And the Steel Dossier. And the Mueller Report. And dozens of other things. It turns out justice is swift for normies, but so slow as to never move at all for our criminal overlords.

It doesn't help with AG Pan Bondi was the state AG that made a deal with Epstein in the past.
57
RXDriv3r 5 days ago +42
She wasn't the Florida AG during Epstein's sweetheart deal. She was a state prosecuter. Didn't become FL AG until 2009, after the Epstein deal which was given to him by then US Attorney to South Florida, Alexander Acosta, the same Alexander Acosta who became Labor secretary during Trump's first term, who resigned when Epstein was arrested again in 2019. This isn't a defense for Bondi. She *was* the state AG when rejecting to investigate Trump's fraud allegations dealing with his Trump University after Trump gave her $25,000. Trump was fined for this by the IRS, as it was deemed an illegal donation by Trump.

There is an argument to be made that the type of person who gets rich requires a certain level of ruthlessness which tends to be found in those exhibiting predatory behaviors. TL, DR: All rich people are assholes
170

Also possible that it's the other way around; they get rich, they start feeling powerful, people stop telling them no and they start pushing boundaries

It takes a certain type of dominant personality to even want to be a national level politician. Most people would just never want that job. Becoming rich also takes a certain lack of empathy that most people don't have.

There was actual bipartisan support to expel *both* of them so the basically saw the writing on the wall.

Gonzales should have been out months ago. He was only told to quit because the GOP won the special election in Georgia last week, ensuring their house majority up to November. And as a bonus, a dem is out too, which tarnishes their party's reputation far more than Gonzales does for the GOP. There was no *real* bipartisan support for this, it's only an act. I'd bet both my kidneys that if Gonzales was needed to maintain a house majority, he wouldn't be resigning.

14
BeeBobber546 5 days ago +72
He waited until Swalwell resigned to “break even” with the Dem and Republican resignations so the razor thin Republican majority stayed in place. Which is of course absolutley disgusting Republicans and Mike Johnson care more about political power than morality or Christian values.
72
Venetian_Harlequin 5 days ago +17

It’s sort of like modern medicine. Dems cut out the infection, republicans let it fester. At this point they’re like 80% toxic. I don’t know how many republicans would have been viable candidates in the 1980s (their version of the holy land), but I don’t think many would have been very successful.
771
zephyrtr 5 days ago +267
It's the same thing we saw in the Catholic Church. If you don't expose rule breaking, suddenly everyone is covering for everyone else's lies -- no matter how heinous. A secret consensual relationship between a priest and a nun became mutually assured destruction to protect a child molester.
267
mfGLOVE 5 days ago +67
And to relate the three (politics, science, religion) - It’s why we hear, “My child doesn’t need the vaccine, their life is in Gods hands now,” as they lay dying in the hospital on life support. These people are willing to sacrifice their lives and the lives of their family for their god and their lies.

In the 80s a viable candidate Gary Hart was stopped from running because an adult woman sat on his lap on a boat,he was married. Now we have a convicted (civilly) rapist, convicted felon as president what the hell happened in 40 years. Must be all those cuts to education.
34
Free_Dome_Lover 5 days ago +55
The clowns in the Republican party now would've been chewed up and spit out by 80s era Republicans. They were still people I disagree with but their morals were devoted to whatever ethics they had (even if those morals and ethics are repulsive). They weren't just jesters in the kings court and could actually argue a point. Johnson wouldve been run out and exposed as a closet homo so goddamn fast.

