Comedy in the UK kind of had a huge lull in the early 2020s as the BBC started cutting the amount of comedy it funded. Over time other broadcasters have picked things back up but long gone are the golden days of the early 2010s when it comes to tv comedy.
I will shout out the comedy on radio 4 though, that stuff is still class.

Watched it and thought it was fine. Nowhere near the level of other British sketch comedies but those aren't usually live. Maybe the live-ness of the show is part of the appeal.
I'd never watched SNL before but I'd seen a few sketches online, never thought it was very good outside of a few standouts (the Papyrus sketch is good).
I had similar feelings about the UK version - nothing wowed me but there were a couple of good jokes and I like the cast so I can give it some goodwill and will keep watching.
The episode was really hurt by opening with an incredibly unfunny sketch. I can see that turning people away but it did get better as it went on.

Now maybe Britons understand why SNL US has lasted so long even in spite of fluctuating quality. The live part is exactly it.
23
tfhermobwoaywayMar 23, 2026
+3
But why is that so appealing?
3
RaptorpicklezzMar 23, 2026
+4
a) Anything can happen. Literally anything. Which is why the American version does a lot of sketches with dogs (in the early 80s it was chimpanzees), frequently books Ryan Gosling to host and uncontrollably laugh, and books mercurial musical acts.
b) The set decorators, makeup artists and film unit know how to put together really elaborate work in less than a week, so they’re constantly one-upping their past work, to congratulatory fans.
c) The sketches often have bad writing because the show is only assembled in less than a week, but get leeway because the cast members’ audacity combines with the aforementioned elaborate sets and makeup to overpower the writing. And if a truly well-written sketch makes it through to air, it often gets the accolades it deserves because of the low expectations and the knowledge that it was prepared in less than a week.
4
spongeboy1985Mar 23, 2026
+3
It’s the “anything can happen” nature of it. Often the writers will change dialogue on the actor so they are often saying something for the first time without any prep. I go into it quite a bit more in another comment. Weekend Update is probably where a lot of magic happens with the live format, and the anchors and cast members reading dialogue they have never seen before

That’s probably one of the better backhanded compliments you can hope for these days for the SNL political skits considering how much viewers seem to hate them now, including myself. At least dumb Hitler wasn’t actually shown in this one and we only heard his voice for a second.
7
MilesHighClub_Mar 23, 2026

> Maybe the live-ness of the show is part of the appeal.
I mean...yeah? It's the one thing that differentiates the show from anything else on TV
That's one reason why the comparisons to other sketch shows don't make sense. It's one of a kind in terms of the creative process and execution.
Yeah Chappelle's Show has a higher hit-to-miss ratio than SNL but Dave didn't turn around a 90 minute show from scratch from Tuesday to Saturday with a new host every week. And even then the sketches aren't gonna be as polished as they could be if you could do multiple takes and edit and rewrite over weeks to fine tune it. You get what you get even if it ends up being shit
It's not the most effective or efficient process but the charm of it pretty much *is* the show
14

I’m in the uk and not really got onboard with SNL. I know it’s impact on pop culture over the past 50 years. So was curious to see the uk version.
I agree about the opening sketch. It dragged on and on and then slammed the brakes on for shouting the “It’s Saturday night” by which point I was already wondering what the fuss was about and made the credits that followed feel even longer.
I felt like I’d been watching the show for nearly 15 mins and had more laughs from the adverts before it came on air.
What made it worse is what feels like the audience are being forced at gunpoint to laugh at every single thing.
Character breathes
Audience: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Character: Sir Kier…
Audience: HAAAAAAAAHAHAHA
Etc
2
ForWhomTheBoneBonesMar 23, 2026
+10
Ending the sketch with “LIVE FROM_____, IT’S SATURDAY NIGHT!” is the single biggest calling card for SNL. It’s really meant to wrap it up and get the audience/viewers excited. It’s the calling card that anything can happen, there’s no do-overs, come see if anything goes off the rails.
10
CartoonBeardyMar 23, 2026
+2
Thanks for the context. I appreciate it. Like I say I kinda bounced off SNL beyond its wider impact with things like Papyrus, the Blues Brothers, Wayne’s World, Ghostbusters etc. so its format is a mystery.
In this instance the fact that it came directly off the back off an extremely tedious sketch that didn’t really land within 10 seconds and then dragged on for further 10 minutes, the shout of Its Saturday night, felt like a ripcord being pulled to get out of a death spiral.
2
ForWhomTheBoneBonesMar 23, 2026
+2
Good sketch or bad sketch, it’s exactly that: a ripcord to get out of the sketch. It’s never really meant to be a punchline itself. Even the best SNL is a mixed bag, so I’m sure the good bits will float their way to the top of your social media over the coming weeks, whether you’re actively looking for it or not.

There's different areas of sketch comedy. I lean more towards prerecorded stuff because a lot more can be done to enhance the jokes. But the live staged comedy of SNL can be great with the right performers and writers
1
spongeboy1985Mar 23, 2026
+1
> Maybe the live-ness of the show is part of the appeal.
It is. Writers will often change the dialogue in order to get the actors to break. John Mulaney did this to Bill Hader a lot so much that one of his characters Steffon developed a tic where he would cover his mouth but it was just Bill hiding his laughter. The current Weekend Update (news segment) has the hosts sometimes write jokes for each other. They have never seen these jokes as they are reading them Michael Che who is black will often write jokes that make Co-host Colin Jost say racist stuff. His reactions are pretty funny.
> “You’re gonna get me murdered”
Jost will sometimes write jokes for Che making him seem down for police brutality among other this
Sometimes the dress reversal which us taped live in front of an audience earlier in the day will have versions of the sketches where there is more breaking so that version will be added to re-airing instead of the live version. One of the Debbie Downer sketches did that since it’s infamous for castmembers breaking.
Here is the original Debbie Downer sketch

It's not like they copy the US sketches.
Calling people dumb fucks for liking something different to you is pretty wild but I guess enjoy not watching any US made shows or movies.
What gems do you like?

Plenty of decent US shows. SNL is not one of them. It’s some of the worst comedy I’ve seen, to be honest.

You just said you don't need their exports.
It's just hit and miss, there's something for everyone in general (especially if you go back) but it does tend to lean towards the silly.
That being said it's just a platform for sketches, rather than needing to do exact copies.
