I agree with him. Diedre playing a possessed Marlena is one of my earliest memories and it has stayed with me!

SMELLSLIKEBUTTJUICE Mar 27, 2026 +253
The John/Marlena/Stefano saga followed by Passions was a formative experience for me when I was 10. I barely had time to do my chores during summer break!

I’m about Ryan Gosling’s age and I’ve been writing in Hollywood for 15 years. I 100% reference the John/Marlena/Stefano possession arc in writers rooms. It made that big an impression on me as a teen.

RogerClyneIsAGod2 Mar 27, 2026 +29
They programmed the possession storyline to combat the OJ trial. They won me over but I was already a big DoOL fan.

notches123 Mar 27, 2026 +11
Was this before or after the serial killer arc? That was the only time I watched that show because I worked nights at the time and didn't have cable. Poor starving artists in the aughts watched a lot of Days I imagine.
11
VineStGuy Mar 28, 2026 +2
Before.

Still sad we never got an actual Buffy x Passions crossover episode.

Hi are you me? Actually, I was 8 during the Marlene being possessed and John Black is the exorcist storyline.

Anondependa Mar 27, 2026 +13
Same! I loved nothing more than on spring and summer break getting up to watch Days and then Passions and talk about it with friends! Such great memories!
13
libraryfroggy Mar 27, 2026 +11
Same! It's amazing what a cultural touchstone that was. And then Sami kidnapping the baby, Jesus Christ that's was insane. I loved it.

I am a 54 year old male and every summer in the 80s, I would get hooked on Days of our Lives in the 80s. I'd come in from playing, eat lunch, watch, then go back out. Then school would start and my grandmother would do her best to keep me up, but she didn't speak English well and it was difficult for her to keep up. I remember when John de Lancie was on, a few years before he appeared on Star Trek, TNG. I remember when they had a guy named Patch...and I remember that Deidre Hall was put through some of the most ridiculous plots imaginable. I remember my grandmother would gleefully tell me that Stefano was back. I'm not a fan of the genre, but I was a fan of Days of Our Lives.
9
Rafahil Mar 28, 2026 +6
Same for me u/SMELLSLIKEBUTTJUICE, I was also 10 and watched it with my mother and was hooked. The show did get really off the rails when Marlena's daughter became a man and went to war so she could help her bf or something lol.
6
Jloother Mar 27, 2026 +8
> Stefano That name gave me a Dune-esq sense memory flashback.
8
plannerchica Mar 28, 2026 +4
My brother and I did not get along. He was always angry and abusive, so I stayed away. But one summer day as I finished watching Days, Passions began. He was around and watched it with me. Then every day at 2pm, he’d show up, and it became our time. We aren’t close; he chose the hard road in life, but that summer was one of the few good memories I have of my childhood.
4
Cru_Jones86 Mar 27, 2026 +8
That went on for a long time didn't it? My family would vacation in the same place every year. Been going there since I was a baby so, over many summers, I made friends with the locals. Most of them were girls so, when we were about middle school age, I'd go over to their house. Those girls got me all into "Days". I remember Marlena being possessed. When we went back the next summer, I was surprised to find that she was STILL posessed. I didn't watch that show for an entire winter, and STILL didn't miss any of the story.
8
SMELLSLIKEBUTTJUICE Mar 27, 2026 +13
That is the power and the glory of daytime soaps.
13
vera214usc Mar 28, 2026 +1
I don't care how bad it was; I miss Passions dearly

I used to cut school to watch Passions. That was the most bar shit insane stuff in the best possible way.

Chu_Kiddin_Me_Or_Wha Mar 27, 2026 +33
Marlena is a GOAT. I grew up with Days of our Lives in the background of my childhood. Those storylines were crazy!
33
bchris24 Mar 27, 2026 +10
Same, grew up in a Days household and was subjected to thousands of hours of it. What an insane show!

Bo, Hope, Marlena, Victor, Sammy….! Shit got wild
10
Big_Bookkeeper1678 Mar 28, 2026 +7
I loved Bo and Hope and Marlena and Roman, John Black...Hope might have been my third crush after Lynda Carter and Erin Gray.