It feels like a lifetime ago but I agonized over voting for Obama over McCain. McCain had some great policy wins like the McCain Feingold act and often voted against party lines. Palin pushed me over the edge. And in 2012 I had *many* conversations about how Obama was a good president but I wouldn’t be upset if Romney won. 2016 was such a hard f****** pivot.
59
elconquistador1985 5 days ago +22
I voted for McCain over Obama and then Obama over Romney. Between those votes, I realized that the Republican party platform of "fiscal responsibility" was a lie and that their social policy was basically just to be as cruel as possible. McCain and Romney were both reasonable people with policy positions they could articulate and defend. Around that time, the tea party really started taking hold of things, though. That's proto maga. 2016 wasn't really a pivot. It was the party control being completely handed over to the nutcases.
22
cantadmittoposting 5 days ago +37
ehhhh the *biggest* problem with Romney was that he was still in a post-teaparty GOP, and even though he tried to represent some sort of traditional politician vibe, he was sitting on top of a party that was clearly becoming more and more extreme and bloodthirsty. Voting for Romney was, IMO, and in all fairness far less obviously, still a surrender to the republican slide into what they are now. Maybe not Romney himself *directly,* but that he allowed the party its trajectory into the abyss in the undercard elections, so voting for him represented an acceptance of that collapse.
37
remotectrl 5 days ago +25
The party did a "post-mortem" report about how and why they lost that election. One of the takeaways was that they should try to expand the party to include more Latino voters. Instead, Steve Bannon via Trump managed to appeal to the worse white voters by playing into their grievances about everything (but mostly bigotry) and the media ate it up as "economic anxiety" and the party completely transformed into its current fascist incarnation.
25
THE_CHOPPA 5 days ago +9
What’s interesting is they actually did get more Latino voters.
9
PoopyButt28000 5 days ago +14
It's interesting seeing all the white washing of past Republicans. John McCain aligned with Donald Trump on 91% of Senate Votes.
14
ac9116 5 days ago +5
Maybe it’s just the degradation of the GOP, but McCain in 2008 was not the McCain of 2016. His reputation at that point was a moderate that caused headaches for GOP votes. I don’t want to white wash him but I’m also not going to take my 2016 knowledge of him and erase how he was viewed in 2008.
5
scarylarry2150 5 days ago +54
> 2016 was such a hard f****** pivot. I was someone who didn't vote for Obama in either election, but I also thought he was a fine president and genuinely good person, and to be honest the level of rightwing rhetoric against him was enough for me to take a step back and ask myself "...am I actually rooting for the bad guys here?" I remember in early 2016 I was genuinely excited about the future of the republican party. I liked Jeb Bush, I liked Marco Rubio, I liked Chris Christie, I loved John Kasich. There were also plenty of second-tier players like Mike Huckabee and Rand Paul and Ben Carson and Bobby Jindal who I didn't necessarily think would be good as president, but I still thought were relatively rational and intelligent and generally represented what I wanted to see in government. But then all of those candidates got kicked to the curb in favor of someone who's not small-government, not pro-constitution, not free-market capitalism, not family-values, not... any traditionally conservative values whatsoever. The current Republican party platform consists solely of the unconditional worship of a single all-powerful president who should be able to do anything he wants with no checks on his power... which is literally the polar opposite of the one central value the founding fathers build the country around. Absolutely wild how quickly things changed in just a decade, and at this point it's hard for me to imagine ever voting for the Republican party ever again in my lifetime. I'll take flawed policy implemented in good faith over bad policy implemented in bad faith 100 times out of 100, and it's outright embarrassing seeing my "conservative" friends and family members who have suddenly done a complete flip on their stances in order to keep rooting for their "team"
54

It was longer than a decade. The seeds were planted during the Reagan presidency, and nurtured by the Federalist Society until we reached the current hell.
7
urgent45 5 days ago +20
That's one of many things I don't get. Trump's "policies" or whatever you want to call them are so far from the established Republican platform as to be unrecognizable. Can't they see that? And they still call themselves Republican? What the hell is going on?
20
mrpersson 5 days ago +33
I don't know, people in here are talking like the Republican party has been reasonable at any point in the last 40 years. Only thing they really did was put on a public persona. If you listened to any conservative talk radio, Trump represents EXACTLY what they've wanted. It's ALWAYS been about bigotry and getting back their White Republic. There's a reason he started his campaign in 2015 saying all Mexicans are rapists and his slogan was MAGA because that was the sentiment of the bigoted radio airwaves.
33
fadesteppin 5 days ago +19
Yeahhh, 2008 was the first election I was old enough to vote in, and despite having 2 republican parents at the time, I remember very well why *I* have never voted Republican. They have never stood for acceptance and decency, and my whole adult life they have done nothing but rally against people they don't like, which are minorities. They have always put Jesus and Christianity at the forefront of their platforms and implied that only god fearing Christians are good people and everyone else was a test of their faith so, being bigoted toward everyone else was righteous and morally good. The Republican party now is just the Republican party of old, they just say the quiet part out loud now bc they have been given carte blanche to do so.
19
mrpersson 5 days ago +7
Yep, I know the feeling. I think the average person doesn't understand just how disgusting conservative politics are. They could be the sweetest person on Earth but if you get them talking about "those people" you see a much more vile side to their personality.

