i’ll never forget the impact this had on me watching this episode as a kid, you think it’s just a regular ep then suddenly this happens and you have no idea what just hit you so suddenly. incredible writing and the episode after where dr cox says thanks and refers to him as “JD” and touches his shoulder, remains one of my favourite moments in the series.

I think about this one and Cox's freak-out after the third rabies patient dies a _lot_. This goofy-ass show comes hard when it wants you to feel human.

I can’t hear How To Save a Life without immediately thinking of that episode

Merc931 Mar 22, 2026 +273
Hospital drama producers were rubbing their hands together like flies when that song dropped.
273
wildwolfay5 Mar 22, 2026 +68
Grays anatomy abused the hell out of it
68
fa-jita Mar 23, 2026 +19
That and Snow Patrol Chasing Cars. Great song. Can’t listen to it now. Thankfully that whole album is fabulous.
19
rbarton812 Mar 23, 2026 +6
Whenever the song comes on, my wife and I have a debate about which show used it better, Scrubs or Greys. I contend that people remember Scrubs' use of it a hell of a lot more than Greys'.
6
PolPotbelly Mar 22, 2026 +31
I think Ain't no Reason by Brett Dennen was also in at least 2 hospital shows.
31
pantspuppet Mar 22, 2026 +17
This was used in an episode of House for sure
17
plurdle Mar 22, 2026 +100
Hits even harder when you realize the song is about how to save a troubled person’s life from suicide. Dr Cox was in a dark dark place. The music is this show was always spot on and a show in itself.
100
racerx2oo3 Mar 23, 2026 +6
The song always comes across as more of a person staging an intervention than a suicide prevention.
6
Kamakaziturtle Mar 23, 2026 +3
Not necessarily suicide, but generally trying and failing to help someone spiraling out of control in general. Was written from Slades personal experience doing some mentoring.
3
El_John_Nada Mar 22, 2026 +47
Yeah, it's mostly associated with Grey's anatomy because they used it to the bone, but it was so much more impactful in Scrubs.
47
captainrex Mar 22, 2026 +34
Especially because they only used it once (and then jokingly three seconds of it as a fake-out during the clip show episode)
34
BlackSpinedPlinketto Mar 22, 2026 +11
All I hear when I think of Grey’s Anatomy is ‘*and I will try….. to fix you*’.

When I hear the song I always think of when I came home from work one day, I found my dad throwing up in a bin. He was jaundice, hadn't eaten anything all day. I took him to hospital, stayed with him until 5am. I was very tired and needed sleep, I told him I would come see him the next day. I went home and went to bed. Woke up to a call about noon from the hospital saying he was asking for me and there was nothing they could do. I rushed to the hospital but it was too late. I always imagined when I listened to that song that I could have done something else, brought him to hospital earlier, noticed the yellow eyes earlier. Just done something and he would have lived longer. He died of sepsis and a heart attack, there likely was nothing I could have done but it's still there at the back of my head.

I'm sorry for your loss and your experience. You did the best you could and he knew that!
6
Rancillium Mar 23, 2026 +4
I’m sorry:( This reminds me of how I lost my mom. I beat myself up for a while off and on. Your dad loved you and would understand. We were young. You didn’t really know what would happen and it’s unlikely anyone did. Anyway, thank you for sharing that. Take care♥️

Scrubs introduced me to so many amazing bands.

Why I love this show so much - the ability to make you laugh and then emotionally punch you in the gut. [Much like another medical show, but one that took place during the Korean War.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C29nlm_7AUk)
23
TotalSavage Mar 22, 2026 +16
The “yeah, I know” is an all-timer. What a powerful performance and an amazing show.

