Regarding children of immigrants who moved back to their parents’ home countries

Posted by Procedure_Awkward

Pretty self explanatory, are any of you children of immigrants moved to your parents home countries? Why did you make that decision and how does your family feel about it? This is probably not a very common experience, but I always wonder how different life would be in my home country.

Ive been back. Fantastic experience. But the grass is NOT always greener and after a few years I came back. Im a glutton for punishment so I did this twice just to really make sure! All its done is left me with the grief you feel from having two places to call home.

My Grandmother left England to come to America for a better life. She had 13 siblings and only two didn't immigrate to the States. I remember talking to my mom about it when I was 15. I showed an interest in England because I thought they had pretty houses. My mom asked me why I romanticised England when grandma never did at all. My grandma died 5 years before I was born. She apparently would never say anything kind about that country and would curse it a lot. Moved to the UK when I was 27 and have lived here for 10 years. Have never been back to the US. I feel a lot safer here than the US. Women get paid maternity leave, I get 27 days paid vacation + bank holidays + two weeks paid at Christmas, healthcare is universal so I'm not paying for A&E trips, my husband's student loans are forgiven after X amount of time if they aren't paid off, I don't have to drive because public transport is reliable and everywhere, etc. eetc. The grass is 100% greener over here. I didn't realise how bad America was until I actually lived abroad. America is so backwards and old school on a lot of things.
