Ukraine is already supplying rounds like these to their soldiers. The rounds are new and the goal right now is a magazine per soldier.

Far more practical to carry a standard weapon and load in a magazine of anti drone rounds when needed. Making the gun more complex and therefore less reliably is not a good idea.

BasicMatter7339 Apr 11, 2026 +7
How the hell would that even work? Reciever with two mag inserts? Or a double barrel AK?

joelfarris Apr 11, 2026 +6
_KelTec Weapons has picked up their beer and entered the chat_ Seriously though, there's a pretty good recent YouTube video from a channel called Garand Thumb that shows some new multi-shot weapons in action, and also just how difficult it is to shoot down a small drone that's moving at you in a ziggy pattern and faster than 100 MPH.

ShepardRTC Apr 12, 2026 +3
There’s a new round called the Drone Round that is fully compatible with 5.56. No changes needed, fires out of any AR. Seems to work well, but not available to the public at the moment.

Technically we do. They fall under the rather wide umbrella of smart rifles. Most "smart" innovations for rifles are terrible compared to a well-trained brain, though. The closest thing to the Titanfall gun would probably be the [TrackingPoint XS1.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TrackingPoint) Yes it's real I know that looks fake af.

I did not expect to see a vulnerabilities section on a rifle, but here we are.
11
bitknight1 Apr 11, 2026 +2
But that just changes where you shoot, bullet still flies straight. Smart weapons in movies and games can changes where the bullet flies mid flight to even hit somebody behind you.

They tried that with the OICW and the rifle cost more than a family car so they scrapped it. Easier to just teach marksmanship I guess.

Dude's 100% a big time Turkish-Toupee choder. Channel used to be cool, till his ego and personality got in the way and scared off his crew (Micah & Charlie). They were the ones that actually made the channel peak and then experienced a sharp decline when they bounced.

Now I do live in a red state and everyone at my work wears maga merch so they are already dumb fucks but literally can't even talk to them about guns without them bringing me driving an ev into it or that I shouldn't hangout with their gun friends because they wouldn't be nice to me and that I would leave there crying apparently..

So basically AK-47 Rat Shot, gotcha. EDIT: before someone gets the wrong idea, Rat Shot is like Buck Shot or Bird Shot except the balls are smaller and the caliber is typically much small, like 22LR
15
Schrodinger_cube Apr 11, 2026 +3
Oh bringing back the old Flechette rounds eh? I do have a rifle round that shoots like this legally, its a .22 round that is a small buck shot like load for rat hunting or an expensive way to troll your buddy who doesn't check his ammo and gets mad missing 10 shots in a row XD.. So i wonder if its just a scaled up version of that rat shot?

2
GhostofBreadDragons Apr 11, 2026 +5
So here is question.  Is this just an excuse to make a flechette round that would normally be considered a war crime?  I would never want to accuse Russia of intentionally looking for ways to commit war crimes, but when the vodka fits.
5
dasreboot Apr 11, 2026 +12
How are flechettesca war crime?
12
xtremepado Apr 11, 2026 +33

33
hugelkult Apr 11, 2026 +8

8
CaptainAction Apr 11, 2026 +4
I think their need to shoot down drones is way greater than any cruel desire to use flechettes. The troops are terrified of those drones for good reason and they don’t have amazing tools for dealing with them

Because it would convert the automatics they already have into automatic shotguns. Even if it's inferior to a shotgun it would give soldiers something to work with. If you've seen the videos, you know most of their soldiers hide because normal kit is terrible for shooting at drones. FYI most of their rifles are 5.45 or 7.62 mm. 5.56 is NATO.
23
10YearsANoob Apr 11, 2026 +2
arent saigas just AKs but rebored to fire 12ga?
2
frozenpissglove Apr 11, 2026 +4
Yes but no. Mostly. That’s the gist of it. But an AK with rounds that act like a shotgun you get full auto fire that is relatively controllable, with a lot more rounds to get the job done.
4
tagillaslover Apr 11, 2026 +21
Because then you have to carry an additional piece of equipment just to shoot drones down. Also the other normal drawbacks of shotguns. They aren’t completely useless but it’s worth trying to find a better solution's
21
A_Poor_Miser Apr 11, 2026 -5
Snake shot. It's just snake shot.

