The Wachowskis are trying to figure out how to tie it all into another meta "Matrix" movie.
15
gaqua Apr 3, 2026 +9
I thought the Wachowskis had no desire to do more “Matrix” stuff after #3 and it was only because WB said they were going to do it with or without them that Lana agreed to it at all?

1
darkszn_ Apr 2, 2026 +64
it has a $150 million budget so it's basically just a large-scale movie. spielberg had the same designation before *disclosure day* got titled.
64
Zoomalude Apr 3, 2026 +31
Jesus. Both excited at the Daniels getting a budget like that and terrified they'll lose what makes them them.
31
Dislodged_Puma Apr 2, 2026 +591
A "Daniels event" film refers to a project directed by the duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. EDIT: To stop people asking the same question over and over: They directed Everything Everywhere All at Once and Swiss Army Man. Other commenters are right that there is no term called "Daniels Event". It appears they refer to themselves as "Daniels" when working together since they are both named Daniel. And this is an Event picture for Universals, thus the name.
591
big_actually Apr 2, 2026 +189
The term "event picture" just means big tenpole picture. This is a major movie for Universal. So it's not a "Daniels event," it's an Event Picture from the Daniels. 'Daniels Event' is not a tagline/term.
189
QP709 Apr 3, 2026 +45
And a tenpole picture is really just a misspelling of a tentpole picture! It means a really big picture!
45
Blaaa5 Apr 3, 2026 +15
Yeah this isn’t like Nolan or Tarantino where every film is an event
15
AnotherNotion Apr 3, 2026 +1
They had one sleeper hit and one not-quite-cult hit. I've known them since their days directing Manchester Orchestra music videos, but they're at least one blockbuster releases away from being movie events.
1
WolfSpinach Apr 3, 2026 +1
If only we had some form of punctuation to denote possession. Maybe it could change position to indicate plural or singular. Ah well, a man can but dream
1
ikeif Apr 3, 2026 +1
No offense, but isn’t that the same thing? “A Daniels’ Event Picture” versus “an Event Picture by the Daniels”? It’s like “Mike’s bike” versus “the bike of Mike.” Or am I not grasping something, which seems possible.
1
SomeGuyNamedJason Apr 3, 2026 +1
Your confusion is because you see "A Daniels' Event Picture" as "A Daniels' Event-Picture" whereas people are misinterpreting it as "A Daniels'-Event Picture". To phrase it like your example, it's not "A Daniels' Event Picture" vs "an Event Picture by the Daniels," it's "Picture of/for the Daniels' Event" vs "an Event Picture by the Daniels."
1
-KFBR392 Apr 2, 2026 +72
So it’s like their version of “a Spike Lee joint”?
72
pnt510 Apr 3, 2026 +36
No, an event picture is just a placeholder term for a blockbuster film without an announced name/franchise.
36
Xijit Apr 3, 2026 -3
The fact that they have decided it will be a blockbuster before they have a name for it, tells you everything you need to know about Hollywood.
-3
Fallout-with-swords Apr 3, 2026 +20
Yeah I think the people actually making and financing the movie know what it is.
20
dtwhitecp Apr 3, 2026 +4
yeah it means "movie made by people who won Best Picture, so we expect it will also make a lot of money, because we are ignorant to how f****** weird their shit can be"
4
big_actually Apr 2, 2026 +35
No it is not...headline just means "big movie from the Daniels"
35
HenryDorsettCase47 Apr 3, 2026 +16
Exactly. But I get the confusion because this headline is a f****** word salad. Event pic is not a common term and the Daniels aren’t a household name. Hard to tell nowadays when a jumbled headline is just piss poor line editing or AI gobbledygook.
16
BobCFC Apr 3, 2026 +17
Deadline is a trade site like Variety or The Hollywood Reporter. Everyone reading is in the industry
17
Fallout-with-swords Apr 3, 2026 +2
Their last movie won best picture and they clearly got a big budget for whatever it is.
2
56Runningdogz Apr 2, 2026 +39
Thank you! Was so confused.
39
Fragrant-Hamster-325 Apr 2, 2026 +15
I’m still confused, is the film called “Pic at Universal”
15
thetalkingcure Apr 2, 2026 +13
no. a movie is a moving picture, shortened in the title to pic.
13
Thor_pool Apr 3, 2026 +16
No, you got it wrong. Theres a pic called "Ryan Gosling Exits Daniel Event" being released at Universal
16
FX114 Apr 3, 2026 +20
You're mixed up it's not a "Daniels Event" film, it's a Daniels "event film".
20
MovieGuyMike Apr 2, 2026 +16
What are they known for? Edit - everything everywhere all at once and Swiss army man.
16
2347564 Apr 2, 2026 +15
Everything Everywhere All At Once has been their biggest hit and they made Swiss Army Man before that.
15
Dislodged_Puma Apr 2, 2026 +15
They won a shit ton of awards for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
15
CommonSenseFunCtrl Apr 3, 2026 +6
