The Washington monument is 1.2 miles away and a 25 min walk from the White House according to Google

Yeah, this happened nowhere near the guy. Happen to be in the area and got caught up in it. There were thousands of people closer than Trump (ETA, lol, most of them were kids on school trips to DC)

The Secret Service Uniformed Division is basically a police force in dc. They're at all the major monuments, respond to normal police calls, and have a wide arrest authority
83
pause_and_consider 6 days ago +70
Oh they’re all over the place. Even in sane administrations, anywhere near government/monument stuff in DC is crawling with some species of federal law enforcement/protection service. A lot of them aren’t uniformed and are trying to blend in. Source: used to date a Supreme Court cop

There were a ton of police from a bunch of different units. A bunch of the Secret Service agents seemed to come out of the White House area.

Exactly - he's literally supporting the evil side on *every possible issue* in perpetuity and it's so egregious now that at least half of the country would stop their day to celebrate if something bad happened. That's a deliberate choice. And now they're amping up the propaganda to try and make it seem like (their constant disingenuous push to create violent extremism is actually) the population spiraling out of control and a reason why Trump should erase the Constitution and cancel all elections to have this modern fascist Republican admin stay in power permanently/illegally against the wishes of the majority of the country.

25
kristospherein 6 days ago +30
They just want the monument within the perimeter. Its a favorite of this adminstration because of its phallic nature.
30
Winged_Metal 6 days ago +24
It's because of the underground rail system that is exclusive to government officials. It has multiple stops including the white house and other unamed buildings as basically both a way for them to get around away from public eyes and as a means of escaping should the worst come to pass. It's even said that one of the lines reaches all the way to the Pentagon.

TL;DR: On May 4, 2026 (\~3:30 PM ET) near the Washington Monument, Secret Service spotted a suspicious armed man. On an attempt to make contact, the person tried flee, then drew a gun, and allegedly fired first at officers. They returned fire, wounding him (hospitalized). A 15-year-old bystander was also hit (officials say from suspect's shots). No agents were injured. The gun was recovered. White House was briefly locked down.
339
Myrtle_Nut 6 days ago +545
“From suspects shots.” Sad that I doubt whether this statement is true or not.

justbunnies 6 days ago +117
I mean they shot each other and lied. They are not above shooting kids and lying.
117
BlooregardQKazoo 6 days ago +65
I'm assuming the armed person actually fired zero shots until evidence is made available stating otherwise. I think the PA shooter was the only one to actually fire shots but each time it is reported that these "would-be assassins" fired shots.
65
Foxy02016YT 6 days ago +21
Don’t forget that the second “assassin” was just found with a gun at the golf course and was in no way near able to shoot him. It might have been an assassination attempt, but it barely made it to the attempt part.
21
BlooregardQKazoo 6 days ago +14
Yup. That one always stunk. Any remotely competent security would have just secured Trump while calling in help to walk up and detain the guy. So of course Trump's detail just started firing shots at the guy, allowing him to temporarily get away. It's almost like the Secret Service under Trump is just a bunch of trigger-happy incompetents or something.
14
lopix 6 days ago +3
Remember, they shot at that guy at least 4 times, didn't hit him once. More stormtrooper level aim from the SS.
3
BlooregardQKazoo 6 days ago +5
My understanding was that the guy was comically far away, well outside the range of handguns. Looking it up, he was 1200 (!) feet away. The aim wasn't the problem. The decision-making was.
5
thegoatmenace 6 days ago +20

4
BitterFuture 6 days ago +42
It should be noted that the Washington Monument is most of a mile away from the White House. So the White House was briefly locked down for a violent incident that happened nowhere near the White House, probably just because it involved the Secret Service.

It's possible that the Secret Service also shot a kid, although this article glossed that over. This shows more careless bafoonary, if not incompetence by the Secret Service, if this is true. The New York Times reported this: >The Secret Service shot and wounded an armed man on Monday afternoon just south of the White House in a burst of gunfire that also grazed a young bystander in an area packed with pedestrians, officials said. >The condition of the armed man, who was not identified, is not known. A firearm was recovered at the scene. A 15-year-old boy who was shot was being treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, officials said. Matt Quinn, the deputy director of the Secret Service, told reporters that investigators think the boy was shot by the gunman, but he later appeared to hedge his earlier statement when asked again. >"We’ll let the doctors figure that out,” Mr. Quinn said during a news conference near the scene.
242

I just don't care. There's no reason to care. Trump and his media sycophants are the boy who cried wolf. They've lied, faked things, and told so many half-truths that nothing they claim holds even the slightest bit of weight. Vance could be sworn in and I'd still be wondering if it was all so Trump could flee the country because they've got absolutely zero integrity and there are zero reasons to trust them on anything. Even if they told the full truth, I'd be seeking out unconnected sources to see if it's even slightly true. They have burned every bridge and it is insane to me that anybody voted for Trump more than once.

