And it's giving Iran coordinates of American targets so they can kill Americans. And in thankful recognition of this, Mr Trump lifts sanctions on Russian oil and gas exports...
97
gayphilantropist 6 days ago +8
He's being reactionary to surging oil prices, hopefully though, Russia's aide hurts his ego enough to where he proxies against them via Ukraine.
8
WhitePawn00 5 days ago +3
Nah for one thing he hates zelensky too much. For another, if he ever gets suspicious of Russian aid to Iran he'll just call Putin who will say "I promise we're not" and that'll be that.

It would be crazy for Russia and China not to arm Iran. Especially for Russia, which magically benefits from the leniency of Trump.

As a net exporter, Russia actively wants oil to be expensive, and thus for the Gulf situation to degrade further.

Absolutely true. Russia's economy is very dependent on oil export revenue. Russia has been described as "a gas station with nukes."

Also they want to negotiate as a position of equals with the US. They would love nothing more than to strike a "deal" where the US cuts off all weapons sales destined to Ukraine and refuses to share intel with Ukraine in exchange for Russia cutting off weapons to Iran and not sharing intel with Iran.
31
MercantileReptile 6 days ago +9
No deal needed for that. Finland announced an audit of sold weapon deliveries, paid for by europe. As some doubt has arisen, whether or not those purchases actually got delivered. Meanwhile europe (particularly France) are trying to replicate US intel in the region as well, due to similar concerns. There is no deal to be had any more, Trump's US has neglected Ukraine far too much already.

Indeed. Their Iranian allies getting pummelled has way more benefits than disadvantages for them.

I‘m not so sure about China actually. An open and free Iran that is not aching under a sanction economy and a massively corrupt regime would be trading like crazy with China. Like, half the country would be driving Chinese EVs, they‘d build giant solar farms with Chinese panels and tech etc. China is somclose to the country, they could easily project some serious soft power through trade in a free Iran imo.
57
elreyadr0k 6 days ago +79
My vibe is that China has no desire to interrupt (or get involved in) its enemies (or, say “competitors”) while they are making mistakes. Having the US and Russia bogged down in war is only to China’s benefit atm.
79
socialistrob 6 days ago +33
Especially when the US is now diverting years worth of weapons from the Pacific theater to be used in Iran. Also Trump is openly questioning NATO again which makes the US seem even more unreliable as an ally. Both of those things strengthen China's negotiating hand in the Indo-Pacific even if they don't actually go to war.
33
round-earth-theory 6 days ago +5
Was it ever years worth of munitions if we were able to blow through them in a few weeks? Either the number of munitions needed are extremely underestimated or our military f****** sucks at using it's own damn weapons. It's not like China would be an easier opponent than Iran.
5
socialistrob 5 days ago +4
To clarify it was years worth of production for certain systems like patriot interceptors. I would say that the US underestimated how important air defense would be and just assumed that they would only need interceptors for the first few days as after that point the theory was that the US would be able to prevent Iran (or any enemy country) from launching strikes through air supremacy. The fact that over a month in Iran is still launching missiles while interceptor supplies are running low and the US is losing planes means that this doctrine has failed or (best case scenario) is incomplete. If the US learns the right lessons they could potentially come away stronger although given that these exact same lessons were clearly demonstrated with Ukraine-Russia it shouldn't have been necessary for the US to go to war to learn these things.

In the meantime weakening the US means weakening South Korea, Taiwan and Japan, and those objectives are probably more important for China than Iran, even if I wholly agree that they would benefit enormously from an Iran without economic sanctions.
22
Wyciorek 6 days ago +11
> An open and free Iran that is not aching under a sanction economy and a massively corrupt regime would be trading like crazy with China. This is not in the cards. Israel wants an ongoing humanitarian disaster not a functioning country. US wants to have full control over Iranian resources, economy and foreign policy.
11
looshcollector 6 days ago +4
Russia want a north-south trade corridor through Iran too. I don't buy the idea that they want the Persian Gulf to be a conflict zone to drive up oil prices. They want to be able to do business and bypass sanctions.
4
Capable_Kiwi2514 6 days ago +4
There's no path to that Iran, so the geopolitik solution would be to arm them.
4
Careful-Trade-9666 6 days ago +2
China sits out war. China pleas for war to end. War ends, China rolls in with aid and infrastructure assistance. China wins war by proxy.
2
Man_under_Bridge420 6 days ago +6
Russia needs those missiles though
6
DaemonPrinceOfCorn 6 days ago +18
Two counterpoints. 1. It’s not like Russia is just a handful of missiles away from victory in Ukraine. They can absolutely spare them. 2. One missile in Iran means a dozen interceptors needed in a dozen Middle East countries (because they all have to have their own sovereign shootdown capability). That means interceptors taken from Ukraine (or not made available to Ukraine when they otherwise would have been). The more missiles Iran gets, the fewer interceptors Ukraine gets, the more hits Russia gets with their remaining missiles.
18
BetSquare7190 6 days ago +8
Absolutely. But having switched to a war economy for almost 4 years now mean they probably can afford to divert some, if it helps them overall.

