The beauty of Scooby-Doo is there is no shortage of reboots and reimaginings that can work. For every Velma you get A Pup Named Scooby-Doo! The characters fit such clear archetypes it’s tough to actually mess them up.

We just need to accept that this is gonna be *Riverdale* but for Scooby-Doo, and that's **fine.**
This is a cartoon that debuted in the late 1960s, and has more or less been tweaked or reimagined for new generations of kids and teens in every subsequent decade.
I think this is what any child-adjacent franchise needs to do in order to survive, and a new take on any of these things doesn't magically erase the old ones. A lot of the reimaginings are objectively better or richer than the older ones, too—*Beast Wars* and *Friendship is Magic* added so much more heart, character work, and depth compared to the original 1980s cartoons of *Transformers* and *My Little Pony*, for example.
Do I want to immediately tell Shaggy and Fred to get off my lawn? Yeah, sure. But I'm almost 40 years old. This isn't for me. And I'm much prefer to see things honestly trying to appeal to a new generation of young people, or at least be entertaining for all ages, rather than everything from my generation continue to just target a shrinking demographic of toxic and impossible-to-please Millennials and Gen Xers, like we've seen in everything from *Star Wars* to the pre-Gunn DCU.
I'd argue *that* was the biggest issue with the *Velma* show, if we're being honest. I don't care that they made her a Brown girl, or that the jokes leaned towards being bad more often than not. (Velma has been Asian before, and Scooby-Doo has had groan-worthy jokes since its first episode.)
It's the fact that they made it an R-Rated Show For Adults With Graphic Violence and Swearing! At that point, why would I watch it at all if I liked the original stuff or wanted to share it with my nieces and nephews? I'll just show them *Mystery Inc*, and if I want a crass and violent cartoon for adults, I've got everything from *Harley Quinn* to *The Venture Bros* (RIP) to watch on HBO Max alone.
In the wake of *Stranger Things* ending, it makes sense that Netflix is looking for other supernatural-teen-mystery franchises to take its place. This is as good of a bet as any.

It's definitely looking like it's going to be Riverdale crossed with Stranger Things based on what's been announced so far, which is fine I think. Scooby Doo being a bit of a campy YA mystery series has the potential to be really entertaining.

I disagree, there's definitely something wrong with adults getting worked up over stuff like this.
At the end of the day, these are corporate-owned IPs. They're not going to be preserved in amber. I grew up with a lot of this stuff too but who cares if they make new versions that I don't like or aren't for me? It doesn't change the experience I had with it growing up, and the classic versions still exist.
If anything, fans should be glad that things they love are being kept alive and introduced to new generations. Maybe that will lead to more people seeking out the classic stuff.

Star Wars is this for me.
I'm a fan of Star Wars, I've been a fan since I was an eight year-old kid nearly 30 years ago watching the Special Edition (GASP) for the first time.
I LOVE that they still make Star Wars stuff. Is it all good? No, I'd argue it's been that way since **the first movie** in a lot of ways lol. Is it *more Star Wars?* Yes. The franchise I've watched my whole life is still alive because people of new generations like the new stuff. And whatever the fanbase feels - there's still a lot of people who love Star Wars that have been longtime fans.
And if something comes out I don't love or don't care to keep watching, cool, I can look forward to the next thing and maybe they'll get it right the next time.
If people gave up on Star Wars at Solo, we would never have gotten *Andor*. Hell, I remember when people didn't look at the prequel movies with rose-tinted glasses. If the franchise died there (it almost did), we wouldn't have had half of some of the best stuff made in the franchise (video games/books/shows).

Scooby is not our childhood. It’s our syndicated reruns. You have to be 60 years old for it to be your childhood.

If you are millennial, do you consider any of the 60s and 70s shows on Nick at Night to be YOUR childhood? That’s insane.

Riverdale is actually a good template for scooby doo, i dont know why people keep saying its a bad thing. Riverdale got ridiculous in a way that would work for scooby doo.
Plus its an almost 60 year old franchise at this point. There have been countless animated movies and tv shows so far. Why is it bad for them to experiment every so often? Clearly Velma was a big fat miss but that doesnt mean this will be. Taking risks can go either way, it can be good or bad but we wont know until they try.

