Still the best Mercutio in every production or adaption I have ever seen.

“Turn thee, Benvolio, and look upon thy death” while showing a brace of .45s with Mary on the hilt…. Chef’s kiss.

JudiciousF Mar 28, 2026 +43
I always love the way he says “Peace? I hate the word”. This was the first thing I saw him in, then couldn’t believe it was the same guy in all the other movies.

He’ll always be Spider Mike for me

no joke I had my first kiss right at the "A pox on both your houses" line life has gone about as well as youd expect with that kind of decision making ability

Waaaaalt! … every time I see Harold Perrineau
24
Intelligent_Sundae_5 Mar 28, 2026 +6
See, I think of Oz. Just like I do with almost every actor that show introduced me to.
6
Buzzybill Mar 28, 2026 +2
Imagine building an entire ad campaign around Schillinger?
2
Intelligent_Sundae_5 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I know! And he has at least two (he’s the yellow M&M).
1
CherryCherry5 Mar 28, 2026 +10
Definitely the best Mercutio ever. *EVER*. Have you watched From? (TV show) Harold Perrineau stars and it's really good, and season 4 is about to begin in April! (also, he's 62. Sixty-two!!!)

He's a scene stealer, honestly amazing performance

Such an incredible film, I’m old enough to remember the horrified responses when it was first announced. Such a swing and it all works so well

solojones1138 Mar 28, 2026 +80
It made me as a ten year old memorize actual Shakespeare lines. Still love it to this day. What a brilliant film.

Some people had English teachers that showed the controversial Romeo and Juliet with the n*** scene, we got the Leonardo Romeo + Juliet on the rollout tv
13
JimboAltAlt Mar 28, 2026 +25
It’s very impressed with its own audacity in an extremely winning way. It helps that everyone is so committed (and it helps that the source material is inherently so action-packed and fast-paced.)
25
GTOdriver04 Mar 28, 2026 +25
That’s why I love this film: everyone from the cast, crew, set design is 100% committed to the bit and that goes a long way. Credit to Baz for saying “why *shouldnt* Romeo and Juliet be set in modern LA?” It worked because it’s so obvious yet so genius. Also, modern action paired with original words helps us to understand what’s going on and why.
25
hereforthesportsball Mar 28, 2026 -3
How is obvious a word that describes this?
-3
Kind-Armadillo-2340 Mar 28, 2026 +11
My high school English teacher showed it class. I think he was happy to not have to show us the version where 13 year old Olivia Hussey takes off her shirt.
11
sooshiroll13 Mar 28, 2026 +3
I love baz so much
3
lurkingenby Mar 28, 2026 +131
Some of Luhrmann’s best work. Maybe even his best. I love the scene where they see each other through the fish tank at the masquerade and the string music of “Kissing You” plays
131
Burger4Ever Mar 28, 2026 +10
Sooooooo good

AshamedChemistry5281 Mar 29, 2026 +5
My heart belongs to Strictly Ballroom, but Romeo + Juliet showed what he could do with just enough budget to do cool things and not enough to go overboard. Limit the guy! He does cooler things!
5
spamtardeggs Mar 29, 2026 +1
I love the water motif. The fish tank, the faux baptism in the balcony scene, Mercutio playing in the surf, Tybalts death, each represent tidal shifts in the character’s lives.
1
BrianOBlivion1 Mar 28, 2026 +124
We watched this in my high school English class, and the class went wild watching it. Plus the Black and Hispanic kids I could tell they absolutely loved seeing their cultures portrayed on screen, from John Leguizamo playing a vain and flashy Cholo version of Tybault to the gospel cover of Prince's "When the Doves Cry," although a number of them only knew the Ginuwine cover.
124
katikaboom Mar 28, 2026 +24
They still watch it, my freshman just finished the R&J paly and they're watching the Leo version to end the unit
24
-titi- Mar 28, 2026 +6
I love this
6

