Ukraine’s military is increasingly using robots to replace human soldiers, even in combat assault missions, helping to counter Russia’s manpower advantage.

Imagine war crimes being committed by a little army or robots singing, "Los Locos kick your ass! Los Locos kick your face!  Los Locos kick your balls into outer space!"

Fun fact, the original script was to use humans for computational power, as the machines already achieved fusion.

Which is something they are currently working on since the human brain is about 1 million time more energy efficient than a computer

That's silly. Ask a human to factor 1522605027922533360535618378132637429718068114961380688657908494580122963258952897654000350692006139 and they will think about it for a lifetime, consuming about 320GJ of energy without providing a solution. A modern CPU does this in seconds for pennies. Granted, brains can do some things much more efficiently. Like image recognition. Then again, the film is from 1999 which was Age of Empires 2 ago.

the idea is to network neurons together and execute code on them not use an anatomical brain for computing

I'm not trying to be a doomer or anything, but some of those iterations of the Matrix in the Matrix lore were pretty dope.

Sadly according to The Matrix’s timeline we’ll be the ones dying, aka the Second Renaissance.

Imagine the escalation: - the biggest factory wins - first economic, then military - Musk, Palantir and other tech bros decide "Why not rule the world when you have the factory."
19
Atomlad360 5 days ago +21
It's always been the case - the reason the US was so powerful in WW2 was just the sheer number of factories they had to churn out ships, tanks, planes and guns
21
Drongo17 5 days ago +9
Should be remembered that it wasn't just for themselves either - USA was supplying ludicrous amounts of everything to pretty much all of the Allies. Chuikov drove to Stalingrad in an American jeep!

If the biggest factory wins, China is going to have a field day and it's not even going to be close.

Both the Ukrainian and Russian systems heavily rely on Chinese components. Oof they have the population to mobilise huge number of operators.

Trade Federation droid army incoming. Just in time, considering we have the trade routes being tariffed and blockaded.

I wonder how long it is until we start seeing theater or even squad level EMP devices.

You can shield for that.

Sure you can, but now that just UPs complexity and weight.

Now imagine a 13 years old kid, logging in a new game, selecting his robot character and playing a game of war, killing an entire enemy platoon, amazed by the graphics and realism of the game.

Elegant-Day22801 5 days ago +4
I’m… cautiously optimistic? If the future of war is powers throwing machines rather than young men into the meat grinder each cycle then could that not be a good thing?

TamaDarya 5 days ago +10
An incredibly obvious possibility is the commodification of war. No need to sell "boots on the ground" to the public - more war - more death on the receiving end of the robots. It was already a concern with the proliferation of aerial drones starting two decades ago.

Electrical-Lab-9593 5 days ago +9
yeah i can imagine they will be really expensive but politically c****. If Trump had 100,000 terminator style robots, with air support, they would be on the ground in Iran right now doing all sorts of crazy war crimes.
9
Electrical-Lab-9593 5 days ago +6
also means that they can be used where morality might be a problem, like security for billionaires or leaders mowing down protestors its good in the UAF context to save lives, but overall general purpose robots that can also kill will be nightmare fuel.

stealthlysprockets 5 days ago +6
That would make it easier to go to war. War is not limited to the front lines away from your home. A battle of attrition is about who has the most money to spend. Eventually the losing side will attack where the humans live to gain the upper hand since that’s who’s controlling the bots. Basically robot wars are pointless and hitting civilians will be preferred.
6
Apprehensive-Sir8977 5 days ago +2
Each side will still be trying to break through to human-occupied land, to seize and/or demolish it. The distancing and abstraction of conflict probably won't be healthy for anyone, either.

Every generation has tried to come up with a way to end future war. So far none of it has worked.

Robots kick ass. Russia will lose the war because Russia still uses meat waves like Zhukov in WW2.

An AI swarm of RC UNIMOGs with miniguns. A swarm is probably overkill, six would be enough for most applications.

That looks like a light machine gun and 2 RPG's, maybe an APR as well... Yup, pretty terrifying. I wonder if it has an external speaker to taunt the Russians...

20 years down the line, in a robot-human Cooperation Supreme Court: "Mr. Zelensky, you sent robots into the battlefield because they don't... bleed?"  "..."  "Death sentence it is, then"

> I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.
