I'm genuinely surprised this person is still missing. Not being captured or rescued by now feels insane.

tampapat54 6 days ago +3021
I doubt they would give an update on the status of the missing pilot during an active SAR, but at this point he may have been KIA and they’re searching for a body
3021
Loose_Profession_918 6 days ago +1466
I read he signaled in so he's not KIA. If Iran got him they'd surely be talking about it and displaying the body.

MaMerde 6 days ago +2123
Iran could have him and not publicize it. It would keep the CSAR team on the ground and occupied. Iran might choose to engage team. The CSAR team isn’t big enough to invade and killing some of them is another black eye for the US. They can always publicize the capture later. IDK. Just a thought. I don’t know shit.

The_Love_Pudding 6 days ago +797
This is absolutely what they would do. Low flying aircraft and search teams are like small fish in a large barrel over there. Eventually you're going to catch at least one or two.

I saw a video of a tanker fueling two apaches or blackhawks , in broad daylight at a super low level...couple of manpads and 3 aircraft would be down
339
alienXcow 6 days ago +205
There were videos of manpads being fired at the CSAR package that seemed to be defeated. That's what all the extra draggy bits on those helos and hercs are for. LAIRCM, flares, and missile warning systems all help you work in an environment like that.

CSAR - combat search and rescue group from the air force. That's an HC-130J, a C-130 variant for CSAR operations outfitted with the ability to refuel to extend the helicopters' flight time. Not as familiar with helicopters but likely 2 HH-60 Pave Hawks, modified Black Hawks. It's riskier to fly in daytime, it's more common for them to fly at night really low and with no lights/radio, just NVG (night vision). But they definitely have fighter support overhead keeping on site while they're doing this. The group is carrying PJs - pararescue special forces, the guys who get people and equipment from behind enemy lines. They're h******* guys they have a higher washout rate than SEALs and they're all certified paramedics. The idea is either the helicopters land and secure the pilot if there's a good landing site. Otherwise they parachute in, including 3 PJs in the C-130, move to the pilot and secure an extraction elsewhere. When they came to my AFROTC career day they were badass. They showed off their dirt bikes and ATVs, that's the kind of stuff they'll airdrop in with to get in and out fast.

> These Things We Do, That Others May Live That’s the motto of Pararescue, a highly trained specialized group of absolute professionals. They train to do exactly this, go behind enemy lines to retrieve downed pilots. They know the risks better than any of us.

I imagine they know how the Orange Draft Skipper would react. Iran: we have one American soldier. Give us reparations. Trump: just one? Please. It’s his fault he got captured. We don’t need losers like him anyway. Hegseth: HE GOT CAUGHT. HOW DUMB DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO GET CAUGHT. President Trump would never get caught like that. He’s the best at maneuvering. I’ve seen it first hand. He flies like a gazelle.
66
Barnezhilton 6 days ago +42
This makes the most sense. Isreal said they halted attacks for the search and rescue missions. Prolonged halting helps Iran.
42

No benefit in Iran showing their cards or caskets early. Read enough Tom Clancy books to know that. Also lures in search and rescue for more target practice. Yehawww

Brandon_Me 6 days ago +26
Well they can say they found him, but if they don't it's safe to assume missing or captured.
26
DazzlingResource561 6 days ago +453
Some possible scenarios 1. Iran guard has captured them, but US military doesn’t know this yet and Iran is using this captured pilot to bait US into sending more service people into conflict zone in hopes of downing and capturing more US military personnel. 2. Pilot is hiding and evading. 3. Iranian not friendly to government is harboring and protecting pilot. 4. US Military does know fate and is working to safely extract.
453

1b. Iran captured the pilot. The US knows but refuses to report it because, you know, the current administration.

54
neora_55 6 days ago +97
What kind of motivation would lead an Iranian to harbor an American fighter jet pilot? Do you think anti-regime people are okay with being bombed?
97

Anti-regine does not mean pro-American. Iran regime is killing students, while Americans are bombing schools.
58
AdmirableJudgment784 6 days ago +16

Brandon_Me 6 days ago +59
Wouldn't they have found the body? Iran would likely have at the very least. And I thought that they made contact with the US's after the plane went down, but maybe I misread that.
59
Wafkak 6 days ago +24
Its not that densely populated of an area. Often its just luck when they are found quickly. A search could easily take months without enemy fire. Especially if they are alive and paranoid of Iranians pretending to be American.
24
Brandon_Me 6 days ago +33
Irans landscape doesn't give him a lot of fresh water sources for months of hiding.

Evanescent_contrail 6 days ago +99
Iran has every motivation to keep the US searching. Unlike the US top brass, they maintain opsec.
99
TerryFromFubar 6 days ago +37
People are really looking past the bait aspect. Not finding the pilot or their body is a humiliation for America and a demoralizer for their troops, but say Iran found the pilot or their body and didn't say anything for a couple days, then America will just keep pouring sitting duck targets into the area on borderline suicidal missions.
37

And decently accurate! I read recently that the political fallout of The Battle of Mogadishu put an end to "boots on the ground" operations in Africa. 8 months after this, the Rwandan genocide happened that killed 800,000 people in 10 days. The UN wanted to get involved but the US blocked it because they were so worried about the potential political fallout of another failed military attempt.

