Lesbian Space Princess (Fandor) is an animated film from Australia about, well, a lesbian space princess named Saira (Shabana Azeez) of the planet Clitopolis (it's said to be very hard to find). She has serious self-esteem issues, particularly after she is unceremoniously dumped by her super-hot girlfriend Kiki the Destroyer (Bernie Van Tiel).
Then Kiki is kidnapped by the evil Straight White Maleians, and Saira goes to rescue her. Along the way, she hooks up with Willow (Gemma Chua-Tran), who helps her find her self-worth.
There are a lot of ways this film MIGHT have gone. It might have been too hip for anybody over the age of 23. It might have been too preachy, it might have been too self-important or man-hating.
But it's none of those, it's surprisingly funny, and just an unusual treat. There are occasional music interludes that are not great, but I kinda think that was the POINT, the music was supposed to be cheesy. This film couldn't have been made in the US, it would have tried to take itself too seriously, or not seriously enough, and fallen flat.
On a side note, speaking as a closeup magician, Saira is a magician and does a remarkably accurately-animated performance of a routine called The Ambitious Card.
One to see, if you can track it down. It might eventually get released in the US.
I saw this in the theatre when it came out last year! As an older lesbian, some parts felt a bit too "Tumblr queer", but it was a refreshing change from the usual gay trauma stories. Some of the jokes also didn't hit, but there were more that worked than fell flat, and one scene had the whole audience laughing out loud (you know which scene). Saira's self-esteem issues were really well done and hit hard as well. She was an incredible character.
I should watch it again.

That planet name got a genuine laugh out of me - whoever came up with "Clitopolis" deserves some kind of award for commitment to teh bit. Australian animation really doesn't hold back when it comes to this stuff, and it usually works way better than whatever sanitized version would've made it through US studios.

this sounds like such a wild ride, honestly can't wait to check it out. glad to hear it doesn't take itself too seriously; those cheesy music moments could make it even better.
