From what Kumail said, he was booked for the show just before Jason was announced.
He described it as meeting Tim Key at a 2024 Christmas party, who put him in touch with Alex Horne. So by that time Jason had already filmed all of his series, but it just wasnt announced until after Kumails negotiations were done.
Taskmaster films well ahead of when its airing, with several series in production at the same time. Series 21 is about to air. Series 22 is about to film their studio sections. Series 23 is filming their tasks. And the discussion and negotiations for Series 24 are probably already happening.

There's definitely a small subset of American comedians that would do well on TM, since much of TM's humor comes from self-deprecating and some semblance of humility.

The vast, vast majority of US comedians are way too self-centred to succeed on a show like Taskmaster.

Agreed - this is why the occasional attempt at UK style panel shows made by Americans just don't seem to work. Americans just don't have the same mastery of banter, taking the piss and slagging themselves off.

As long as it doesn't go down the Top Gear route where they're interviewing A-list celebrities -- keep it limited to slightly-higher-profile people with a background in stand-up.
32
raysofdaviesMar 25, 2026
+33
It won’t happen. It’s Alex’s baby and he’s only interested in having people on who will be good and aren’t arseholes, which is funny when you consider how much of the show is built on Greg and contestants being mean to him.
33
wrosecransMar 25, 2026
+15
Also, it's a huge time sink. A generic celebrity will go do a Top Gear interview as part of a press tour because they can do more than one of those kinds of things in a day. Or spend an hour eating wings, or whatever. Heck, they can do a lunch interview show and a driving interview show on the same day and still have time left for something else later that day. But they won't spend weeks over the course of several months to get on Taskmaster. And because it's so long between when you shoot the first task and when it is released that it would be really hard for a PR team to try to schedule their celebrity to be promoting a specific new project that comes out when the show is released.
I think there's a lot of natural filters that will keep it from just turning into a press tour whistle stop show for big celebs. The incentives aren't mutually aligned for it.

Because comedians are obsessed with Taskmaster and it being free on YouTube means that anyone in the states can see how amazing it is and beg their agents for a meeting with Alex. I’ve never seen this before for British tv. Like Doctor Who has had people on who were so excited, but Neil Patrick Harris and Jonathan Groff are the only two American stars I can think of excitedly coming in.

I mean Jack Black or Conan would buy in. There are A listers that would be fun as hell. Shane Gillis, Nate Bargetzi, Ali Wong and then like the second tier of comedians Stavvy, Dan Soder etc those guys would be unreal.
The real ticket to ride though is like Ben Schwartz, Lisa Gilroy, Brennan Lee Mulligan and some of the drop out people. But never two of them at the same time.

I disagree. Conan is a conversationalist and is prolifically going off on bits and "yes, and" pyramids. Greg Davies works because he's "serious," imposing, can keep things moving and focused, and isn't predisposed to consuming the spotlight as Conan does.
Conan is one of my favorite personalities. But he would not be the right fit for Taskmaster.

It’s very important to the Taskmaster dynamic though that the five contestants bounce *well* off of each other. People like BLeeM or Ben Schwartz would be incredible, but I think Jason’s run on Taskmaster wouldn’t have been as memorable as it was without his fellows’ performances to bounce off of in the studio and his teammate in group tasks.
Brennan is *highly* competitive, so it’s absolutely vital he gets a group dynamic that can support-slash-antagonize that fact.

> I think Jason’s run on Taskmaster wouldn’t have been as memorable as it was without his fellows’ performances to bounce off of in the studio and his teammate in group tasks.
Stevie Martin was incredible in the group tasks. Sometimes you'll see the personality of the other group member get washed out by the chaos gremlin but she was able to keep up with him and help him build the comedy to some of the best spots.
"What's going to happen when we graduate?" was just an all-timer that happened because she was able to keep the ball rolling on his bit of moving around to discuss the guesses in the group task.

It's not going to be a problem. Both Kumail and Jason have said (I actually think Alex said it about Jason) that they ended up losing money flying back and forth for the show since the appearance fee doesn't cover having to frequently fly in to do the live taping part. That alone makes it limited to American comics who actually want to do the show.
2
AdamsoskiMar 25, 2026

Jason Mantzoukas and Kumail Nanjiani are bigger in the US (and would potentially usually be more expensive), but in terms of Taskmaster's core audience in the UK I don't think they are noticeably big names any more so than people they've had on the show from the very beginning. Armando Iannucci and Joanna Page are definitely a bigger draw than Kumail Nanjini in the UK for instance.

Desiree (and Katherine) are UK based and part of that comedy scene. Jason was the first US based comedian that went on the show. Kumail is similar.

I get what you're saying, but Desiree only moved to the UK in 2014 and was a writer and actress in the US before then. Her career took off after the move, true... but she's still American. Even the [Taskmaster wiki describes her as American](https://taskmaster.fandom.com/wiki/Desiree_Burch).
I do understand she's much more well known in the UK, however. And I see your point about her being UK based.

NZ season 1 is rough but the host and assistant have grown on me. The contestants are also not trying their best in season 1.
A good season needs most of the contestants to really be trying their best, maybe one being wacky or lazy for the comedy.
The best ones have someone trying their best while being absolutely bonkers. I think that's what made Jason such a good contestant.

I think that I’m in the small minority that thinks Taskmaster has been a bit too.. “overproduced” in the last couple of series/seasons. I still love the show and am watching every season, but something has felt a little off. Like maybe the cast is too in on the joke, or they’re hamming it up a little too much for laughs.
6
The_SumMar 25, 2026

I think it's just the nature of the show with it now being over 20 seasons. I know I can't be the only one who frequently skips the group tasks where they have to be creative and perform something like a skit. I watch for the tasks that require clever thinking because that's where this show shines (IMO) and it feels like we're getting more skits and less "real" tasks.
I'm also starting to suspect they're fluffing certain contestants in that they're helping them out way, way more than they should and it really takes the fun out of the series when it seems like someone is being given an over-abundance of leeway.
Taskmaster has the ability to let contestants who are genuinely funny and resourceful shine while still including contestants who are not really engaged with the show.
8
Simple-Motor-2889Mar 25, 2026

I agree with you. I think the funny contestant outfits are one example of this.
but I'm really impressed with how the show has handled it and it's still one of my favorite shows. The fact that were on Series 21 and barely complaining about it speaks volumes I think. It's incredible rare for a show to get this far, be this popular, and still maintain it's original format and vibe so well.
