The killer in the most recent one didn’t even really make sense. It made so little sense that it’s the first time I was able to feel confident about clocking the killer pretty early on, “it’s probably this person because it literally makes no sense and it subverts expectations.” I mean I’m not asking for some crazy lore that has zero plot holes, I know they’re just silly empty horror movies, but I walked out kind of annoyed how lazy the setup was.

It's f****** crazy that when someone tried to explain the rules of slasher movies in 7 one of the characters just says "nah we're not doing that this time" and the rest of the movie is a totally straightforward shitty slasher movie.

At least Stab movies look fun and over the top (from the limited stuff we see of them). Scream has just gotten tired. I wish they’d make a Stab movie. That would allow them to lean into crazier stuff.

7 was so bad. I thought it was >!mom and son at first when the kid said he was trying to make a podcast. Thought the mom and kid were trying to get some fame and something to talk about to get the pod off the ground because they were struggling financially or something. Nah, the killers were just crazy. I know 6 had a family of killers so it might have seemed similar but it was so lazy mate. So lazy.!<

So you're really saying 7 felt like Stab and the others were valiant efforts. The outcome of 7 is disappointing but they can so easily bounce back.

The last few to me just feel like they don't quite get what the series is. They're supposed to be a bit tongue and cheek and satirical but those elements are borderline non-existent in the last two. The last one missed what I thought was a pretty obvious open goal to satirise how every other horror film these days is about intergenerational trauma. They're pretty much completely standard slasher films with just a little winking to the audience now.

Ghostface is one of the only slashers that could literally be anyone, anywhere. Anybody can put on the mask and be Ghostface for a movie but they keep it confined to people associated with the original characters.

They didn’t even link the killers that closely in 7. They have been pretty mid since 2. Some better than others but none have ever captured the feel and suspense of the first.

I dunno, 5 was basically just Force Awakens for the franchise. Mediocre reboot with poorly written melodrama trying to mimic Williamson. 6 was a step forward in my opinion, but they were on the same level as 7 for me. Not awful, but not good. 4 was probably the last "great" movie in the series. My second favorite to the original, by far.

I watched seven last night. There was one fun kill (the one involving a beer tap) but otherwise the movie was hot garbage. What the f*** was going on with Sydney's house renovation? Were they adding four additional wings to their mansion that was paid for by a bakery owner and a police chief?

7 was great imo but i will never let go bc i always love these movies.

In my opinion, they can salvage Scream 7 retroactively by doing three things: 1) Bring back the sisters from 5 and 6 who befriend Sidney's daughter, forming a new trio of main characters to have multiple movies with onward. 2) Kill Sidney off in the next movie's post-credit scene. Satirize the Scream movies by opening Scream 8 straight into the actual movie without the "fake out" opening. Jump right into the trio being terrorized and at the end of the movie you cut to a post-credit where Sidney gets killed and that becomes the "fake out" moment of Scream 8. You don't get anyone dying at the start because you get a massive death at the very end. Mocking the series' creation of said trope. Scream 9 can open immediately from the trio finding Sidney dead and be rid of the fake out openings for good. 3) Take the series to a new location again and be creative with the environmental kills. And to a lesser extent, a bonus 4th... Bring back Stu *for real*. I'd argue most people went because they were happy to hear Lillard was back finally only to get psyched out as to why. But you can salvage the Scream 7 killer reveals by having Stu been behind them the entire time and having created a Ghostface Cult and cultivated it through online websites. Motivating new killers to become famous or seek revenge by helping them with hints.

Yup. Just ridiculous at this point. And the fandom has become deranged. They showed up in numbers to support mid to prove some kind of point, whatever it was. At the end of the day it was vomit in a dog bowl and they ate it up. Not sure why they instead aren't demanding a higher quality movie, but hey, we live in weird times!

To be fair after they booted the star of 5 and 6 out, they didn't really have the trajectory to keep going down the path they were going. If they tried it and it wasn't great, it would have just been "See see see" They kind of need to retreat to the core thing and just say "Well this is where the OG crew ties in the most"

A "Stab" convention taking place internationally would be a nice change of pace for a setting.

I think it’s time to take this franchise to outer space. How about a private rocket flight to a hotel space station full of rich assholes. And then we have one character who’s like a space bellhop or works for the space concierge and she’s somewhat likeable (in space!) as our protagonist. Then the space guests start getting killed, someone has to go outside the space station to fix something, oxygen leaks and they all have to move to different compartments (in space!). They’re suspicious that it’s the poor space hotel staff people doing the killings because f*** rich people (in space!), but then it turns out it’s Jeff Bezos and his wife who is killing off these rich business leaders for some business reason. But in space. In Scream… no one can hear you space.

I still don't understand what the killers motive was or who they were or I guess why it matters who they are.

What a wild choice it'd be for Johnson to direct the 8th film in two different franchises

The biggest criticism of 7 (the reveal and motives) aren't on him, that was the writing. The weakest part of the directing was the AI sequences, especially how lackluster and unimpactful the cameos of Dewey and the previous killers were. But, that aside, there were some really interesting and effective directing choices in 7. The first half of the movie was very good.

I think he said 7 was a one and done and he’s moving onto other things.

Once upon a time I really thought this series would truly stop at the trilogy mark. Scream 3 wasn't the best story in the world, but they did wrap it up nicely in the end. Fast-forward to 2010 I was surprised a 4th movie was on the way.

Same. It also didn't help that I knew who had done it. Usually with Scream it is impossible to know for sure but this time it was very obvious. Which still could have worked if the surprise was in the motive but that was just dumb shit.

It certainly was the weakest motive of them all. What got me was the daughter's inability to learn from her mistakes after making them MULTIPLE TIMES.

I actually liked the fact that MASSIVE SPOILERS The motivation was related to Sidney in a unique way. It wasn't something familial and it had nothing to do with movies but instead and undertalked about part of her life that is super important to her character. I also loved the performance in spite of how short it was. I just hated the fact that they teased Stu and it ended up having nothing to do with him. It just makes a lot of the movie feel nonsensical.

Some of the kills were fun, but the killers' motivation was laughably weak. And Courtney Cox and the Meeks twins added nothing by being there, they were there just to be there.

KW only rewrote some dialogue for scream 7. Mostly stuff with sidney and tatums relationship. The rest was all Guy Busick.

We're talking about a meta slasher movie franchise, but even then you get to a point where its like "come on, she can't survive this SIX times!" I really thought Wes was going all the way in Scream 4 after what happens to her during the climax.
