Russia demands Ukraine withdraw from Donbas within 2 months, Zelensky says
The Kyiv Independent
Russia demands Ukraine withdraw from Donbas within 2 months, Zelensky says
Russia is signaling to the U.S. that it could seize the region by force within that period, and would then demand "different conditions" in negotiations, Zelensky said.

1
PayaV87 Mar 31, 2026 +25
They are going to anyway. Ukraine gives up Donbas positions and start to retreat, Russia will take over Donbas and (surely) won’t shoot Ukraine in the back. Come on now. This literally never happens in war, it’s always current frontlines that becomes borders. If Zelensky agrees to this, Russia only need a false flag attack to restart the war, and get Donbas for free.

"Allies" asked him to stop seemingly https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0e7lrxrelwo > "We have received messages from some of our partners asking about how our responses against Russia's oil sector - the energy sector - can be reduced," Zelensky said in the voice message. > "If Russia is ready not to strike Ukraine's energy, then we'll respond by not attacking theirs." It's so stupid, their power plants are attacked but they can't fight back the same way.
310
redpandafire Mar 31, 2026 +151
Honestly I blame the west dragging its ass on clean energy, EV's, and defense. It was too rich for too long, why change? Suddenly everyone's realized who owns the oil and gas way too late.
151
Not_Sure__Camacho Mar 31, 2026 +41
Trump was trying to enrich oil oligarchs that he thinks are his friends.  Putin is one of those "friends".
41
SidewaysFancyPrance Mar 31, 2026 +12
Putin was very good at letting people drink deeply from the oligarch well, getting them absolutely *addicted* while letting them think *they* were the big dogs in charge. They're hooked on the money and power and can't live without it, and will do whatever he wants to anyone he points at.
12
Not_Sure__Camacho Mar 31, 2026 +3
My Youtube feed, for whatever reason (probably a video that I clicked on here) recommends I watch a channel called the Military Channel. They seem slightly like a European based propaganda channel, but they had a video out the other day that insisted people in Russia are starting to call for Putin to be executed. I don't know how authentic the video is, but I hope that there is some truth in their reporting.
3
Valkyrie17 Mar 31, 2026 +5
>people in Russia are starting to call for Putin to be executed That's so vague

1
Magnus_Helgisson Apr 1, 2026 +1
The problem is, some of those people in russia are starting to call for putin to be executed *because he isn’t waging the war in Ukraine effectively enough*
1
Not_Sure__Camacho Apr 1, 2026 +1
I'm perfectly fine with whatever reason. It's like my dumbass countrymen that want the Iran war to close up because gas is at $4.00. The bottom line is that they were both illegal wars. I don't care if Russians want Putin's head because he picked a very pathetic individual to run the U.S. Whatever the reason, let them speak out against him.
1
DoomguyFemboi Apr 1, 2026 +1
I used to watch it, it basically takes a single headline and writes long videos on it, with loads of speculation. While they do source other places, they also just source a bunch of other youtube videos who all source each other. They'll take something like a new shell, or new gun system, which has promise, and then blow it up to it being a "game changer that is radically redefining the battlefield". It's propaganda of course, with a kernel of truth, but it's so sensationalist it gets kinda draining because every day you see "things are absolutely changing!", then when they don't you feel kinda weird.
1
Not_Sure__Camacho Apr 1, 2026 +1
Sadly, that's what YouTube has turned into, which is what has me turning away from some channels that I genuinely think would be worth subscribing to. Probably a good 1/6th of my YouTube recommendations are, "Trump \_\_\_\_\_\_ exposed, spells the end for his Presidency". It's become so tiring.
1

Crack dealers have nothing on oil extractors. Those folks dictate everything, which is why they don't let us get clean.

1

1
solapelsin Mar 31, 2026 +2
I don’t disagree, but I think he already promised to slow down with that, given the general oil situation caused by someone else… I don’t think opening up any sort of export markets  for Russia/letting them keep their resources in peace is especially wise though.
2
universe_fuk8r Mar 31, 2026 +14
If 'slow down' means 'attack so intensive on russian oil refineries air alarms went off in Estonia' then they are slowing down, yeah.

