The thing that doesn't work is that Miles Dyson turned out to be a good dude and tried to help them destroy his work. That's not going to happen with Sam Altman. If a time traveler told him he invented Skynet and killed billions, he'd ask if he could increase the numbers.
Edit: or how much value it created for the shareholders.

Problem is, that argument works for all the workers displaced by AI who have families, too.
Altman and Co think they're better because they distance themselves and think they're morally superior because of it, because they're not the ones pulling the trigger on those lives personally. But when you displace enough people lives are lost all the same.
The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. While I think individuals like Altman aren't trying to *intentionally* harm people for the sake of harm, I do think they are either ignorant or just too non-chalant about that being a possible outcome.
I personally would have less issues with the AI Revolution if measures were being taken by these companies to prevent that level of harm, or to at least counteract it in some way, but if they had that level of foresight we would never have had uprisings ever.
13
fatherOblivion696 hr ago
+3
They have that level of foresight. Based on recent history they know the workers aren't going to do shit and go home with their tails between their legs, get drunk and blame whoever the media scapegoat is this time.
3
MrTastix5 hr ago
+4
That same history also shows us people will revolt *eventually*.
In the scale of human history, "recent" is sweet f*** all.
People do nothing because it's not bad enough for them to do something yet. If the end result is literal starvation and homelessness, when you have literally nothing to lose, why would I still do nothing?
Billionaires also think they're gonna be able to make bunkers in New Zealand that they'll somehow fend off their own engineers and security teams with. Little do they know, modern bunkers still require an air source.
4
Andy12_5 hr ago
-3
> I personally would have less issues with the AI Revolution if measures were being taken by these companies to prevent that level of harm,
But they sort of advocate for those sort of measures? Most AI labs, including OpenAI, openly advocate for UBI to be implemented and paid for by increasing corporate taxes. Sam Altman in particular even paid for an UBI trial to study its effects.
We don't know of he's being really honest, but it seems weird to target him of all people when there are other billionaires which have definitely not spoken at all about UBI.

-1
NubDestroyer9 hr ago

You want change? Get out and vote, everywhere you can. Get out to campaign offices and volunteer, get into politics in the real world and be a part of the change. These things start on the local level. There's a reason the old people control everything. Sitting on your ass and hoping some lunatic uses violence against the people you don't like is not normal.
-11
6figga9 hr ago
+13
After we vote, when corporations inevitably lobby with millions for these politician’s support, what do we do then?
Vote harder?
13
NubDestroyer9 hr ago
-7
F*** the corporation's. We have the power. Look at Wisconsins supreme Court election last year. when Elon Musk dumped truck loads of money into last year and personally went there to try and get people to vote for his choice
-7
6figga8 hr ago
+8
We do have the power. With our current system of government, it’s not going to be exercised effectively via politicians.
Like it or not, any kind of major overthrow is going to get violent and uncomfortable. People don’t want to deal with discomfort or disrupt their daily lives, understandably to a point, but it has to happen eventually.
8
NubDestroyer8 hr ago
+3
Start local, stop only looking at the federal politics. Effect change in your communities and grow your beliefs. Hoping for a violent uprising is absolutely deranged and not something the left stands to win regardless
3
6figga8 hr ago
+6
Still thinking in right or left says a lot.
I vote on all of my local and state ballots, takes 30 minutes total. My local politicians aren’t the ones sexually abusing children (hopefully), committing to wars for Israel, and sending the cost of living to the stratosphere. Small scale change isn’t going to defeat actual evil.
6
goddamnitwhalen8 hr ago
+6
How exactly does voting have anything to do with ultra-billionaires like Sam Altman? Neither of our political parties seem inclined to actually do anything about them, so…
6
NubDestroyer8 hr ago
What would you like to be done about billionaires like Sam Altman? If the answer to that question is important to you then go find someone who has a like minded view point and support them through voting, volunteering and spreading the word. People don't realise how much power to affect change people have on the local level, that is where things begin. Don't just look at federal politics

As a reminder, the Luddites were 19th-century English textile artisans who destroyed machinery, particularly mechanized looms, to protest wage reductions and the replacement of skilled labor.