I was in school the year it was released So we got the one with 15yo Olivia Hussey tiddies & a disclaimer before the scene about different times in our hs lit class

KingSpork Mar 28, 2026 +63
Saw this in the theater and loved it ever since. Was my entry point to appreciating Shakespeare as I’m sure it was for a lot of people my age. Really special film and a true product of its time (in a good way).
63
JimboAltAlt Mar 28, 2026 +14
It definitely helped kid me understand the intersection of modern (cool) storytelling and old (classic) storytelling. It’s very on the nose and intentional about doing that, obviously, but for twelve-year-old me it was revelatory in a “good stories are good stories for a reason” kind of way.
14
CandidateExotic9771 Mar 28, 2026 +102
Great film and great soundtrack. They killed it with this one.
102
FalstaffsGhost Mar 28, 2026 +69

#1 Crush Love that song and the rest of the soundtrack!

Christ, I’d completely forgotten about Talk Show Host by Radio Head. Such a good song.
28
meggan_u Mar 28, 2026 +5
Sooooooo good. Moody and perfect

Isn’t Exit Music on this one too?! Any director who uses Radiohead is a w*****
3

I did not like Radio head for years but this one changed my mind.

“A pretty piece of flesh I am” is still stuck in my head from the gas station scene to this day.

I bought the soundtrack before I saw the movie, so good.

I still listen to it sometimes! So good!

Burger4Ever Mar 28, 2026 +36
As a literature teacher, I have the absolute pleasure and joy introducing this to students each year. They never know what to think at first, some of it is corny, other parts mesmerizing, at the end they all really enjoy it — it’s an experience for sure 🧡
36
Ausles Mar 28, 2026 +2
As a person who hated English/literature in school, I appreciate teachers like you for doing stuff like this. When my high school lit teacher played us this movie and a few others through the years, it was one of the few times I actually understood what was going on with everything together, from the intended lesson to what I should be imagining what was going on
2
Connbonnjovi Mar 29, 2026 +1
Were you my teacher?? I was just thinking about what a great experience it was having my teacher show me this movie
1
MachineGunTeacher Mar 28, 2026 +1
I show sections of it to my high school students and they think it's stupid as hell. They actually enjoy the Zefferelli version. Other than girls thinking young DiCaprio is hot, they find the whole experience to be Luhrmann trying to be edgy.
1
a_rabid_buffalo Mar 28, 2026 -7
As someone who was once a student forced to watch it can say I absolutely hated it.
-7
tjgmarantz Mar 28, 2026 +10
I bite my thumb sir!
10
Burger4Ever Mar 29, 2026 +3
lol but you remember it and you can now participate in on this cultural discussion 🤣
3
OEAXTAIL_SOUP Mar 28, 2026 +44
We had to get a permission slip to watch it in high school because there’s t***. One of the few days we had perfect attendance. Literally writing “sword” on the gun was also a nice touch lol
44
Prudent-Pressure2146 Mar 28, 2026 +23
I’ve seen this film a million times and do not remember t*** lol
23
Dial_888 Mar 28, 2026 +5
Same. I remember Jamie Kennedy licking his own nipple if that's what they mean.
5
Prudent-Pressure2146 Mar 28, 2026
Yeah the op is right that the certificate isn’t for kids, I just don’t remember the b**** aspect

Juliet's mom has a brief nip slip but blink It and you miss it.

There aren’t. There’s nudity in the 1968 version.
2
No-Philosopher3248 Mar 28, 2026 +14
The OG film had breasts in it and it was rated PG or G.
14
RunningPirate Mar 28, 2026 +7
I hope that’s what it said on the permission slip. “Reason for needing permission: T***”
7
vercertorix Mar 28, 2026 +1
Not in this one, that was in the one from 1968
1
Street_Anxiety2907 Mar 28, 2026
Lol even the women showed up