USA and EU will stop supporting Ukraine in this case
-2
Pale-Factor-8574 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Zelensky can't get more support from EU due to Orban. Until that changes, it is in Ukraine's best interest to continue combat operations. USA is already almost out of the picture completely. Ukraine is beginning defense exports. They should continue bombing in response to threats.
2
Scorch_Tendon Apr 1, 2026 +1
It's doesn't change. Especially when EU desperately needs oil. Ukraine started what? I don't get it. So like also Russia continue bombing and also will continue combat operations. But Russia havet TCR bus which take male citizens from street

**What Zelensky actually said** Zelensky confirmed on March 30 that Ukraine had received signals [UNITED24 Media](https://united24media.com/latest-news/zelenskyy-confirms-partner-requests-to-reduce-strikes-on-russian-oil-facilities-amid-energy-crisis-17410) from partners about scaling back strikes on Russian oil and energy infrastructure, framing Ukraine's strikes as retaliatory and conditional on Russia stopping its own energy attacks. Crucially, he did not specify which countries made the request. [AOL](https://www.aol.com/articles/zelensky-says-allies-asked-him-175357220.html) **The US connection is the obvious inference** In response to escalating energy prices linked to the war and disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz, the United States recently relaxed certain sanctions previously imposed on Russian oil. [Bode living](https://www.bode-living.com/2026/03/30/ukraines-president-zelensky-claims-allies-urged-reduction-in-attacks-on-russian-energy-sector/) Specifically, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent issued a temporary authorization to permit countries to purchase Russian oil currently stranded at sea, framing it as a move to stabilize global energy markets roiled by the Iran war. [CNN](https://www.cnn.com/2026/03/13/energy/us-russia-sanctions-relief-oil-hnk-intl) The pattern is unmistakable: the same administration that's easing Russian oil sanctions to bring prices down would logically also be asking Ukraine not to blow up Russian oil terminals. Both actions point in exactly the same direction. **Why attributing this to the EU makes no sense** This is where the "EU did it" narrative falls apart completely. European leaders, including Macron, Merz, and the European Council president, rebuked Trump's decision to ease Russian oil sanctions [Time](https://time.com/article/2026/03/13/trump-europe-russia-oil-sanctions-iran-war/) , arguing it strengthened Russia's war machine. Germany's Merz explicitly said "we believe it is wrong to ease the sanctions" and that Russia continues to show no willingness to negotiate. [Time](https://time.com/article/2026/03/13/trump-europe-russia-oil-sanctions-iran-war/) The EU was the loudest voice demanding *more* pressure on Russia, not less. It would be contradictory for them to simultaneously be telling Ukraine to ease off Russian oil infrastructure. **The broader Trump logic** Bessent even floated the possibility of going further, telling Fox Business "we may unsanction other Russian oil," [Roll Call](https://rollcall.com/2026/03/12/ukraine-supporters-oppose-easing-of-russia-sanctions/) and Trump told House Republicans that sanctions on some countries would be lifted "until this straightens out." [Roll Call](https://rollcall.com/2026/03/12/ukraine-supporters-oppose-easing-of-russia-sanctions/) This is a consistent policy direction from the administration: get oil flowing, lower prices, deal with geopolitics later. Asking Ukraine to stop hitting terminals fits perfectly within that.

It sounds like they are getting butchered after the comm issues. Their offensive plans melted. empty threats are the best they got.  A real shame the US is so weakened and the EU is busy cleaning up their mess atm because this could have been a great opportunity to end the war.
3
HumanWithComputer Mar 31, 2026 +139
Putin is likely trying to infuence Trump by this 'threat' to get him to put more pressure on Ukraine to give up their territory. Zelensky understands how Putin plays this 'game' by now and won't be impressed or scared by this.