Mrs_Evryshot Mar 28, 2026 +2
Shane and Kimberly were my favorite couple. Charles Shaughnessy was so gorgeous.
2
Lisnya Mar 27, 2026 +6
Try having it be one of your earliest memories *and being a Greek Orthodox kid in Greece*. It was right up there with MOTW episodes in the X-Files and Kimberly in Melrose Place blowing up the building, it was terrifying.
6
MarlanaS Mar 27, 2026 +4
When my mom was pregnant with me she was absolutely miserable. Her feet swelled so bad she couldn't walk and had terrible back pain, so she watched a lot of TV and Days was her favorite. I was named after Marlena but she spelled it wrong on my birth certificate.
4
ArArmytrainingsir Mar 28, 2026 +2
Eight hour a day, day job. Get a few days off if you don’t have a Shoot. Get to watch your kids grow up.
2
ChaChiBaio Mar 28, 2026 +2
This brought back memories. Any show that has the writing and acting that can suck in a 10 year old, 34 year old, and 70 year old all at the same time is exceptional.
2
Pretty_Frosting_2588 Mar 28, 2026 +2
I was really into that in 8th grade and got my first middle school girlfriend because my mom recorded the show on VHS daily. I used to sit with some girls at lunch and tell them what happened on previous episode. Then one asked if she could borrow it and. I said no she'll need it tomorrow and she asked if I could bring it over to watch. I watched it from the possession until Kirsten was  also playing that "ugly" woman.
2
Homosuperiorpod Mar 27, 2026 +344
Good. Soaps are a hard job. Acting bootcamp they call it. And hundred of huge stars made their start in soaps. Oscar winners amongst them. Most of the Australian stars we know made their breaks in them.
344
Scu-bar Mar 27, 2026 +124
Neighbours or Home & Away, they’ve got to do one before they’re allowed to leave.
124

Now there's only H & A so half the chance to become famous

We have a bit of GP shortage, he could go do his f****** job. [I understand this is a tv show for those who take internet comments literally/seriously]. The real tragedy is Toadie, without his good Neighbors that everybody needs, he is nothing.
7
meltymcface Mar 27, 2026 +11
Yep and in the UK you’ll see most British actors have been in one of several shows such as Doctors, Holby City, Casualty or The Bill.

In the UK soap acting is nearly always dreadful.
2
Imaybetoooldforthis Mar 28, 2026 +3
It’s because in the U.K. the place to get your acting start and education is theatre. Soaps are generally where your acting career goes to die here.

2
Bigred2989- Mar 27, 2026 +7
As a kid I was only allowed to watch TV if it was whatever my parents were watching, which meant most of the time it was Days. I had to program the VCR is record whatever I was watching on Toonami and eventually I'd end up with a backlog of VHS tapes of random episodes. As soon as we got a DVD player I bought Gundam Wing with my allowance, it was way easier that way.
7

I have the Young and the Restless theme song on my sleep playlist. I just added it recently and my wife immediately recognized it.

Lets be honest... if Ryan Gosling was in direct competition with the superb acting performance of Dr. Drake Ramoray he would never stand a chance.
77
NoNoNotorious85 Mar 27, 2026 +38
Ryan Gosling could NEVER pull off Smell The Fart acting. No matter how many episodes of Breaker High he was in.
38
biophazer242 Mar 27, 2026 +9
He gets pretty close during his SNL roles :)

limelifesavers Mar 27, 2026 +42
DoOL is such a wild show, and the actors truly commit hard to everything. The physical acting is often so active and nuanced because it's meets how the show is shot more close up than most. I still insist Supernatural would not have worked without Jensen Ackles for this reason. That show gets memed on a lot, and it overstayed its welcome by 10+ seasons, but the reason you buy into the brothers' dynamic is because Jensen brought those soap opera techniques in, and when the duo were shot together, it contrasted with the rest of the show's material so vividly. The soap writers are on another level to churn out that much content while keeping continuity in the plot threads and like 7 or 8 active arcs. They deserve more credit and praise than they get.
42
QuietlyLosingMyMind Mar 27, 2026 +29
I find thr more people complain about Supernatural's later season, the less they appreciate camp. There was a huge tone change to the show post season 5, but I can appreciate something that's campy af. Jensen really did hold that show together with sheer force of will.
29
limelifesavers Mar 27, 2026 +9
I can feel that. Personally, I loved S1-5 and the whole cohesive narrative. A lot of what came after didn't neatly fit into a monster of the week format or the kind of layered narrative we saw in S1-5. I could appreciate camp, just not a lack of narrative commitment on the writers' side. It could still be fun and entertaining but not something I'd carve out time in my schedule for
9
rabidsalvation Mar 27, 2026 +5
I've watched the whole thing twice, and I'm watching it again right now, lol. One of my favorite shows of all time. It also brings back some of the happiest memories that I have with my younger brother. Life didn't get better, and that's a reminder of time when smiles came easier.
5
QuietlyLosingMyMind Mar 28, 2026 +3
That's fair. The longer it went on it was less about plot and more about vibes. One whole season felt like just a vehicle for jokes about the name D***. It's not high brow comedy but you can tell everyone was having fun.
3
TNtative Mar 27, 2026 +21

I don’t really follow DOOL that much, but don’t they have one of the bigger gaps between recording and airing in all of soaps? Like, a year difference?

