has a five-year-old [preference](/prefs) entitled "display links with a listnook toolbar" that lets you bring along a 20px strip of listnook whenever you click a submission. [[screenshot](http://www.listnook.com/help/toolbar)] It's especially useful when opening a bunch of links up in background tabs, solving the issue of "Why did I open [this random picture](http://www.listnook.com/tb/eohp9) two hours ago?" It's also turned out to be a good de facto listnook shortlink system. Instead of having to pass around this mouthful: http://www.listnook.com/r/science/comments/em5zw/father_and_son_launch_an_hd_camera_and_an_iphone/ You can just use the toolbar link: http://listnook.com/em5zw This is what the "share" button has always done, by the way (have you ever tried it?) Your friend gets a link to the toolbar version, and this way they can see the content, the headline and, should they desire to go exploring, a way to get to the comments. Ideally this will lead them to create an account, and thus listnook moves one step closer to world domination. Anyway, the reason we're writing about all this today is that we've acquired the domain `redd.it`, shaving a few characters off our shortlinks and bringing them down to a size where we can put them in the sidebar. (Do you see this submission's shortlink up there on the right?) FAQ: Q1. Is listnook entering the URL shortening business? A1. No. We just acquired a cool domain and wanted to show it off. Note for adblockers: If you made an exception for listnook the simple way (by clicking the stop sign and saying "Disable on listnook.com"), that'll apply to every link you visit in the toolbar. If you only want to make an exception within listnook, and keep adblock on for external sites viewed inside the toolbar frame, you should instead set things up as described in [/help/adblock](/help/adblock). We'll end with a protip that, for whatever reason, not a lot of people know about. Skip it if you're easily confused: If you're on an external site, and you want to wrap the listnook toolbar around it, you can just prepend "redd.it/" to the existing URL. For example, if you're visiting a hot new search engine at `http://www.google.com`, just change that to `redd.it/http://www.google.com` (I know it looks funny, but go with it), and you'll be taken to the listnook page for that URL. If it's not already on listnook, you'll be taken to a prefilled submission page.

I felt really bad for Tom Clancy on 9/11. He practically wrote the terrorists' game plan, I wonder if that makes him lose sleep at night.

gaoshan Dec 20, 2010 +19
What?! How could you ever get tired of: "He extracted the tungsten-carbide based blade of his Counter TAC I Kraton Handle specops combat knife, sharpened to a surgically precise .05 microns (in the obsessive way that only a man who had suffered as he had could manage) from the spinal cord of the terrorist laying crumpled before him. The memory of what they did to his wife and child had left him a barren shell of fury, held together by only the thinest veneer of sanity and the rigors of 20 years of Navy SEAL training. Now he would seek each one out and deliver a merciless knife strike to that soft spot between their C5 and C6 spinal segments... just as his training taught him and his muscle memory had so polished. However, unlike the countless opponents he had dispatched cooly and professionally in the past, these would be personal."
19
monoglot Dec 21, 2010 +6
Please tell me that's an expertly crafted parody and not an actual Clancyism.
6
gaoshan Dec 21, 2010 +10
I wouldn't call it "expert" (though I am flattered) but it is indeed parody. I read one of his books and found it exciting, read a second and saw a pattern, started a third and couldn't finish it. That bit of carefully crafted text above sums up what I think of when I hear "Tom Clancy novel". Kind of like, if you are thinking of reading one of his books, that little bit I wrote can work as a Cliff Notes version of his writing.

In firefox, at least, you can use / to enter quick find mode, which lets you type keywords and then hit enter to click on a link if it's been selected by your search. It's one of the best keyboard-fu things I've ever learned, and it's what enabled me to finally get my hand off the mouse once and for all when browsing. Of course, I still use the mouse most of the time, but when I feel really lazy...
11

The only time Italians consider themselves a single people (as opposed to distinct Sicilians, Venetians, Tuscans, Siennans, etc) is when the World Cup or Olympics are going on.
24
marcovinz Dec 20, 2010 +10
raldi, I'm italian and that is totally true. But how would you know that?
10
raldi Dec 20, 2010 +15
My wife and I drove all around the country in 2008. It was amazing. We brought a book called *Italy For the Gourmet Traveler* whose entire purpose was to explain that each region is like a country unto itself, with its own food and wine and bread and opinions totally different from the next one over.
15
marcovinz Dec 20, 2010 +3
Well, good for you! Happy you had a nice impression of our country. I'm from Rome, and I know people from Milano are a different kind of Italians, and I say it without any kind of "racism" or douchy attitude. But it's just like that, I mean people from Alabama are not like people from Oregon, right? ;P We should be called United States of Italy.

