Always loved Schreiber in this scene. When I first saw he was in this, it felt like such a weird choice and I kinda expected him to mail it in a little. But holy cow, I became such a fan of his after this role. I'll watch anything he does now. He embodies the grizzled old vet role so well. Goon is a fun as hell movie anyway, the national anthem bit is one of the funniest things ever, but Schreiber definitely stole this movie.

Goon is my favorite sports movie. This is probably the objectively best scene, but the whole movie is fantastic. It was a blind watch and I was blown away

This got a really quiet VoD release when it came out and I distinctly remember spending the 5 bucks and throwing it on expecting it to be a bit of a fun miss. Remains to this day my all time favorite sports movie and I think I’ve seen them all.

It was also one of the first *really good* movies that was added to the streaming version of Netflix, 13 or 14 years ago. I remember watching it constantly in college when the library was still filled with a ton of garbage.

I was pretty disappointed when the movie was about to come out. Kevin Smith was supposedly working on almost the same movie (based on the song 'Hit Somebody') and Sean William Scott was connected to that one, then this movie essentially took its place. That said, the movie came out great and there's every chance that Kevin Smith never would've released the movie even without this being made.

Agreed. I'm glad there's enough love on Listnook for *Goon* because it's just an absolute gem. In my personal Top 5 comedies and easily my favorite sports movie.

His acting was SOOO good. The scene where La Flamme yells at him, the one where he brings the flowers and chocolates to the cafe with Eva, the one where his coach lights him up for failing at playing defense. All fantastic. So evocative

That one scene with the closeup halfway through was when I stopped passively watching and thought, “oh shit, I actually care about these characters.” Such a great movie.

Goon is such a fun movie. However this scene always hits me hard because this is such a sad, introspective, and deep moment that hes trying to impart real knowledge on a subpar guy with dreams of playing hockey; - He's not a hockey player, *and he never will be.* He's sitting there at 3am, staring into his future - not properly grasping the reality or severity of what it all means. Rhea isn't *done*, he's just older - and if youre only taught to punch and get punched, there isnt much left at the end of that career to fall back on besides the anger, loneliness, and 3am smokes at a diner. But all Glatt can see sitting in front of him is a successful hockey career and a plate full of bacon.

It's so real too. Some kids are trained to practically be goons from a young age. It's even sadder when you're a 14 year old and your coach is talking to you like this.

I agree. Im a large guy, and grew quicker at a young age; and my coaches and scouts all would say one form or another of "Use your size to your advantage" because saying "bodycheck that kid" didnt fly; this was *soccer*. I played *fuckin' beer league* hockey when I was in high-school, and there would be grown men attempting to fight me and relive their glory days or something. Like, bro - Im out here in oversized gear and a full cage with a math test at 9am, please dont assault me.