I literally watch this every couple months on YouTube. The crashout is sooo good with “How to save a life” playing.
7
pendletonskyforce Mar 22, 2026 +7
Damn that sounds horrible that the rabies patient dies alot.
7
mike_pants Mar 22, 2026 +5
It's triple fatal.
5
MercenaryCow Mar 22, 2026 +8
God I really hope the reboot can grab just one single moment like these that hit you in the feels before it inevitably dies off.
8
broadsword_1 Mar 23, 2026 +5
Cox talking to JD in the second half of the first ep gave me the same vibes - Cox gets quieter the more serious he's talking. Turk's lines on his burnout in ep2 were really good as well. In both cases it feels like they're just planting the seeds for now, just want to let the show set itself up before continuing those threads more.
5
Savetheokami Mar 23, 2026 +2
First episode made me a bit teary eyed.
2
POWBOOMBANG Mar 22, 2026 +73
I think the shoulder touch episode is later after Cox's patients die from rabies
73
HerbaDerbaSchnerba Mar 22, 2026 +43
That is correct. The episodes are in season 5. “My Lunch” and “My Fallen Idol.”
43
numbr87 Mar 22, 2026 +21
Wait they're BOTH in season 5? What was wrong with the writers that year?!
21
HerbaDerbaSchnerba Mar 22, 2026 +24
Those episodes are back to back, too.
24
EchoesofIllyria Mar 22, 2026 +23
Yeah because they’re the same story lol
23
HerbaDerbaSchnerba Mar 22, 2026 +5
Lol I know, I was just adding to their point.
5
EchoesofIllyria Mar 22, 2026 +8
I mean they’re basically a two parter.
8
bros402 Mar 22, 2026 +3
My Screw Up was in season 3.
3
luismt2 Mar 22, 2026 +44
yeah that episode hits out of nowhere, one of those moments that just stays with you
44
scameron1 Mar 22, 2026 +20
I agree. I remember watching it for the first time and thinking it was a normal episode and then this surprised the heck out of me. Still one of those moments that stick with me
20
Business_Guidance765 Mar 22, 2026 +21
it’s crazy how it flips from a normal episode to something really heavy in seconds. makes you appreciate how well they built up to it without you even noticing
21
clycoman Mar 22, 2026 +19
Thats why Scrubs gets a lot of comparisons to M*A*S*H. Very silly comedy with serious situations and both are blended well.
19
InnocentTailor Mar 22, 2026 +7
My opinion exactly. They are hilarious, but also remember that they’re medical shows where people can die - not as grim as The Pitt and not as dorky as St. Denis Medical.
7
Joebranflakes Mar 22, 2026 +4
This episode is like the Chicken episode but it just lands the revelation of the truth so much better.
4
InevitablyBored Mar 22, 2026 +10
One of the most impactful moments in television history for me. Insane how well written this show was.
10
DoctorDollars Mar 22, 2026 +6
I was 13 years old and this would play on public access tv and it never caught my attention until “my old lady” was playing and it made me cry 😭
6
HeinziSchmolke Mar 22, 2026 +5
That wasn't the episode after this one. That was the second part of the two-parter from season 5 where Dr. Cox quits because he made a wrong call that killed 5 patients. The best episodes from season 5 and equally as powerful.
5
ACrask Mar 22, 2026 +3
That’s my number one favorite moment in the entire show.
3
0ttoChriek Mar 22, 2026 +278
Bill Lawrence knows exactly how to get you, and his music choices amplify every emotion. Scrubs was full of moments like this, but this is probably the best.
278
gt12a Mar 22, 2026 +123
On the podcast, they said his wife picked a lot of the music on the show (cox ex wife)
123
oPlaiD Mar 22, 2026 +97
Christa Miller is also doing that (and acting) in Shrinking and she's doing a very good job with it again.
97
flcinusa Mar 22, 2026 +42
Her character even says that everyone loves her playlists
42
OrlandoNE Mar 23, 2026 +6
I would say she's excellent at picking songs. Both Rolling Stones and ELO at the season 3 premiere were 10/10 choices. And REM recently. Chefs kiss.
6
spinnaker989 Mar 22, 2026 +46
All the more reason to make sure you’re watching from a source that still has the original music. Some streamers have changed a lot of the music, I assume for royalty reasons
46
0ttoChriek Mar 22, 2026 +21
The reason I bought Scrubs on DVD was because I watched some episodes on Disney+ and the music had all changed.
21
flcinusa Mar 22, 2026 +16
*imaging Turks air band audition without BBD's Poison* *Shudders*
16
cycoivan Mar 23, 2026 +4
The ones on Hulu AFAIK have the original music
4
fred11551 Mar 23, 2026 +2
Which songs had changed? All the ones I remember Are You Having a Good Time, How to Save a Life, Sideways, Hallelujah were all there
2
wartopuk Mar 23, 2026 +2
Even the DVD doesn't have the original TV music. There is a page somewhere that shows the music changes between all the versions. The DVD isn't as much obviously but still a few songs changed.
2
mudokin Mar 22, 2026 +13
Licenses ran out, they could have renegotiated to extend them, but getting other songs probably was cheaper.
13
Dan_Of_Time Mar 22, 2026 +20
> Licenses ran out, they could have renegotiated to extend them, but getting other songs probably was cheaper. Bill Lawrence really wants to get the old music back in. I believe he was trying to get something done about it a while ago when he was negotiating the new show deal. It's possible they will do something eventually.
20
daymanahhhahhhhhh Mar 22, 2026 +4
Does Hulu have the original songs?
4
spinnaker989 Mar 22, 2026 +4
Sadly no. Like 50% of them were changed last I watched. Most didn't make that big of a difference to me but there were a few that were absolutely egregious IMO
4
Juice___Springsteen Mar 23, 2026 +12
Scrubs music was incredibly important for me in my teens and early twenties. Introduced me to so much amazing artists and music that I still listen to 20 years later.
12
0ttoChriek Mar 23, 2026 +5
Yep. I first heard The Shins on Scrubs, and am forever thankful for it. A bunch of other artists as well.
5
Carrot42 Mar 23, 2026 +4