0
DismalAd6639 Apr 11, 2026 +7
NATO also has drone rounds. The shotgun has many drawbacks
7
KopOut Apr 11, 2026 +2
I’ve seen videos of the drone attacks on infantry. Seems like if you don’t have the shotgun in your hand you wouldn’t have time to pull it out and fire. And if you are walking around with a shotgun you better not have to shoot at anything at any type of range. These drones are literally just flying bombs that move extremely fast and detonate on impact (with a human).
2
Extension_Quit_2190 Apr 11, 2026 +1
Infantry general from c&c generals zero hour
1
Equivalent-Resort-63 Apr 11, 2026 +1
So it’s just a small shotgun round with fewer pellets and somewhat longer range. Better have full auto on that to hit a fast moving object.
1
gradinaruvasile Apr 11, 2026 +3
Full auto with 30 rounds from a handheld assault rifle (mostly AKs) at small moving objects are not a winning combination. There were videos of ukrainians shooting down drones with this kind of ammo. They shot semi auto.

So maybe it's just more durable under fire
1
DTRite Apr 11, 2026 +2
Or just under flight. My drone's props have been replaced a few times...I'm not a great pilot, it's an old ones before they got better.

Rare_Appointment_604 Apr 11, 2026 +1

Dude I have a 1950s fan from my grandpa. With rubber fins. Google "vintage fan rubber fins" for picture. It sounds just like your regular fan, the fin material doesn't grant you any sound deadening.
1
Typingdude3 Apr 11, 2026 +1
Some of these drones have heat sensing cameras so they can attack at night. Can’t shoot at a drone in the dark.
1
Admiral_Dildozer Apr 11, 2026 +1
I’m not saying all troops on the frontline in Ukraine have night vision. But if anyone is going to have or need night vision it’s the troops on the frontline in Ukraine. Men on the ground often see and hear the drones long before they strike. The issue is killing the drone before it flys into your formation at 70mph and explodes.
1
xX609s-hartXx Apr 11, 2026
Oh shit, I hear a drone! Let me just change magazines here... rick-click-cl-BAMM!
0
rapzeh Apr 11, 2026 +3
I think it makes sense for isr drones first of all, where you aren't even attacked. Also, at this point it probably makes more sense to default on this ammonand switch to normal ammo in case you encounter enemy infantry, whis is less of a risk and also allows more reaction time
3
BasicMatter7339 Apr 11, 2026 -5
Ak-47s haven't been manufactured since the 50s lmao
-5
Admiral_Dildozer Apr 11, 2026 +1
Russia (obviously) but also Bulgaria, Poland, and Serbia have domestic arms companies that produce AK’s. Even the U.S. has a domestic producer. Granted they’re not exactly the same 50’s models but the changes are minor and it’s still pretty much the same AK. There are several examples of gun designs 100 years old or older currently being used by modern militaries. A good gun is a good gun.
1
BasicMatter7339 Apr 11, 2026 +1
They don't produce '47s though Serbians produce the Zastava M70, Bulgaria the AR-M1, Poland makes the FB beryl. Sure, all AK's but none of them are '47s
1
Admiral_Dildozer Apr 11, 2026 +1
Yeah you’re right. They’re not 47’s and I didn’t really focus on that part. They’re all modern or country specific variants.
1
BasicMatter7339 Apr 11, 2026 +1
Yeah thats my exact gripe with the headline because there are no ak-47 manufacturers anywhere anymore as their production stopped in 1959. Not even north korea makes their ak-47 clones anymore.

-1
crazedizzled Apr 11, 2026 -1
I don't understand why they don't just have undermounted shotguns. Or just carry a shotgun. Assuming you saw it coming, shooting a drone with a shotgun should be ezpz.
-1
Hondamousse Apr 11, 2026 +3
Because carrying a second long gun and rounds for it is expensive, and heavy, and shotguns have a more limited magazine capacity. Underbarrel shotguns have awful range, and even more limited capacity. Drones are way faster than you’re imagining in this scenario. Having 30 rounds to try and take one down at a better range and higher muzzle velocity is ultimately why this is the better option.
3
crazedizzled Apr 11, 2026
Hitting a small fast moving target with a rifle bullet is infinitely more difficult than with a shotgun. It's not like shotguns in war are weird. The US used the shit out of shotguns in Iraq. I'd for damn sure rather carry around an extra 10 pounds if it gave me some amount of hope against a drone.
0
Hondamousse Apr 11, 2026 +1
Right, which is why these particular rounds are similar to shotgun pellets, just… “different”. There are multiple projectiles. The 556 versions of these have a muzzle velocity of around 3000 fps, shotguns are around 1200 with birdshot.
1
Suspicious_Safe7647 Apr 11, 2026 -13
Oh yes I read about this. The Anti-Robot Bullets. They are called EDPs \[Electronically Disruptive Projectiles \]. I don't known how they work, but I do think its interesting were developing ammunition designed for electronics. This is probably gonna come off dark humor as hell but here If people cant even shoot each other and just start shooting each other's toys doesn't that mean war is literally pointless? Ironically there is more respect in blood spilt and lost then whatever this is turning into. And as usual it will likely be used against some country that can hardly even hold a house together.
