Judge a country all you want, but don’t judge all the people of that country as though they are complicit. “As a Canadian” lol- I’m also Canadian, and wouldn’t want Japanese internment camps and mass killing PoWs hung on my head.
-12
aSneakyChicken7 2 days ago +37
Yes, any military is in part a reflection of the society from which it is born, similarly it’s why any country that wants to maintain a decent reputation will adequately investigate and punish its soldiers for committing crimes or else it just says that their actions are sanctioned and permissible. It’s why one of the military justice system charges in most countries is for conduct that brings ill repute on the organisation because it inevitably also extends to the country’s reputation as a whole, and gives easy propaganda fodder for adversary nations.
37
Immediate_Werewolf99 2 days ago -5
So all Americans were implicit in the use of agent orange? If someone said “most Americans don’t like the war in Vietnam it’s the politicians” you’d argue with that as well?
-5
_hlvnhlv 2 days ago +2
At least they were protesting, and trying to do something about it
2
aSneakyChicken7 2 days ago +1
Right or wrong you can surely understand that if a country just repeatedly keeps doing shit that it’s going to get a reputation for it, like the US and starting or intervening in wars for oil, or staging coups with the CIA, or being indifferent about killing local civilians in war, etc. whether some people inside the country disagree with it or not, so to tie it back to your initial question, for better or worse countries are judged on those actions as a whole by those outside it, and is exactly what people in countries that are infamous for hating America like say Iran think of it. Presumably there’s some Russians that don’t agree with their invasion of Ukraine but that’s not going to change the perception of the country being aggressive expansionists, when they’ve done the same before with Crimea, Georgia, Chechnya, etc. nor their reputation for not caring about life even that of their own, etc. because that is how their military behaves and it reflects badly on them as a whole.
1
Immediate_Werewolf99 2 days ago +1
The comment I was supporting didn’t say Russia wasn’t behaving immorally or that they shouldn’t be tied to their actions. They said all Russians should not be blamed for the actions of their government or military personnel. Surely you can understand that?

The ignorance is where his power comes from. If it weren’t Trump it would be somebody else. A huge percentage of the population has been somehow convinced that critical thought, the scientific process, and introspection are patently un-American and it’s disgusting.

I think this is pretty clearly the end of the Republic. 1/3 of voters support this, 1/3 of voters literally don’t care enough to vote 2x a decade, and the only “opposition party” we have served the exact same Epstein-class pedogarchs. And they will never let themselves lose this power. Why would they?  It’s over. The US will now sink into irrelevance like Russia. Literally can’t believe I have to raise my daughter in a country run by incel Nazis.

For real, I never understood what some people see in him. Attacking the parade would not offer strategic advantage to Ukraine. It would be akin to the terrorist attacks that Russia regularly launches against Ukraine. The Ukrainian military prefers to destroy Russia's ability to attack Ukraine, so they attack military and logistics targets. Russia is trying to break the Ukrainians will to fight, so they inflict civilian causalities. Never mind that "breaking the will to fight" has never worked.
18
Gwalchgwn92 3 days ago +15
Of course breaking the will works. But you don't break it by driving people into desperation. You do it by making them apathic. Look at the US for a good example.
15
trisul-108 2 days ago +4
Disrupting the parade would have a huge psychological impact in Russia. And impact so powerful that Putin was in fear. Also, during any truce, one would expect Russians to move troops which they were unable to move to position on the front because of Ukrainian drones. I was surprised that Ukraine agreed not to attack them as they move into position.
4
Doomnezeu 2 days ago +2
Hold on, the parade is full of russian soldiers that could, and I would argue will, be sent to the frontlines in Ukraine. Why wouldn't it be a military target?

It's one of the things Ukraine got out of it, but it also happened right after Putin's call to Trump, and it also contradicted Zelensky's statements from a few hours earlier.
2

It was because of Ukraine’s declared ceasefire that was broken by Russia, obviously.
7

Russia's already claiming it was Ukraine that broke the ceasefire. And since there's no practical way to actually know, the people that tend to believe Putin will believe him and they'll hate Ukraine even more. That includes Trump.

5
krkus 3 days ago +17
To help Putin basically. After Russia declared uniliteral ceasefire, Ukraine did it also, but one day earlier. Russia didn't respect it and likked a bunch of people across Ukraine. Because of that Ukraine had a right to respond and bomb the 9th May Victory Parade. This is where Trump comes in, gives Putin helping hand by declaring ceasfire for both sides with prisoner exchange.
17
hornswoggled111 3 days ago +7
Then Russia decided not to do the prisoner exchange, after the parade was over.

33
Plenty_Ambassador424 3 days ago +44
I think Zelenskyy signing a decret allowing russia to hold the parade is a much more telling message. It was ultimately up to Ukraine whether russia was to hold the parade or not. They have made that very clear by the attacks on moscow leading up to it.
44
CAWWW 2 days ago +7
Only if russian media reported on it, which they obviously aren't going to. There is a lot of youtube channels that just read and translate russian newspapers and according to said media everythings still going great. Its much, much harder to bullshit your way out of Ukraine bombing your parade. Yeah, Russians (that speak english) on the internet know better but a sizable chunk of the country that just watch the news or read papers have a very skewed idea of whats going on.
7

3
StageAboveWater 3 days ago +44
Ukraine handled this masterfully they way they did already. They prevented bad press with their early ceasefire request, they prevented possible backfire from an attack on the parade and they humiliated Russia with the 'decree to give permission'. Then they also only agreed to the ceasefire at the last minute which meant air defences had already been repositioned to Moscow and they took advantage of this by launching an enormous air assault upon the undefended areas.
44
MetalBawx 3 days ago +29
Bomb what? Some expendable mooks? Nothing important was displayed in that parade and Putin was celebrating from a bunker. Did you think he actually had the balls to show up in person? All they had was a prerecorded message from dear leader.
29
sumregulaguy 2 days ago +7
Yup. Spiteful Kremlin rat even went back on the prisoner swap. The humiliation was that bad. It doesn't even matter that Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire, simply having the means to disrupt Putin's parade was enough to ruin it.
7
SmoothConfection1115 3 days ago +19
I agree with the bombing, but not the parade. There wasn’t shit at that parade to bomb. But there were other targets like refineries, depots, train stations, etc., that all would’ve been great targets.
19
Zolo49 3 days ago +9
No, they should’ve bombed as many other Russian assets as possible while leaving the parade completely untouched.
9
ReginaDea 3 days ago +4
Ukraine doesn't need for Russia to be able to spin them as fascists by bombing a parade that celebrates Soviet victory over the Nazis. Ukraine handled it well, by leaving the parade alone, their optics is now "Putin had to beg us to let him host his parade".

1
Extreme-Study8301 3 days ago +21
Stories like this are exactly why many people struggle to take ceasefire announcements seriously anymore. A pause in fighting is supposed to create at least a minimal sense of safety for civilians, yet violations continue almost immediately while ordinary people are the ones injured or killed. Beyond the immediate tragedy, repeated breakdowns like this also damage any remaining trust in future negotiations, because promises of de-escalation begin to feel more symbolic than real.