I discovered The Shins through Zach Braff's movie "Garden State". When Natalie Portman's character makes his listen to The Shins because it will change his life.
4
VagueGooseberry Mar 22, 2026 +8
She created the job of Music Supervisor for herself on the show.
8
rtb001 Mar 23, 2026 +7
Braff claims that this song, "Winter", was the first (and supposedly ONLY) song Joshua Radin had ever written when it was selected for this episode, which is kind of wild.
7
beakersandbitches Mar 23, 2026 +2
When I rewatched the series on streaming years ago, I was so disappointed it didn't hit the same. Then I realized that it was because the soundtrack was different. Something about getting the streaming rights to the music.
2
rnilf Mar 22, 2026 +617
Someone pointed out to me that it's pretty obvious once you notice Brendan Fraser no longer has his camera, which the show made a point to focus on beforehand.
617
NytMuvz Mar 22, 2026 +537
Yeah, Cox makes a comment about him always taking photos and he says something like "I'll take photos until the day I die" and then the camera's gone.
537
Business_Guidance765 Mar 22, 2026 +221
It’s one of those details you don’t think twice about until everything clicks and then it just wrecks you
221
hotmugglehealer Mar 23, 2026 +19
The scene that shows how great the writing team was is where Brandon is standing behind (but obviously not there) Elliot and making faces at Cox so he keeps looking at him while talking to her which causes her to turn around and look almost right at him. She sees no one behind her gets angry and leaves. But the audience thinks she saw brandon. Up until that point no one else interacts with him.
19
Exact-Sheepherder797 Mar 23, 2026 +17
I honestly hadn't noticed that in the million times I've watched the series. Nice touch.
17
Eternlgladiator Mar 22, 2026 +126
I’ve seen it a few times and I think it’s also more clear he’s only interacting with cox and nobody else. It’s subtle but it’s there. Stuff that’s easier to catch when you’re looking for it but so easy to miss in the moment.
126
Puzzleheaded_Fix594 Mar 22, 2026 +63
You also see JD working with the patient that they bait you into thinking is the patient that goes into cardiac arrest.
63
lanceturley Mar 23, 2026 +54
The part where Ben is behind Elliot mocking her is a great bit of misdirection. She turns around to see what Cox is laughing about and you naturally assume that she's looking right at Ben, but it's not until later that you realize she's confused because there's nothing there. All three actors sell it so well.
54
Lousy_Username Mar 23, 2026 +20
There are a few clues interspersed throughout the episode, like a sign in the background that literally says "PAY ATTENTION!" when Ben and Perry are speaking to each other.
20
Citizen51 Mar 23, 2026 +11
To be fair, the Janitor doesn't interact with a single other character except for JD until Season 2. They were considering writing him as a figment of JD's imagination but changed their mind before committing to the bit
11
Realistic_Village184 Mar 23, 2026 +12
That's not true, though. The Janitor interacts with other characters in Season 1.
12
escof Mar 23, 2026 +6
For the first few episodes at leas the people he's interacting with don't react back to him.
6
luismt2 Mar 22, 2026 +94
once you know that detail it’s impossible to miss, but first watch it completely blindsides you
94
SnappyTofu Mar 22, 2026 +13
Like when Perd Hapley realized he wasn’t carrying a microphone
13
Nimonic Mar 23, 2026 +9
The story of this anecdote is that it's for a different TV series.
9
adorablesexypants Mar 22, 2026 +115
Here is the thing about this scene. It only works if you have seen Scrubs. It is perhaps one of the best pieces of writing but this and Cox’s freak out in the later seasons only hurt so much because you have taken the time to get to know the characters. This feels so out of place because it’s one of the few times where we don’t have a gag, we don’t have quirky music, and JD’s appearance is measured, something I think Braf should get props for. But every time I have convinced someone to give Scrubs a try, they always get pissed or cry with me at this scene and it always hurts. There is no joke. There is no monologue. Just those left dealing with grief in that moment.
115
Rathemon Mar 22, 2026 +36
But I think that is the secret to the success of scrubs.. its goofy and funny but there is just enough sincerity and seriousness to make it hit home. A lot of the monologue brings the goofiness down and hits you in the feels.
36
Hugh_Jass_Clouds Mar 23, 2026 +5
I think Scrubs and MASH hit a lot of the same tones. Just different shows for different generations. I love both the shows, and Scrubs barrows a lot from MASH while holding its own as something that lands better for a younger generation.
5
Rathemon Mar 23, 2026 +2
I agree and love both of them even though MASH was before my time
2
ActionFilmsFan1995 Mar 22, 2026 +249
Second favorite moment of the whole show, only the rabies one beats it, and it’s very close.
249
luismt2 Mar 22, 2026 +117
the rabies one is brutal too but this one just lingers way longer for me, hits different every time
117
TorkBombs Mar 23, 2026 +64
Doesn't get talked about enough but [Michael J Fox playing the OCD doctor](https://youtu.be/7kfLdwL1t98?si=K-f-qiHj6poRtuRt) who can't stop washing his hands. "This is a weak moment. Nobody's supposed to see this." As a reminder that everyone is going through something.
64
noelcowards Mar 23, 2026 +8
As someone with OCD, this is what I always point to as the best representation in media. Nothing else has made me feel truly seen.
8
Accomplished_Smile23 Mar 23, 2026 +10
For me, Fox's character is so well written because it's not just about washing his hands, it's about washing his hands the "right" way. I'm just glad Scrubs represented OCD as a compulsion of rituals & need for things to feel "right" than to simply rely on the old, outdated idea that it's just a germaphobe or cleanliness thing.