"The number of casualties sustained by the Taliban fighters has also been disputed. [Naval Special Warfare Command](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Special_Warfare_Command) has estimated that Luttrell and his teammates killed around thirty-five insurgents during the battle. Andrew MacMannis, a former Marine Colonel who was involved in planning Operation Red Wings and assisted in recovering bodies after the mission, has stated that there were no known enemy casualties. Mohammad Gulab, the Afghan villager who rescued Luttrell, agrees with MacMannis, as does another Marine who was involved with the mission, Patrick Kinser, who has said, "I've been at the location where \[Luttrell\] was ambushed multiple times. I've had Marines wounded there. I've been in enough firefights to know that when shit hits the fan, it's hard to know how many people are shooting at you. \[But\] there weren't 35 enemy fighters in all of the Korengal Valley \[that day\]." Furthermore, Gulab has claimed that he found Luttrell with eleven magazines of ammunition – the full amount that Luttrell had brought on the mission" from Wikipedia Lol
220
Phenomenomix 6 days ago +62
Luttrell’s account should be disregarded as he was off and running as soon as the shooting started. The Navy inflated the numbers of enemy combatants and put the original seal team into a situation they weren’t trained to handle and had already been advised by the Marine’s who had been working in that specific area that their plan was going to get people killed
62

That part in the movie where the Taliban guy is threatening to cut his head off and Mark Wahlberg is like “FUCKIN DO IT THEN!!” Made me roll my eyes into the back of my head. That guy would have shit himself to death if that actually happened (rightfully so as that would be terrifying). I hated how generic and lame that movie was but my roommate at the time fuckin loved it. We saw it in the theatre and he watched it a lot afterwards as well. He couldn’t believe I thought it was just alright.

33
Samiel_Fronsac 6 days ago +22
A Taliban subcommander was interviewed by contractors at a point, according to the Político article, and he said there were 12 total, counting the cameramen, so 10 shooters indeed. That was then. Shit is gonna be so, so much worse with 4k videos of US servicemen vs drones published by the Iranians when the ground invasion gets the green light...
22
roflmaohaxorz 6 days ago +11
In all fairness, I don’t think it was his decision to make. When you watch interviews with Luttrell, he doesn’t glorify the battle and he doesn’t pretend that he’s a hero. He has outright said “I’m a coward, I did the one thing you never do, I dropped my rifle”. I suspect that this is more on the Navy, ultimately they review and approve any military-action books before they’re published. Wouldn’t surprise me if they wrote the book and told him to just play the part

Epic_Brunch 6 days ago +126
I have some sympathy for the US soldiers. For some underprivileged kids, joining the military is really the only way out of poverty depending on where you're from. It's the only realistic way to pay for college (the military will pay for your degree) and earn a livable income.  If this person signed up years ago with Biden in office, it would have been perfectly reasonable that they would have expected to spend their entire career in the army without being dragged into any stupid wars.
126
mojambowhatisthescen 6 days ago +46
I can understand why they join the military. Just like I can understand why poor, orphaned kids from certain parts of the place I’m from joined Taliban or ISIS. But that doesn’t mean I’m particularly sad when either is killed while trying to invade a territory or kill civilians.

He wasn’t one of those guys that constantly fantasized about the military either. I’m not defending the actions of the military because I think they do some really horrible shit but not everyone that joins the military is some bloodthirsty child killer. If anything I think it’s a massive failure on our society that for some people, selling themselves off to the military for a couple years is the only way for them to make it.

I meant it’s a moral failure but you’re absolutely right about it being by design.

He's a career commissioned officer, not some kid who enlisted because he didn't know how else to make a living after high school.

Do you feel the same about underprivileged kids that signed up for al Qaeda or Isis?

> If this person signed up years ago with Biden in office, it would have been perfectly reasonable that they would have expected to spend their entire career in the army without being dragged into any stupid wars. Eh, I wouldn't downplay the Democrats that much. They also love wars, because the capitalist class need wars(as Lenin [explained](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQrXV92V31s)), but the Democats don't just start wars. That's the difference.
31
NiobiumThorn 6 days ago +8
Eh they sure start quiet wars and ""special operations"" but fair point

I understand why one would join the military. I also think they don't deserve any sympathy, though. The fact that they may have a shitty life without military, doesn't mean they can bring chaos and misery to others.

Dude stop. The American military primarily recruits from the middle class. & no it wouldn’t have been perfectly reasonable under Biden unless your memory is 4 years long. This is the 4th war of my life. You guys need to wake up and stop the jingoistic American Mythos c***. It’s not real, never has been. If you don’t know what America and its military does at this point, you’re willfully ignorant. The data actually shows that poor kids actually find other ways to survive more often than not. Most soldiers are just middle class dudes who didn’t want to work hard at a trade or profession & wanted to join a jobs program, get benefits & live off our taxes while being immoral. There’s a reason our SA rates are astronomical for our soldiers

Eh, I have sympathy with grunts. There for college, healthcare, to not cause their parents bankruptcy maybe even. Pilots have far more leverage and education.

If you're a soldier, your entire job is killing people. Thats what they signed up for. They chose to be a murderer for money. They chose to be a soldier. How does poverty justify the slaughter of people in other countries ? Is it because the poor Americans are more important than the lives of people in other countries?

I just read a fantastic long-form article about it from The Guardian that is very much worth a read. It's about how misleading it is to ask if this was Claude or ChatGPT because this is a tech stack a decade in the making and run by Palantir after Google was forced by employees to abandon the contract. It's called **Maven**: https://www.theguardian.com/news/2026/mar/26/ai-got-the-blame-for-the-iran-school-bombing-the-truth-is-far-more-worrying

America said they would take no prisoners and proved it when the sunk the defenseless exhibition ship and left the sailors to die; why would they expect anything different for their own servicemen?

If you don’t want to get lost or captured in a foreign nation, a good trick for this is: Do not sign up for a military that is infamously known for its invasions of West Asian nations.