They also did the Turn Down for What music video and a lesser known movie called The Death of D*** Long
6
MVRKHNTR Apr 3, 2026 +1
Only one of them made D*** Long. More people might be aware of their short film Interesting Ball.
1
Summoarpleaz Apr 3, 2026 +3
So maybe an apostrophe would have helped? Although all these terms in a tagline is unnecessarily confusing.
3
bunbohuehuehuehue Apr 2, 2026 +10
You're overthinking it, it just means that the movie's announcement, production, release etc. will be an "event" because of how highly anticipated it is. It's like how the Friends finale was considered "event viewing".
10
phaserlasertaserkat Apr 3, 2026 +5
Event Pic means large scale, high-budget blockbuster designed to be a cultural touchstone like Independence Day, MCU, etc. I can see why Gosling left the Daniels’ event pic given the huge success of Project Hail Mary which is the event pic of the year so far. Probably doesn’t want to repeat himself.
5
FX114 Apr 3, 2026 +16
A movie whose release is considered so big that it's an event. Avengers, Oppenheimer, Barbie, etc.
16
AMA_requester Apr 3, 2026 +3
Generally means the film is a prestige project for the studio. Big IP film or a big name director is doing it.
3
LineZestyclose1573 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Big budget movie with a huge marketing budget that lots of people that don’t usually go to the movies will know about
1
Smurflord345 Apr 2, 2026 +788
Sounds like they announced his casting before it was official. Probably to capitalize on the Hail Mary hype
788
skyturnedred Apr 3, 2026 +1
It was never confirmed, all the news about his casting were using phrasing like "set to star in", "eyeing his next project" etc. But yes, the "leaks" are meant to hype things up.
1
Ariesthebigram Apr 2, 2026 +750
Glen Powell, you are the new lead of the "Untitled Daniels Event Pic"!
750
bbqsauceboi Apr 2, 2026 +213
Powell is basically Temu brand Gosling already
213
RYouNotEntertained Apr 2, 2026 +158
Lmao why does Listnook hate Glen Powell?
158
KMoosetoe Apr 3, 2026 +64
He's Fox McCloud so he's cool again
64
KingMario05 Apr 3, 2026 +15
God, I hope he can brainwash Illumination into hiring better writers for the SF movie. The character was the coolest thing in the sequel despite the God awful script. *Imagine him with something good.*
15
MVIVN Apr 3, 2026 +1
Get Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to helm it and give us the Han Solo movie we never got when Disney fired them
1
zerocoolforschool Apr 3, 2026 +29
I don’t hate him but I also don’t think he’s really leading man material. He’s good as a supporting actor imo.
29
PongoWillHelpYou Apr 3, 2026 +1
Watching The Running Man really solidified this for me (granted, that movie had sooooo many issues. But still)
1
zerocoolforschool Apr 3, 2026 +1
Yeah he’s fine in Top Gun. But overall he just doesn’t have the stage presence to be a true leading man. I think it just shows how desperate Hollywood is for youngish male stars.
1
TheBobsBurgersMovie Apr 3, 2026 +89
He was in 2 new movies with a 3 month span at one point which is a no-no for listnookors unless you’re an actress and hot
89
RhythmsaDancer Apr 3, 2026 +15
OR, and hear me out, he's just not that good? He's fine. He can get through a scene. He won't break a scene. But that's about all I can say for him. His talent doesn't match his stardom.
15
zewayofjay Apr 3, 2026 +23
Have you watched Hitman?
23
siriuslycan Apr 3, 2026 +7
He kinda did the same schtick in running man and Todd powers
7
thrillhouse83 Apr 3, 2026 +2
And how to make a killing. Always doing dress up, this guy
2
RhythmsaDancer Apr 3, 2026 +3
Yes. Kind of a perfect example of how limited he is, imo. I don't have a problem with him. I just don't think he's good enough to be in so many conversations.
3
CosmicWy Apr 3, 2026 +1
he's the latest action guy and he's doing a decent job. I like doing runs of Oscar worthy films, but I also like a beer and a Glenn powell flick. or chris Hemsworth. or Statham, etc etc. he's not great, but neither are the movies he's in. they're popcorn movies and he's a popcorn actor. there's always gonna be a this two-to-three-year-span's Glenn powell. I'd rather him right now than say Gerard Butler. I have a sneaky suspicion he'll break into room coms soon enough (as all his movies kinda have that will they won't they angle) and if he sticks the landing, in a few years he'll jump to an out of place role (and if he crushes it) we'll retcon all of his early work gosling style.
1
Thugging_inPublic Apr 3, 2026 +27
Is it hate? He’s just clearly a tier below the Goslings of the world. He’s opened a ton of movies in the past 18 months to very little acclaim
27
bbqsauceboi Apr 3, 2026 +7
This. My comment wasn't meant to be for hate. Powell is cool, but he just seems like a lesser Gosling to me which is ok!