PadishahEmperor Mar 23, 2026 +2

2
chewytime Mar 22, 2026 +30
The rabies scene is my number 1 moment. It’s one of the reasons why the song How to Save a Life still resonates with me and makes me feel something even after all these years.
30
stacecom Mar 22, 2026 +11
Also the one where Cabbage accidentally infects one of JD's patience due to poor hand hygiene.
11

patricksaurus Mar 22, 2026 +52
A gut punch transmitted through television over 22 minutes.
52
BeerGogglesFTW Mar 22, 2026 +192
This one gets all the attention, because of the surprise factor. Good episode. Brendan Fraser. But for me, the scene in Scrubs that hits the hardest is when they lose all of those patients to the rabies infected organs and it breaks Dr Cox.
192
luismt2 Mar 22, 2026 +49
Different kind of pain than this one but it sticks with you the same way
49
terraphantm Mar 22, 2026 +21
The one where they reveal Ben's diagnosis was great too, especially if you're in the business. I think every doctor has had that patient where they knew the answer but clung onto the tiniest hope that they were wrong.
21
HerbaDerbaSchnerba Mar 22, 2026 +34
That’s my favorite episode. The “B-plot” in that one is The Todd’s gay arc. Which ends hilariously.
34
captainrex Mar 22, 2026 +19
And Todd’s arc ends immediately before the scene where the three patients start dying, which is insane tonal whiplash
19
PizzaWhole9323 Mar 23, 2026 +2
"what are you!?!" "I'm the todd!!" Reddit five! ✋