Can we get Matthew Lillard playing an older Shaggy? I don't care how they do it. The gang goes to the future and meet older versions of themselves (although getting Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising their roles might be challenging. Same with Linda Cardelini. Only Lillard seems to be still involved with the Scooby-Doo IP). Or some time paradox that older Shaggy ends up in the present.
It would be a cool way to pay respect to the person who has proudly carried the legacy of Shaggy in not only the early 2000s live-action films. But has also been the official voice of Shaggy Rogers in most of the newer animated show incarnations. He was passed the torch of the role after Casey Kasem (RIP) stopped voicing.

Love to see Maxwell as Fred. He was great in Lost in Space.
Also, took me a second to realize Abby is the same little girl from Ant-Man. Dang, I didn't realize it's been so long since it came out

I was a fan of the cartoon as a kid, but I hated the Live action movies (yes I know they are loved).
I hope this is a better version

It just means you got older and weren’t the audience anymore. My parent hated A Pup Named Scooby Doo and it’s of the same quality imo. They were just an adult and aged out of the audience.

I mean, I wouldn't want them to just completely recreate Mystery Inc, but something with a similar tone would be good. And there's nothing so far that says it won't, so you never know...

Only familiar with Maxwell Jenkins from this new batch of cast announcement.
Watched him in Lost in Space when he was a lot younger (his character was A LOT different from Fred). The show was below average, but his performance was among the standouts in the cast (along with his redhead sister, Ignacio Serricchio, and Parker Posey). Looking forward to see his interpretation of Fred and his dynamic with McKenna Grace!

I would highly recommend [Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1660055/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk) to any older Scooby Doo fans out there. Tons of Easter eggs, great inside jokes and running gags, and an awesome voice cast. My 7yr old discovered it on Netflix and we loved it.

McKenna Grace is blowing up so it’s kind of funny to see her in this cast with a lot of no-name actors. I thought when she was cast they were going to get some mostly familiar faces. Cast looks great tho! Just feels like McKenna is taking a step back here in her career than forward.

She’s good, but a little overexposed lately. I’m glad that she went straight to work as soon as she turned 18, as opposed to what most child stars do when they come of age. Hopefully, this will be a solid gig for a while.

Another remake where the people remaking it have no idea what the original is about. Scooby-Doo might be the most relevant cartoon for our current age. At its heart it is about the decline of America. The death of American factories and the loss of jobs. The loss of hope. The modern great depression.
Make a serious re-adaption using this as the heart of the movie. Shoot it in the rust belt using abandoned factories. Make the ghosts people who have lost their jobs. Make it bleak. Turn it into a found footage / documentary style movie.

bindersfull-ofwomenMar 18, 2026
I’m sorry you’re getting downvoted because I actually want to hear more about this.
I just thought it was about homeless people traveling around and getting high with their dog and the first person at the town they enter wants to kill them for some money plot they keep unraveling.
So basically a critique on capitalism.

Look at the original first season. It is rust belt america. All of the abandoned factories. Everything is derelict and abandoned. How everything is falling apart. It is the transition of from the dream and hope and idealism of the 60's to the moraise of the 70's.
There is a great graphic novel series that reimagines the Hannah Barbara cartoons. They reimagined Scooby Doo as a zombie apocalypse.

bindersfull-ofwomenMar 18, 2026
There’s a Season 1 playlist on YouTube. Everything is pretty rundown. The first episode seems to happen in a major city but people are living in a skyscraper with no walls. And the reason they leave for the mystery is because they are trying to rebuild the city.
I never noticed.
There’s also a laugh track which I don’t remember. I’m kinda engaged.

That they are in the same universe at the same time but one is rich and one is poor? I always thought that because they have the same products. It was never a theory for me, l just assumed it.
Or is there another?

My dude, the Scooby Doo franchise is insanely huge. Moreso than most people realize. The live action movies with FPJ, SMG, Linda Cardellini, and Matthew Lillard still hold up as good fun.

We don’t need this, guys.
For f*** sake… we don’t need a Buffy reboot, or a Firefly reboot, what we need is NEW. NOT OLD. NEW.
NEW NEW. EVERGREEN IP.
ARE WE NOT TIRED!?