7
RYouNotEntertained Apr 3, 2026 +19
Yeah, listnook has a thing about him specifically.
19
chippyjoe Apr 3, 2026 +1
Nah, my friends aren't on Listnook and they constantly question how he gets work. My mom hates him, says he has a smug feel to him, specially his face. She's also not on listnook. Most of the films he's headlined have performed poorly or subpar so this tracks. If people outside listnook loved him then he would be a megastar.
1
Thugging_inPublic Apr 3, 2026 +3
Can't speak to what specifically you're talking about, but if it's criticism like him being a "temu gosling" then I think you're being sensitive. Harsh or not it's a fair thing to say.
3
Blursed_Pencil Apr 3, 2026 +3
Every single thread where anyone even offhandedly mentions him on Listnook, someone has to say he’s overrated. Usually when pressed, they say they have only seen 2 movies with him in it, but they are sure he is overrated.
3
MobileFart Apr 3, 2026 +1
oh no.
1
AugieDoggieDank Apr 3, 2026 +2
I don’t see how that’s his fault
2
chespiotta Apr 3, 2026 +6
People always complain about him being in too many movies, but that’s only the case if you watch five every year. He’s not a controversial actor or anything either, I don’t get it
6
AugieDoggieDank Apr 3, 2026 +7
Listnookors love to hate
7
dookieshoes97 Apr 3, 2026 +8
Several of his movies would have been made-for-TV flicks 20 years ago, but he's just stoked to be working and has a very positive attitude. That pissed off the 'you made a bad movie and should feel bad' crowd. I actually liked his Running Man more than the original. It was great. As he has said, he's just happy to be working as a Hollywood actor. He did a bunch of stinkers, but had the positive attitude, charisma, and good looks to advance past that. It's honestly impressive.
8
RYouNotEntertained Apr 3, 2026 +1
Top Gun, Hit Man, Running Man, Anyone But You, Twisters… I’m pretty sure this is every movie he’s done since I knew who he was and none scream made-for-tv. I don’t really have strong feelings about him but he’s legitimately great in Hit Man.
1
Appropriate_Formal64 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Because after watching him in Twisters and The Running Man, I and a bunch of other people realized he doesn't have that leading man quality. He's a self-conscious actor and he's too goofy/snarky without the gravitas to balance it out. I think he'd be great in hyper goofy Naked Gun/Airplane! style farce where he's playing the serious, cocky and swaggering type but self-aware and winking- because he does that in what should be more straight forward roles and performances no matter what the rest of the material.
1
cinderful Apr 3, 2026 +3
he just doesnt have the same rizz and is kinda squinty
3
ray0923 Apr 2, 2026 +10
OMG, he is.
10
flintlock0 Apr 3, 2026 +7
lol As much as I loved Powell in Hitman, I’m now realizing that Gosling actually would have been amazing in that role.
7
mariop715 Apr 3, 2026 +14
I don't know. Arjona and him had insane chemistry, and Powell did cowrite the film, so he probably knew exactly how that character should have been portrayed as intended.
14
minimite1 Apr 3, 2026 +2
Glen Powell is fine but now I think about it Ryan Gosling could’ve played him in any of his roles and done a better job lmao
2
ScrambleSoup Apr 2, 2026 +7
Chris Pratt is temu Gosling. Powell is like generic brand
7
Professional_Ad_5437 Apr 2, 2026 +54
Nah I think Powell actually has some pretty good range, and he can play funny quite naturally
54
Arcranium_ Apr 2, 2026 +20
I agree, he does a great job in most any project he's in. It's mostly the projects he's in that sometimes leave a lot to be desired lol, at least recently
20
ScrambleSoup Apr 3, 2026 +7
Generic brand works just as well as the name brand, but people have a hang up on generic sometimes
7
ningdon Apr 3, 2026 +3
How to make a killing is a pretty meh movie but he's really good in it.
3
griffmeister Apr 2, 2026 +9
He absolutely stole every scene in Everybody Wants Some!! I will say his face is too small for his head though
9
B0omSLanG Apr 3, 2026 +7
It's the constant squint with a shit eating grin for me. Saw him first in Top Gun Maverick and it's been hard for me to ignore since. Well played tbf.
7
st1802015 Apr 2, 2026 +12
I think he's been somewhat forced on the public in the sense he has a very good agent, and/or Hollywood execs want him to be the next big star, but anything I've ever seen him in I've enjoyed. I think in the next few years he will be in a few unexpected films where he gets to show his range a bit more and people will realise he's not just a face.
12
FX114 Apr 3, 2026 +5
To be fair, generic brand is better than Temu brand.
5
Hi-Tech_Luddite Apr 2, 2026 +26
I think that run for Chris is over. He will be doing religious/chud movies within 5 years.
26
damndraper Apr 2, 2026 +11

