I try to dislike the guy but as far as I can remember he has been in places like Uganda, Ukraine, Hurricane Areas, rather than at his nice place in the states. He was also Spicoli.

He also almost got a Mexican actress killed after introducing him to El Chapo.

XuX24 Mar 26, 2026 +1
She was already close enough to introduce someone to him so I doubt Kate was squeeky clean. Many claim him going there led to his capture.

“You d***!”

Special-Garlic1203 Mar 26, 2026 +1
And he loves to make sure he tells the press each time lol. I mean I'd rather a narcissist who is desperate to appear political than lounging about LA, but he reeks of narcissism.

CaughtALiteSneez Mar 26, 2026 +1
Because he is one… Remember when he gave Zelenskyy his other Oscar at the start of the war? As if that was going to save his people.

Hungry-Atmosphere22 Mar 26, 2026 +7
He’s a wifebeater

RestaurantFamous2399 Mar 26, 2026 +4
So when Walter Mitty found him on a mountain photographing Snow Leopards, that wasn't scripted?

SafeKaracter Mar 26, 2026 +1
Why you try to dislike?
1
pjslut Mar 26, 2026 +100
Why all the hate? Did anybody else go to Ukraine?

Redditors can't understand the idea of someone spending time to help others, so they assume that the person is just doing it for themselves

SportTheFoole Mar 26, 2026 +46
No, I think it’s more that Sean Penn has quite a long history of being up his own ass.
46
BromaEmpire Mar 26, 2026 +6
Or maybe people have a long history of being arrogant assholes behind the keyboard
6
Prior_Fisherman7665 Mar 26, 2026 +3
Or it could be both...
3
BromaEmpire Mar 26, 2026 +1
Could be.. but I know one person is in Ukraine right now and the other is sitting on their ass casting stones

regeya Mar 26, 2026
Good job deciding to defend the guy with a history of abuse I guess

He has a history of (and criminal record) assaulting people, including his first wife Madonna.
5
BromaEmpire Mar 26, 2026 +1
Didn't Madonna flat out deny those rumors?
1
CourtneyHat3 Mar 26, 2026 +4
Because the chaos machine wants us to hate compassion for others
4
treelovingaytheist Mar 26, 2026 +2
It just seems a little convenient and virtue signaling, timing-wise.

Special-Garlic1203 Mar 26, 2026 +1
South Park made fun of him for this over 20 years ago. It's been a long running joke what a masturbatory performative jerk he is..

Sean Penn gives off major douchebag energy, but he does do a lot of humanitarian work that I have to respect

Once a wifebeater always a wifebeater

Valid point

So we are just going with the whole there is no such thing as rehabilitation? I'm not defending violence against anyone. I'm genuinely asking, do you believe that people are not capable of changing for the better? Or are we all just stuck being the worst versions of ourselves forever? Our sins forever imprinted on us. Seems so nihilistic. If so, what is the point of therapy? What is the point of prisons even if punishment is not in am effort to reform. And one more time...not defending violence people, just asking "why once a wife beater always a wife beater?"
1
Destroyer_2_2 Mar 26, 2026 +1
Rehabilitation means taking full and unconditional responsibility for your actions, and recognizing that some people will always judge you based on those actions.
1
dharmavoid Mar 26, 2026 +1
That seems like a bit more of fair take. I understand victims and those effected directly feeling this. There are somethings even therapy can make it hard to forgive much less forget. Its just a question that at times bugs me, in our quest as a society (not as an individual)to condemn various crimes (such as different forms of violences) and non crimes but moral issues (racism/homophobia/etc) we might do more harm by just considering people lost causes that can't be taught than trying to get them help with the root problem (be it anger issues/substance abuse/poverty induced aniexty etc etc. ) It feels good to get upvotes with simple slogans but does it do anything to protect anyone in the future?

Destroyer_2_2 Mar 26, 2026 +1
I think to receive redemption you first have to want it. And you can’t do that without full contrition. I don’t think many people are able to offer that, but surely some are.
1
dharmavoid Mar 26, 2026 +1
I think you and me are in agreement. I think for any growth, honest self reflection and listening to others is key Growth and redemption after you hurt another would take massive amounts of amends and contrition in addition to self reflection, meditation that is required for lesser traumatic . Its a lot of work, but I would rather believe in a world that has the hope of growth for all that are willing to work for it. Its a grim future otherwise
1
Destroyer_2_2 Mar 26, 2026 +1
I very much agree!

The major faults in his personal relationships aside, I really commend him for the humanitarian work he's done. Also he's a phenomenal actor.

There is something so fascinating to me, about men like Sean Penn and Michael Sheen, who are so capable of charity, and generosity and kindness to people who they have never met or known personally, yet so cruel and malicious to their own loved ones. It can't just be a PR thing. Nobody has that kind of energy to be an automataton of good-will gathering for years and decades on end. It can't just be a narcissistic thing, because they do it ad nauseum even when the novelty wears off. I truly do not get it.

jsonaut16 Mar 26, 2026 +1
I’m a little like that, have no idea why. It’s not great, and I try, but it is what it is. Cheers
1
An_Absolute-Zero Mar 26, 2026 +3
I know he has his faults, but goddamn it I love Sean Penn.
3
YLCZ Mar 26, 2026 +2
If you are shitting on Penn for wife beating, fair enough. Just make sure you have the same energy for Netanyahu, Trump, Biden, who all helped kill thousands of civilian women, children, as well as journalists.
2
put_your_drinks_down Mar 26, 2026 +1
Hot take - our society giving a pass to domestic abusers like Sean Penn enables the rise to power of violent sociopaths like Trump. Accepting that it’s ok for talented/charismatic men to be violent in one sphere of life (entertainment) makes people more accepting of it in other spheres (politics). And also in a very direct way, zero tolerance for violence against women would have ended Trump’s political career before it even began.

This is a very good stunt. No notes.

He’s done more to bring awareness to the conflict in Ukraine than you have. Or am I wrong about that?

Virtue signal much Spicoli?

No. You don’t understand what virtue signaling is.