I faked being sick for a week so I could stay home From school and watch that possession

If you were a 90's kid and missed school, you were definitely watching Days of our Lives lol
13

I was a 90s kid, didn’t miss much school but made it a habit to VHS tape record every episode so I could watch it after school. All it took was one summer break at grandmas house to get me hooked
1
AnewTest Mar 27, 2026 +31
It was damn good acting. The writing, however... good lord that whole plot was cringe as hell. Very well acted, but good lord.
31
cagingnicolas Mar 27, 2026 +25
i mean the thing about soap opera writing, acting, and direction is that they're really not aiming for the same target as many other forms of media. whether or not we enjoy the final product, it is executed exactly as intended and ultimately pleases an audience that maybe just doesn't include us.
25
rabidsalvation Mar 27, 2026 +11
So many people just don't understand that some things weren't made for them.
11
gankindustries Mar 28, 2026 +4
If anything, it shows how good an actors chops are when they can really go above and beyond with a mediocre script. A trait that can serve them well for the rest of their careers.
4
Psyduckisnotaduck Mar 27, 2026 +3
Soap opera writing must be cringe because of who it’s written for - conventionally “good” writing does not serve the purposes soap opera is made for.

TelltaleHead Mar 27, 2026 +9
I think generally we don't give enough credence to acting in roles where the writing is either bad, lazy, or campy.  I think a lot about how some of the actors on Riverdale are actually quite talented, its just that they are being asked to deliver ludicrous dialogue.
9
International_Low284 Mar 28, 2026 +7
I’m definitely a lifelong soap fan. Grew up watching General Hospital, Days, Another World, and Guiding Light. J.E.R. was not my cup of tea, just because I always preferred character-driven soap stories as opposed to the fantastical camp that J.E.R. insisted upon. (Okay, I did like Carly buried alive). But in terms of the acting, soap actors are incredible. Ryan is right - they definitely don’t get the credit they deserve. I think the networks made a huge mistake by cancelling most of the soaps. There is still an audience for good soap opera, and they offer something no other medium can - the chance to follow characters through decades of their lives. Good for Ken Corday and Days for pivoting to steaming and saving the show. I wish OLTL and AMC had been able to do the same after they were cancelled by the network. At that time though, streaming was in its infancy.
7
CrissBliss Mar 27, 2026 +7
I still watch B&B and Y&R. Sure they’re campy, but they’re incredibly fun too. And those actors have to turn out performances constantly. It’s why I never understood why Eva Longoria said she was embarrassed to work on Y&R. It’s how you refine your skills, show off your talents and get more work.
7
I_LOVE_CANADA_GEESE Mar 28, 2026 +1
Yes!!!! Finally some love for The Young & The Restless ... had to scroll way too far. That Eva Longoria storyline was pretty wild back in the day. First time I watched Planet of the Apes 3 and unexpectedly saw a young Victor Newman hanging with monkys, my jaw hit the floor
1
No_Difficulty_9365 Mar 27, 2026 +7
I watched a lot of soap operas in my youth. I agree that some of the acting is superb, but the dialogue is usually c***.

6
LeftHandLannister Mar 27, 2026 +26
Let’s hear what chalamet has to say about soups stars
26
GroovyYaYa Mar 27, 2026 +20
Frankly, I think it would have done Chalamet a world of good to do a year on a soap when he was younger. Deirdre Hall and Susan Lucci have had to learn more lines in a year than he'll probably have to learn in his lifetime. Theater folk also work 7 days a week and sometimes 2x on Saturdays... but it is the same script every day.

