david draiman is a d*****. i had backstage passes to ozzfest in 2000. i was standing on the side of the stage and he tried standing in front of my shorter friend. my friend was like 5' 5", draiman was just as little taller. so i, 6' 1" swapped with him. a few minutes later draiman moved in front of my friend again. so i swapped with him again. it happened like 3 more times over the course of whatever bands set it was. real class act

I was working on a sound crew back in the early 2000s and I’ll confirm that he’s a d*****. Some musicians are absolute gems to work with. He was/is not one of them. One of my mentors that I was working with at the time wanted to, and I quote, “stab him in the neck so it doesn’t kill him but he can never sing again, *if you wanna call it that.*”
This guy had worked with so many different huge talents over the years, including Whitney Houston, Queen, just about any classic country artist active in the 70s and 80s, and he said Draiman was on his top five worst list that he’d ever experienced. Dude is a f****** diva. Go make some dog noises, dickhead.

I won tickets to see them from the local radio station with backstage passes/hang out with the band around their 3rd/4th album. Their shtick was getting old for me at the time, but I figured what the hell. Might be a fun night?
My roommate and I get to the venue, head to the box office and meet someone from the radio station.
He looks us over and gets real awkward. “Sorry guys, David isn’t available to meet you.”
It seemed pretty transparent that he meant “if you were young girls instead of two dudes in their 20’s, he’d make the time.”
I said “oh don’t worry about it, I don’t Want to meet him either.”
Radio guy gets a little dickish “well then why are you here?”
“The tickets were free. If I had anything else to do tonight I would have stayed home.”
Walked in, and left halfway through.
F*** those guys.

Iced Earth was one of my favorite bands growing up. I learned that Jon Schaffer (guitarist, lyricist) was a founding member of the Oath Keepers when he was the first person to plead guilty in the Trump insurrection. I don't know where he lost the thread, but him being a part of the far-right domestic terrorist movement was not in any way compatible with what I liked and took from his music and lyrics.
I hadn't followed them since about 2002, after Matt Barlow left the band as singer because I could never stand anyone else they brought in. I don't know if his later lyrics gave any indication of his views that would have sent up red flags for me or not; I still like the music of theirs from Barlow's era, but it's hard to listen to without getting pissed at Jon. Finding that out about him felt like a personal betrayal.
8
Samwise-421 day ago
+3
They put out The Glorious Burden with Owens shortly after, and that was my initial intro to the band, but a lot of the patriotic chest thumping in the lyrics rubbed me the wrong way even back then. I tried giving the Barlow era a try but still kinda felt like Jon's lyrics sucked and left them behind. Finding out he was a Jan 6er and An Oath Keeper just reaffirmed the weird vibe I'd gotten.
3
wfbhp1 day ago
+2
Yeah, Horror Show was the last album I listened to. Liking their music and loving horror movies and literature, I really liked that album. When Glorious Burden came out, I tried to listen to a couple songs but I just can't stand Ripper's voice, so I never even made it through listening to a full song from that album, let alone examining the lyrics. Prior to that, I'd always enjoyed their incorporation of fantasy and horror themes as well as the general theme of being critical of religion and oppressive authority that ran through a lot of his lyrics.
But as it turns out, he was just full of shit, and his bizarre interpretation of ideas like "patriotism" and "freedom" culminated in joining an attempted coup to overturn a legitimate election in favor of the world's biggest grifter and liar. I'd never looked into his personal life before, as I very usually don't with musicians (this post is the first I'm hearing about any of this stuff about Draiman as well). Finding out he was not only in but actually a founding member of one of the anti-government militias I've spent basically my whole life criticizing and railing against as dangerous lunatics was shocking to say the least.
The things I liked in his music were not at all conservative values, and how he could possibly look at Trump and think he was any kind of advocate of freedom and liberty, let alone any other "American" value or general good principle, is so far beyond me it hurts my head. Given he converted to Christianity after Jan 6 and is now all Jesusy, I have to believe he actually changed a lot between when I liked his stuff and now, because otherwise I can't reconcile the themes in his music in the 90s and very early 2000s with what I know about him now. Even if I read him wrong from the start, the things I found for myself in his music were still valuable to me, but as a person, he can absolutely go f*** himself. Even if he had something new out, and even if *somehow* I liked it, I'd never knowingly give him another dime. Frankly, it would have been fine with me if he'd spent the rest of his life in prison. The fact that he was out before the mass traitor-pardon really pissed me off.
I also liked Disturbed a lot since shortly before they released their first album, though I can't say I've really listened to anything new from them since The Lost Children, which would be 2011. It just all started to sound like the same thing so I quit bothering with the new stuff and just left my old favorites in rotation. Seeing this stuff about Draiman kind of makes me glad I didn't keep up with them either.
I also liked a couple Lostprophets songs from their 2003 album but never followed them beyond that or knew anything about the band members, and I didn't hear about their singer until after he was killed in prison. So, another one I'm glad I didn't keep up with. Honestly, it feels like the more I learn about anybody who is behind something creative I like, the worse my life becomes because everybody just sucks.

So this Draiman a****** says he was “open to dialogue? “ Didn’t he threaten to beat up Roger Waters in the original podcast?
When Corgan posed the hypothetical situation of Waters asking to sit down and talk with Draiman, the heavy metal singer retorted, “I’d have to punch him first, but yeah.”
What a lying, racist piece of shit.

15
panicatthepharmacy1 day ago
+6
But Rick *wasn’t* contributing, even Gilmour concedes that point.
PF were in horrible financial shape, and the record company offered a significant bonus if The Wall was released prior to Christmas. When asked to come back from vacation early to speed up the recording process, Rick’s response was “tell Roger to f*** off.”
6
000neg1 day ago
Should have kicked Mason out as well cause what was he contributing song or lyric wise. Between you and me wright was more PF sound with his array of keys and tape loops etc than Roger every will with his shitty bass playing. Dude wasn't even the best bassist in the band

Roger has the right on when it comes to Israeli treatment of Palestine. But he's also known to be a bit of an \*actual\* anti-semite. He's been accused by Dave Gilmour of this. Ok, could be sour grapes from Pink Floyd.
He's also been accused of this by former members of his solo touring band. And legendary producer Bob Ezrin.
Waters also has licked Vladimir Putin's boots, basically saying Ukraine was asking for the Russian invasion.
To me, one accusation does not a truth make. Three accusations...that's harder to ignore.
Waters isn't wrong to be anti-Israel. But it feels like he's anti-Israel because he's an anti-Semite and not because their government is run by a bunch of ghouls hellbent on wiping Palestinians from history.
Also note that this isn't a defense of David Draimon, either. He sucks just as bad.