I don’t know, this show could get very serious. Carla yelling at JD that he was pressuring her to be something she isn’t, the episode where Richard Kind, the hypochondriac, is diagnosed with cancer, etc
6

michael j fox and the handwashing breakdown is another major gut–punch of a moment

A moment in television history.
101
ViciousNakedMoleRat Mar 22, 2026 +55
I miss this era of TV and one part I miss the most is the music. In the 00s, there were all these shows that featured relatively random bands and musicians, not for commercial purposes, but simply because they had good songs, and I was introduced to so many artists that I ended up listening to for years (decades now). The O.C. is especially known for it, but Scrubs and other shows also played a big part.
55
huskersax Mar 22, 2026 +27
mmmmm whatcha say
27
BlacknRedtilDead Mar 22, 2026 +8
I only read the first part of your comment and the OC immediately came to the front of my brain.

Christa Miller is often Bill Lawrence’s music supervisor.
14
raysofdavies Mar 22, 2026 +5
And Zach Braff suggested the theme
5
CoyKitsune Mar 23, 2026 +2
Hearing Joshua Radin - Winter in this scene really brought me back. His songs punctuated many emotional moments in TV back then. I listened to his first album so many times
2
luismt2 Mar 22, 2026 +10
One of those scenes you remember exactly where you were when you first saw it
10
HeyItsChase Mar 22, 2026 +24
Scrubs is the greatest. I'm really enjoying the new season. I miss Dr. Cox a lot but its great to be back.
24
broadsword_1 Mar 23, 2026 +5
He's got 2 eps still in the tank. Am hoping it's a "bored with retirement, coming back as a doctor for S2" arc.

59
Joey-WilcoXXX Mar 22, 2026 +31
I wish Rental Family got more attention. It was a great movie.
31
buttfacenosehead Mar 22, 2026 +6
i thought the same. awesome movie!
6
wayupinthetree Mar 23, 2026 +5
Agreed. One of the best movies I have seen in a long time. You think you know where its heading, then it moves in new and surprising, but well grounded, ways.
5
GamingTatertot Mar 22, 2026 +3
I really enjoyed it - I remember seeing the original trailer and thinking it seemed like a really fucked up concept but I think the movie handles the morals of the situation a lot better than I would have expected
3
xnodesirex Mar 23, 2026 +2
I wish it was a TV series. Would love 8 or 10 hour long episodes instead of 90 minutes.
2

He was assaulted by Philip Berk, the South African president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Berk even admitted it in a memoir, before taking it back when the whole thing blew up.
10
ster1ing Mar 22, 2026 +41
This episode ruins me every time I see it. From the first time I saw it as a teen who’s lost nobody to now where I’ve lost too many. Brendan Fraiser played his role so well.
41
Thebaldsasquatch Mar 22, 2026 +17
Brendan Frazier really is amazing. His ability to make you care somehow about EVERY character he plays, even the psycho murderer in that one obscure as hell movie, is outstanding. Not to mention just being, by all accounts, and really decent, nice guy. He reminds me of a younger Tom Hanks.
17
Rathemon Mar 22, 2026 +7
Have you seen rental family? Its some of his latest work and I really enjoyed it.
7
alexsings Mar 22, 2026 +29
One of the best scenes in the best show in my little world. Also.... The scene when Dr Cox loses the rabies patient and he loses it is absolutely fantastic.

This scene absolutely blew me away the first time I saw it and this was before I had a DVR, so I couldn’t immediately rewind it and watch it again to figure out what I missed.

I remember watching this and audibly gasping when the reveal dropped. I did *not* see it coming in the slightest.