"soap opera"? possesion by the devil??? so days of our lives was supernatural show?
5
BranWafr Mar 27, 2026 +14
It was also Sci-fi. John Delancie, who played Q on Star Trek had a role on Days where he played an eccentric inventor married to one of the main characters. They wrote him out of the show by having his character invent a time machine. He returned from the future years later with an android clone of his wife. Then his real wife got kidnapped by people from the future who were trying to retrieve the android. Soaps can get crazy.
14
GoldenTriforceLink Mar 27, 2026 +5
Not often. Except for when it was. In the mid 2000s a meteor fell and brought alien twins to earth, who looked like humans. One left and the other stayed as a normal cast member and eventual they just pretended they were humans for the rest of the show.

5
yonkerbonk Mar 27, 2026 +9
As a kid growing up in the 80s I absolutely hated soap operas. When you were sick and stayed home, there was nothing for a good 3-4 hour block in the middle of the day but soap operas. I was so bored. Then during college I had no class during lunch and would always take my lunch at home. Being a broke college kid I didn't have cable to watch so... soap operas it was. And boy, did I get hooked on All My Children. And then anytime I got together with my eldest sister-in-law, we would talk and gossip about the characters in the show. It's the only thing I had in common with her but we liked to talk about that. lol. Good memories.
9
jojayp Mar 27, 2026 +6
Took care of my grandma for a summer after she had surgery. She got me watching All My Children. Then I recorded it every day for two years because I needed to know if Bianca would get her baby back. I totally understand.
6
Wolf_Redfield Mar 28, 2026 +2
Being a 90s kid, I got hooked up on All My Children precisely because of Bianca so I remember being all pissed every day thinking "Why is it taking so long? Just let Bianca get her kid back"... Good times.

His next movie is going to be about being a Soap Opera actor isn’t it? I mean I hope… because that sort of sounds awesome.

As a kid and teen, I was totally down with all the typical stuff but watching Days of our Lives with my grandma was a guilty pleasure .That show was something else. Kudos to Ryan for calling it out. He's a real one.

I remember in Chechnya, there were only 2 times my grandmother would take her slipper off was when she was watching soap opera(even during the war she wanted to go to one over her 3 apartments that did. All her apartments were let’s just say in areas where we would have rockets land in our apartments and not explode. one of those adventure, when I was bringing up water I saw Russian men walking out of apartment with my grandmother slipper and asked me to return it to her.) The second one was when Mike Tyson was boxing, kicked her husband out gave my aunt the slipper, her husband the slipper, college students the slipper, my dad when he was visiting with his bodyguard friends. One thing I don’t understand to this day is when her tv wasn’t working she made a phone call in speaking old Chechen and in one hour men who were dressed like they were on track team dropped off a tv. It looked like everyone talked with their eye, no one said a word. When it came to me, well of course I was spoiled, she would take me a tree and make me choose what branch I wanted.

The Marlena possession story line was epic

vendettaclause Mar 27, 2026 +4
My god that will live with me forever. Stefano was trying to exercise her and got thrown out of window and died. Then during the next story arc he came back with a nuclear submarine and tried to keep that Marlena. Now not possessed.

I’ve watched days on and off since I was prob 8 or 9. when I was in my early 20s it was my tv obsession, especially being a daily show. I couldn’t get enough of EJ(OG), will, Melanie. I should try it again.

Pale-Acanthaceae-736 Mar 27, 2026 +2
He's right. Look how long it took Susan Lucci to get an Emmy Award! I figured she would be Ryan's prime example.
2
Wolf_Redfield Mar 28, 2026 +2
I will never forget how when Sarah Michelle Gellar was on AMC she got the Emmy faster and sooner than Susan Lucci did...

Michael B. Jordon started on All My Children. Most actors on soaps are great. They‘re pros! They hit their marks, deliver the emotions, memorize pages of dialogue every day, and they do it for years. They should be paid more than movie actors!
2
barb_lucky Mar 27, 2026 +2
Honestly he’s not wrong — soap actors have to deliver insane emotional range fast with barely any breaks, and people still overlook them. Deidre Hall’s Devil possession storyline was wild and iconic… you can see how that would stick with someone getting into acting. Respect where it’s due.

An actual famous actor saying "well, I watched it and it mattered to me" even though none of us watched soaps is sweet

They don’t get the recognition??? Acting nominations at the Daytime Emmys were basically exclusively for them for decades.
13
opermonkey Mar 27, 2026 +72
some people don't consider the daytime emmys as legitimate. some even criticize Whoopie Goldbergs EGOT recognition because of such. all of the awards are nonsense anyways(unless something I like wins then they are totally legit!)

Even the awards show itself doesn't take itself seriously. Like have some pride. But no. Let's have random things like a circus act in the middle of it, and stream it on the most obscure app possible.

