Review of Lesbian Space Princess (2025)

Lesbian Space Princess (Fandor) is an animated film from Australia about, well, a lesbian space princess named Saira (Shabana Azeez) of the planet Clitopolis (it's said to be very hard to find). She has serious self-esteem issues, particularly after she is unceremoniously dumped by her super-hot girlfriend Kiki the Destroyer (Bernie Van Tiel). Then Kiki is kidnapped by the evil Straight White Maleians, and Saira goes to rescue her. Along the way, she hooks up with Willow (Gemma Chua-Tran), who helps her find her self-worth. There are a lot of ways this film MIGHT have gone. It might have been too hip for anybody over the age of 23. It might have been too preachy, it might have been too self-important or man-hating. But it's none of those, it's surprisingly funny, and just an unusual treat. There are occasional music interludes that are not great, but I kinda think that was the POINT, the music was supposed to be cheesy. This film couldn't have been made in the US, it would have tried to take itself too seriously, or not seriously enough, and fallen flat. On a side note, speaking as a closeup magician, Saira is a magician and does a remarkably accurately-animated performance of a routine called The Ambitious Card. One to see, if you can track it down. It might eventually get released in the US.