The key difference is that the listnook toolbar has always been an opt-in feature.
28

Not on the mobile site it isn't, even though it annoys the f*** out of everyone!
39
miner60 Dec 20, 2010 +6
Yep...that really ruins the mobile site experience in my opinion. With the option to turn it off, the mobile site would be just about good enough on the iPhone. Luckily there's Alien Blue.
6
GoldenBoar Dec 20, 2010 -15
Yes, but like *all* toolbars, it's useless garbage. I thought you guys had limited resources. Get your priorities straight man.
-15

It's been there since 2005. Adding the shortlink to the right column was like a four-line code change.

7
damnatio_memoriae Dec 20, 2010 +1
Bandwidth? Probably not much of a win when compared with the extra processing you'd have to do. Edit: Really? Downvotes? Classy.
1
raldi Dec 20, 2010 +4
That's a false optimization. The extra latency of another roundtrip destroys any bandwidth savings, by several orders of magnitude.
4
[deleted] Dec 20, 2010 +2
but...I don't use the listnook toolbar because when I have ad block off on your site and I visit another site with the listnook toolbar I get their very annoying ads. Oh, and most of the time I am not logged on because I want to view the default page not one taylored to my viewing habits (who wants to see chipmunk pr0wn all the time?)
2
Raerth Dec 20, 2010 +31
Any chance of making this work with the regular URL trickery? eg: redd.it/r/sublistnook - sublistnook.redd.it - etc
31
raldi Dec 20, 2010 +12
We definitely don't want it to be a general-purpose alias, but if there are a few specific use cases that could really benefit, we could add them.
12
[deleted] Dec 20, 2010 -5
Awesome, now how about fixing "you broke listnook" that I still get every other page? You can put racing stripes and a fart can on your 1990 Geo but it's still going to be a piece of shit.

[It takes time](http://www.listnook.com/r/announcements/comments/efpn0/listnook_gold_gift_clistnooks_are_now_for_sale/c17qmvd), but we're getting near the end of the list. Sorry it's been such a difficult month, but the light at the end of the tunnel is visible.
6
GoldenBoar Dec 20, 2010 -5
Perhaps when you stop spending the Listnook Gold cash on stupid gimmick domain names and wasting time on stuff like useless toolbars, more people will buy Listnook Gold. PS. Can you buy Listnook Gold with BitCoins?
-5
raldi Dec 20, 2010 +3
We wrote the toolbar code in 2005. The domain was bought by staff outside of the listnook team. Adding the sidebar link took me five minutes this morning.

I *like* sending links that have a subject in the link data. I **don't** like links to be in a frame (some site don't even work in a frame, dumdums). Short nonsense links are useful when tweeting, sure, but meh for sharing without an 80's style character limit. >256l should be enough for everyone
1
tso Dec 20, 2010 +69
On the topic of the toolbar, any chance that it can be made optional on i.listnook.com? Not every mobile browser plays nice with it hovering there in the upper left corner...
69
[deleted] Dec 20, 2010 +23
Yeah, that bugs me too. It seems listnook doesn't forward the proper user agent because a lot sites won't show their mobile site. Also, I have the setting for open links in a new window and it doesn't work on mobile. I know it isn't supported on every phone, but listnook is a techy crowd and probably most of us have devices that can do it.
23
psychoplant Dec 20, 2010 +6
Browsers send the user agent with every request, listnook has no control over that. You may be thinking of the referrer (another HTTP request header) which can be masked by the server doing a redirect, however no such thing is possible for the user agent so it must be something else, and probably isn't listnook's fault.
6
Avatar_Ko Dec 20, 2010 +15
Yeah, I find tge toolbar fairly useless on my iPhone. And then it gets annoying when I have to hit the tiny x and reload the page because it's blocking a gif or preventing a YouTube video from opening in the YouTube app.

