Satelite of Love-Lou Reed

Posted by Umamikawaii

I just listened to this an and cried. I love the part where Bowie comes in. The song makes me wonder. The harmonies the various piano and strings that come in. I deplore music fans give it a good proper listen. A magical song

You "Implore", you don't "deplore". Deplore means you strongly would dislike someone to listen to it.

It was produced by Bowie and Mick Ronson. Ronson is the unsung one here, he did all the string arrangements I believe.

and that guitar tone: Les Paul, 200 watt Marshall, and Cry Baby wah pedal set to one very particular spot. He was definitely Bowie's secret weapon for that period, the Keith to Bowie's Jagger

Is there any good documentation of what gear Mick used in the studio for Transformer?

considering the times, I'd imagine it was his stage rig for the distorted stuff, but I've never looked into it

Also check out Beside Bowie documentary on Ronson. I caught it on Night Flight Plus.

If you listen carefully, you can hear Bowie in most of the backing vocals on the album Transformer. It's pretty obvious during the last minute of this song.

Bowie was all over that album. He produced it.

You should also give a listen to the demo Lou recorded of it with Velvet Underground. Different vibe but still a great version https://youtu.be/Bxxb0y6rFHQ?si=ybUAdZ2Iqfp8b8sK

Transformer is a masterpiece, I always consider it equally a Bowie album as much as Reed.

I first heard it as covered by U2 on the "One" single. Still my favorite version. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-prmh2lQVo&list=RDg-prmh2lQVo&start\_radio=1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-prmh2lQVo&list=RDg-prmh2lQVo&start_radio=1)

The Zoo tv live version is great too. They put up a prerecorded Lou Reed on the screen to duet

Maybe my favorite backing vocals of all time. Bowie, Reed and Ronson were all amazing

As much as I love that song, I equally hate the "you've been bold with..." part. Ruins a great song.

Those were apparently the real names of the guys his girlfriend was cheating on him with. The song... Is about a detached awareness of being cheated on. Originally he named the characters winken, blinken and nod, but he says that was because he wasn't ready to name the actual dudes yet, and he changed them to the real guys in the final version.

wow, sometimes knowing more about something makes me hate it even more.

Welcome to life. The closer you look, the worse it gets. From a songwriting perspective, I think it's pretty good though because it contextualizes the singer as being " the satellite of love" orbiting and surveilling his lover. Got that classic Mick Ronson guitar line in there too.

The lyric is not what bugs me so much. I don't like the sing song nursery rhyme cadence and inane melody. It deplores me.

Actually I just listened to it again. Is that the same iconic Ronson riff from Man Who Sold the World? Reminds me of that. Practice your major scale. The best thing I can say about that bridge is that at least it is short.

I first heard that song from the Velvet Goldmine movie soundtrack. I bet you'd appreciate the other songs from it too.

I was lucky enough to see Lou play the album Berlin about 15/20 years ago with a full band including a horn section. There encore was Satellite of Love and Im not ashamed to say it I was in floods of tears by the end of it, truly one of the most moving and beautiful concert moments of life.

I actually prefer the Eurythmics cover to the original

> I deplore music fans give it a listen > deplore Also how did you come across this hidden gem of a song, we'll definitely give it a listen, theres no chance we haven't all heard it 5000 times on the radio, in films, from simply listening to the one of the most popular and acclaimed artists of the era, etc
