Running Point S2 review and discussion

Posted by Eden_Matt

Just finished binging it and I have to say it’s really well made and this season really felt much stronger than season 1. I enjoyed the first season but I thought the supporting cast didn’t have much to work with, but S2 was so much fuller and the characters really felt more fleshed out. The additions to the main cast were really great too, especially Ray Romano, and the cameos were so much fun (the Octavia Spencer episode was the best one imo) Overall really strong season and I very much recommend it if you need a stress free comedy to just chill and relax. i really hope it gets renewed for S3.

Really hoping they would pick up soon on season 3. Loved season 1 and 2.

damn i totally agree about ray romano, he was perfect casting for this show 😂 season 1 felt like it was still finding its groove but s2 really hit different. the writing got so much sharper and you could tell they figured out what each character brings in the story. that octavia spencer episode had me dying - her timing was just chef's kiss 🔥 really hoping netflix doesn't cancel it like they do with everything good. this type of low-key comedy is exactly what we need more of these days

I’m hopeful cause Netflix has been good to most of its original comedies lately and the ending kind of implies that there are plans for another season. We’ll see, season 2 was announced like a week after season 1’s release so fingers crossed we hear something in the coming days 🤞🏻

All those shows hint another season or end on a cliffhanger until they get cancelled.

I loved it, solid 9/10. Kate Hudson and Brenda Song are my favorites, so I may be biased, but everyone was stellar this season. It was a much stronger season than s1 and the cliffhanger at the end has me eagerly waiting for S3.

the writing on Canada could be more clever, like I really wanna believe American writers know better, but honestly hard to say these days.

Or using Saskatoon lumberjack joke where I'm almost positive that grown ups 2 had the running bit of the guy in the pool from Saskatoon. Seems like they couldn't come up with their own joke but whatever I don't find the show good or the writing good but its one of those shows that I just hate watch/use as background noise.

The "having a doughnut named after him at Tim Hortons" was genius and then it just turned into a sad characature, why is Toronto being written as a small backwoods town where they don't swear and bears come into schools.

As a Canadian and a big Raptors fan, it definitely got my hackles up...or was that elbows 😉

I love it. I just finished the whole season in 1 day and I am so looking forward to a season 3. Season 2 is much better than season 1 and I like the trajectory it's heading.

I think Ally and Ness will hook up in season 3. Ally has already hinted that she’s annoyed with her husband because he wants to move to Texas, and Sandy made a comment suggesting that Ally and Ness might be planning their honeymoon. In the last episode, they even fell asleep next to each other on the couch. It all kind of points in that direction. What bothers me is that they’re hinting at something between Isla and this Luke guy. I mean she JUST got together with Jay. It would be nice if season 3 had more episodes. 10 isn’t enough, and some of them are only about 20 minutes long. Even just two more episodes would make a difference.

I said the exact same thing. They had a lot pf moments together this season and you can even see Ness giving her a peck on the cheek at one point while celebrating the championship, as well. All that combining with Ness asking her to go to Europe sounded fishy to me cause they were never that close, but this season really made me think the writers are hinting something will happen between them. Also, he rarely mentioned Bituin this season Regarding Isla and Luke, as soon as they began the witty banter, I knew they hinted a new love interest for her and I like him more than Jay, especially now with the ending of s2. While I love Jay, I always thought their relationship as platonic, not endgame

Season 2 is a good follow up to season 1. Kate Hudson performs the role of Isla outstandingly.

I’m just really confused about all of the MAGA comments this season. At first, I thought they were making fun of MAGA with the Mar-a-lago and measles comments but then when Jay said he brought his kids to LA for “vaccine exemptions” that made me think they weren’t joking?

The tariffs joke, the canada bashing, got weird vibes too!

Don’t be surprised if they start trying to normalize MAGA little by little. Many production/media companies are getting bought out by Larry Ellison. Netflix hasn’t but I’m sure him monopolizing the industry will have some effect or put pressure on others.

Need season 3. Watched season 2 in one sitting. It was good, funny. They really balance physical humor too!

Just popped in to agree with OP. Stress-free comedies written well are few and far between on every platform these days, and for someone who tires quickly of mystery/crime/politics-driven comedies and romance-centric stories, Running Point has really ticked a lot of boxes for a comedy (that has no laugh track!). The family isn't written too dysfunctionally -- there are actually quite a few "I got your back" moments between the siblings that I thought were really nice, especially in season 2 -- and the basketball angle really helps dilute the plotlines, preventing them from skewing towards 'too romantic' or 'too girl boss-y'. Don't get me wrong, I do love me a girl boss, but when it's the only focus of the show, the episodes can feel repetitive. I feel that we need more comedies like Running Point. The last one I enjoyed this way was Derry Girls, and that was made almost 10 years ago!

