The ambassador's facial expression and general demeanour in that picture is one of the most uncomfortable I've seen in politics. Truly not a role I envy.

In 2011 Biden, while on a trip to Russia under then president Obama, told Putin, "I don't believe you have a soul," to which Putin replied, "we understand each other."

Biden traveled with Obama? I thought it was policy for the VP to remain at the White House when the President is overseas.

You're right - I said "with" when I meant "under". Fixed

Jib is the triangular sail at the front of a ship. Its "cut" is the way its shaped and held. At distance sailors could identify the type of ship and nationality by this often before any other indicators. Its passed into common speech as not liking someones style or appearance when you first meet them.

In diplomatic talk, just quote one of their kind with commentary.
Pain and suffering are always inevitable for a large intelligence and a deep heart, said Dostoevsky. How you manage it without the latters is just baffling.

Unironically tho I don’t think there is an equivalent of “go f*** urself” in Japanese lol.

In a high-context indirect language, it would probably be faint praise on something that implies general ineptitude.

There really isn't...
You could say something like, ロシア政府、黙れ。Russian government, shut up. Or ロシア政府、消えろ。Russian government, disappear (or get lost). Really not the same though.

Russia says: " The ambassador was also told that relations between Russia and Japan "have reached an all-time low."
Even lower than when Russia declared war on Japan in 1945?
Or when they were at war in 1904-05?

Technically Russia and Japan are legally still in war and in dispute over Kuril islands.

It's truly shameful that countries still have embassies in Russia after what they did in Ukraine. Every country should have broken relations with Russia and removed their ambassadors.

I think this is a miscalculated diplomatic reaction from Russia that will only push Japan further towards rearming and trying to project more power, especially towards Russia. Unless it’s for the standard Russian goal of destabilization..

Russia is a major source for Japan's Natural gas and Oil...Japan was already punished by Russia previously for putting sanctions on Russia by having their investments in the Russian energy extraction sector be nationalized.
Depriving japan of its cheapest source for gas and oil.
Russia could in theory punish Japan in the same way it punished Finland and Germany by just stopping all exports.

Wanna hear a funny story? Japan is technically in a war with Russia. USSR never signed US made peace treaty ending WW2 between allies and Japan, so tchnically just a truce.

Well, technically Russia and Japan never signed a peace treaty after WW2, so why Putin is surprised when Japan is helping the enemy of their enemy?
