Here is a reminder /plug for those that may not know about it that there actually is a new video game that came out in February where you can play through all of Voyager and make different choices. [Star Trek: Voyager - Across The Unknown](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2643390/Star_Trek_Voyager__Across_the_Unknown/) It's fun and made with a lot of heart.

captainhaddock Apr 3, 2026 +3
I'd get it in a heartbeat if I could play it on my Mac.
3
Shot-Maximum- Apr 3, 2026 +2
It is available on cloud gaming service GeForce Now. This might be an option for you. I personally play all my games on my Mac that way
2
Daily_concern Apr 3, 2026 +2
It runs on Mac through CrossOver.

Awesomerific7 Apr 2, 2026 +60
Boy it would be nice if this video were allowed to be posted in the Star Trek sublistnook...

mrwrestling525 Apr 3, 2026 +13
I have never been to the star trek sublistnook why would this be taken down?
13
Awesomerific7 Apr 3, 2026 +29
Basically Red Letter Media are considered by the administrators of r/StarTrek to be essentially a Trek hate group because they weren't glowingly positive of Discovery almost 10 years ago, so theres a blanket ban on any of their content.
29
Speed-Boat-Dope-666 Apr 3, 2026 +11
Their rules are kind of weird there. You can’t post images either, which I don’t think I’ve encountered in the sub for any other TV show. I only realized this because I recently named my cat after Seven of Nine, and thought that sub would find it cute, but realized there was no option to post an image of her at all. This also means no images of favorite scenes or quotes, etc. There is some good discussion there (when it isn’t people getting overly defensive of criticism of the new shows) but I find that so odd.
11
Awesomerific7 Apr 3, 2026 +2
Yeah I certainly don't avoid the sublistnook, but they gotta chill a little over there lmao
2
LaChancla911 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Can I see the photo of the kitty?
1
NuPNua Apr 3, 2026 +1
That sub was militant in only allowing positive takes for the first few years of Nu-Trek, it was bizarre, they've toned it down now, because I assume post S31 even the mods can't fake enthusiasm.
1
BlueberryWasps Apr 3, 2026 -7
i mean they bash the shit out of any new trek show any chance they get, as well as kurtzman, and do both quite a bit in this vid. i love RLM and think a blanket ban is silly, but it’s disingenuous to say it’s because they “weren’t glowingly positive” one time a decade ago. they openly and proudly hate new trek. they happily make fun of it any chance they get or act like they’re going to end it all if they have to review it. the thesis of this video is “god it’s just nice to enjoy star trek again” and mike gleefully shares starfleet academy’s poor viewing figures after making fun of the show or kurtzman like three or four times for no reason. they are certified haters.

Oh man I'd love to know too .
5
torgobigknees Apr 3, 2026 +9
because redlettermedia is not on board with nu-trek.
9
fadvex Apr 3, 2026 +27
Because it's not a Star Trek sublistnook. It's an Alex Kurtsman sublistnook disguised as a Star Trek sublistnook.

This is the most I've sat and actually thought about Star Trek Voyager in a really long time. It's not one of my favorite Star Trek series. I was a TNG person who thought DS9 was alright but wasn't quite as gripped by it as all the other Trek fans were. As such Voyager going back to the Starship in unknown space concept, which I saw as a return to the TNG formula after DS9 got experimental with everything, was really exciting for me. Then I just never really clicked that much with Voyager and it's crew. It's probably about time I go back and watch it again with older eyes.

sha_man Apr 2, 2026 +59
Mike made an excellent and profound point about how anyone who thinks the things they believed in in their 20's will be the same when they are in their 40's is nuts...lol
59
WySLatestWit Apr 3, 2026 +18
It was actually nice to see both of them really acknowledge the differences in their experience just due to the passage of time. Just being self-aware and cognizant of being very different people appreciating different things than when they were in their late teens/early 20s during Voyager's original run. Rich didn't touch it specifically, and I"m not sure if he consciously recognized it fully, but his comments about "owing Janeway an apology" for how he treated and viewed her in his youth felt like a realization that there may have been a lot of sexism directed at Trek's first woman Captain baked into his perception of the character.
18
BlueberryWasps Apr 3, 2026 +1
especially when all the “criticisms” boiled down to calling her irrational and crazy - classic sexist presumptions lobbed at women - and then upon further analysis realising she made measured and nuanced decisions