Chinese and Russian interests diverge ... China profits from global stability, while Russia profits from chaos. This is one of the fundamental reasons for the rift between Xi Jinping and purged top general Zhang Youxia. Zhang was arguing that strong alliance with Russia and global destabilisation hurts China while Xi wants to use it to cement his own power.
18
socialistrob 6 days ago +12
People hate nuance but I think the correct view is that there is an alliance of sorts between Russia and China but it's a weak alliance where each side is prioritizing their own needs first. It would be INCREDIBLY helpful to Russia if China started providing Russia with heavy weapons and using Chinese manufacturing to crank out weapons for Russia but they're not doing that. Similarly Putin didn't bother to tell Xi about the invasion ahead of time and the invasion caused trade disruptions which hurt China and resulted in the US and Pacific nations revitalizing their military industrial base which China also wasn't thrilled at. They're not "best friends" but they're certainly not "enemies" either. I'd say they're reluctant allies that have some mutual interests but aren't that concerned with helping each other.
12
trisul-108 6 days ago +8
>but it's a weak alliance where each side is prioritizing their own needs first Yes, absolutely. It is more tactical than strategic. And Russian ideologues like Dugin envision the fall of China and says: The People's Republic of China, which represents an extreme geopolitical danger as an ideological enemy to the independent Russian Federation, "must, to the maximum degree possible, be dismantled".
8
Nolenag 6 days ago +6
Shooting down US jets and depleting its stock of interceptors is very beneficial to China.

China will not give missiles to Iran, no idea what kind of geopolitical bong you smoking. They don't even help Russia with military supplies, and that would be much easer to hide and deny. Delivering shit explictly to shoot down US planes would be incredibly stupid. The only thing worse would be delivering anti-ship missiles. US proved several times than they can violate Iranian airspace with impunity, and Israel have agents in every structure. If any kind of modern gear will get into Iran, it would be identified and stolen for research immedeatly. Trump may like Putin, but he have no good feelings for Xi.
19
TheThanatosGambit 6 days ago +4
China supplies Russia with the microchips that Russia uses to manufacture drones for both itself and, now, Iran. 90% of the critical electronics Russia needs to manufacture missiles and drones are imported from China. With some drone variants, particularly their decoy drones, being 100% Chinese. This is confirmed fact, not speculation.  In other words, you have no idea what you're talking about.
4
letir_ 5 days ago +3

3
CipherWeaver 6 days ago +6
China probably wants to see what their weapons do in real war scenarios. Unfortunately if the USA takes hits from them and has evidence, it would be politically unsavory. Most likely China just stays away from this entirely, they benefit no matter the outcome.

There is no proof to this - I say this as someone from the UK who has watched EU leaders standby and let things go for years and years. Let's not forget, the real genesis of this was Russia taking Crimea - Trump wasn't in charge then, it was Obama. There is very rarely a single source of a problem, when it is as complex and challenging as this

> Let's not forget, the real genesis of this was Russia taking Crimea - Trump wasn't in charge then, it was Obama. I agree with this, but people who hate Trump - tend to idolize Obama.
2
Thegreatbrainrobbery 6 days ago +5
I think it's less idolised, more romanticised his comparable uneventful term. The Democrats are the status quo but certain elements within the Democrats are the vector for radical change if they can get a supermajority (i.e Bernie Sanders, AOC, Mamdani). The Republicans in comparison are full on mask off far right lunacy now.
5
Fit-Implement-8151 6 days ago +13
I hear this all the time and I've never seen it. Y'all make it like Democrats are walking around with "I love Obama!" Tee shirts or something. No. No one cares about Obama and even when in office he was far from worshiped. Most sane Americans hate their politicians. It's kind of the whole point of being an American. Not trusting politicians and government and wanting them to f*** off. No. No. There is only one group who idolizes figurehead politicians. And we all know who they are. They're broadcasting it.

