Great news. NATO allies pledge 60 billion dollars ON TOP OF the EUs 90 billion euro loan for Ukraine in 2026 https://www.kyivpost.com/post/74017

Uhhh_what555476384 3 days ago +39
For context the ENTIRE Ukrainian national budget for 2021 was between 33B to 34B Euros.  So the Europeans just pledged funding for 5 years of pre-war Ukrainian total spending and 66% of the 2021 total Russian national budget. That amount of money if delivered should either (1) last Ukraine through 5-7 years of war expenditures, or (2) allow Ukraine to do MASSIVE crash production programs comparable to major combatants like the US did during WWII. That's before accounting for Ukraine's own revenues.
39
Mazon_Del 3 days ago +5
While definitely an amazing contribution, it's worth noting that some amount of that money isn't for normal budget items for the country or defense spending, but economic stimulus to support industries in Ukraine that are having trouble due to the war. It's better for Europe's economy as a whole for Ukraine's to be as stable as possible, so they are definitely getting something out of it (not to mention it's hard for Ukraine to fight a war if their economy implodes). So this money won't actually last 5-7 years, but it's still a huge deal.
5
Uhhh_what555476384 3 days ago +4
I imagine that it's intended to be spent over 2-3 years with a number of crash industrial programs across Ukraine and the EU. Russia really doesn't look like they have 2-3 more years of fighting in them. (Edit: This is an amazing sum of money for Ukraine and a somewhat trivial amount of money for the collective EU; this is why you don't f\* with the BIG economies when they're willing to express their collective will). (Edit #2: Just quick google mathing with AI answers, so grain of salt. EU GDP 18T Euros. Average Gov. expenditures across the EU 49% of GDP so apx 9T Euros. 90B EUs is 1% of the collective government expenditures per annum by the EU governments. That's basically a rounding error to the EU collectively.)
4
Mazon_Del 3 days ago +4
Oh definitely, the EU can easily support this level of expenditure for as long as needed, while russia meanwhile has record high bankruptcies going on for both businesses and individuals.
4
hornswoggled111 3 days ago +18
Ukraine will be supporting the middle east for the next decade as well. Russia has created a monster on its border. And they bloody deserve it.
18
Remarkable_Beach_545 3 days ago +21
That's great context, thank you! I assume that alot of that will be spent within Europe and NATO for weaponry, armor, spinning up joint production in Ukraine and elsewhere etc. So good for both sides on many levels.
21
Uhhh_what555476384 3 days ago +5
This is really the EU getting into this fight in a BIG way. From the beginning there were people pointing out on this board that the EU had the financial resources to break the Russians. The EU is a comperable economy, collectively, to the US or China but with much less military spending. If they just sent 4%-5% of their collective budgets to Ukraine there would be no way the Russians could keep up. The Russians have an economy the size of Canada but with 3x the people. With Orban gone and Trump f\*ing up the US's position in the western alliance, the Europeans are really lifting all the stops.

Their budget looks at risk of severe failure, so they probably want to borrow more now just in case. > Despite owning the banks + huge repo that specifically rewards these bonds, they're paying higher rates. 14.7-14.9%. Ouch. They did an "additional placement", meaning they wanted more cash, and rates stayed pretty high. They're locking in lots of long-term expenses here. https://bsky.app/profile/leoskyview.bsky.social/post/3mjk75gotmc2e

That was an informative read, thank you! "Given the significant weakening of forces in the 51st Combined Arms Army’s direction, Russia’s plans to capture Dobropillia and its operational-strategic plans to encircle and surround the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk-Kostiantynivka agglomeration are not feasible." Love to hear that

All they have to do is go back home. Though I can see why many in Russia don't want their armed services coming back.

The Russian economy is done for, it can't drastically increase drone production. Ukraine and Europe will eventually outproduce Russia. The war will change significantly when Ukraine starts launching 2-3x times more drones than the invader.