meatball77 Apr 3, 2026 +5
Voyager has really great episodes. As a whole it was fairly mid, but it has some of the best episodes (and best comedic episodes) of Trek.
5
oldscotch Apr 3, 2026 +4
I rewatched it a few years back and it holds up better than I expected. All the Maquis stuff probably could have been executed better, and holy f*** Neelix is annoying, but overall I liked it more than now than when it aired. I'm still holding out for it and DS9 to get a, well shit it was shot on film - do a 4k remaster. I know it cost them a fortune to undo the special effects in TNG, but that sounds like a good use for AI.
4
WySLatestWit Apr 3, 2026 +1
I really, really want to do a re-watch of DS9 because it has been almost literally 20 years since I watched the entire thing, but every time I try it just looks so bad...
1
oldscotch Apr 3, 2026 +1
The best version available is the freaking laserdisc. There's no reason the DVD and streaming versions can't be at least as good as that.
1
Octogenarian Apr 2, 2026 +13
Yeah Voyager was “good”.  It wasn’t great, but it was good.   The only character I really liked was The Doctor but even that character I don’t think was handled well.  They were trying to go with a Commander Data vibe but it didn’t make sense.  He’s literally a standard issue piece of software.   Given that they left him running for so long it would have been cool if he became more eccentric, not more human.  Make copies of himself to marionette around the sickbay, use invisible force fields to move objects around the sickbay (because all he is is light and force fields), start teleporting around because there’s no need for him to walk.   All I’m saying is I wished they played more with the idea of a computer program who’s had the keys to his cage handed to him.   Janeway was fine, but that’s about it.   Chakotay had the charisma of a long nap.  Kes and Neelix was f****** weird.  They had zero chemistry and it was awkward as f***.   Harry and Tom were nice.   B’Lanna and Tom, again, was weird.  Zero chemistry and not believable.   Seven was well written and interesting but an obvious act of desperation.  The sheer volume of Borg stories became a chore.
13
WySLatestWit Apr 2, 2026 +19
From what I remember - admitting it's been a really long time since I watched - The Doctor wasn't really a great character...he was more of an excellent performance that vastly elevated the material. But like I said I need to give the show a re-watch, I might not be being fair.
19
AnAge_OldProb Apr 3, 2026 +10
he and Kate mulgrew were the only ones not phoning it in after about season 4.
10
Caelinus Apr 3, 2026 +6
Kate Mulgrew did such a good job throughout.
6
WySLatestWit Apr 3, 2026 +3
By that point the show was dropping dramatically in the ratings. Season 3 sat around 4 - 6 million viewers per episode, by season 4 they dropped down into the 3 million total viewers and the show just sort of fizzled thereafter. If I remember it's ratings were often even weaker than DS9's ratings had been. I wouldn't doubt if everybody kind of knew after season 4 that Voyager wasn't making that TNG leap to the movies and were just waiting for the run to come to an end.

Voyager show definitely starts dropping off. I watched every episode of TNG with my mom as it came out. She was a huge Trekkie, had the dolls from the original TOS run and all that stuff. We were super excited for Voyager. We made an event out of the premier and ordered pizza. By halfway through season 4 she'd totally lost interest in the show.
1
Virtual-Nose7777 Apr 3, 2026 -2
Oh god, Kate Mulgrew was so overacting on the show. I couldn't watch it because of her. Interesting how our experience is on either end of the spectrum.
-2
Octogenarian Apr 2, 2026 +5
Yeah I think I liked the concept of the character and not the execution.  :)
5
oldscotch Apr 3, 2026 +1
He and Seven both felt overused towards the end.
1
WySLatestWit Apr 3, 2026 +8
Jeri Ryan made real chicken salad out of chicken shit. she was brought in deliberately to be the s*** girl on the show because the ratings were tanking. She just happened to be a really good actor who turned the role into something that actually had some depth to it just with her performance. She's genuinely great in Picard Season 3.
8
oldscotch Apr 3, 2026 +2
Yeah she did a great job and Seven did make the series better. But still you could definitely tell they were leaning on her (and her heels) a bit overmuch.
2
WySLatestWit Apr 3, 2026 +2
Yeah. Apparently they had her in a corset in order to get her looking even thinner in her skintight suit, and it was so tight at one point she passed out from being unable to breathe. Still. Seven was ultimately a good character, and she wasn't have as egregious as the Vulcan on Enterprise.
2
jaredearle Apr 3, 2026 +1
Plus, that whole Obama presidency she made happen. Don’t forget that contribution to world history.
1
NeuHundred Apr 3, 2026 +1
I think part of that is because the characters are more suited for experimentation. The Doctor is always adding to his program and trying things, and he can always undo it when it goes wrong, and Seven is constantly trying to adjust to different situations. The other characters by that point are more or less locked in.
1
Lespaul42 Apr 2, 2026 +4
Imo The Doctor and Seven were great Star Trek characters, Tuvok was really good, Janeway was okay and everyone else is forgettable. The ratio is definitely on the low end for the franchise but the Doc and Seven are probably in the top 10 overall so not bad.
4
skiabay Apr 3, 2026 +5
I think Janeway is great. I wouldn't rate her as high as Picard or Sisko, but those are two of my favorite characters of all time.
5
bboynexus Apr 3, 2026 +2
"Everyone else" is a disservice to Torres, who was superlative.