> Putin is likely trying to infuence Trump by this 'threat' to get him to put more pressure on Ukraine to give up their territory. ...and that influence is likely to be effective, given Trump's trusting Putin over and above America's intelligence agencies. Basically, Trump has been, and will likely continue, providing aid and comfort to Russia - America's arch enemy for over 80 years. The Constitution has something to say about what this aid and comfort means (spoiler: treason) - and also has a remedy.
24

Protean_Protein Mar 31, 2026 +89
I think Zelensky made a very powerful and interesting point some time ago (I can’t recall if it was a year or two ago), that, basically, he can’t just unilaterally stop fighting, because at that point the risk becomes extreme desperation on the part of Ukrainians who have been fighting and losing loved ones since 2014. Up to now, Ukraine’s efforts have been in accordance with international law and indeed, valiant, but if you remove all hope for a fair resolution, you risk a turn to terror against ordinary Russians. How can you tell young people that their fighting and loss has all been for nothing and not expect a significant portion of them to want to take revenge against Russians, regardless of the formal conditions of war? While the Ukrainian state continues to reflect the will of its people and to offer hope, Russian civilians are protected from that.
89
alexmikli Mar 31, 2026 +7
>you risk a turn to terror against ordinary Russians No matter the war's outcome, there are going to be reprisals and ethnic hatred for decades over this war. You're going to see murders in bars in London between Russians and Ukrainians over this, for example.
7
Protean_Protein Apr 1, 2026 +7
It hasn’t really happened yet. Ukrainian expats by and large haven’t turned to violence against Russians abroad, unless provoked. Zelensky’s point was about the role of the Ukrainian state in managing its people and their sense of justice.
7
alexmikli Apr 1, 2026 +2
I'm talking about the coming decades and (mostly) civilian stuff. Bar fights, vandalism, assaults, etc. Maybe the HUR will try to hunt down war criminals on vacation or the Russians will try to assassinate political leaders some more. We'll see how bad it gets but I'm expecting a good amount.
2
Protean_Protein Apr 1, 2026 +3
Again, the point is that this at least partially depends on whether Ukraine is supported by the rest of the world or not.
3
Several-Customer7048 Apr 1, 2026 -1
No it doesn’t at all. This is one of the reasons invading a region and destabilizing it militarily is such a dumb idea as it creates future instability and insurgency. However just like the Taliban and bin laden is the fault of the CIA and USA any thing arising from Ukraine will be the doing of Russia as Ukraine had no choice in the matter.
-1
confidentlyfish Apr 1, 2026
Ukraine is already employing terror against ordinary Russians.
0
Scorch_Tendon Apr 1, 2026 -5
Fun fact. Russian is also act in accordance with international law (Kosovo say hello). And no. It's bullshit. We are not protected even now from some ukrainian drones and British missiles. And yeah its strikes not only military or industrial but civilian objectives. Ukrainians have repeatedly attacked civilians both in Donetsk, Luhansk, and on Russian territory before 2022. Many in Russia want to bomb Ukrainians back to the Stone Age just because we are certain about terrorist attacks from Ukraine after official ceasefire. Ukraine created strong anti-russian ideology and it's started long before Crimea. Moore over Russian Military have restricted order to avoid sever damage of civilian objects and city's, such as Kharkov for example.
-5
anotherserf Apr 1, 2026 +2
\> Fun fact. Russian is also act in accordance with international law  Fun drop of disinformation. It most definitely is not. \> Ukraine created strong anti-Russian ideology No, Russia carefully created that ideology by invading, occupying and genociding its neighbors countless times over centuries. To pretend not to understand why other countries "hate" Russia is just as naive and stupid as pretending not to understand why most people in Iran hate the US right now. If your country repeatedly does stupid and aggressive things, of course people are going to hate you for it. \> It's bullshit. Putin's war absolutely is bullshit. It's really too bad Russians are suffering also. But WTF, man - this war has a very clear aggressor party, and it isn't Ukraine. Что посеешь, то и пожнёшь.

Have to wonder. Russia is starting to heavily censor the internet. No more What's app or telegram. Now required to use state supported Max. VPNs are now under attack by the Kremlin. Mobile Internet outages. Really looks like a regime looking reassert control domestically after being unable to project it outside it's borders. It will be interesting to see if the Kremlin can install a isolated state model like North Korea.