>Zelensky just out with a long comment after the latest Ramstein meeting. Optimistic and gives thanks to many partners. Not a single mention of the US helping Ukraine. The Ukrainians are not hiding the fact that the US is no longer their friend. Zelensky kept up the pretense for a while, acting like Trump sought peace despite seeing the pro-Russia shift. The change suggests not only no faith in the US, but also that they don’t need to keep up the show for Europe anymore. Being betrayed in your time of greatest need tends to stick in the memory. I would assume that most of the Biden era shipments have either arrived or been cancelled and they have found alternatives for what little US assistance still exists. Zelensky's need to be polite to the US will only reduce over time. It is also in Europe's interest to rebuild their military industries now that the US cannot be trusted, and Ukraine is a good motivation to ramp up production and test new systems.

Good. Everyone should be calling out the US for being the worst partner possible. Crazy how they are just so easily handing decades of soft power away. Insanely sad and frustrating to watch.

Trump is weak right now, he made the US irrelevant. Ukraine and Europe will decide the outcome of the war.

Though I'm enjoying the impact on Russia as America screws with its friends. Venezuela, Cuba, then Iran. Syria could be thrown in as well. I'm hoping America is going to rise from the ashes after Trump finishes burning off the taste for ugly politics. My compassion goes out to all those that are effectively hostages in the mentioned countries.

Per Bloomberg, the U.S. is not renewing waivers on Russian oil.  While I get that the war between the U.S., Israel, and Iran is complicated and the global economy is on the rocks, I think the discontinuation of the waivers is a good move. While temporary waivers on Russian oil might’ve briefly helped the oil market / global economy, it hurt everything with respect to the conflict in Ukraine and also incentivized Russia to prolong the conflict in the Middle East. These consequences ultimately made everything worse. While Russia is still likely interested in prolonged conflict everywhere, discontinuing the oil waivers might get them to think twice about a few things. It will at least put more strain on their war machine.

[Ukrainian forces pull back to prepared lines near Myropilske as Russia claims ground in three Sumy villages | EuroMaidanPress](https://euromaidanpress.com/2026/04/14/ukrainian-forces-pull-back-to-prepared-lines-near-myropilske-as-russia-claims-ground-in-three-sumy-villages/) > Ukrainian Defense Forces repositioned to new prepared lines near Myropilske, east of Sumy City, following sustained Russian pressure, Ukraine's 14th Army Corps reported on 13 April. "As a result of intense combat, the enemy's superiority in forces and means, units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, in order to preserve the lives of personnel, moved to new prepared lines, where they continue to hold defense," the corps stated. It added that Russian forces are being struck by "artillery units, unmanned systems units and other fire means," and that Ukrainian units "control the situation, conduct reconnaissance and are ready for further actions." > Open-source conflict tracker DeepState confirmed Russian advances near Myropilske, Maryine, and Novodmytrivka in Sumy district. A Russian milblogger separately claimed Russian forces had advanced into eastern Novodmytrivka, southeast of Sumy City, though the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) assessed the claim as unconfirmed. > Geolocated footage published 12 April showed Ukrainian forces striking Russian servicemembers east of Myropillya following what ISW assessed as an infiltration mission that "did not change the control of terrain or the forward edge of the battle area (FEBA) at this time." Russian forces also attacked north of Sumy City near Korchakivka, Kostiantynivka, and Kindrativka, and southeast of the city near Novodmytrivka and toward Taratutyne on April 12 and 13, according to ISW. A Russian milblogger claimed Ukrainian forces counterattacked near Mala Korchakivka and Myropilske. > Despite the tactical pressure, a Kremlin-affiliated milblogger warned on April 13 that Russian small-group infiltrators "are unable to control large areas of forest in northern Sumy Oblast due to frequent Ukrainian counterattacks," and that "it is premature to claim a near-term seizure of Krasnopillya," southeast of Sumy City. > ISW reported that elements of the Russian 15th Tank Regiment (69th Motorized Rifle Division, 6th Combined Arms Army, Leningrad Military District), the 34th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade (49th Combined Arms Army, Southern Military District), and the 74th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade (41st Combined Arms Army, Central Military District) are reportedly operating near Myropillya.

Russia is clamping down on social media and punishing sharing of images like this. I imagine one reason is so its population doesn't have a chance to see what is happening around the country. Less joy for me unfortunately as it has been a growing pleasure to watch the military components in Russia going up in smoke.