As long as we're mentioning the Listnook toolbar, can you guys check out how the little popover works on the mobile version? I have to close the thing to actually interact with the content of the linked page.

I have never heard of an email address being s***. Does it even have a watermark?
39
joazito Dec 20, 2010 +13
Are you kidding? A s*** email domain would be... how shall I put it... *hot*!
13
lackofbrain Dec 20, 2010 +19
And it would be for mail, so perhaps it should be called something like... hot... mail... whatever@hot.mail.redd.it sounds good!

Yeah, like I'm going to give out monkeybreath@redd.it to anyone. edit: at least it's not I_RAPE_CATS@redd.it

I don't know about you, but I like having the abilitiy to check my gmail account. Listnook can't even keep the website up, nevermind handle email as well.
13
frantk Dec 20, 2010 +10
Who said something about listnook email *accounts?* He said email address, which you could then easily forward to your Gmail account.
10
beffjaxter Dec 20, 2010 +15
One reason why I stopped using the Listnook Toolbar is that it disabled the browser from resizing images down to fit within the screen space. Has this been addressed?
15
bellicosebloom Dec 20, 2010 -3
Raldi...I thought when you said 30% less typing, I thought you meant getting rid of this (2 spaces and an enter key for every line break) > 4 spaces and 2 presses of the enter key if you want a double line break, for a more visible seperation... I don't know what the actual "savings" of typing would be across every single Listnook user but you would save millions of worn out thumbs and space bars.

hudders Dec 20, 2010 +2
Except it's much more typing if you want to go to the page referenced by the home page logo now.

Hacker News has a similar shorter URL: http://hackerne.ws But they don't redirect to http://news.ycombinator.com - the shortened domain stays active (e.g. hackerne.ws/threads). It looks so much cleaner. Can redd.it do this?

>I just invested $1,000 in AOL, I'm gonna be rich! Do you know how addictive those chat rooms are? I spent 3 hours telling people my a/s/l the other day (that's age, sex and location for those of you who aren't "in the know," as we AOLers call it). This is too fun, can we have a 90s day on listnook someday where we all pretend its 1996 again?

On a semi-related note, it would be super handy if I could turn the darn toolbar off in the .compact view. That toolbar does not obey the setting in preferences, alas... :( Example: http://i.imgur.com/OIqcx.png

Fun fact: The Italian language relies mostly on speech but also partially on hand gestures, rendering it impossible for Italian to be fully understood in written form or on the internet.
28
h_h_help Dec 20, 2010 +63
I am italian and I confirm this. In fact, when you are reading Dante's *Divine Comedy* in italian, next to the text there are depictions of the hand gestures Dante was making with his left hand while he was writing with his right hand.

No offense guys, but I think that rather than buying a .it domain, you guys should have spent the money on better servers so listnook doesn't go down for hours on end during Eastern Standard primetime.

Here's a thought. (This would be a user preference that's disabled by default.) When you click a submission title, it loads in a new tab, and goes to the listnook page, but the listnook page looks for a cookie. If that cookie is not set, it sets the cookie and forwards to the actual submission. Then, in the new tab, I can hit 'back' and go back to the page of the submission. If I've got a habit of opening a pile of tabs before going through them, then I can hit back on each tab for context.

I love the toolbar feature, one change which I'd like to suggest: Some sites (flickr, twitter, facebook and stackoverflow come to mind) don't allow pages to be displayed within a frame, so when you click on a link to any of those sites, it causes problems. Would you be able to maintain a list of these sites and not show the topbar for these sites?
4
Pickphlow Dec 20, 2010 +2
I know everyone always applauds the admins for all the hard work they do, but this is my favorite part about how listnook is run: transparency. You guys announce and explain every single change you make to the site, and are flexible to withdraw or modify those changes based on the feedback from the community, and I really appreciate that. So thanks for making this an enjoyable little transparent corner of the internet.

Does the URL shortener take any steps to make sure that the short url's arent sucking the Googlejuice from the content they are linking to? Adding the canonical meta to the header of the frameset will transfer the pagerank and whatnot to the original URL which I think would be the nice thing to do. http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/02/specify-your-canonical.html
