They may got by it but it's a not a formal/common dimminutive.
Dimmunitives are not nicknames and are more standardized.
2
sevksytimeApr 2, 2026
+1
I think you’re confusing what diminutives are. They are usually to denote smallness or cuteness not just a short form of a name.
1
godisanelectricoliveApr 3, 2026
+6
Russian names have standardized diminutives though and that is what linguists call those short forms. They usually have a suffix at the end like “-va” or “-ka” or “-chka”to make it “cute”. It’s to express a degree of affection and is used by friends or family.
Vladimir is Volodya or Vova at least in Russia. You can make Vova “cutesier”by saying “Vovka” or Vovochka”. It’s different in other Eastern European and Slavic countries but in Russia Vladimir is never Vlad. In Russian, not necessarily other Slavic language and certainly not non-Slavic Eastern European languages, “Vlad” is always Vladislav.
Vladislav is actually the same name as the Hungarian name Laszlo. That’s because the Laszlo was derived from the West Slavic variant Ladislav.
6
sevksytimeApr 3, 2026

That must be it. None of my friends are Russian, so that makes sense. I’ve never in my life heard Vova. My Bulgarian, Romanian, Hungarian, Polish friends are always “Vlad”.

I always see the Putin b**** comments but no one talks about their Alaska meeting last April. No one else thinks Trump and Putin worked out a deal on a bunch of these current happenings? European leaders got Manila envelopes in regard to some of the discussion. NATO & Trump have been even more at odds since that meeting last year. IMO Putin and Trump struck back room deals aligning Russia and USA interests specifically for oil and rare earth minerals for chips. Russias war in Ukraine is for the cobalt, in the ground, so Russia has its own semiconductor industry. Pretty crazy that with Hormuz closer the two countries benefitting the most happen to be Russia and the USA for LNG and crude oil exports. Don't even get me started on the US Russian trade deal. Rumored to be worth about 20T over the next 50-100 years. It divys up lands aka Venezuela, Ukraine, Cuba etc . Meanwhile this potential deal has quietly been going through. Never in my life did I think the US and Russia were closed door allies but in 2026 it's looking more and more likely
60
Over-Willingness-933Apr 2, 2026
+16
You may well be right. Trump probably does not care about Homouz being shut because the US does not get oil from there and it just pushes up the value of US and Venezuelan oil. Trump probably does not want Ukraine in the EU it makes it more powerful. I do want to stress though, hopefully there might be a nice byproduct of this, Europe starts spending on defence and the Middle East is more stable with Iran not funding chaos.

Makes sense because Europe now has to buy oil somewhere…
I know Italy already had to make new deals with Algeria regarding LNG cut from Qatar, I’ve read Belgium got cut aswell or was about to get cut, more country’s on the list but I don’t remember. Force majeur.
The thing is this whole energy blow might backfire because it can force Europe to go full on renewables.
It’s kinda hard to believe still.
Golf countries cannot export as well, huge hit on them too.
Asia probably the one that got hit the hardest.
So you get this Israel-us-iran war, attacking China at the same time while Europe being colateral damage…
For sure in the history books
2
FratStarWorldWideApr 2, 2026
+1
The whole thing makes Russia and the US the largest exporters in the world with Venezuela who's now controlled and a US vassal. The longer the conflict drags on the more this will benefit both too. I don't see the conflict ending anytime soon. My worry is global destabilization as price rise everywhere for goods. The United States will just feel that pain the least. The problem with Europe switching to EVs is the enormous amount of power grid updates that are needed. Estimated are grids need 10-20x the loads they can currently handle to be stable on an all Ev future. Those kind of energy investments take decades to make and complete. Even if Europe wanted to switch it's going to take decades of exploitation of the oil run world. Then don't even get me started with Cyan and lithium mining operations in Africa. Oil is evil but they don't use child labor. Go look at the videos of children barefoot and gloveless handling cobalt and cyan with their bare hands. Those kids are going to literally die of cancer that shits so toxic. EVs are just as evil as Oil. We need to drop the charade that it's some great clean industry it's not.

IMHO the current world has been divided into west and east alliances.
In the west alliance you can see Europe, Israel and of course USA.
In the east alliance you can find countries like Russia, China, India etc.
The USA attacks on Venezuela and Iran were not random but had a major impact on the oil transfers especially for China and Russia. Also let's not forget that Putin had done some serious threats against USA 6 months ago when USA first threatened Iran (Fortunately we stayed at threats).
It's also worth noting that the current situation in Ukraine has nothing to do with "good and bad people" but its all about gaining control over a very important area.
TLDR people talk like Trumps a crazy idiot forgetting of course that Trump has some huge companies and their profit privileges behind him. It's not about ethics - it's about profits and USA and Russia have some huge conflicting interests behind them which is why they ll never be friends.