socialchild Mar 28, 2026 +39
Not my favorite adaptation of R&J, although I do love Claire Danes as Juliet, but it is the only adaptation that has Juliet waking up as Romeo is dying. They both see each other and realize what has happeend: it's heartbreaking in a way that merely having her wake up and see him dead cannot touch.
39
Bambiitaru Mar 28, 2026 +16
She looked to be the right age and they didn't have heavy makeup on her.
16
Prudent-Pressure2146 Mar 28, 2026 +7
IIRC she was 17 when they were filming
7
Bambiitaru Mar 29, 2026 +1
Yeah. I think the casting for pretty much all the characters are spot on.
1
turkeyburger124 Mar 28, 2026 +9
It was a devastating and beautiful way to end the film
9
Texas_Crazy_Curls Mar 28, 2026 +5
Fun fact! Natalie Portman was up for the role first, but Leonardo thought she was too young.
5
25sittinon25cents Mar 28, 2026 +6
That's a first
6
vukkuv Mar 28, 2026 +1
Leonardo? Leonardo didn't think anything, who do you think he was? He was only an actor. The producers were the ones who thought it would be awful to have a 12 year old being the romantic interest of a 21 year old guy.
1
savpunk Mar 28, 2026 +9
I loved this movie! I still love it. Everybody and everything was perfect.

My emo heart can’t handle it
16
__i_dont_know_you__ Mar 28, 2026 +9
I was depressed for weeks after falling head over heels in love with Romeo during the aquarium scene. To this day, that scene cuts right through me. Also ended up with an emo heart.
9
shavicus Mar 28, 2026 +7
Mercutio in drag, testy Tybalt and dressed up pistols made this movie for me. Oh! Claire Danes too!
7
CaliggyJack Mar 28, 2026 +13
Baz Luhrman deserves more accolades than he gets unfortunately.
13
katikaboom Mar 28, 2026 +12
So does his wife Catherine Martin, she's responsible for the costuming and production design in a lot of his films
12
BrianOBlivion1 Mar 28, 2026 +5
I never knew until recently that his first film inspired the TV show Dancing With The Stars.
5
Fit-Switch-5795 Mar 28, 2026 +3
"My steps my way, Fran!"
3
VironicHero Mar 28, 2026 +5
I liked the slight change to the ending in the movie better than the play version. The fact that Romeo drinks the poison and then sees Juliet wake with a smile upon seeing his face. It really upped the tragedy because he realized she was alive. And Juliet sees him die now, she doesn’t just find him dead. For a moment they realize they’re both together then it’s over.
5
This_Elk_1460 Mar 28, 2026 +5
We watched this in high school after reading the original. I just remember the entire class bursting out into laughter when Romeo's dad asked for his "longsword" and they hand him a shotgun.
5
Purpinmyblog Mar 28, 2026 +6
Radiohead - “Talk Show Host” playing when we are first introduced to Romeo ( Leo ) Made me a Radiohead fan and as a kid was my first introduction to Leonardo DiCaprio https://youtu.be/SKDOWUstfws?si=Jmd7LQawY28rhW-V
6
keasdenfall Mar 28, 2026 +2
stunning scene love how the light obscures and then reveals his beauty
2
idontevensaygrace Mar 28, 2026 +1
I remember thinking when back when I was 14 years old watching Romeo + Juliet in my English class during freshman year in high school in 1999, Leo looked so mature to me, so grown up. Even though he did that movie right before Titanic he seemed just wise and mature. Now I watch that movie and my God he is SO YOUNG in R+J!! Lol
1
beadzy Mar 28, 2026 +8
and the soundtrack really cemented the entire mood of the film. man i loved that soundtrack. and how young leo and claire danes were. totally holds over time
8
idontevensaygrace Mar 28, 2026 +3
🎶Will you be my Romeo? My go-go Romeo? I see you twist and turn. You look so stupid. I feel just like a local god when I'm with the boys! 🎶🥀
3
Kilkenny5 Mar 28, 2026 +3
I went to see this movie at a matinee on Election Day 1996. I went to see it again three more times that year. It's still one of my all-time favorite movies.
3
meggan_u Mar 28, 2026 +4
This movie is why I became an actor.
4
colong128 Mar 28, 2026 +2
This movie had such a hold on me omg
2
_black_milk Mar 28, 2026 +2
Bloody brilliant adaptation. The ability to make it modern without betraying the story was 🤌✨
2
Alarming_Ad1746 Mar 29, 2026 +2
and a great under-heralded Radiohead song on the soundtrack.
2
gogul1980 Mar 28, 2026 +3
30 years. Christ it was a “blind ticket buy” at my local odeon. Hadn’t seen anything about it and was curious. Was pleasantly surprised by how fun it was. Re-Watched it a few years ago now and you can tell a lot of the young actors didn’t really know what they were saying and it tells with their choices in emphasising certain words over others. But still a good fun interpretation.
3
NudeWithSocks Mar 28, 2026 +3
I love this movie for what it is, but also because it introduced me to Radiohead.
3
Redsfan19 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Their song on that soundtrack is perfection.

