Asking people on the internet *not* to do something always works.

Hey Russia, if you are listening...

"I actually hope it doesn't [leak] because then everyone's going to have an opinion on this and that, and pilots are not finished," said the actress, who's currently making the media rounds promoting her new horror movie, Ready or Not 2: Here | Come, which opens this weekend. "It wasn't done, right? It's not like we did a season and finished it and then they shelved it. It's not like when they made the Batgirl movie and didn't [release] it. That movie was finished. You make a pilot — and I want to clarify this — we made a pilot [first instead of a full season] on purpose because there's some new characters and you want to see how it goes. There are things you learn from it, and there are things you fix. Usually, [the first version of al pilot doesn't air ... it's a learning tool. The original Buffy pilot [had] nothing to do with the show. It was a different Willow. It was a very different show. But those are learning tools and that's what a pilot is." "I've seen a version of the script out there," she said. "It's not actually correct. That stuff is really unfortunate and I ask fans if you see scripts - if you see it leaked - don't watch it because you're not getting our vision and all of that." Gellar added the reason she's spoken out about the cancellation is that the Buffy reboot "deserves respect. And when I don't see it being given the respect, then! have to stand up for that because that's important to me." The actress concluded by telling fans, "There's two things you can do if you want to make this right. You can go stream Buffy [and] go see my movie. That's all we can do right now."

“Go see my movie…that has nothing to do with Buffy.”

No but the studio might think ‘huh SMG is still popular, we should find someway to make this project we have with her work after all.’

beefcat_ Mar 18, 2026 +45
I think it's more like this: 1. She's got a press tour lined up to promote her new movie 2. Buffy news dropped right before press tour 3. Press is obviously going to ask questions about it because Buffy is easily what she is most famous for

Joey-WilcoXXX Mar 18, 2026 -13
Umm the clear and obvious basics of it, yes. My statement is about how seeing the movie can be seen as a way to ‘make things right’ as SMG said.

I've seen the original Big Bang Theory pilot. They retained a lot of dialogue but it was way different. So I know what she means. I saw the Wonder Woman (2011) pilot; it's fine. You can see what they did wrong and did right. I understand her concerns, but the whole news surrounding this is not helping her case. It had to be very bad, like live-action Powerpuff Girls bad, for the surprise cancellation. I've also seen leaked episodes. They typically will have little mistakes from editing and none of the CGI yet and just need polishing, so you're getting the bulk of what actually gets aired. If those are were really the problem, we wouldn't be talking about this anymore.

PreferenceAnxious449 Mar 19, 2026 +4
Yeah but the execs at Hulu have *also* seen a bunch of pilots. They've seen a bunch of pilots and said yes to them.
4
colemon1991 Mar 19, 2026 -2
Meh, take it over to Netflix then. Feels like they say yes to everything and guarantee 2 seasons.
-2
PreferenceAnxious449 Mar 19, 2026 -6
Oh god no. Netflix is a cesspool of phoned in front-loaded garbage, as they try their hardest to hold onto the biggest slice of the pie. Netflix would 1000% kill the IP by throwing it at rooms full of nobody writers who hit all the Netflix guidelines for attention sucking.
-6
colemon1991 Mar 19, 2026 +4
I was trying to be sarcastic. Seems like Netflix does a better job with new IP over existing IP, and even that is being generous. Their hits stand out because their overall quality is so low.

davidm2d3 Mar 20, 2026 +1
look up how the Pilot for the Simpsons went. It was so bad it nearly killed the series before season 1 aired

Ren_Kaos Mar 18, 2026 -7
> the pilot was good and should be picked up by another studio but actually don’t watch it if it leaks oh and go watch my completely unrelated movie to really show them for not moving forward with my show that’s really good but again, don’t watch it! Because fans never made anything happen when something was leaked… what a weird attempt at saving face.

Derpderpderpderpde Mar 18, 2026 +65
Oh so it’s bad bad.

She does raise a good point about pilots. They can be very rough drafts. Like the original Buffy or the ultimate example - the original Star Trek pilot with like half the characters being different. Actually makes me feel a lot better about how badly that script sucked. Could've actually been a really rough draft.

Nightgasm Mar 19, 2026 +16
I've seen the original Buffy pilot and its actually very close to the pilot they aired. Different actress as Willow and Buffy's hair is a lot darker but otherwise same dialogue, same story, almost same shots. You can tell they refilmed everything but its still so close.

TheShadyGuy Mar 20, 2026 +1
GoT pilot was supposedly awful. Arya's voiceover pointing out that Jaime is Cersei's brother as they ride into Winterfell has to be a result of that.

-Lykan- Mar 18, 2026 +26
I now want it to leak even harder
26
SuicideKingsHigh Mar 20, 2026 +8
If you actually read her comments what she says is level headed and entirely accurate. Plenty of successful shows get reworked around a pilot, it's not representative of anything but a very first rough draft.

Whollyemu Mar 18, 2026 +28
the amount of astroturfing for this is crazy

ROBtimusPrime1995 Mar 18, 2026 +32
I genuinely can't tell if it's a smear campaign against the reboot or it's against the cancellation.

Yorkshireish12 Mar 19, 2026 +10
Both probably

snowhawk04 Mar 19, 2026 +10
Someone, if your listening, leak the *Marvel Most Wanted* pilot, kthx.