I hope not. He’s a rare instance where it seems like he’s a great person off-camera, but on-camera he just does not work for me!
1
OrangeFilmer Apr 2, 2026 +153
He was just announced for it like 3 days ago??
153
DavidTheJohnson Apr 2, 2026 +256
For what it's worth, the reasoning was because of scheduling issues.
256
ROBtimusPrime1995 Apr 2, 2026 +199
Yeah, sounds like they couldn't push this film back to accommodate Ryan's schedule. Bet Gosling is super bummed, The Daniels' style is the kind of freaky fun he loves to work with. Now who do you get to replace him?
199
uncultured_swine2099 Apr 3, 2026 +48
Yeah, most of the time when a movie plays musical chairs with its actors its because of scheduling. Its rarely about creative differences, although Gosling went through that with The Lovely Bones.
48
cjojojo Apr 3, 2026 +19
I thought the lovely bones thing was because he decided on his own that the character should be fat without consulting the director or anybody about it and went and got himself fat right before filming
19
uncultured_swine2099 Apr 3, 2026 +29
Yeah, thats creative difference.
29
cjojojo Apr 3, 2026 +3
ohhh i see what you're saying now. sorry i misread a bit.
3
Desperate_Algae_40 Apr 3, 2026 +4
I thought it was because he was too young for the role?
4
rubber_hedgehog Apr 3, 2026 +1
He was 28 when that movie came out, so he was definitely a little young to be playing the father of a 14 year old.
1
part_time_monster Apr 3, 2026 +1
R Patz or Jesse Plemmons.
1
weighingthedog Apr 3, 2026 +6
Chris Evans?
6
chespiotta Apr 3, 2026 +1
Wouldn’t be mad at that
1
ModernNero Apr 3, 2026 +1
This is the only and actual answer (I am a working actor) lol
1
metalsatch Apr 3, 2026 +1
That’s the excuse they use for everything to avoid media drama
1
EwanMcNugget Apr 2, 2026 +4
Figured this exactly.
4
OneBigRed Apr 3, 2026 +1
”Sorry, i have a scheduling conflict” ”What, we haven’t even outlined a schedule yet?” ”Yeah, but i’m locked in this event *certainly not doing your f****** film* for the foreseeable future”
1
MVIVN Apr 3, 2026 +1
Well, scheduling issues seems to be the standard catch-all excuse used in Hollywood whenever they don’t want to state the real reason someone walked away so I’d take that with a grain of salt. Remember for example that Jenna Ortega ‘officially’ left Scream 7 due to “scheduling issues” but she later said the real reason was because Paramount fired Melissa Barrera for bullshit political reasons and she didn’t want to do it anymore. Not saying there’s definitely drama here, but “scheduling issues” can mean anything in Hollywood. Didn’t like the script or had an unpleasant interaction with the director can be turned into “scheduling issues”.
1
awoodz92 Apr 2, 2026 +55
He’s got the right amount of weird to work well with the Daniels. I could see him playing either of the leads in Swiss Army Man very well in an alternate universe. Hopefully they find a way to work together in the future.
55
homecinemad Apr 2, 2026 +191
Give it to Chris Pine
191
Littered2 Apr 2, 2026 +110
DND has proved this comment correct.
110
threeactjack Apr 3, 2026 +58
Such a good film. I want a sequel so bad.
58
NoNefariousness2144 Apr 3, 2026 +1
I would like to hear why you want a sequel… but we should really wait for Jarnathan to get here first.
1
ImGonnaImagineSummit Apr 3, 2026 +44
We need a sequel. It was so much better than it needed to be. Pine narrating as Xenk walked in a straight line is basically a perfect audition.
44
rookie-mistake Apr 3, 2026 +5
especially since iirc that was improv
5
Freakjob_003 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Basically. The director yelled cut, but Regé-Jean Page didn't hear him, so he just kept walking.
1
Skyzfire Apr 3, 2026 +1
Please let Masters of the Universe be half as good as DnD. It sadly don't have a Chris Pine to carry it though. I have never heard of the lead actor before so hopefully he surprises.
1
Quazifuji Apr 3, 2026 +1
Chris Pine was great but I wouldn't say he carried the movie. It's not like the writing or other actors did a bad job. Hell, Rege Jean-Page stole every scene he was in, in my opinion.
1
XboxSeriesCancelled Apr 3, 2026 +6
"That comedic role in a niche IP film that didn't perform well tells me he's the man for this project we know nothing about!" I don't mean to be a hater but like cmon