It was a breezy, fun and easy watch. I laughed out loud a few times each episode (which I feel like is rarer for comedies nowadays) - and I liked that it kept the pace going without dragging any one storyline too long. I was kind of surprised Justin Theroux was a series regular but he was a welcome addition as well as Ray Romano (though I wish we had seen him more!) I like that they lean into the fact that they’re all entitled nepo babies and just have fun with it rather than try to justify anything around it. Loved the ep with Octavia Spencer as others have said and wasn’t surprised to see that was the one Mindy Kaling wrote. Great guest stars all around (a lot from the Mindy television universe from Mindy Project and NHIE). Definitely an improvement from S1 and could see it continuing on - hope it gets picked up. Random but loved all the references to Traitors LOL.

I enjoyed the season a lot. Easy watch with lots of laughs but I am a sucker for Mindy Kaling humor. I do think it felt rushed but I blame the 10 30mins episode season vs a 1hr episode seasons where we’d have more world building and each character gets more screen time. The family dynamic is dysfunctional but there is heart to it. I’m also one of the few that enjoy love interests stories and Lev clearly wasn’t it, Jay was the one until I saw the chemistry with Luke McShay. That got me excited because I felt Jay was just too obvious and when they got together, it’s like now what? Hope they get a season 3! We need light easy shows like this. Way better than Emily in Paris so it better not get canceled.

I thought there were a bunch of great laugh out loud moments!! (Isla missing the ball because of that six pack!!) I thought it was stronger overall and much more entertaining, even if it was about a bunch of rich nepo babies :)

When Ness had Sandy’s ass shot playing on a loop in the conference room I was howling.

The mom jokes and Isla feeling queasy at the end makes me think they’re setting up a pregnancy plotline for season 3.

Mhh I didn’t quite catch that, but on the other hand the summer scouting trip to Europe sounds like it’ll be a big plot point for next season (looking at Ali and Ness 👀).

Currently reading “the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo” and episode 2 ruined it for me. I’m so fuckin pissed, like what are the chances!?

I enjoyed it; it went down pretty easy while I was doing something else. I liked Ike Barinholtz as the cousin, because I spent the first episode last year convinced he was playing Ness. I was pretty surprised at how delightful I found Chet Hanks, of all people, this season. And after this, Netflix needs to give Brenda Song her own series. And then renew it for, like, 5-8 seasons.

I LOVED IT!! I just wish that a) neither Isla nor Sandy ever got back together with their exes just so they break up like two or three episodes in. They went through all that trouble of winning them back just to have irreconcilable differences (partly kinda soured me the idea of Jay and Isla together because of how she chased Lev as if he was really the one). Had they parted ways in s1, I think I would’ve felt more invested in their potential relationship, even if it was a teasing, and b) they would’ve done more with the Poacher character and a better Canada storyline (what was the beef anyways?) Anyhow, the Brielle and Travis relationship was one of the best highlights to me. And Ray Romano, that was just top casting choice!

Can someone tell me what accent Brielle has?

Can someone help me here. Spoiler alert… I don’t understand the very last scene. Didn’t stay move to Boston to be closer to his children? Why would he move back to LA? That whole plot feels like it was purposeless

I think in part it’s be with Isla because keep in mind he probably doesn’t know about the shady stuff that cam did.

I appreciate how there was a gay professional basketball player and it wasn’t even a thing, it’s nice to see what can become one day.

I didn't enjoy season 2 as much, it felt so rushed, not as funny, things seemed to happen behind the scenes....

The pacing seemed to be off, and it was slightly boring. In season 1, I had scenes I watched multiple times. Here, nothing stuck out. Plus, this didn't seem to mirror the Lakers at all anymore. I couldn't find the similarities.

The basketball players had so much less screen time this season. Isla as the lead commands the bulk of the series, as expected, but I’m sick of watching Isla sucking face with Jay (the bona fide stripper and man candy), and the repeated tropes of the men around her betraying her - Cam, then at the end Jay. With a short ten-episode run, I don’t know why there’s a need to focus on her love life with THREE men. Poor Max Greenfield aside, now it’s Scott Speedman added to the mix, and he’s already shown off his abs once - will probably be doing so more next season since he has to act next to the vapid female lead. I like the series and the characters, but I didn’t know I was signing up to watch a highly fashionable middle-aged woman dealing with temptations and flirtations so frequently. Characters like Ness and maybe Jackie really got the short end of the stick this season.

I’m on episode 8 and I can’t help from getting weird vibes… canada bashing… hockey bashing… is mindy kaling suddenly MAGA? Are the writers the least bit aware of the current political climate?

stitch_speech_repeat 21 hr ago +2
I was wondering the same thing and I’m only on episode 2 and there’s already been a mention of “tariffs being good sometimes” and the sports manager being frat brothers with Brett Kavanaugh, and those lines made me wonder!

This is really an american audience show. It certainly is not about empowering women. Almost every single person in that show is a nepo or a millionaire, and no one outside of US knows anything about american football, rugby....I have no idea what sport this show is about. I braved myself onto episode 2 with hudson just spewing up numbers and I had to turn it off... Happy for all those millionaire actors finally 'making it' in america.

Well you wouldn’t know what the show is about probably because you watched just one episode…idk what point you’re trying to make here.