Accomplished-Run221 Mar 19, 2026 +3
Can we not post about this every 6 hours?
3
Smedleysrevenge Mar 18, 2026 +8
Lol, too late and it was shite. She doesn't appear until the last scene, wasn't even in her own reboot. Can't believe they actually shot it, should have been killed in the womb.
8
PreferenceAnxious449 Mar 19, 2026 +1
Why is it 'her own' reboot?
1
James_Parnell Mar 19, 2026 +10
She is Buffy, the namesake of the series
10
PreferenceAnxious449 Mar 20, 2026
The new show was not going to be about her. And they could have done it without her. And hey - the one they did with her... they said no to. So guess what. Not her series. Not even by name. Which is weak f****** sauce.

I appreciate SMG’s respect for the og series and she’s absolutely right about pilots not being ready for public consumption.

Please please 🙏leak the buffy reboot. Someone. Do it
2
Bananaman9020 Mar 19, 2026 +3
Why not? It's not like it will ever be made.

Streisand effect in effect!

nowhereman136 Mar 20, 2026
Even if it does leak and the show is eventually picked up, the new show will likely go through a ton of re-writes. A leaked script might still have certain scenes or themes, but it's not the same thing as the finished product. I remember reading the "leaked" Deadpool script and was still first in line to see the movie. And the movie changed a lot from that leaked script

. . . could you just make a new show with the old characters? You're in your 40s. We're in our 40s. You presumably still like being paid. We need something to watch. Im not a fancy TV excursive, but seems like its a win win?
1
tomrichards8464 Mar 20, 2026 +14
>could you just make a new show with the old characters? Michelle Trachtenburg died. Tony Head's health is too bad for him to act. Nicholas Brendon is an uninsurable woman-beating addict.  Emma Caulfield also has serious medical problems that make it difficult for her to act. Eliza Dushku and Mercedes McNab have retired from acting. David Boreanaz, James Marsters, Julie Benz and Juliet Landau have rather visibly aged in the last 25 years, which is tricky given that their characters are vampires. Amber Benson and Kristine Sutherland's characters died in ways which would make bringing them back problematic. Everyone hated Riley. So actually, kinda tricky.

We can make it work! Like a true Xennial, Buffy has lost touch with all the people she went to school/college with. Everyone moved on. Except her. When the creepy crawlies make a return after 20 years, she has to recruit the people she still has limited face to face interactions with; Amazon delivery guy, self-check out host, and coffee shop employee. *\** yeesh, eerie timing.

I just heard the SMG was only in the last minute or so of the (unreleased) pilot. Has anyone else heard this? Apparently the pilot seemed to indicate it was not so much of a re-boot as it was the launching of a brand new show for the kids (with a very young cast). If so, I totally get why Hulu pulled the plug.

ishityounotdude Mar 20, 2026 +1
She was mainly on as a producer
1
Bobby837 Mar 20, 2026
That's not good. That's not good at all. Otherwise, you'd want it to leak, much like Ryan Reynolds leaking the Deadpool concept, to prove its good.

nickl104 Mar 20, 2026
Said like someone about to leak the script
0
x6ftundx Mar 19, 2026 -2
lol, what that really means is.... The Pilot script was leaked by 'someone,' and they wouldn't want you to know about it or find it with a Google search. Remember, it's all about the publicity around the event. This wasn't the first time and it won't be the last time a 'leak' saved a show.
-2
BongoFett17 Mar 18, 2026 -12
Tooooo late, she should be embarrassed
-12
Divine_fashionva Mar 18, 2026 +5
Embarrassed of what?
5
BongoFett17 Mar 18, 2026 +3
It did leak and it’s the typical c*** we’ve been getting. Buffy deserves better writing.
3
Divine_fashionva Mar 18, 2026 -2
You mean a script where the lead character’s name isn’t even the real name of the character You read a script where the main character was called Nova. She was actually called Rowan. So you read an early draft of the script that’s over a year old
-2
BongoFett17 Mar 18, 2026 +6
Yes both scripts were bad and it wasn’t about Buffy, but the next modern day generation. Buffy was being used like Luke was for Ray. Make a Buffy reboot, about Buffy, and then if people like it, then spin off for her daughter.
6
Divine_fashionva Mar 18, 2026 +2
There’s only one script you’ve read and it’s the one I mentioned which doesn’t even have the main character’s real name
2
BongoFett17 Mar 18, 2026 +3
What I read and what the media is reporting on. I’ve been watching and reading plenty stories about it from different sources.
3
Divine_fashionva Mar 18, 2026 +4
So you read one script, an early one But you mentioned you’ve seen both. The second and more recent one hasn’t even been leaked, so how could you have seen it?
4
BongoFett17 Mar 18, 2026 +1
Where did I mention I read both, I said both were bad. That what the media is reporting. I saw pieces of script, I heard what was reported by people who read them. It bout know why you are so hurt by this, the media is reporting it and Disney denied them, so I believe if Disney says no, it must have been pretty bad.
1
Divine_fashionva Mar 18, 2026 +3
My point is how can you say both scripts are bad when you didn’t see the second and more accurate script? Putting so much trust in Disney is very funny considering the amount of IP’s they’ve ruined. Execs aren’t infallible
3
tyler4422 Mar 20, 2026
oof this is ether a sign its really bad or they've intentionally leaked it somewhere and that want you to go find it. i personally haven't been bothered to look for leaks of tv since that one year a whole season of GoT leaked.