FlameHaze 6 days ago +30
That's because regardless whatever anyone believes, we had a functioning body of government then. We no longer have that in basically all sections of government including the ones you wouldn't really expect like FDA, USPS, etc. Republicans can destroy, they cannot build. See exhibit Ballroom for details. ~~More~~ government shutdowns than any other President in the history of the USA. Republicans cannot govern so they choose not too and blame anything but their own incompetence on all the issues they cause. The ball changes courts, Americans forget and lo and behold, we repeat the exact same horseshit the next election. https://americanoversight.org/investigation/the-trump-administrations-dismantling-of-federal-agencies-and-threats-to-important-social-services/ EDIT: My mistake, not more days. The first headline I saw said Trump continued talking about his dementia while the White House was on lockdown due to a shooter. I thought “how on Earth did they just let him keep droning on with a gunman at the White House?” Now I find out the gunman was a mile away from the White House and you can't get anywhere near the White House these days as it’s completely isolated from Americans.  Trump and everyone around him knows shit’s gonna go down around November. This is all laying the foundation to lock the federal government away from its citizens.

I used to think there was a limit..until Sandy Hook. We thoughts and prayered our way through that then Uvalde happened. When the slaughter of children only prompts tweets from adults, we're fucked.

It's scary to consider that the Secret Service returned fire considering how "well" they performed during the WH correspondents dinner.

Honestly, for all we know they heard a balloon pop and opened fire.

Honestly this hear.  I don't believe a damn word out of the WH.  Show us video or I assume they are lying.

Was it another secret service officer?

Lord_Val 6 days ago +8
Bro, why are these idiots going to whitehouse? The dude spends half his time on his golf course.

Dang, this is why we need to build that ballroom! Oh…wait…

Oh look, another pantload of ridiculous bullshit, must be Monday.

A ballroom -- for a guy with no balls. It's another construction grift. And as we all know, there's no place safer in an emergency than the nearest ballroom. These multiple attempts. staged or not, have little to do with whether there's a ballroom or not. How they relate to each other is beyond me.

This president seems to draw hate like a bee to honey. Funny thing is most of the shooters were republicans.

AffectionateDrop7779 6 days ago +5
The same secret service that keep letting people with guns enter the perimeter where the Epstein president is? They stopped something? Yeah right

Braindead_Crow 6 days ago +5
Ah yes the bought media pushing the victim complex of the most hostile president in modern history. trump is like a meth head who stumbled into office, declared himself king and everyone just went with it.

I guess we're just counting all of DC as "near the White House" now.

BezisThings 6 days ago +4
Gunfire near the white house. Just 10000 miles away

HQnorth 6 days ago +4
1.3miles away but sure...it was "near" Dear Leader.

The secret service and not the military guys or regular police who keep objects safe? How did the secret service even get to the Washington Monument without a person they protect being there?
5
Seamus32 6 days ago +7
So then I guess the ballroom wouldn’t help?

Just lie lie lie and keep lying while you're lying until everyone gives up.

This is just another plea for the ballroom.

justbunnies 6 days ago +9
Yup. This was probably a run of the mill armed guy with mental illnesses. Considering the distance from the pedo in chief, he could have been targeting anything.

Yep, but we all know how it's going to be spun.

This will be used as an excuse to expand the perimeter at The White House.
11
Anony-mommy 6 days ago +11
He will use this as an excuse to rename the Washington monument the Trump monument, cover it in gold leaf and make it taller (so a trump souvenir shop can be in the base).

Made sure to feature an "exchange" this time and not just SS agents shooting each other willy-nilly. I wonder what the angle is, still the ballroom?

Id_ping_that 6 days ago +3
Me and the pizza driver exchanged pizza

redthehaze 6 days ago +3
The White House has snipers on top of it 24/7. Anywhere near it should not be a concern.

Sounds like a much less expensive show than Iran for them. Release all of the files the videos of Trump with teens, etc… disgusting and disgraceful. A corrupt traitor 20 times over (or more, we won’t know until he is out of office just how corrupt he has been)… is running the US (into the ground)!

Like they did in the Hilton?

Someone needs attention again. I havent talked to my neighbors in a year and it was good to see them again but not directly talk to them. I may also have raccoons in the basement. Anyway I wish I could ignore the president more than anything, he can go flush himself.

noplaywellwithothers 6 days ago +3
He REALLY wants that ballroom/panic room. He needs somewhere to hide when his last constitutional term is up.

countryroadsguywv 6 days ago +3
This makes absolutely no sense

Blofish1 6 days ago +3
We're gonna need a bigger ballroom.
