But in the past, wouldn't there be 'check and balances' to stop the US from invading Iran, going against Ukraine, burning alliances?
Like Nixon resigned before being voted on by the house of representatives.
Are we seeing a cultural failure or a systemic failure. Because in my mind, Epstein alone is nearly impeachable, Venezuela was crazy, Ukraine is corrupt seeming at best, and Iran is single handedly causing economic turmoil for the whole world.
At what point would impeachment function here?
18
WingerRulesApr 1, 2026

Checks and Balances in the US is propaganda lie taught in US schools to indoctrinate people into thinking the US is better than all other countries. We've found out over the last decade that it was all a lie and what was really going on is everyone was operating in good faith because the US was operated by better people. Our checks an balances are actually incredibly weak.
Even the Supreme Court keeps saying the main check is for congress to impeach a president, but that is an entirely political process that requires 2/3rds of congress to approve, its basically asking a political party to voluntarily convict itself because the US effectively is a 2 party split congress country. It's a f****** joke.
On top of it the Supreme Court granted immunity from prosecution for most acts of the president, immunity from disclosure of any communications and records between staff from within an administration, and even bars congress or courts from even PROBING what the intent was behind actions of an administration. It's why we'll never know the true reason why they started this war was, because presidential administrations no longer have to disclose it even when questioned by congress or in courts. This is complete 180 from the Iraq war where Bush administration officials had to disclose under oath the decision making behind the war, and we found out they purposely manufactured lies to justify it.
If Watergate happened now, no way would Nixon had stepped down or be removed. In fact, the above ruling making records of communications within an administration off limits from congress and courts means the Nixon Tapes would have never been a thing made public.

Cultural and systemic in my opinion. It's a cycle. The rich feed the poor the story of building them up (systemic), the poor believe it (cultural), vote in the rich who lied to them, and then they make stuff shittier.
Honestly, people play too hard into the "Russian people are just lost causes. They're all too used to the oppression and only care to drink and pass the days because they know nothing better is coming"

Exactly, I don’t know why people still expect him to even realize when he makes a mistake. Being the narcissist he is, he’s clinically incapable of understanding he did. There’s not a single instance of him admitting a mistake, he’s always either throwing one of his own under the bus or blaming an ally.
All his policies can just be bought piece by piece with a subtle or not so subtle bribe. Western allies can’t bribe him with billions of dollars but they can give him the FIFA peace prize or other ego inflating nonsense. Forget Epstein files or Russia asset evidence (cause he would just play the victim anyway), I bet it’s simpler and Russia just has no qualms paying directly for dismantling policies that Trump is driving.

I think it’s also important to point out that we are under constant bombardment by propaganda which is used to further divide us. Also the right wing in this country has been waging a war against the left for the past 50 years. The left didn’t know that a war was ongoing until just now basically, and are still trying to exist in a place where decorum, tradition, and integrity are important.

Does anyone really think the US would respect an Article 5 invocation by a NATO country if, say, Russia invaded? The US cosplays as NATO but if push came to shove we wouldn't be there to help.

No. NATO is de facto over, Europe and Canada need to move past that and work together. They can still stomp a Russian invasion even if the US is neutral (assuming the US doesn't take Russia's side).

NATO is not "over" just because of the US. For many smaller countries it's still a military alliance that puts us under the defensive umbrella of several nuclear powers. It's still a hundred times better than defending alone.

Yeah it's more like the era of NATO being the US+ friends is over.
no big deal imo. It was only the most dominant military arrangement in history, and it's not like we were slowly strangling our enemies simply by existing or anything.

Maybe NATO should reexamine the USA. I don’t understand why Rutte is not loyal to the principles and charters he has an obligation to defend. USA started a war without any form of consultation and now Rubio has the gall to suggest a re-evaluation ? It only proves that the US can act with impunity and with a total disregard for its allies. Shameful !

Rubio is actually just trying to please his boss, he is probably not actually interested on leaving NATO.
He and Tim Kaine set up a law that makes it very difficult to actually withdraw from NATO lawfully, it was clearly intented to make it harder for Trump to do it:

We're at the stage now where America being part of a NATO operation may be more harm than good.
Imagine trying to carry out a complex military operation with people who do not grasp reality and have no capacity to listen to the advice of others.
Everyone with the most basic understanding of the dynamics in Iran, knew this is not a war America could win.
I would not want British forces to be dependant upon such incompetence in an allied operation against Russia.
They would be a liability.