Must feel amazing for Russia. With only 1.3M casualties after 4 years they control less ground than after the first month. Their navy also was able to defend itself for quite some time against a country without a navy. Also losing only half of your refineries is amazing. They even lost more jets than the US did in the last few days. Even a transport aircraft with 29 special forces on board. The only difference to the US is that the US is flying 1000s of missions nonstop deep inside Iran and Russia is doing f*** all and still losing aircraft. Russia is outplaying everyone. Playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.

Alternate headline; US is arming Ukraine with missiles capable of hitting Russia.
8
Russianbias12 6 days ago +13
Alternate headline - US is arming Ukraine in response to Russian aggression spanning decades. Russia was well over the line in terms of geopolitical normality and peacefulness before their invasion of UKR. Every 'US missile that threatens' RU is deserved and in need of more. Ten fold more. Russia put bounties on US troops, they funded and facilitated the Red Sea debacle via the Houthi's, they had their hand in supplying and training Hezbollah, directly attacked the US at Khasham in Syria around '18, assassinated a man in London with a chemical/biological agent among a litany of other offenses. Russia is a victim of no ones 'aggression' other than their own.

Republicans are so f****** stupid. Aligning themselves with Russia put them in this incredibly dubious situation where they are simultaneously acting for and against their own interests, and I don't think they have the slightest f****** clue. They do the same thing domestically. It's just incredible. For practically half the population (of the United States) to be like this is proof enough, to me, that the human race is nowhere near as intelligent as we generally think we are. We are LLM's with emotionally driven egos. That's it.

Most humans are actually much worse than LLMs, because they're incapable of the simple "you're right - I made a mistake [...]"
4
heathbar24 6 days ago +8
I actually believe the Republicans are incredibly smart and intelligent. The reason is because in almost every major decision they’ve made, they knew PERFECTLY how to choose the wrong path, every single time. They know how to play the forest fire side of the story while Democrats know how to choose the right path to grow the forest back before the next forest fire comes back around. They are indeed so f****** stupid. But it’s also like they are intelligently acting stupid (which allows them to get this far in holding power in America). It’s to the point now where when someone finally gets the power they want, they can finally start to act f****** stupid without the intelligence and effort they used to have growing up. So now you have people in power like JD Vance, Elon, etc. So once a person acts in a bad way or acts stupid, but is somehow rewarded for their actions/behavior or even given more power, they will never see the other side of the story ever again. They’ll either see the forest as a way to start fires or plant more trees and grow it back. Now we have billions of people on each side of the story that can only see the world as a place to start forest fires wherever there is growth and people that see the world as a place to start new growth wherever there are fires. Even if we could somehow magically put all the republicans perfectly on their own Earth, and then put the Democrats on their own Earth with a few million miles between them, I feel that Republicans would STILL be tempted to start a forest fire on the democratic planet and then the other side would try to fix something on the republican planet, thus perpetuating this never ending conflict between humans working together in a single or multi planetary system.

The headline is pretty misleading. The missiles in the article are air to air or air to ground and are part of a deal for the SU platform. This means nothing for the conflict since Iran won’t be able to get a plane in the air for more than 3 seconds. Maybe this would be an issue during another conflict in the future.

Which has nothing to do with this article or what it is talking about. The headline is just completely misleading. The article is literally about the transfer of aircraft and their components. Just so I’m clear on this: The US is fighting Iran. Iran is being supplied with weapons and Intel by Russia. Russia is, at least partially, getting info from very high ranking US officials. So… the US is supplying Intel for attacking the US.

Something tells me that certain parties ( *cough* Russia *cough* China *cough* ), and even Trumpists themselves, want to turn Iran into a Ukraine situation for the US.

Each and every day Republicans ignore this is another complacent day. Also Dems (not AIPAC) need to remind them how bad they were.