27
PM_ME_SCALIE_ART 5 days ago +43
Yes. He hit 5 years in January this year. Resigning retains the pension. Even expelled members retain their pension if they've served 5 years and their expulsion is not due to criminal felony conviction. After Santos, a proposal was put forward to rescind pensions for expelled reps/senators but it did not pass. Like the pedo retirement home of Congress would ever pass anything against themselves and for morality and the people lol

211
DenimCryptid 5 days ago +10
"Staying silent" implies that women are turning a blind eye to it willingly. While it's entirely possible that there are female enablers of sexual violence against other women, it's more likely that the silence is being maintained by threats and leveraging power against victims. It's especially more likely under this administration that protects other sexual predators (as long as they offer unwavering support of the current president) and has made progress in removing protections for whistleblowers. I know I'm being a little nitpicky and I apologize for that. I just think it's important to say that people are "being kept silent" to at least give people benefit of the doubt that they would speak up if they weren't afraid of the retaliation that could potentially end their careers and ruin their lives.

He had a good gig as a pretty high profile house rep, in a district he would never lose, and no one was paying enough attention to him for everything to come out. Why join a super high profile and contentious governor's race?

Maybe just straight up thought it wouldn't come out since it hadn't already. I doubt he thought no one was paying attention or that he wasn't high profile enough, so probably assumed he had his shit locked down and that is why it didn't come out.

He may also know enough other people in Congress who behave exactly like himself that he assumed he'd never be singled out for a takedown, but failed to realize that dems needed to thin out the CA gov race herd asap by any means so they have little reason to protect him

Right, like I thought I had to too much dirt to run for politics because of a stupid interview I did when I was younger, but I've never assaulted, raped, murdered, or committed treason. I'd be a saint by comparison.

I’d 100% guess modern spy agencies have a bonkers amount of intimate details of their targets and some crazy algorithms of their own.   It’s probably never been easier than it is right now to serve up the right bait at just the right time.

And with how many technologically illiterate people there are in Congress, I can’t imagine it’s hard to hack into email or whatever else. Just wait til they fall asleep, go to their home office, find the sticky note with the passwords written on it, call it a day.

He might have done all of what he's being currently accused of, but there's no evidence he slept with the Chinese spy per the FBI (From back then). There *was* actually evidence that two other *Midwestern* politicians *did* sleep with her.  There's a very detailed Axios article about it, use ublock to get innif it's paywalled. https://www.axios.com/2020/12/08/china-spy-california-politicians

Swalwell, you suck. I believed in you. You’re a disgrace. Hopefully, smart lobbying firms and nonprofits will stay away from you. This is such a good argument for Congressional term limits. They’re paid too much. They’re pampered like queens. They have (obviously) unwarranted power over their staffs. They hit on assistants and pages and volunteers. They hang onto these jobs until they’re completely senile. They do inside trading. They announce they’re not running for reelection an hour before filing closes, so they can handpick their successor (often a relative). They’re bought and sold by lobbyists and PACs. Term limits: 8 years max in the House of Representatives, lifetime. 12 years max in the Senate. Then go away, thank you for your service. Go away.

fe-and-wine 5 days ago +12
He was a Republican very early on in his life, not sure how it lines up with his actual time in politics but last I looked into it he flipped to being a Democrat around like 23 years old. Which IMO is a pretty normal time for millions of college kids across America to change parties after having their instilled beliefs challenged throughout their early adult years. Kind of a nothingburger purity test, IMO. By this metric I'd be considered "originally a Republican" because I was raised in the deep south with conservative beliefs until I turned 18 and went to college, after which I voted Democrat in every election for which I've been eligible. Call me too woke but purity testing people for beliefs they held before their frontal lobe was even fully developed is lame.

Mrs Frazzled on Insta has been posting a lot about this. Apparently she did an interview with him in November, and afterwards got tons of messages from women saying not to trust him, don’t be in a room alone, etc. It was so overwhelming that she publicly started calling him out, and got a huge response from other women who were harassed by him.

NoDaddyNotTheBelt25 5 days ago +62
He had a fling with a woman several years ago that ended up being a Chinese spy. He was investigated over it and cleared in terms of being complicit traitor yet was still exposed as a poon hound. Apparently there had been a longstanding directive at Congress to not leave younger staffers near him or Matt Gaetz because of how equally slimy both are.

Swallowell, is a world class shit bag, who ran for president btw. Also glad to Gonzales exit too..Corey Mills should be next! See, I can do both sides. IF we did this correctly, dozens would be forced out, but we’d rather pay off their misdeeds with tax payer money!