Is this back in theaters this year because I would love to see it on a bigger screen.
1
Bovine_Arithmetic Mar 28, 2026 +1
This movie could have been so extraordinarily bad, in concept it sounds like a total flop. Saw it in the theater, expecting a “so bad it’s inadvertently a comedy.” Was blown away by the sheer audacity, and the interpretation was spot-on. PostHaste was genius.
1
k1ytaemnestra Mar 28, 2026 +1
I was the target audience when this was released, but it took me 20 years to fully appreciate this film. My favourite thing is to look for all the Easter eggs in it. Even the design of the Capulet mansion is based off a palazzo.
1
Snakedoctor85 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Classic! Nobody touch it!!
1
SuburbaniteMermaid Mar 28, 2026 +1
I grew up loving the Zeffirelli version. My mom loved so I saw it many times, and I still love it. Because of that loyalty, I wanted to hate this movie and I avoided it for quite a while. When I finally saw it I was so angry with myself. It's an incredible adaptation and firmly ranks in my lifetime top 25 movies.
1
Flannelcommand Mar 28, 2026 +1
Just cause I haven’t seen them mentioned yet: Brian Dennehy and Pete Postlethwaite brought so much gravitas. The cast completely committed and made you fully believe in the unreal world Luhrman built around them.
1
BedGirl5444 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I love this movie so much
1
omicron_pi Mar 28, 2026 +1
I love this film. Had the biggest crush on Danes as a kid
1
CulturalDuty8471 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I loved this movie! I was hoping Wuthering Heights would have been that good.
1
CherryCherry5 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Unbelievable performances by all. I remember seeing it in theaters and I don't think I stopped crying from Mercutio's death until the end. And then for like a good ten minutes afterwards too. Plus, I think it's Baz's best film. Lush, visceral, and vivid, with a great soundtrack too.
1
tarveydent Mar 29, 2026 +1
The masquerade scene makes such a great couples Halloween costume.
1
Much-Switch-8244 Mar 29, 2026 +1
This movie came out when we were 15. Talk about Cupid *hitting* his mark. My girls and I must’ve seen this 10 times in the theater. And what about Garbage on the soundtrack? And the BALLROOM of Baz!? Peak heaven (and exquisite Hell). 💔💫
1
Superb-Fail-9937 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Just watched this with one of my friends the other day. It is still as magnificent and beautiful since the first time I saw it. The soundtrack as well. They both forever live in my soul!

1
LLVC87 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Soundtrack is a banger, walked down the aisle to the instrumental version of I’m kissing you at my wedding last year.
1
EvilHwoarang Mar 29, 2026 +1
Leguizamo stole this entire movie
1
psbecool Mar 29, 2026 +1
I love this film so much, but it’s always bittersweet because a friend of mine from softball killed herself when she was just 12 f****** years old and requested to be buried in a dress similar to Claire Dane’s dress in the end. Beautiful film, sad f****** memory. Really a coming of age tale in more ways than one. RIP Becky.