rupturefunk Apr 2, 2026 +2
My issue with Doctor and Seven is both are kind of a respin of Data, who was himself kind of a respin of Spock.
2
PeopleCallMeSimon Apr 3, 2026 +2
Janeway was mostly great imo. There were some episodes that wasnt great, while Picard in TNG was just spot on awesome every single episode. Kes is probably the character i dislike the most in Voyager, dont know why. Just felt like a bad performance and she kept being power crept in how incredible the Okampa powers are. Tom was really great for the holodeck-type-stories that Data, LaForge and Barclay would have on TNG.
2
JohnCavil01 Apr 3, 2026 +2
But the point of the Doctor is explore how evidently human he already is to the point that he is *more* human than many of the actual biological humans. He’s testy, sarcastic, short-tempered, vain, empathetic, boisterous, eager, curious, artistic all in abundance. His eccentricities manifest in ways that they would in a human not in a program. And even then there are neat hologram-specific ways that he explore his humanity like when he developed the Emergency Command Hologram modification in Tinker, Tailor, Doctor, Spy - an all-timer for the show imo.
2
Speed-Boat-Dope-666 Apr 3, 2026 +1
I would argue that the Doctor DOES become more eccentric - it’s just that this goes hand in hand with him becoming more human, and embracing human foibles and eccentricities.
1
hamlet9000 Apr 3, 2026 +1
> Janeway was fine, but that’s about it. Kate Mulgrew is great, but she's saddled with terrible scripts. She became the figurehead for the nadir of the Prime Directive in *Trek*, was repeatedly depicted as an anti-AI bigot, and was almost always stuck being the Gilligan's Island ex machina for why the crew wasn't allowed to go home. It's really a testament to Mulgrew that Janeway remains in any way a compelling, interesting, or even tolerable character.
1
defiancy Apr 3, 2026 +2
Voyager is weird because there are so many just really bad episodes but generally all the two parters and the season finales/premiers are all really good Trek up with the best. Also I really like Captain Janeway, and Ricardo as the Dr is just on another level in some episodes with how good he is.
2
crookedframe13 Apr 3, 2026 +2
I think I'm super easy to please. I liked all fhe Star Treks from around this era TNG to even Enterprise. DS9 was my favorite though. For me the first two seasons for all those series were probably their worst in my opinion. I've always thought they all took until about season 3 to really come into their own. Voyager a bit moreso than TNG and DS9. AND Enterprise way moreso than the previous three. I have not cared much for the Abrams LENS FLARE Trek nor this current run.
2
im-a-doctor-too Apr 3, 2026 +1
Its a very weird series. I enjoyed it. It doesn’t have the “i know what I am” that DS9 and TNG do
1
captainhaddock Apr 3, 2026 +1
I had a lot of fun rewatching Voyager this past year and then listening to the commentary and review of each episode on the Mission Log podcast.