This, the ending to Boy Meets World and the ending to The Good Place are the three times I've been choked up during a. TV show.

I'm enjoying the Scrubs reboot, but Dr. Cox's absence is sorely felt

Chiguy2792 Mar 23, 2026 +2
I enjoyed what they did with his character, but I understand.

I think the dog episode of Futurama and this storyline are probably the best examples of TV that gutted a whole generation.

Diamondback424 Mar 22, 2026 +12
Could you please not *intentionally* ruin my day?

luismt2 Mar 22, 2026 +7
😂 sorry, this scene doesnt ask for permission, it just shows up and wrecks you

Diamondback424 Mar 22, 2026 +3
this and Seymour the dog in Futurama can destroy me on a moment's notice.

dpman48 Mar 22, 2026 +5
The futurama one that really gets me is fry’s nephew with the 7-leaf clover. Named for his uncle. To honor his spirit.

Katsu_Vohlakari Mar 22, 2026 +5
I've only seen the episode once but I'm happy to have seen it, and experienced it. Rarely does TV make you feel something so intensely as scenes like that.

SpicyAfrican Mar 22, 2026 +7
I’m rewatching a lot of old Scrubs episodes since I’m enjoying the revival so much, and it’s interesting just how much story they pack into 20 minutes. This episode is a prime example of that, with enough time for a B-plot and some jokes.

InnocentTailor Mar 22, 2026 +5
They’re well paced and efficient with time - no wasted space overall.

Nugnip Mar 22, 2026 +10
This might be the all time most brillant minute of television.

it’s wild how just that moment can flip everything you thought you were watching, hits even harder on a rewatch

Thank you Netflix for showing them at the funeral for the episode preview. The whole time I’m expecting them to go to one, so it wasn’t a twist when they did.

I've been so traumatized by Bill Lawrence over the years that this season on Shrinking when Derek had to have emergency heart surgery, I had to stop the show, cause I started to cry and was like, "DON'T YOU DO THIS TO ME, BILL! DON'T YOU DARE." The guy has traumatized me one too many times, and Derek is the perfect Woobie you kill off.

I’m right there with you. I thought for sure he was a goner.

I just watched this one again. Once you know, it's very clear what's happening on rewatch, but damn if it still doesn't hit like a ton of bricks.

There’s a realism to death in Scrubs which I think elevates it beyond other medical shows. Sometimes death is profound, but most of the time it’s just death, without meaning or sense. The episode with the three patients, the one with the old lady who has done it all and is ready to die, is a fantastic episode.

TheModRnPatriot Mar 23, 2026 +3
I never finished this show, but I think im about to go back and watch it. This show was so good. It had an insane way of grounding you after all the antics. Top 10 for sure.

Hemicrusher Mar 23, 2026 +3
The hospital they filmed Scrubs in was about a mile from my house. It was torn down, and is now an apartment building. It was also used in the movie Magnolia, during the frog scenes. Around 1995, I was taken to the emergency there after a motorcycle accident.

Such a punch in the gut to watch this for the first time

FoolishBeginnings Mar 23, 2026 +3
Not gonna watch it. Not because it’s bad television. It’s great television. It’s the only scene I’ve ever watched from a Tv show that will break me down like a blubbering little baby every time.

Listen to the “Fake Doctors, Real Friends” podcast to learn more about this episode. Joshua Radin is on hand to discuss “the song.” In another episode Brendan Fraser talks about his first season appearance. One of the things I love most about his show is it's ability to make you laugh and cry in the same episode. Will always be a top 5 for me.

nyjac757 Mar 23, 2026 +2
As silly as this show was, it had many moments like this that will gut punch you.

For anyone wanting to know the song: Winter by Joshua Radin Zach Braff was actually friends with the artist and asked that his song be used for this scene.

I think this was the episode where the show Ascended.

crimson777 Mar 23, 2026 +2
I hope the revival doesn’t try too hard to replicate this and lets the truly sad stuff come naturally. It’s an incredible revival so far and I don’t THINK they’d do this but I could see them having the inclination to just dive in and try and get a super sad moment already.
2
studiesinsilver Mar 23, 2026 +2
No show made me cry like scrubs.