Chris Pine is always a good answer

His schedule didn’t support their timeline. Saved you a click.
7
Johnny_Blaze_123 Apr 2, 2026 +19
Can someone explain this title to me?
19
Will-Of-D-3D2Y Apr 3, 2026 +23
Daniels is the nickname of the director duo whose names are both Daniel. An "event pic" is just a big budget movie that will be marketed like an event, like they do for any Christopher Nolan movie or the upcoming Spielberg scifi. Gosling was supposed to be the main actor in the movie, but he has now exited the project. Universal is the studio producing the movie.
23
Johnny_Blaze_123 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Appreciate you 🙏
1
bacon_cake Apr 3, 2026 +1
Ah so he's no longer working on a movie with Daniel. Got it.

>When Deadline first broke the news Gosling was in negotiations to star, We also learned that the film was set to shoot in Los Angeles this summer after receiving a California Tax Credit. The project was unable to move off its targeted date and because of this scheduling could not be worked out with the studio and Gosling to close a deal.

He’s been teasing meetings with Marvel. I wonder if that came to fruition and he made room in his schedule.

In completely unrelated news, I’m excited to announce that I’m starring in the untitled Daniels Event Pic

Suspicious_Hand_2194 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Glen Powell, how would you like to be in the new Daniels movie?

They broke the rules, they made him sit in while they were running it down and wanted him to carry a gun. He only drives.

Anyone else thinks this picture makes me wanna see a return of Raising Arizona 2 with Gosling being the kid all grown up?

rabbi_glitter Apr 3, 2026 +1
They will literally pull another actor out of their butts (or into theirs). It’s canon.

AquaSquatch Apr 3, 2026 +1
Was he turned down? For what?

StrokyBoi Apr 3, 2026 +1
If you were to simply open the article and read a bit of it, you'd know he left because of scheduling issues.

catclockticking Apr 3, 2026 +1
Kinda surprised that people in the movies sublistnook can’t read a simple Deadline headline
1
Walaina Apr 3, 2026 +1
Good. I think they need to do something a little less cliche
1
makenzie71 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Is this article really "Ryan Gosling won't be in a movie"?

What is an “event pic”??

Famous_Abrocoma_1335 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Daniels will cast someone no one saw coming and it'll make perfect sense in hindsight.

TheInvisibleCircus Apr 3, 2026 +1
Damn Daniel

I don’t think we should immediately draw the conclusion that this means the film will be bad. His press run for PHM has been no joke, and this is allegedly starting production in June. He likely would have felt absolutely depleted by the end of this & the man is notoriously family-oriented so probably just wanted to spend the summer with his wife & kids instead. Respect to him.

I wonder if this has to do with the crazy success of Hail Mary, like they are thinking of producing a sequel.
1
IronGigant Apr 3, 2026 +1
They couldn't go by The Daniels. No, that'd be too mainstream. Monomers are soo in right now, anyway.