Russia's been running on hot air for a while, the economists keeping their economy afloat and the propagandists trying to make said efforts look effective have been doing a fantastic job. This might be able to last for a few more years, but no matter the outcome of the war, it's going to take a MASSIVE hit after this. Yes the oil/gas money will come back eventually, but every other part of their economy was hit and there will be a whiplash effect.

We are abandoning them. It's sickening.

EU is in a perfect position to flip the tables on Russia at the moment. Double down on defending Ukraine and create a proper alliance with them while the US is busy biting off more than it can chew. Even Krasnov might not have much to say about it if we do.

scarrysneks Apr 1, 2026 +4
Just dragging this shit out. The EU should just send troops at this point.

A man is yelling in a railway station: ‘Give me back my suitcase! Give it back, or the same thing will happen as last time!’ Someone asks, ‘What happened last time?’ He says, ‘They didn’t give it back last time either!’

So there is a dialogue going on… that’s encouraging. Also, seems like Russia just blinked.

The Donbas region is exceptionally rich in natural resources, primarily known for containing over 56% of Ukraine's hard coal reserves (estimated at $12 trillion). It is a major industrial hub with significant deposits of rock salt, natural gas, shale gas, rare earth elements like lithium, tantalum, and cesium, as well as minerals for construction and steel production.

Demands? Nah. Demands require an ability to force follow through. Be accurate. They're pleading. Begging one might say.

awfulWinner Apr 1, 2026 +2
Jesus. Russia and the US are sounding eerily similar in their demands/time durations. Wonder what George Lucas would say about these two.

Maybe he'd be inspired to create some big imperialist kind of bad guy with superior numbers who try to wipe out brave resistance fighters but fail against all odds. That would be interesting!

These kind of bizarre demands are good, I like to hear them. If all was going swimmingly they would just go about their business, it suggests that cracks are appearing

jay6432 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Sounds like russia is concerned about fighting throughout the spring, summer, and fall months of they’re making demands at this time of year

Honestly - I'm just tired of all of it. Two asshats are arguing about who will have an exclusive opportunity to waste a crapload of money rebuilding ruins. I don't care about all of it. I just want to go home. "A plague on both your houses!"

Well, they can demand whatever they want. I could - right now - demand ownership of Saturn. That doesn't obligate anybody else to go along with my idiotic bullshit.

Or the negotiations term be much worst for Ukraine. Without USA full help Ukraine can't continue the war, the conflict with Iran and price of oil make situation much worse for Ukraine survival
1
xavandetjer Apr 1, 2026 +1
They have been without us help for a long time now, the situation for them on the front line is much better now than it has been in years.

jarod1701 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Ukraine better hope this whole conflict isn‘t going to turn into a full blown war.

Are these all paid bots or what? What kind of verbal diarrhea is this? Giving up a piece of lifeless territory for peace — no way! But hunting people down across the entire country and sending them to die for nothing — sure, that’s fine. All while stroking your ego and continuing to siphon off EU money. Great. In Russia, aside from border regions, most people don’t really feel the war, to be honest — no one is being forced to fight. But go on, keep clinging to your illusions. The real question isn’t how long Russia will last, but when Ukraine will run out — and it will happen sooner, even with all the “partners’” support.

My guess is it's a subtle threat to use battlefield tactical nuclear missiles, but i'm not sure anyone buys that. Even China would have a fit if they did that.

TenebrisTortune Apr 1, 2026 -2
And where Russia wrong. All the time tried to negotiate and make Ukraine understand that Donetks and Lugansk wants to be part of Russia and they got officially recognized as such, but no, Ukraine actively tries force their narrative. Ukraine actively tries do terrorist attacks and in Ukraine they forcefully kidnap and send to war men, now they want draft women and prepare 14 year old for that. Not forgetting they support terroristic Israel in other east conflict. And people call Russia bad guy

this decision must be made by Ukrainian people, but unfortunately nobody will ask them
