They Quentin Tarantinoed him. 1994 all over again. This means Ryan Coogler has some amazing things to come.

It was a good story right up to the point where he ran out of ideas and went with ... "and then, and then... a monster comes!" You could have turned the script over to the nearest 8 year old to finish.

It was such good world building, mystery around the brothers and their time in Chicago, and great story lines with the ex-wife and girlfriend… just to be a vampire action movie

I mean vampires are sort of core to the themes of what the films is discussing. "The wealth that these oppressors posses is stained with blood" a key scene is the one where Hailie Steinfeld character leaves the juke joint to check about Remmick's money.  They also exploit/"drain" the life from their sharecroppers/workers much like vampires Also if you think this is a stretch, there was an interview on the press tour effectively about this where the interviewer called this out and Coogler all but confirmed it.

I like the vampire twist and the tonal shift at that point in the movie. The problem is the pacing and editing in the final act. They spent a bit too long having people frantically run around, Jack O'Connel's death is a bit of a let down, the KKK shows up having only been briefly mentioned before, ect

The entire third act feels incredibly rushed compared to the rest. Mind you, this entire film was done lightning fast, I think from the moment it was announced it took like a year, that includes post-production too. Blistering fast speed and it shows in some places.

THANK YOU. I thought I had accidentally streamed the wrong version of this thing or something.

I just don’t understand. I think someone literally needs to write an essay for me on why it is a good film. Clearly I missed out on some cultural aspect key to it. Like, I’m a white American and don’t like blues music, is it just “not for me?” The movie is stone cold boring as well and there isn’t a single character in it who I found even a shred likeable or interesting. After a literal hour of maybe the worst period piece I’ve ever tried to watch, it suddenly shifts to a passable vampire movie populated by the same terrible characters. Michale B Jordan was… not good. So again, is there something that I just don’t get because of my background? It truly does not make sense to me.

If you dont like blues and or understand the cultural undertones of the movie and don’t care to learn about it then why would anyone bother try to convince you to like it? If someone doesn’t like sauce on their pizza why would I bother convincing them to try sauce on their pizza?

Regardless of if you like those things it’s written blandly. It’s a fun watch! but I have no idea how it’s best screenplay

It’s okay man… some people just don’t understand culture.

My counterpoint is that I just finished watching Severance and I went “oh my god this is a show that every working American needs to watch.” It’s deep, incredibly well cast, well written, culturally important, you name it. I don’t see that at all for Sinners. So I don’t think it’s fair to say that I’m uncultured or don’t understand good media, I just fail to see why Sinners is good media. Therefore my question of whether I’m missing something. If you said “yeah Sinners is meant for X, Y, Z people and you aren’t one of those,” I would say “OK, I just don’t get it.” But if the argument is that it is universally culturally important, then I’m just baffled.

“I watched a show I directly related to and loved it but didn’t like this thing I can’t relate to at all.” Yeah man. That’s how it works. You’re obviously missing something and no one is going to be able to explain what that is. If you considered the first half “the most boring period piece” ever then our experiences are so far removed there is possibility for reconciliation

Like *nothing* happens in that first hour. Is it somehow edgy that background characters pick cotton? There’s barely even a racial tension to it. It’s not like it’s the color purple or to kill a mockingbird. There’s a very brief allusion to lynching by the older musician, about 10 seconds of a chain gang, and the tension of the mixed woman’s history with one of Jordan’s characters. If the answer is that it’s supposed to be some deep portrayal of racism in antebellum America, then I completely don’t understand how this movie allegedly was that.

Let it f****** go. You’re being such a huge loser here. You’re not going to change anyone’s opinion. No one is going to change yours. Just move the f*** on lol

Jesus I guess we can’t have conversations on the internet
1
MichaelMyersEatsDogs Mar 16, 2026 +7
That’s not a conversation. That’s a rant that no response can quell. No one on the world can convince you something you find boring actually isn’t. I find Lynch movies boring. Not for me. Thankfully I’m able to appreciate the quality of things I personally don’t enjoy, but nothing will make me enjoy them. And that’s ok.

I expressed an opinion, asked questions, and engaged in a back and forth. You got heated. It sounds like you don’t know how to have a conversation.

You are the millionth white dude this month who has done the “I don’t get sinners please explain what I’m missing” while using that question as an opportunity to shit on the movie over and over. It’s exhausting

Severance is a show that anyone with a job can relate to. Sinners is a movie of original artistry, tapestry of culture, and the connective tissue of music to transcend a world of violence.

I think it’s an alright movie with some redeeming qualities to it, but I found the ending derivative and boring. I also thought Jordan was okay in it, just not that compelling. So, while I don’t entirely agree, I lean more towards your opinion than those that heap praise on it.

MichaelMyersEatsDogs Mar 16, 2026 +4
Curious to what you think the ending was derived from

WTWIV Mar 16, 2026 +2
From Dusk Til Dawn
2
Shef011319 Mar 16, 2026 +3
Yeah, it rhymed a lot with from dusk till dawn. the whole time I was watching it I was like this isn’t one for one, but it’s real close.
3
MichaelMyersEatsDogs Mar 16, 2026 +3
lol those are not the same ending at all
3
WTWIV Mar 16, 2026 +1
Derivative doesn’t mean “the same” lol
1
VastFig965 Mar 16, 2026 +1
Wasn’t Sinners just a From Dusk Til Dawn remake?

SydneyBriarIsAlive Mar 16, 2026 +1
It pulls from it for sure, but it's not beholden to it. Ironically, it feels a lot like how QT pays homage to films he loves.
