The problem with ATC understaffing is that you can't simply hire a bunch of new people and have them start tomorrow. It takes a relatively long time to vet and train people before you can trust them to do the job. And in case anyone is getting ideas: No the US military doesn't have nearly enough people trained for this to make up the shortfall.
You also can't use AI or any such nonsense.
You need to hire new controllers and keep existing ones.
The problem is that this is a high stress job, where mandatory overtime is the norm and where pay does not reflect the work people are asked to do. Regular government shutdown and chain jankings don't really help either. (Also thanks to Reagan controllers can't unionize.)
This is an issue that needs to have money thrown at it in a long term bipartisan way and not be tucked with anymore.
Between government shutdown, Doge nonsense and efforts like relocating controllers away from airports and having them do the job in lower cost of living areas for less money remotely over non-redundant connections, you are making it fairly unattractive to work high stress jobs with mandatory overtime.

Most of this was accurate. We do have a union, NATCA (National Air Traffic Controllers Association), but they do not have much weight in negotiations since legally we can not strike. Right now the leadership is just fighting to keep the right to represent controllers and the duty time they get to represent controllers instead of fighting for actual controller benefits and working conditions.
The moving part is during the initial hiring. You apply for the job and they can send you anywhere in the country with no guarantee to move back ever.
55

I feel like having to relocate to some random part of the country to work at an airport of their choosing is reason enough to make staffing difficult. Tack of high stress, over worked and underpaid and I’m surprised they get any applicants at all.

Yes. It's literally offered as a 4 year degree program at Kent State University (one of the few or only Universities in the country to offer it I think). Even then you need to do a months long FAA training program after graduation. The alternative is several years of pilot experience then take the govt program
16
rackball206Mar 24, 2026
+1
The problem with those degrees is they dont even mean youll make it as a controller. You still have to go through on the job training. All the knowledge you gain from schooling might gove you a better understanding of the concepts of aviation and the NAS but mean jack shit when you actually start doing the job. Most facilities it will take at minimum a year to get fully certified AFTER going through the whole hiring process. Typically its going to be at least a couple years from applying to getting a job and being certified.
1
m312vinMar 24, 2026

4 year degree is a waste of time. The only way to learn ATC is OJT. Also pilot experience is absolutely unnecessary. I saw more pilots wash out at the academy than regular joes off the street. 17 years as an FPL ATCS at ZJX.

They don’t realize that these are skilled government jobs and they trained intensively to do them. They didn’t just grab people off the street and then these people need all the sleep. 7
billbrasky21Mar 23, 2026

No, having only one or two controllers on duty at night is common. In a period with average traffic, in a lot towers, you would have maybe a half dozen. At really big airports with heavy traffic, you could have 10-12. Maybe somewhere like ATL could get even higher, I’m not sure. There aren’t really “assistants”.

Pilot here. This is common during off peak times to have one controller working both positions - tower (traffic on runways and within a few miles of the airport) and ground (taxiing traffic). Departure/arrival info suggests this was one of those times. There were different controllers working approach into the broader New York airspace.
I genuinely don’t think this one can be pinned on understaffing. Unfortunately, this guy was distracted by what was going on with United on the ramp, and made a mistake.

I was obsessed with the Real World series back in the day.
Whereas as the earlier seasons had the cast do their own thing, the later seasons had them work together (radio station, starting a business, etc.) to build group cohesion or drama. What I remember best about the Boston season was the cast was tutoring inner city kids at an after school program.
There was even a book covering the various seasons. The head of the after-school program was asked to evaluate how well the various cast members contributed to the program. He said that Sean basically phoned it on during the first half of the season and did next to nothing. I think when the manager said he wouldn't get school credit (can't remember), Sean contributed for the second half.
When it was all said and done, the manager gave him an A grade. A **f****** A!!!!!!** Thinking back to reading the RW book at the Borders bookstore, I still get steamed thinking about it. At best, he deserved a B or a C, but because of his white privilege and half-assed effort and doing nothing for half the show, this moron keeps falling up the corporate and political ladder.
What's worse is that he and his tramp-stamp wife are unleashing an infinite number of morons on this world by continuing to procreate. He and Rachel are the biggest case for eugenics I have ever seen.

You mean to tell me that one of the stupidest people to ever come out on an MTV reality show isn't good at being transportation secretary. I am completely shocked. On a side note dude seemed like a very likeable person but dear god he was as dumb as a rock

Fun fact about Sean Duffy, he used to be a Wisconsin House Rep before he resigned after his daughter was born with heart problems.
It's so cute that Duffy honors his daughter by working for a man with a defective heart.

Another fun fact, according to some of his cast mates on Real World/Road Rules - Sean Duffy loves cocaine. A great deal.

He also said multiple times it was a CJR but it’s a CRJ. I guess not a huge thing in the grand scheme but just show his lack of attention to detail/lack of ability to give a shit

Last week Duffy was attempting to troll Newsom about a wildlife bridge under construction in the Malibu area, but today he's taking about working together and federal-state-local partnerships.
Just like his boss constantly trolls European nations and then talks bigly about working together in Iran

The first crash (the helicopter one) I wouldn't pin on him specifically, that was years in the making and in the first week or so of the term.
This one, however, is an entirely different story and can be directly linked to a shortage of controllers -- a known issue for which no solution is even being proposed or debated.
And no, Grok / AI is should not do air traffic control anytime soon.

Woah... C'mon people! Let's pump the brakes on the Sean Duffy hate here, m'kay? Let's not forget that he also advocated for people to get dressed up fancy like for flying to combat the long security wait times.
So there's that.

I was just thinking how this would be breathless, non-stop Pete coverage during the Biden years. Dominating narrative on Fox News, and even in the mainstream press (although they wouldn't declare it, they'd just state "people are asking the question").
Took me almost the entire day to see this today.

ATC has been on mandatory OT and 6 day work weeks for more than 20 years. They are understaffed and overworked. Duffy is not helping the situation, but he doesn’t own all the blame either.