Speaking as a Brit, the US is not a reliable partner. It's pointless being too craven towards them, beyond what is in our immediate self-interest, because no agreements or goodwill lasts long enough for it to even matter.
Our vaunted trade deal that Starmer got with a letter from the King? Didn't even last long enough for the ink to dry, we got slapped with the +10% tariff the same as everyone else.
Trump and co blast our armed forces, call them ineffectual and inconsequential, then demand our participation.
Why any British citizen sees this state of affairs as aspirational is utterly beyond me. Farage and Reform voters salivating at the idea of being treated as even more of a vassal state, a "special relationship" based around subjugation.

The US is struggling to engage in a war with a single country and it thinks **leaving** a military alliance is a power move? They’re the only member of NATO to have ever triggered the collective defence article.
Europe should just close all those US bases and restrict the US military from its airspace then, won’t be so easy to bomb school children when they have to fly around an entire continent.

Defense pact.. people wanting to steal oil, minerals and gain Lebenraum should get their membership revoked.
Hopefully a better NATO emerges after US leaves. Rules:
1). Defence pact! (just to be sure the morons get it).
2) No border issues like before.
3) No war criminals allowed in (So Putin, Bibi etc). Or get booted out if countries elect such.
4) must follow UN decisions (so no genocide etc) and international law.
5) Working democracy (so max 2 x 4 years of power. No mad kings or dictators.)
6) Free trade between members since peaceful.
7) War tariffs on all aggressors to fund new NATO, UN and international law. Make theft and Labenraum less profitable.
Open for all that got their shit together, like Canada, Australia, Poland etc.

Seems like their way of thinking is, we are America therefore everyone will bend the knee and we get to do whatever we want. Doesn’t work like that.

We Europeans do understand that the US have chosen to ignore their constitution (e. g. by declaring wars without congressional consent) as well as international law and treaties. US representatives in turn should understand that we have not. We are not allowed to take part in wars of aggression, neither directly nor indirectly.
So maybe the sane path forward would be to find a way to conduct your lawless endeavors while at the same time respecting our rules of engagement and not demanding straight out illegal actions that might get our politicians and military personnel into a jail.
We are not your vassals, and we still have some standards and procedures that we adhere to, you dumb mfers.

Rubio should re-examine the Treaty's text: https://www.nato.int/en/about-us/official-texts-and-resources/official-texts/1949/04/04/the-north-atlantic-treaty
Nowhere there it says that NATO parties are obliged to help an aggressor, which the USA is in this case.
Also, I'd say the USA didn't fulfill at least the first 2 articles, if not more.

This, coming after they talked about annexing Greenland and making Canada into a "51st state"?
For everything else, NATO is a defensive alliance. Yes, the agreement is that NATO countries will band together if one of them is attacked, but that doesn't mean a NATO country can simply start a war with another country - especially a war that involves flimsy justification, public disinformation, an overblown threat, murderously poor planning, no clear victory conditions, a gradually creeping reversal on the idea of whether there will be boots on the ground, and no exit strategy - and expect NATO to leap to its aid. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Europe doesn't need the US to protect itself. The US and Canada need each other for mutual defence so NORAD would still be there. Leaving NATO would fit into Trump's Donore Doctrine. So why not? Well, it would mean that the US could not project power globally and protect international commerce. But if he truly beleives the US doesn't need anyone then why not?
The US has benefited greatly from NATO and having those bases all over the world. However, they need to remember those bases are on sovereign territory. That has never been an issue before because the US always consulted allies before using those bases for military strikes.
Rubio (and Trump) has done poor job of soliciting ally support. This is no compelling reason to start a war with Iran. There are no clear objectives or exit strategy. And, it threatens the global economy.

NATO is already re-examining its relationship with the US. The Trump Regime has threatened to annex Canada, a NATO member state, and Denmark; a NATO member territory. The regime then started a war with Iran and did not brief any of its allies besides Israel (who was in on it). Trump then floated the idea that the US would not defend NATO allies against Russia, prompting the UK and France to remind everyone that Europe falls under their nuclear aegis.
NATO is a defensive alliance that has responded when member nations were attacked — the US pulled the Article V trigger following 9/11.