GoldenLink Mar 27, 2026 +15
I definitely think there's a case of them getting the wrong kind of recognition. Being a mainstay soap opera star at the end of the day is a LOT more work than most other acting careers, and you're often really limited or restricted on how you can really flex your acting chops. Yeah the daytime emmys were essentially a way for them to fluff their own feathers, but I think a part of that is because at the end of the day what they do is a lot more endurance oriented than other acting gigs.

GroovyYaYa Mar 27, 2026 +13
They get plenty of recognition **within their part of the industry. There has always been a hierarchy.** They don't get it outside of it - it is still "less than" or "lower class". It is still a big deal when you talk about people transitioning from soap operas to night time television, let alone movies. It used to be unheard of when TV actors went to movies. I'm old enough to remember when it was a BFD and kind of a shock when Bruce Willis did Moonlighting and Die Hard at the same time. When people were a little skeptical about Ron Howard, a tv staple, started directing movies - and not made for TV movies! And honestly, once you were lucky enough to make the transition from TV to movies? You NEVER went back. Primetime was seen as better than Daytime as well. You hardly EVER saw a major movie star agree to do even primetime TV show, unless they were older and no longer really hired by studios and they needed the income (thinking of someone like Barbara Stanwyck here.) It was still regarded as a step down, and soap operas DEFINITELY were "less than" primetime tv. Premium channels like HBO, and later, the streamers changed that a bit. Maybe startng with Sex in the City - but SJP had roots in TV and theater and was executive producing the project. Now we have Oscar winners (Matthew McConaughey, Jodie Foster, Billy Bob Thornton) willing to do streaming television because they have such short seasons (8 episodes vs. 24) The stigma has lessened a lot. The fact that it is still a big deal? It was a major topic when Shrinking started. Jason Segal and Brett Goldstein have both been asked, with some incredulity, "How did you get HARRISON FORD????" They never ever thought they would. Michael B. Jordan even acknowledged this backstage at the Oscars, that daytime soap people don't get a lot of respect that they deserve. Sure, crazy pants storylines, but those people have a WORK ETHIC and stamina that should be respected and acknowledged.

Gailybird83 Mar 27, 2026 +12
No they definitely do not get the recognition for the sheer amount of work they constantly put in. Daytime Emmys aren’t nearly as prestigious as Primetime Emmys, and they also aren’t included in the Golden Globes, People’s Choice, any other major awards that exist out there. And they’re constantly being dogged on and assumed to be bad actors by people who have never watched.

optimis344 Mar 27, 2026 +34
While true, it's the daytime emmys. Winning one isn't recognition. Saying you won an Emmy, and then having it be a daytime Emmy, is like saying you fought a bear, and it turns out you punched a college mascot once.

I think he moreso means that Soap Opera is a joke. Its an insult. Hell, the Saw series has a lot of its fans like it because of its "Cringe ass soap opera elements that are silly as hell" ironically :P Its seen by a lottttt of people as a lesser form of entertainment. I remember them being joked about like how we insult AI slop like "Soap operas are just mass produced slop for the masses" and stuff. a "lowest standard trash meant for aging moms at home alone in the mornings with low standards because its 9am and nothing else is on" or whatever

Probably because even the best soap opera acting is being done to lift terrible scripts and bloated dialogue Gosling can appreciate the struggle of making something from nothing, commitment as it were, but it doesn’t automatically translate to something worthy of praise I could be very committed to collecting my toenails, scientific about it, but I would still be collecting dead ends

VoraciousChallenge Mar 27, 2026 +9
Doing good work with bad material is still praiseworthy. There's a dude in town that makes scuptures and things out of found metals and trash. I bought a motorcycle he made and gave it to my dad for Christmas. Its made of spoons and a spark plug and a bunch of other c***, but its still the centrepiece on dad's coffee table and he brings it up every time I see him.  Collecting toenails is one thing. But elevating those toenails to something people enjoy is quite another.

NewBoxStruggles Mar 28, 2026 +1
There’s trash, and then there is *trash*. I’m not sure I’d want to elevate anything out of the soap opera bin. I’m not so sure the actors want to either, unless it’s themselves.
1
NewBoxStruggles Mar 28, 2026 +1
Ryan, very rarely does someone “get what they deserve”. And I’d hope that soap opera stars..and the entertainment industry as a whole, would not be first in line to “get theirs”. Comparatively, they already have.