"Heres thy gold" - Its literally just dollar bills lmao.
1
JoJCeeC88 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Watched this in high school English class. This was around the time that GTA: Vice City was still hot, and everyone *loved* it because it was like watching scenes from a PS2 game.
1
AsherahEnd Mar 29, 2026 +1
Watched this in English class and let me tell you, even the people who never cared about anything else in there enjoyed this movie. As silly at it seems it really works.

30? Wasn’t this written in the 17th century?
-3
pomonalost Mar 28, 2026 +15
They're talking about the movie. The image visible is from the movie.
15
nexusphere Mar 28, 2026 -9
Gottem. Maybe it still hits because of the play, and I don’t know, not a singular interpretation of it.
-9
Dial_888 Mar 28, 2026 +6
You know, it's ok not to comment on things you're not familiar with.
6
nexusphere Mar 28, 2026 -13
Oh I’ve seen the movie. It’s ok for me to comment on anything I want. I still think it was the, i dunno, *writing of the play* and not this performance. But you do you comment gatekeeper.
-13
necroleopard Mar 28, 2026 +10
If the writing was all that mattered then every other relatively faithful adaptation should be equally popular, and they aren’t. You have to give due credit to the direction, production, and performances which are all excellent.
10
nexusphere Mar 28, 2026 -14
That’s one take. Cool story bro.
-14
Prudent-Pressure2146 Mar 28, 2026 +4
The interpretation being wild and anachronistic is what makes this version so memorable though, and it’s this version being complimented
4
pomonalost Mar 28, 2026 +2
Yes, because it's literally based on the play.
2

My absolute favorite film!

It is probably my favorite film from the 90's
1
saollesimone Mar 28, 2026 +1
My coworker hates everything Baz does. He was 20 before R&J came out so he could not have seen it as I did as a teenager and that has made all the difference in our attitudes to the work of Baz.
1
ikonoclasm Mar 28, 2026 +4
Yup. I was 12 when it came out and was blown away by it. I still love R+J to this day, especially the soundtrack.
4
String-Tree Mar 28, 2026 -7
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills whenever this movie is brought up. This is the worst adaptation of Shakespeare I have *ever* seen and people talk about it like it's Citizen Kane or something.

Watching a bunch of young actors barfing out old English clumsily was so cringey I could never watch it again.

Felt like they were choking on the words everytime they spoke lol, I think Leo was the only one where it kind of flowed well

DiCaprio was the only one who was bad, very bad, awful. Claire Danes ate him alive.

Speaking of old, I don't think anyone has seen the 1936 version with Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer looking more like Romeo and Juliet's parents than Romeo and Juliet.

I think it’s a lil older than that 😉

I think this is actively a bad movie (and I will never get over the editing of the death scene making it look like Romeo saw Juliet wake up and THEN chugged the poison). But this, A Knight's Tale (actually a great movie), and Keanu's Johnny Mnemonic (... I liked it but I get why Gibson was done with Hollywood for like 30 years after it) are some of my favorite examples of actively good adaptations. Rather than just recreate the source material they focused on the actual emotion and Message of the story. An ex was a professor who taught media analysis (its been long enough that I have no idea what her degree or title was) and always used R+J as a litmus test. People who freak out at "the changes" honestly don't get the point and REALLY don't understand how Shakespeare was very much the SNL/South Park of their time.

I can’t make my mind up if this movie is a masterpiece or shit

Crazy, almost like they had a proven blueprint to build the story from.

I love that movie. No one will ever be better then Harold Perrineau as Mercutio but my fave R&J is still the 1968 version. I loved Leo in the 96 one but as much as I like Clair I always thought she was miscast.

Claire was perfect. Leo was awful.

Our English teacher in 11th grade showed us this and at first I thought it was gonna be lame cause of the modern setting but this shit was epic.