Homie sorry to break it to you but Russia and the United States look more and more like each other every year. Large LNg and Crude oil exporters. With vast lands. Each has a president, who is elected. However both countries are oligarchy's. Russias is much more in the open, the United States is not a democracy anymore. It's an oligarchy, the people don't matter, whoever can lobby for the most money gets what they want. The people's best interests come last. They are almost mirror images now. People tend to forget that the US and Russia have been historically allies through the states entire existence besides the Cold War. The US does not pose the same threat a neighboring China does to Russia. 🤷♂️
9
Drafter1991Apr 2, 2026
+1
They re indeed mirror images but then again this didn't happen cause of Trump being in the power, they re mirror images cause they ve got to follow the capitalism rules (as well as every other capitalist country as well).
That doesn't mean that they don't have economical conflicts. For ex again the current war in Ucraine is not a war between Russia and Ucraine but rather a war between Russia and the American-Europe alliance who fight over control and profit with 0 ethics about the human lives over there.
If US was less of a threat than China Putin would have no problem to place Ukraine into NATO or the European union as long as he believed that the Russian capitalists would benefit from it. And while the Russian Chinese alliance is more fragile than the west alliances that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Russia probably is doing this just for that reason alone. If US stops their ship and creates a diplomatic crisis what do they lose, at most a hundred million dollars maybe a bit more if a ship costs more than I am assuming. But they gain very effective PR material, they can sell to their own population how they are not in war with just Ukraine but US as well. They can also say internationally look we are trying to help a country suffering a crisis and US is stopping us for their imperialistic reasons.
If US does not stop it, they now have postured to the world they do not fear US, Russia can be an ally to your country etc. This is why establishing a blockade like this is quite stupid. It only forces Cuba to be in the spheres of influence of Russia or China. Even if Russia was not doing this, China probably would have done it too. Its not like other players in geopolitics will just be okay with US trying to annex/force surrender Cuba.

What if it’s not oil and they’re actually smuggling in WMDs to Cuba to inevitably force a stalemate between Russia and the US?

So Russian oil is sanctioned right. So Donald trump starves a country of oil and allows Russia to be its sole supplier. Effectively creating business for Russia when there should be done. All done by potus ! For free ! Wow how nice of him.

He has no standing to deny anything. Mexico and Cuba are sovereign and it’s not because he wants to deport all the Cubans from Florida that the US can legally blockade Cuba. Wtf. And no one says much because the vengeful idiot just starts another incident.

Ukraine will hopefully implement more kinetic sanctions on that Russian oil.
Free Cuba, but not by funding Putins war machine.

Does anybody know if the oil is being sold to Cuba or given away as aid?

Trump probably doesn't mind Cuba getting more oil because he plans to take over Cuba's oil soon haha

Cuba lost a historical opportunity not unifying with Venezuela back in Hugo Chavez era. Now, they are in need of the most crucial resource.

Untrue. The more sanctioned the country is, the worse it gets as you start shutting down the few things they have left.

Well the US has boarded Russian tankers in international waters before.
2
GeneralSpoonApr 2, 2026
Not saying it definitely happened or anything, but...Mexico City does not have the ability to e***** tankers with nuclear submarines. It's an option that Moscow has available.

What happens if Russia send it, and say... Europe just destroy it before it reaches harbour.
Russia will obviously be annoyed, so will Cuba... But would anyone else be a angry about that?

Uh. It's an oil tanker. Think of the f****** environment for once.
4
MaxMouseOCXApr 2, 2026

Yes, I know it's an oil tanker, and I'm aware of the damage to the environment, that's not what I was wondering about though - I was trying to think through the purely geopolitical fallout (if any) for this scenario.
A thought experiment.
-2
deja_vu_1548Apr 2, 2026

Yes, I would personally be angry about it. I would imagine every country in the Gulf of America would be, too.
-5
MaxMouseOCXApr 2, 2026
Look, it's a hypothetical... Ignore the environmental issue, that's not what I was exploring.

I’m calling it. At some point trump minds and missles one of these tankers off the coast of Florida. And we’ll be tired of winning.
