He will definitely cherish that one more than the actual Oscar.

Off topic but Al Pacino also has a fan made Oscar that he was given to by a fan if I remember correctly from his book. He also loves it more than the original one.

Makes me like Pacino even more!

He  didn’t get nominated for Scarface - and he was in SF doing American Buffalo at the time.  Soon after that, a group of fans came up to him after a matinee performance, and gave him a fake Oscar, but much bigger…which he still has. That’s in Sonny Boy, but when he tells the story in interviews, he says something like he carries it around, and people are all “look at him, he carries his Oscar around” 🤣 I don’t know if he loved it more than the real one, but it’s incredibly meaningful to him as it came “from the people”

I read that as A.I. Pacino… gulp

Misleading headline. Makes it sound like they were insulting him instead of thanking him.

Mr_Greystone Mar 18, 2026 +40
Yeah. It's definitely meant to convey more.

QBRisNotPasserRating Mar 18, 2026 +26
The wording is fine. People just don’t know what “mock” means in this context.

Throwawaychicksbeach Mar 18, 2026 -10
Which would imply that there could be better wording to convey a more understandable message, no? I agree that it seems agentic.

Ruthrfurd-the-stoned Mar 18, 2026 +13
Im gonna be honest if mock-x isn’t understood then thats just depressing. It’s a pretty common term
13
Throwawaychicksbeach Mar 18, 2026 -10
Just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s not easily conflated… even you can agree with that
-10
Bosworth02 Mar 18, 2026 +7
The context of the headline makes it pretty clear.

Ruthrfurd-the-stoned Mar 18, 2026 +5
Can I understand it yes- is it incredibly disheartening also yes

Shitty wording, probably deliberate for clicks.

>Sean Penn opted out of attending the 2026 Oscars and was in the Ukraine Last time I checked, the THE was dropped in 1991…
30
QueezyF Mar 19, 2026 +8
Last time I heard it called the Ukraine was a Seinfeld episode. And even when Kramer calls it the Ukraine, the actual Ukrainian guy calls it just Ukraine.

Krondon57 Mar 18, 2026 +16
Sean always doin sidequests!
16
Moving-thefuck-on Mar 18, 2026 +11
I would argue this is the main quest and each of his wildly different personas he takes on for a year or so for our amusement are the side quests.

“Alternative award” would have been a better way to put it. Stupid title

When I get "mock duck" at a Thai restaurant, they arent making fun of me or a duck. Somehow they have a better grasp of English than the commenters in hete.

I consider the alternative even cooler than the original one

He’s such an a****** but you have to give it to him that he seems to have strong principles and integrity when it comes to some things
11

Is he truly an a****** or is he just really weird and unfriendly?

Sean Penn and his support for Ukraine are amazing.

I picture Sean Penn walking around Ukraine looking like he did at the end of the movie

Holy c*** that’s amazing. That inscription is a punch in the feels.

So one who entertains people goes and talks with a President gets a trophy? Did he donate anything or setup any resources? I’m always confused as to why people think actors, outside their respective jobs, are held in such high regard unless they have done something to help humanity.
1
Little-Ani Mar 18, 2026 +2
Did people forget this man took a boat with a film crew during Hurricane Katrina to film himself "rescuing" people only to get stranded and have precious resources relocated to get himself rescued? nothing this man does is earnest or well intention.

Sean Penn is still a POS. Stirred the pot in Mexico for an interview with El Chapo that lead to El Chapo’s capture and all hell broke loose and SP went back home and glorified the interview he had while the innocent people in Mexico had to deal with the ripple effect.
-5
Electro-Grunge Mar 18, 2026 +14
you are mad at Sean Pen because they arrested a Drug Lord who is an escaped fugitive?
14
CL9Accord Mar 18, 2026 -2
Lol new to the world, are ya? His interview literally cause so much harm as El Chapo was arrested within a few days of the interview being released. It cause havoc for the citizens of Mexico. He was literally at fault and actually put Kate De Castillo in one of the scariest situations ever. As a Mexican myself, the story is told in our culture and we know exactly who is at fault for the capture of El Chapo and the killing of innocent civilians in Mexico. Gun and drug trade in Mexico will never ever stop. The US is at fault for it. Go to Mexico and it is extremely rare that you’ll see anything like Skid Row there. You might see unhouse drunks. But extremely rarely will you see drug addicts. Who benefits from the drug and gun trade? The US does, right?
-2
J0hn_Br0wn24 Mar 18, 2026 +7
So you're suggesting he's bad because a warlord got arrested and somehow it's his fault El Chapo was dumb enough to do an interview because his ego allowed him to be vulnerable... And somehow the capture of a drug lord and it's repercussions are the fault of someone trying to interview this gangster that's been glorified through charitable murder and money flaunting? Get the f*** outta here

CL9Accord Mar 18, 2026 +1
There was no guaranteed interview—it was requested on the spot while they were already at the compound. Sean Penn had a phone on him that was being tracked. This isn’t about glorifying El Chapo. In some areas, what people call “peace” exists because cartels are allowed to operate. They provide for communities in ways local governments often fail to, which speaks to deeper systemic corruption. It’s not fair to place all the blame on citizens or on Mexico alone. There also has to be acknowledgment of the U.S. role—whether it’s the flow of military-grade weapons into Mexico or the demand and systems that enable drug trafficking. For many people living in poverty, involvement in these networks can feel like a matter of survival rather than choice. At the same time, it raises questions: if agencies like the FBI, DEA, and DHS are working so aggressively, how do drugs continue to flow so freely into the U.S.? El Chapo’s capture wasn’t solely because of Sean Penn—Mexico had already been tracking him—but that narrative oversimplifies a much larger, more complex situation.

Ok-Temporary-8243 Mar 18, 2026 +1
I think its much more that it was a pretty shitty interview that really shouldn't have happened. If I remember, El Chapo actually states at one point that he's only killed or ordered killings in self defense, which is a hilariously laughable lie and Sean doesn't bother to challenge it at all. And he seemed to have the intent more of showing that the war on drugs is a failure more than bringing up anything about how bloodthirsty and cruel the Sinaola cartel is. Just a complete ethical and moral fumble on Sean's part

Thank you for being educated and knowing the history on this. I’ve argued this a few times on reddit and the responses are literally the same. A bunch of white people being mad at me, a basic Mexican; that knows the history and story of Sean Penn. He is genuinely hated by many in Mexico for how he treated the situation and the harm he put Kate De Castillo in.
2
Ok-Temporary-8243 Mar 18, 2026 +2
Yeah, I wouldn't put too much stock into it though. Most of reddit just goes off of vibes based truths. And since Penn hates Trump, they'll defend him even if they don't know any better. It's the same group of people that also find themselves saying that Khomeini was a good guy because Trump hates him

He just won an Oscar, SAG and BAFTA without campaigning. He’s clearly widely respected in his field by his peers and the industry and he barely gives a shit.

Please show that to the russian-speaking Ukrainians in Crimea and Donbass, mass killed by their own Ukrainian Army in this war. Or they are no longer Ukrainians ? They sure have lots to say to this hypocritical clown. Impatiently waiting on Ukrainian Keyboard Warriors responses, there are many sitting on welfare in refugee countries and "winning Russia" remotely. The further from front lines, the more Ukrainian Patriots.