Watching old Trek and these guys talk about Trek makes me really disappointed in what we've been subjected to from Trek over the last decade.
13
boyyouguysaredumb Apr 2, 2026 +12
To me Star Trek Voyager is one of, if not the best series in the franchise. The wandering through an unknown quadrant with no backup and no idea about the local systems just works so well. There’s also obviously an overall goal: to get home. All those things make the stakes higher and I loved it
12
Slaphappydap Apr 3, 2026 +23
> The wandering through an unknown quadrant with no backup and no idea about the local systems just works so well. There’s also obviously an overall goal: to get home. All those things make the stakes higher and I loved it I would call that a strong premise, but the actual execution was... rough. Some Voyager episodes are among the best Trek episodes, but there are so, so many bad ones. Very uneven show, suffered from a lot of bad writing.
23
AnAge_OldProb Apr 3, 2026 +6
And questionable acting especially in the later seasons, a number of the cast (cough Robert Beltran cough) were clearly phoning it in after the season 3/4.
6
oldscotch Apr 3, 2026 +6
In fairness they hardly gave him anything to work with. He had to be frustrated as hell, going in there thinking it'll be the next Riker, and instead his character is almost ignored.
6
bboynexus Apr 3, 2026 +2
I don't think it's quite as uneven as people suggest. Seasons 4-7 in particular are extremely consistent.
2
hamlet9000 Apr 3, 2026 +2
The decision to do the Year of Hell as a two-parter that gets retconned out of existence perfectly captures Voyager's failures as a series.
2
readwrite_blue Apr 3, 2026 +2
The issue is that Voyager has the highest ratio of filler episodes and often the consistently worst writing. Its highs are awesome and there's a lot to love, but it has more mediocre episodes than any other series in the franchise.

Nah Harry and Tom were the best duo on Voyager and that episode where he was duplicated and died was great.
2
im-a-doctor-too Apr 3, 2026 +2
The best premise for sure, it was the first trek I was old enough to understand when it was on. Some of the most memorable episodes. I particularly remember the Durst face swap episode scaring the shit out of me.
2
ExistingTheDream Apr 2, 2026 -1
I am glad people like you who love it got to enjoy it. I like to think that every creation can find its audience. That said, Voyager ranks somewhere around #6 or #7 for me in Star Trek series. 1. DS9 2. TNG 3. STNW (but could be losing ground because of last season) 4. TOS 5. Enterprise (that opening theme is last place, however) 6. Picard (even the last season needed some better direction) 7. Voyager 8. Discovery (liked first 2 seasons then OMG preachiness from the wisdom of pre-teens may make it the worst) 9. Lower Decks (sorry, I know people love it, but it doesn't really grab me.) 10. TAS - I can't watch them at this point and never watched more than like 4 of them 11. Prodigy - I watched it, but Star Trek for children isn't my thing. 12. I am not watching that Academy thing. It looks worse than Discovery's last two seasons and might be related to the "Minds that brought you Section 31."

JohnCavil01 Apr 3, 2026 +2
Man to each his own but I don’t see how anyone could rank *any* post-2005 Star Trek above anything prior but least of all Picard. That’s the only media I’ve ever felt like was specifically designed to spite me as a human being. Like Alex Kurtzman just specifically hated me for some reason and wanted to defile something I loved for the sheer sniveling cruelty of it. That show should honestly be brought before The Hague.

2/10ths the length of start fleet academy season 1 and it will likely have more views than that entire show by tomorrow.

PatchedConic Apr 3, 2026 +3
I have a soft spot in my heart for Voyager. Not because it was great, but because it was THE Star Trek show of my childhood. Although DS9 would eventually become my favorite of all the Trek shows, it was just a little too early for me to be aware of. But I made sure the VCR was set to record every episode of Voyager. I've limited my rewatching of Voyager so as not to ruin my childhood memories but that nostalgia definitely helps carry the show for me.
3
Dave_Matthews_Jam Apr 2, 2026 +6
Wish they'd do a series on the original 60s Trek
6
MarthePryde Apr 3, 2026 +2
I'm glad they keep making these videos. Watching people talk about old Trek is as close as I'll get to old Trek in the modern era, short of simply rewatching it all for the umpteenth time.
2
rupturefunk Apr 2, 2026 +5
Was hoping they were sticking with ds9 for a few more seasons! I never clicked with voyager, the initial concept is super interesting but it turns into bland TNG clone very quickly.
5
EagleForty Apr 2, 2026 +5
Voyager was a really good Star Trek series, but rarely delivered on their premise. Much of the time, it just felt like TNG. Which is still good, but not what the show promised.
5
StarWarsMonopoly Apr 3, 2026 +2
They always f****** do that. I love RLM, but they seem to be allergic to releasing the later episodes of multi-part videos in a timely fashion, and most of the time they will put out like 5 more videos before they get back to whatever series/movie/director they were talking about like 3 months ago
